In high energy heavy-ion collisions, the two colliding nuclei pass through each other leaving behind an almost baryon free central rapidity region. Most of the baryons are carried away by the nuclear remnants and are located in the so-called fragmentation regions. In previous papers \cite{Li:2016wzh,Li:2018ini}, it has been argued that very high baryon densities, more than ten times larger than the normal nuclear density, can be achieved in these fragmentation regions. In this paper, we assume the high baryon density matter is thermalized at the same time as the baryon-free quark-gluon plasma in the central rapidity region. We perform a 1+1D (temporal + longitudinal) hydrodynamic simulation covering both the fragmentation regions and the central rapidity region with the baryon diffusion equation included. Baryons are found to diffuse from the fragmentation regions to the central rapidity region driven by fugacity gradients. The baryon chemical potential at freezeout monotonically increases from the central rapidity region to the fragmentation regions, suggesting a rapidity scan in high energy heavy-ion collisions might be helpful in searching for the critical point of the QCD phase diagram.
A longitudinal transition operator that satisfies the gauge invariance requirement is introduced in constituent quark model. The corresponding longitudinal transitions between the nucleon and baryon resonances are calculated. We show that the study of the longitudinal coupling plays an important role in understanding the structure of baryons.
Using a multiphase transport model, we study the production of multistrange baryons from the hadronic matter formed in relativistic heavy ion collisions. The mechanism we introduce is the strangeness-exchange reactions between antikaons and hyperons. We find that these reactions contribute significantly to the production of multistrange baryons in heavy ion collisions at SPS energies, which has been found to be appreciably enhanced. We have also made predictions for multistrange baryon production in heavy ion collisions at RHIC and found a similar enhancement.
Kaon production cross sections in nucleon-nucleon, nucleon-delta and delta-delta interactions are studied in a boson exchange model. For the latter two interactions, the exchanged pion can be on-mass shell, only contributions due to a virtual pion are included via the Peierls method by taking into account the finite delta width. With these cross sections and also those for pion-baryon interactions, subthreshold kaon production from heavy ion collisions is studied in the relativistic transport model.
In very high energy collisions nuclei are practically transparent to each other but produce very hot, nearly baryon-free, matter in the so-called central rapidity region. The energy in the central rapidity region comes from the kinetic energy of the colliding nuclei. We calculate the energy and rapidity loss of the nuclei using the color glass condensate model. This model also predicts the excitation energy of the nuclear fragments. Using a space-time picture of the collision we calculate the baryon and energy densities of the receding baryonic fireballs. For central collisions of gold nuclei …
We calculate the net baryon rapidity distribution in Au+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) in the framework of the Parton Cascade Model (PCM). Parton rescattering and fragmentation leads to a substantial increase in the net baryon density at mid-rapidity over the density produced by initial primary parton-parton scatterings. The PCM is able to describe the measured net baryon density at RHIC.
The baryon phase-space density at mid-rapidity from central heavy-ion collisions is estimated from proton spectra with interferometry and deuteron coalescence measurements. It is found that the mid-rapidity phase-space density of baryons is significantly lower at the SPS than the AGS, while those of total particles (pion + baryon) are comparable. Thermal and chemical equilibrium model calculations tend to over-estimate the phase-space densities at both energies.
The azimuthal angle dependence of quark spin polarization in the longitudinal beam direction of non-central relativistic heavy ion collisions is studied in the chiral kinetic approach. Contrary to the prediction from models based on the assumption of thermal equilibrium of spin degrees of freedom that the quark spin polarization always points along the direction of local vorticity field, we find the two can have opposite directions due to the effect from the transversal component of vorticity field, which can lead to a redistribution of axial charges in the produced matter. Our finding is cons…
We study the pseudorapidity dependent hydrodynamic response in heavy-ion collisions. A differential hydrodynamic relation is obtained for elliptic flow. Using event-by-event simulations of 3+1D MUSIC, with initial conditions generated via a multi-phase transport (AMPT) model, the differential response relation is verified. Based on the response relation, we find that the two-point correlation of elliptic flow in pseudorapidity are separated into the fluid response and the two-point correlation of initial eccentricity.
The stopping behaviour of baryons in massive heavy ion collisions (at SPS, RHIC and LHC) is investigated within different microscopic models. At SPS-energies the predictions range from full stopping to virtually total transparency. Experimental data are indicating strong stopping. The initial baryo-chemical potentials and temperatures at collider energies and their impact on the formation probability of strange baryon clusters and strangelets are discussed.
Heavy ion collisions at extremely high energy, such as the top energy at RHIC, exhibit the property of transparency where there is a clear separation between the almost net-baryon-free central rapidity region and the net-baryon-rich fragmentation region. We calculate the net-baryon rapidity loss and the nuclear excitation energy using the energy-momentum tensor obtained from the McLerran-Venugopalan model. Nuclear compression during the collision is further estimated using a simple space-time picture. The results show that extremely high baryon densities, about twenty times larger than the nor…
The baryon distribution is studied by using a parton cascade model which is based on pQCD incorporating hard partonic scattering and dynamical hadronization scheme. In order to study baryon distribution, baryonic cluster formation is newly implemented as well as hadronic higher resonance states from parton/beam cluster decay. The net baryon number and charged hadron distributions are calculated with different $K$-factors in which parameters are fixed by elementary $p\bar p$ data at $E_{c.m.}=200$ GeV. It is found that baryon stopping behavior at SPS and RHIC energies are not consequence of hard…
We construct a model for baryon diffusion which has the desired properties of analyticity and causality. The model also has the desired property that the noise correlation function is not a Dirac delta function in space and time. The model depends on three time constants in addition to the diffusion constant. This description can be incorporated into 2nd order viscous hydrodynamical models of heavy ion collisions.
Analytic expressions are given for the baryonic, electric and strangeness chemical potentials which explicitly show the importance of various terms. Simple scaling relations connecting these chemical potentials are found. Applications to particle ratios and to fluctuations and related thermal properties such as the isothermal compressibility kappaT are illustrated. A possible divergence of kappaT is discussed.
A 3-fluid hydrodynamic model is introduced for simulating heavy-ion collisions at incident energies between few and about 200 AGeV. In addition to the two baryon-rich fluids of 2-fluid models, the new model incorporates a third, baryon-free (i.e. with zero net baryonic charge) fluid which is created in the mid-rapidity region. Its evolution is delayed due to a formation time $τ$, during which the baryon-free fluid neither thermalizes nor interacts with the baryon-rich fluids. After formation it thermalizes and starts to interact with the baryon-rich fluids. It is found that for $τ$=0 the inter…
The role of baryon-antibaryon annihilation during the hadronic stage of a relativistic heavy ion collision is explored by simulating the chemical evolution of a hadron gas. Beginning with a chemically equilibrated gas at an initial temperature of 170 MeV, the chemical composition of a representative hydrodynamic cell is followed throughout the hadronic stage. The cell's volume changes with time according to a parameterization that mimics a three-dimensional hydrodynamic expansion. The chemical evolution includes both annihilation and regeneration of baryons, consistent with detailed balance. D…
A direct method to reconstruct the transverse structure of the baryon source formed in a relativistic heavy ion collision is presented. The procedure makes use of experimentally measured proton and deuteron spectra and assumes that deuterons are formed via two-nucleon coalescence. The transverse density shape and flow profile are reconstructed for Pb+Pb collisions at the CERN-SPS. The ambiguity with respect to the source temperature is demonstrated and possible ways to resolve it are discussed.
Nuclei are nearly transparent to each other when they collide at high energy, but the collisions do produce high energy density matter in the central rapidity region where most experimental measurements are made. What happens to the receding nuclear fireballs? We calculate the energy loss of the nuclei using the color glass condensate model. We then use a simple space-time picture of the collision to calculate the baryon and energy densities of the receding fireballs. For central collisions of large nuclei at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the CERN Large Hadron Collider we find ba…
We present a method that may allow an estimate of the value of the speed of sound as well as its logarithmic derivative with respect to the baryon number density in matter created in heavy-ion collisions. To this end, we utilize well-known observables: cumulants of the baryon number distribution. In analyses aimed at uncovering the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter, cumulants gather considerable attention as their qualitative behaviour along the explored range of collision energies is expected to aid in detecting the QCD critical point. We show that the cumulants may also reveal the…
We study the multiplicity fluctuation and correlation of identified mesons and baryons formed at the hadronization by the quark combination mechanism in the context of ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Based on the statistical method of free quark combination, we derive the two-hadron multiplicity correlations such as meson-meson and meson-baryon correlations, and take the effects of quark number fluctuation at hadronization into account by a Taylor expansion method. After including the decay contributions, we calculate the dynamical fluctuation observable $ν_{dyn}$ for $\text{K}π$, $pπ…
We systematically study the hyperon global polarization's sensitivity to the collision systems' initial longitudinal flow velocity in hydrodynamic simulations. By explicitly imposing local energy-momentum conservation when mapping the initial collision geometry to macroscopic hydrodynamic fields, we study the evolution of systems' orbital angular momentum (OAM) and fluid vorticity. We find that a simultaneous description of the $Λ$ hyperons' global polarization and the slope of pion's directed flow can strongly constrain the size of longitudinal flow at the beginning of hydrodynamic evolution.…
We extend the study of hadron yield correlation in combination models in a recent publication to baryon-anti-baryon flavor correlations in heavy ion collisions. We show that the universal behaviors of the anti-baryon to baryon yield ratios as functions of that of $K^-$ to $K^+$ are naturally explained. We study also the "mixed ratios" and propose other measurements that might be sensitive to the hadronization mechanism.
Longitudinal and transverse transition form factors for most of the four-star nucleon resonances have been obtained from high-quality cross section data and polarization observables measured at MAMI, ELSA, BATES, GRAAL and CEBAF. As an application, we further show how the transition form factors can be used to obtain empirical transverse charge densities. Contour plots of the thus derived densities are shown and compared for the Roper and S11 nucleon resonances.
We show that the baryon stopping observed in heavy ion collisions both at CERN-SPS and at RHIC can be derived from the one observed in proton-proton collisions. No increase in the size of the baryon junction component is required between small size $(pp)$ and large size (AA) systems.
At intermediate transverse momentum (2 < p_T < 6 GeV/c), baryon production in Au+Au collisions is enhanced compared to p+p collisions. Since charm baryon decays produce electrons less frequently than charm meson decays, the non-photonic electron spectrum is sensitive to the Lambda_c/D ratio. In this report we study the dependence of the non-photonic electron spectrum on the baryon-to-meson ratio for charm hadrons. As an example, we take the Lambda_c/D ratio to have the same form as the Lambda/K^0_S ratio. In this case, even if the total charm quark yield in Au+Au collisions scales with the num…
Within the framework of the improved isospin dependent quantum molecular dynamics (ImIQMD) model, the dynamics of strangeness (K$^{0,+}$, $Λ$ and $Σ^{-,0,+}$) production in heavy-ion collisions near threshold energies is investigated systematically, in which the strange particles are considered to be mainly produced by the inelastic collisions of baryon-baryon and pion-baryon. The collisions in the region of supra-saturation densities of the dense baryonic matter formed in heavy-ion collisions dominate the yields of strangeness production. The total multiplicities as functions of incident ener…
We study the evolution of the longitudinal expansion of an ideal fluid with finite electrical conductivity, which is subject to the EM fields. In the framework of resistive relativistic-magneto-hydrodynamic, we find an exact analytical solution for the EM fields and for the acceleration of the fluid.
We study the longitudinal decorrelations of elliptic, triangular and quadrangular flows in heavy-ion collisions at the LHC and RHIC energies. The event-by-event CLVisc (3+1)-dimensional hydrodynamics model, combined with the fully fluctuating AMPT initial conditions, is utilized to simulate the space-time evolution of the strongly-coupled quark-gluon plasma. Detailed analysis is performed for the longitudinal decorrelations of flow vectors, flow magnitudes and flow orientations. We find strong correlations between final-state longitudinal decorrelations of anisotropic flows and initial-state l…
We show that the phenomenology of isospin effects on heavy ion reactions at intermediate energies (few AGeV range) is extremely rich and can allow a ``direct'' study of the covariant structure of the isovector interaction in the hadron medium. We work within a relativistic transport frame, beyond a cascade picture, consistently derived from effective Lagrangians, where isospin effects are accounted for in the mean field and collision terms. Rather sensitive observables are proposed from collective flows (``differential'' flows) and from pion/kaon production ($π^-/π^+$, $K^0/K^+$ yields). For t…
We propose the enhancement of $Λ_c$ yield in heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC as a novel signal for the existence of diquarks in the strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma produced in these collisions as well as in the $Λ_c$. Assuming that stable bound diquarks can exist in the quark-gluon plasma, we argue that the yield of $Λ_c$ would be increased by two-body collisions between $ud$ diquarks and $c$ quarks, in addition to normal three-body collisions among $u$, $d$ and $c$ quarks. A quantitative study of this effect based on the coalescence model shows that including the contribution of diqu…
We discuss a relation between the QCD thermodynamics obtained from a statistical analysis of particle production in heavy ion collisions at SPS and RHIC energies and recent LGT results at finite chemical potential. We show that basic thermodynamic properties obtained from the phenomenological statistical operator of a hadron resonance gas that describes particle yields in heavy ion collisions are consistent with recent LGT results. We argue that for $T\leq T_c$ the equation of state derived from Monte--Carlo simulations of two quark--flavor QCD at finite chemical potential can be well describe…
The energy and baryon densities in heavy ion collisions are estimated by analytically solving a 1+1 dimensional hydrodynamical model with source terms. Particularly, a competition between the energy and baryon sources and the expansion of the system is discussed in detail.
The longitudinal asymmetry arises in relativistic heavy ion collisions due to fluctuation in the number of participating nucleons. This asymmetry causes a shift in the center of mass rapidity of the participant zone. The rapidity shift as well as the longitudinal asymmetry have been found to be significant at the top LHC energy for collisions of identical nuclei. We study the longitudinal asymmetry and its effect on charged particle rapidity distribution and anisotropic flow parameters at relatively lower RHIC energies using a model calculation. The rapidity shift is found to be more pronounce…
We numerically simulate collisions of charged shockwaves in Einstein-Maxwell theory in anti-de Sitter space as a toy model of heavy ion collisions with non-zero baryon charge. The stress tensor and the baryon current become well described by charged hydrodynamics at roughly the same time. The effect of the charge density on generic observables is typically no larger than 15\%. %The rapidity profile of the charge is wider than the profile of the local energy density. We find significant stopping of the baryon charge and compare our results with those in heavy ion collision experiments.
We propose several new observables/correlators, based on correlations between two or more subevents separated in pseudorapidity $η$, to study the longitudinal flow fluctuations. We show that these observables are sensitive to the event-by-event fluctuations, as a function of $η$, of the initial condition as well as the non-linear mode-mixing effects. Experimental measurement of these observables shall provide important new constraints on the boost-variant event-by-event initial conditions required by all 3+1-dimensional viscous hydrodynamics models.
We study the polarization of particles in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at very high energy along the beam direction within a relativistic hydrodynamic framework. We show that this component of the polarization decreases much slower with center-of-mass energy compared to the transverse component, even in the ideal longitudinal boost-invariant scenario with non-fluctuating initial state, and that it can be measured by taking advantage of its quadrupole structure in the transverse momentum plane. In the ideal longitudinal boost-invariant scenario, the polarization is proportional to the grad…
We show that fluctuations of the fireball shape in the longitudinal direction generate nontrivial rapidity correlations that depend not only on the rapidity difference, y_{1} - y_{2}, but also on the rapidity sum, y_{1} + y_{2}. This is explicitly demonstrated in a simple wounded nucleon model, and the general case is also discussed. We show how to extract different components of the fluctuating fireball shape from the measured two-particle rapidity correlation function. The experimental possibility of studying the longitudinal initial conditions in heavy-ion and proton-proton collisions is em…
The higher order moments of the net-baryon distributions in relativistic heavy ion collisions are useful probes for the QCD critical point and fluctuations. We study the net-proton distributions and their moments in a simple model which considers the baryon stopping and pair production effects in the processes. It is shown that a single emission source model can explain the experimental data well. Centrality and energy dependence of the distributions and higher moments is discussed.
We consider phenomenological consequences arising from simple analytic solutions for holographic heavy-ion collisions. For these solutions, early-time longitudinal flow is initially negative (inward), sizable direct, elliptic, and quadrangular flow is generated, and the average vorticity of the system is tunable by a single parameter. Despite large vorticity and angular momentum, we show that the system does not complete a single rotation.
In ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions the baryon-meson ratio is not fully understood in the intermediate-to-high transverse momentum region. Although quark coalescence methods combined with jet fragmentation yield results close to the experimental data, some tendencies are not reproduced and require further investigation. We propose a new channel, namely extra quark-antiquark and diquark-antidiquark pair production from coherent gluon field created in the early stage of heavy ion collisions. This process is described quantitatively by the time-dependent Schwinger-mechanism. The extra diqua…
Fluctuations in the initial transverse energy-density distribution lead to anisotropic flows as observed in central high-energy heavy-ion collisions. Studies of longitudinal fluctuations of the anisotropic flows can shed further light on the initial conditions and dynamical evolution of the hot quark-gluon matter in these collisions. Correlations between anisotropic flows with varying pseudorapidity gaps in Pb+Pb collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider are investigated using both an event-by-event (3+1)-D ideal hydrodynamical model with fluctuating initial conditions and the a multiphase …
It is argued that in heavy ion collisions at LHC there could be a sizeable production of baryons containing two or three heavy quarks from statistical coalescence. This production mechanism is peculiar of Quark Gluon Plasma and the predicted rates, in heavy ion collisions at LHC energy, exceed those from a purely hadronic scenario, particularly for Xi_bc and Omega_ccc. Thus, besides the interest in the discovery of these new states, enhanced ratios of these baryons over singly heavy flavoured hadrons, like B or D, in heavy ion collisions with respect to pp at the same energy, would be a clear …
The features of net baryon productions and collective flow in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at energies reached at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) and BNL Alternating Gradient Synchrotron (AGS) with the model of Non-Uniform Flow Model(NUFM) are systematically studied in this paper. Especially we predict the feature of net baryon productions and collective flow at LHC $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=5500 GeV basing on the detailed study of that at RHIC $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=62.4 and 200GeV. The dependencies of the features of b…
We investigate the baryonic contributions to the dilepton yield in high energy heavy ion collisions within the context of a transport model. The relative contribution of the baryonic and mesonic sources are examined. It is observed that most dominant among the baryonic channels is the decay of N*(1520) and mostly confined in the region below the rho peak. In a transport theory implementation we find the baryonic contribution to the lepton pair yield to be small.
We present for the first time quantitative results for the coupled dynamics of second order fluctuations in the three conserved charges of QCD based on stochastic diffusion equations for a Bjorken-type expanding hadronic medium.
It is found that the baryon phase-space density obtained from the ratio of deuteron to proton yields is nearly constant over centrality in Au+Au collisions at the AGS. The finding offers an explanation for the puzzling centrality independence of the ratio of charged kaon total yields. The correlation between the charged kaon ratio and the average baryon phase-space density is studied for central heavy-ion collisions of various systems over a wide range of beam energy. It is found that the charged kaon ratio and the average baryon phase-space density both increase with decreasing beam energy, a…
We present results of hydrodynamic modelling of Au-Au collisions from $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 7.7 to 200 GeV. Our simulations have three novel components. Firstly, we use a Linear EXtrapolation of Ultrarelativistic nucleon-nucleon Scattering to nucleus-nucleus collisions (LEXUS) inspired Monte-Carlo initial state model. Secondly, we use a crossover equation of state at finite baryon densities without a critical point. Finally, we use departure functions derived from the quasiparticle theory of transport coefficients for hadronic matter at non-zero baryon densities.
We argue that the chemical freeze-out in heavy ion collisions at high baryon density is not associated to a phase transition or rapid crossover. We employ the linear nucleon-meson model with parameters fixed by the zero-temperature properties of nuclear matter close to the liquid-gas quantum phase transition. For the parameter region of interest this yields a reliable picture of the thermodynamic and chiral properties at non-zero temperature. The chemical freeze-out observed in low-energy experiments occurs when baryon densities fall below a critical value of about 15 percent of nuclear densit…
Baryon number cumulants are invaluable tools to diagnose the primordial stage of heavy ion collisions if they can be measured. In experiments, however, proton number cumulants have been measured as substitutes. In fact, proton number fluctuations are further modified in the hadron phase and different from those of baryon number. We show that the isospin distribution of nucleons at kinetic freezeout is binomial and factorized. This leads to formulas that express the baryon number cumulants sorely in terms of proron number fluctuations, which are experimentally observable.
We study the effect of strong longitudinal color fields (SCF) in p+p reactions up to Large Hadron Collider energies in the framework of the HIJING/BBbar v2.0 model that combines (collinear factorized) pQCD multiple minijet production with soft longitudinal string excitation and hadronization. The default vacuum string tension, kappa0 = 1 GeV/fm, is replaced by an effective power law energy dependent string tension, that increases monotonically with center-of-mass energy. The exponent 0.06 is found sufficient to reproduce well the energy dependence of multiparticle observables in RHIC, Tevatron…
This work presents a three-dimensional dynamical initialization model for relativistic heavy-ion collisions, implementing local energy-momentum conservation and baryon charge fluctuations at string junctions. Constraining parameters using experimental data from p+p collisions at various collision energies, the model provides a very good description of the charged hadron and net proton rapidity distributions in Au+Au collisions from 7.7 to 200 GeV and Pb+Pb collisions at 8.77 and 17.3 GeV. We demonstrate the importance of fluctuations of baryon densities to string junctions for describing net-p…
Experimental data at RHIC and SPS energies suggest a systematic correlation between yield ratio $\bar{p}/p$ and $K^{-}/K^{+}$, which reveal some universality of hadron production in relativistic heavy ion collisions. We propose an explanation based on the quark combination mechanism in which the production asymmetry between baryons and antibaryons is focused on especially. We start from the basic ideas of quark combination to carry out a general analysis of the properties of the global production of baryons and mesons and obtain the yields of baryons, antibaryons and mesons as functions of the…
