We analyze the instability of the non-rotating fermion vacuum in Kerr spacetimes. We describe how the co-rotating Fermi sea is formed as a result of a spontaneous vacuum decay. Most significantly, and drawing upon intuition gained from analogous electrodynamic processes in supercritical fields, we show that this decay process is encoded entirely in a subset of quasi-normal fermion modes.
We study false vacuum decay in a black hole (BH) spacetime with an angular momentum. Considering the false vacuum region described by a Kerr-de Sitter geometry, under the thin wall approximation, we can obtain the stationary configuration of the vacuum bubble seen from the outside false vacuum region without specifying the geometry inside the domain wall. Then, assuming the true vacuum region is described by a Kerr geometry, we can fix the mass and the spin parameter for the Kerr geometry by imposing the 1st junction conditions and conservation of the angular momentum. Although the assumption …
In the framework of the Lorentz symmetry breaking (LSB), we investigate the quasinormal modes (QNMs) and the greybody factors (GFs) of the Kerr-like black hole spacetime obtained from the bumblebee gravity model. In particular, we analyze the scalar and fermionic perturbations of the black hole within the framework of both semi-analytic WKB method and the time domain approach. The impacts of the LSB on the bosonic/fermionic QNMs and GFs of the Kerr-like black hole are investigated in detail. The obtained results are graphically depicted and discussed.
We study {\it analytically} the asymptotic quasinormal spectrum of fermionic fields in the Kerr spacetime. We find an analytic expression for these black-hole resonances in terms of the black-hole physical parameters: its Bekenstein-Hawking temperature $T_{BH}$, and its horizon's angular velocity $Ω$, which is valid in the asymptotic limit $1 \ll ω_I \ll ω_R$. It is shown that according to Bohr's correspondence principle, the emission of a Rarita-Schwinger quantum ($s=3/2$) corresponds to a fundamental black-hole area change $ΔA=4\hbar \ln 2$, while the emission of a Weyl neutrino field ($s=1/…
We compute the vacuum energy for Kerr black holes with anti-de Sitter (AdS) asymptotics in dimensions $5\leq D\leq 9$ with all rotation parameters. The calculations are carried out employing an alternative regularization scheme for asymptotically AdS gravity, which considers supplementing the bulk action with counterterms which are a given polynomial in the extrinsic and intrinsic curvatures of the boundary (also known as Kounterterms). The Kerr-Schild form of the rotating solutions enables us to identify the vacuum energy as coming from the part of the metric that corresponds to global AdS sp…
In view of a result recently published in the context of deformation theory of linear Hamiltonian systems, we reconsider the eigenvalue problem associated to the angular equation arising after the separation of the Dirac equation in the Kerr metric and we show how efficiently a quasi-linear first order PDE for the angular eigenvalues can be derived. We also prove that it is not possible to obtain an ordinary differential equation for the eigenvalues where the role of the independent variable is played by the particle energy or the black hole mass. Finally, we construct new perturbative expansi…
The complete solution of the vacuum Kerr-Schild equations in general relativity is presented, including the space-times with a curved background metric. The corresponding result for a flat background has been obtained by Kerr.
We study the near horizon limit of a four dimensional extreme rotating black hole. The limiting metric is a completely nonsingular vacuum solution, with an enhanced symmetry group SL(2,R) x U(1). We show that many of the properties of this solution are similar to the AdS_2 x S^2 geometry arising in the near horizon limit of extreme charged black holes. In particular, the boundary at infinity is a timelike surface. This suggests the possibility of a dual quantum mechanical description. A five dimensional generalization is also discussed.
The complete solution of Einstein's gravitational equations with a vacuum-vacuum Kerr-Schild pencil of metrics $g_{ab}+V l_al_b$ is obtained. Our result generalizes the solution of the Kerr-Schild problem with a flat metric $g_{ab}$ (represented by the Kerr theorem) to the case when $g_{ab}$ is the metric of a curved space-time.
In this paper we analyse the vacuum polarization effects associated with a massless fermionic field in a higher-dimensional global monopole spacetime in the "braneworld" scenario. In this context we admit that the our Universe, the bulk, is represented by a flat $(n-1)-$dimensional brane having a global monopole in a extra transverse three dimensional submanifold. We explicitly calculate the renormalized vacuum average of the energy-momentum tensor, $<T_A^B(x)>_{Ren.}$, admitting the global monopole as being a point-like object. We observe that this quantity depends crucially on the value of $…
The Kerr vacuum has two independent invariants derivable from the Riemann tensor without differentiation. Both of these invariants must be examined in order to avoid an erroneous conclusion that the ring singularity of this spacetime is "directional".
We study the fermionic condensate (FC) and the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the energy-momentum tensor for a massive spinor field in the de Sitter (dS) spacetime including an ideal cosmic string. In addition, spatial dimension along the string is compactified to a circle of length $L$. The fermionic field is assumed to obey quasi-periodic condition along the $z$-axis. There are also magnetic fluxes running along the cosmic string and enclosed by the compact dimension. Both, the FC and the VEV of the energy-momentum tensor, are decomposed into two parts: one induced by the cosmic string in…
In this paper we investigate vacuum polarization effects associated with charged massive quantum fermionic fields in a six-dimensional cosmic string space-times considering the presence of a magnetic flux running along its core. We have shown that for specific values of the parameters which codify the presence of the cosmic string, and the fractional part of the ratio of the magnetic flux by the quantum one, a closed expression for the respective Green function is obtained. Adopting this result, we explicitly calculate the renormalized vacuum expectation value of the energy-momentum tensors, $…
We prove that a regular stationary black-hole solution of the Einstein vacuum equations which is "close" to some Kerr solution is, in fact, isometric to that Kerr solution.
The norms associated with the gradients of the two non-differential invariants of the Kerr vacuum are examined. Whereas both locally single out the horizons, their global behavior is more interesting. Both reflect the background angular momentum as the volume of space allowing a timelike gradient decreases with increasing angular momentum becoming zero in the degenerate and naked cases. These results extend directly to the Kerr-Newman geometry.
We present a stationary axially symmetric two parameter vacuum solution which could be considered as ``dual'' to the Kerr solution. It is obtained by removing the mass parameter from the function of the radial coordinate and introducing a dimensionless parameter in the function of the angle coordinate in the metric functions. It turns out that it is in fact the massless limit of the Kerr - NUT solution.
Quasinormal modes of scalar, electromagnetic, and gravitational fields in the extreme Schwarzschild-de Sitter background are known to be expressed in analytic form as eigenvalues of the Pöschl-Teller wavelike equation. We show that perturbations of fermionic fields (given by Dirac and Rarita-Schwinger equations) do not lead to the Pöschl-Teller effective potential. Nevertheless, using the Frobenius method we find quasinormal modes analytically in this case as well. We write down the analytical formula for quasinormal frequencies of the near-extreme Schwarzschild-de Sitter black holes, which is…
The Kerr-Schild pencil of metrics $\tilde g_{ab}=g_{ab}+V l_al_b$, with $g_{ab}$ and $\tilde g_{ab}$ satisfying the vacuum Einstein equations, is investigated in the case when the null vector $l$ has vanishing twist. This class of Kerr-Schild metrics contains two solutions: the Kasner metric and a metric wich can be obtained from the Kasner metric by a complex coordinate transformation. Both are limiting cases of the Kóta-Perjés metrics. The base space-time is a pp-wave.
We investigate the fermionic condensate (FC) and the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the energy-momentum tensor for a charged massive fermionic field in the geometry of a cosmic string compactified along its axis. In addition, we assume the presence of two types of magnetic fluxes: a flux running along the cosmic string and another enclosed by the compact dimension. These fluxes give rise to Aharanov-Bohm-like effects on the VEVs. The VEVs are decomposed into two parts corresponding to the geometry of a straight cosmic string without compactification plus a topological part induced by the co…
Phase transitions for rotating asymptotically anti-de Sitter black holes in four dimensions are described in the $P-T$ plane, in terms of the Hawking temperature and the pressure provided by the cosmological constant. The difference between constant angular momentum and constant angular velocity is highlighted, the former has a second order phase transition while the latter does not. If the angular momentum is fixed there a line of first order phase transitions terminating at a critical point with a second order phase transition and vanishing latent heat, while if the angular velocity is fixed…
We investigate the combined effects of a magnetic flux-carrying cosmic string and a brane on the fermionic condensate (FC) and on the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the energy-momentum tensor for a massive charged fermionic field in background of 5-dimensional anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime. The brane is parallel to the AdS boundary and it divides the space into two regions with distinct properties of the fermionic vacuum. For two types of boundary conditions on the field operator and for the fields realizing two inequivalent representations of the Clifford algebra, the brane-induced contri…
In this paper, we analyze the fermionic condensate (FC) and the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the energy-momentum tensor associated with an isospin-$1/2$ charged massive fermionic field induced by the presence of a $SU(2)$ vortex, taking into account the effect of the conical geometry produced by this object. We consider the vortex as an idealized topological defect, i.e., very thin, straight and carrying a magnetic flux running along its core. Besides the direct coupling of the fermionic field with the iso-vector gauge field, we also admit the coupling with the scalar sector of the non-Ab…
As is well-known, Kerr-Schild metrics linearize the Einstein tensor. We shall see here that they also simplify the Gauss-Bonnet tensor, which turns out to be only quadratic in the arbitrary Kerr-Schild function f when the seed metric is maximally symmetric. This property allows us to give a simple analytical expression for its trace, when the seed metric is a five dimensional maximally symmetric spacetime in spheroidal coordinates with arbitrary parameters a and b. We also write in a (fairly) simple form the full Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet tensor (with a cosmological term) when the seed metric is f…
Stable gravitating lumps with a false vacuum core surrounded by the true vacuum in a scalar field potential exist in the presence of fermions at the core. These objects may exist in the universe at various scales.
We investigate some of the quantum gravity effects on a vacuum created pair of $(D{\bar D})_3$-brane by a non-linear $U(1)$ gauge theory on a $D_4$-brane. In particular we obtain a four dimensional quantum Kerr(Newman) black hole in an effective torsion curvature formalism sourced by a two form dynamics in the world-volume of a $D_4$-brane on $S^1$. Interestingly the event horizon is found to be independent of a non-linear electric charge and the $4D$ quantum black hole is shown to describe a degenerate vacua in string theory. We show that the quantum Kerr brane universe possesses its origin i…
We show that the pathology which afflicts the Hartle-Hawking vacuum on the Kerr black hole space-time can be regarded as due to rigid rotation of the state with the horizon in the sense that when the region outside the speed-of-light surface is removed by introducing a mirror, there is a state with the defining features of the Hartle-Hawking vacuum. In addition, we show that when the field is in this state, the expectation value of the energy-momentum stress tensor measured by an observer close to the horizon and rigidly rotating with it corresponds to that of a thermal distribution at the Haw…
We prove that the only four dimensional, stationary, rotating, asymptotically flat (analytic) vacuum black hole with a single degenerate horizon is given by the extremal Kerr solution. We also prove a similar uniqueness theorem for the extremal Kerr-Newman solution. This closes a longstanding gap in the black hole uniqueness theorems.
We calculate the vacuum averages of the energy-momentum tensor associated with a massless left-handed spinor fields due to magnetic fluxes on idealized cosmic string spacetime. In this analysis three distinct configurations of magnetic fields are considered: {\it{i)}} a homogeneous field inside the tube, {\it{ii)}} a magnetic field proportional to $1/r$ and {\it{iii)}} a cylindrical shell with $δ$-function. In these three cases the axis of the infinitely long tubes of radius $R$ coincides with the cosmic string. In order to proceed with these calculations we explicitly obtain the Euclidean Fey…
We analyze the field equations of Lovelock gravity for the Kerr-Schild metric ansatz, $g_{ab}=\bar g_{ab} +λk_ak_b$, with background metric $\bar g_{ab}$, background null vector $k^a$ and free parameter $λ$. Focusing initially on the Gauss-Bonnet case, we find a simple extension of the Einstein gravity results only in theories having a unique constant curvature vacuum. The field equations then reduce to a single equation at order $λ^2$. More general Gauss-Bonnet theories having two distinct vacua yield a pair of equations, at orders $λ$ and $λ^2$ that are not obviously compatible. Our results …
On the basis of the Kerr spinning particle, we show that the mass renormalization is perfectly performed by gravity for an arbitrary distribution of source matter. A smooth regularization of the Kerr-Newman solution is considered, leading to a source in the form of a rotating bag filled by a false vacuum. It is shown that gravity controls the phase transition to an AdS or dS false vacuum state inside the bag, providing the mass balance.
The vacuum expectation values of the energy--momentum tensor and the fermionic condensate are analyzed for a massive spinor field obeying the MIT bag boundary condition on a cylindrical shell in the cosmic string spacetime. Both regions inside and outside the shell are considered. By applying to the corresponding mode-sums a variant of the generalized Abel--Plana formula, we explicitly extract the parts in the expectation values corresponding to the cosmic string geometry without boundaries. In this way the renormalization procedure is reduced to that for the boundary-free cosmic string spacet…
We will show that the Nariai metric, i.e. the static spherically symmetric vacuum spacetime with a cosmological constant, admits a conformally Kerr-Schild spacetime representation. We find the vacuum solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations for the Nariai metric using the Horsky-Mitskievich generating conjecture.
We investigate topological effects of a cosmic string and compactification of a spatial dimension on the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the energy-momentum tensor for a fermionic field in (4+1)-dimensional locally AdS spacetime. The contribution induced by the compactification is explicitly extracted by using the Abel-Plana summation formula. The mean energy-momentum tensor is diagonal and the vacuum stresses along the direction perpendicular to the AdS boundary and along the cosmic string are equal to the energy density. All the components are even periodic functions of the magnetic fluxes…
As the microscopic structure of the deep relativistic quantum vacuum is unknown, a phenomenological approach ($q$-theory) has been proposed to describe the vacuum degrees of freedom and the dynamics of the vacuum energy after the Big Bang. The original $q$-theory was based on a four-form field strength from a three-form gauge potential. However, this realization of $q$-theory, just as others suggested so far, is rather artificial and does not take into account the fermionic nature of the vacuum. We now propose a more physical realization of the $q$-variable. In this approach, we assume that th…
We investigate gravitating lumps with a false vacuum core surrounded by the true vacuum in a scalar field potential. Such configurations become possible in the Einstein gravity in the presence of fermions at the core. Gravitational interactions as well as Yukawa interactions are essential for such lumps to exist. The mass and size of gravitating lumps sensitively depend on the scale characterizing the scalar field potential and the density of fermions. These objects can exist in the universe at various scales.
In this work we show how the criterion of asymptotic Hamiltonian diagonalization originated in hybrid quantum cosmology serves to pick out a unique vacuum for the Dirac field in de Sitter, in the context of quantum field theory in curved spacetimes. This criterion is based on the dynamical definition of annihilation and creationlike variables for the fermionic field, which obey the linearized dynamics of a Hamiltonian that has been diagonalized in a way that is adapted to its local spatial structure. This leads to fermionic variables that possess a precise asymptotic expansion in the ultraviol…
The superradiant instability modes of ultralight massive vector bosons are studied for weakly charged rotating black holes in Einstein--Maxwell gravity (the Kerr--Newman solution) and low-energy heterotic string theory (the Kerr--Sen black hole). We show that in both these cases, the corresponding massive vector (Proca) equations can be fully separated, exploiting the hidden symmetry present in these spacetimes. The resultant ordinary differential equations are solved numerically to find the most unstable modes of the Proca field in the two backgrounds and compared to the vacuum (Kerr black ho…
An atom falling freely into a Kerr black hole in a Boulware-like vacuum is shown to emit radiation with a Planck spectrum at the Hawking temperature. For a cloud of falling atoms with random initial times, the radiation is thermal. The existence of this radiation is due to the acceleration of the vacuum field modes with respect to the falling atom. Its properties can be traced to the dominant role of conformal quantum mechanics (CQM) in the neighborhood of the event horizon. We display this effect for a scalar field, though the acceleration radiation has a universal conformal behavior that is …
We obtain a characterization of the Kerr metric among stationary, asymptotically flat, vacuum spacetimes, which extends the characterization in terms of the Simon tensor (defined only in the manifold of trajectories) to the whole spacetime. More precisely, we define a three index tensor on any spacetime with a Killing field, which vanishes identically for Kerr and which coincides in the strictly stationary region with the Simon tensor when projected down into the manifold of trajectories. We prove that a stationary asymptotically flat vacuum spacetime with vanishing spacetime Simon tensor is l…
In this paper we investigate the fermionic condensate and the renormalized vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the energy-momentum tensor for a massive fermionic field induced by a flat boundary in the cosmic string spacetime. In this analysis we assume that the field operator obeys MIT bag boundary condition on the boundary. We explicitly decompose the VEVs into the boundary-free and boundary-induced parts. General formulas are provided for both parts which are valid for any value of the parameter associated with the cosmic string. For a massless field, the boundary-free part in the fermionic c…
We investigate the vacuum expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor associated with a massive fermionic field obeying the MIT bag boundary condition on a spherical shell in the global monopole spacetime. The asymptotic behavior of the vacuum densities is investigated near the sphere center and surface, and at large distances from the sphere. In the limit of strong gravitational field corresponding to small values of the parameter describing the solid angle deficit in global monopole geometry, the sphere-induced expectation values are exponentially suppressed.
In this paper, we consider a charged massive fermionic quantum field in the idealized cosmic string spacetime and in the presence of a magnetic field confined in a cylindrical tube of finite radius. Three distinct configurations for the magnetic fields are taken into account: (i) a cylindrical shell of radius $a$, (ii) a magnetic field proportional to $1/r$ and (iii) a constant magnetic field. In these three cases, the axis of the infinitely long tube of radius $a$ coincides with the cosmic string. Our main objectives in this paper are to analyze the fermionic condensat (FC) e and the vacuum e…
We investigate the effects of a brane and magnetic-flux-carrying cosmic string on the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the current density for a charged fermionic field in the background geometry of 4+1 dimensional anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime. The brane is parallel to the AdS boundary and the cosmic string is orthogonal to the brane. Two types of boundary conditions are considered on the brane that include the MIT bag boundary condition and the boundary conditions in Z2-symmetric braneworld models. The brane divides the space into two regions with different properties of the vacuum state. …
Fermionic condensate and the vacuum expectation values of the energy-momentum tensor are investigated for twisted and untwisted massive spinor fields in higher-dimensional de Sitter spacetime with toroidally compactified spatial dimensions. The expectation values are presented in the form of the sum of corresponding quantities in the uncompactified de Sitter spacetime and the parts induced by non-trivial topology. The latter are finite and the renormalization is needed for the first parts only. Closed formulae are derived for the renormalized fermionic vacuum densities in uncompactified odd-di…
We study the effects of acceleration on fermionic Gaussian states of localized modes of a Dirac field. We consider two wave-packets in a Gaussian state and transform these to an accelerated frame of reference. In particular, we formulate the action of this transformation as a fermionic quantum channel. Having developed the general framework for fermions, we then investigate the entanglement of the vacuum, as well as the entanglement in Bell states. We find that with increasing acceleration vacuum entanglement increases, while the entanglement of Bell states decreases. Notably, our results have…
We investigate the fermionic condensate and the vacuum expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor for a massive spinor field in the geometry of a straight cosmic string on background of de Sitter spacetime. By using the Abel-Plana summation formula, we explicitly extract form the expectation values the contribution associated with purely de Sitter space, remaining the expectation values induced by the cosmic string. The latter presents information about de Sitter gravity as well. Because the investigation of the fermionic quantum fluctuations in de Sitter space have been investigated in l…
Motivated by the desire to understand the leading order nonlinear gravitational wave interactions around arbitrarily rapidly rotating Kerr black holes, we describe a numerical code designed to compute second order vacuum perturbations on such spacetimes. A general discussion of the formalism we use is presented in (arXiv:2008.11770); here we show how we numerically implement that formalism with a particular choice of coordinates and tetrad conditions, and give example results for black holes with dimensionless spin parameters $a=0.7$ and $a=0.998$. We first solve the Teukolsky equation for the…
In this paper, we introduce and explore the properties of a new gauge choice for the vacuum Einstein equation inspired by the ingoing and outgoing radiation gauges (IRG, ORG) for the linearized vacuum Einstein equation introduced by Chrzanowski in his work on metric reconstruction [DOI:10.1103/PhysRevD.11.2042] on the Kerr background. It has been shown by Price, Shankar and Whiting [arXiv:gr-qc/0611070] that the IRG/ORG are consistent gauges for the linearized vacuum Einstein equation on Petrov type II backgrounds. In [arXiv:1903.03859], the ORG was used in proving linearized stability for the…
In this paper we investigate the fermionic condensate (FC) and the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the energy-momentum tensor, associated with a massive fermionic field, induced by the presence of a cosmic string in the anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime. In order to develop this analysis we construct the complete set of normalized eigenfunctions in the corresponding spacetime. We consider a special case of boundary conditions on the AdS boundary, when the MIT bag boundary condition is imposed on the field operator at a finite distance from the boundary, which is then taken to zero. The FC and t…
The Kerr-Schild pencil of metrics $g_{ab}+\La l_al_b$ is investigated in the generic case when it maps an arbitrary vacuum space-time with metric $g_{ab}$ to a vacuum space-time. The theorem is proved that this generic case, with the field $l$ shearing, does not contain the shear-free subclass as a smooth limit. It is shown that one of the Kóta-Perjés metrics is a solution in the shearing class.
The fermionic condensate and vacuum expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor, for a massive fermionic field on the background of anti-de Sitter spacetime, in the geometry of two parallel boundaries with bag boundary conditions, are investigated. Vacuum expectation values, expressed as series involving the eigenvalues of the radial quantum number, are neatly decomposed into boundary-free, single-boundary-induced, and second-boundary-induced parts, with the help of the generalized Abel-Plana summation formula. In this way, the renormalization procedure is very conveniently reduced to the …
