Modern mobile neural networks with a reduced number of weights and parameters do a good job with image classification tasks, but even they may be too complex to be implemented in an FPGA for video processing tasks. The article proposes neural network architecture for the practical task of recognizing images from a camera, which has several advantages in terms of speed. This is achieved by reducing the number of weights, moving from a floating-point to a fixed-point arithmetic, and due to a number of hardware-level optimizations associated with storing weights in blocks, a shift register, and an adjustable number of convolutional blocks that work in parallel. The article also proposed methods for adapting the existing data set for solving a different task. As the experiments showed, the proposed neural network copes well with real-time video processing even on the cheap FPGAs.

This paper presents TuRF, an end-to-end CNN acceleration framework to efficiently deploy domain-specific applications on FPGA by transfer learning that adapts pre-trained models to specific domains, replacing standard convolution layers with efficient convolution blocks, and applying layer fusion to …
Nowadays most research in visual recognition using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) follows the "deeper model with deeper confidence" belief to gain a higher recognition accuracy. At the same time, deeper model brings heavier computation. On the other hand, for a large chunk of recognition challenges, a system can classify images correctly using simple models or so-called shallow networks. Moreover, the implementation of CNNs faces with the size, weight, and energy constraints on the embedded devices. In this paper, we implement the adaptive switching between shallow and deep networks to r…

Object detection is an essential component of many vision systems. For example, pedestrian detection is used in advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and advanced video surveillance systems (AVSS). Currently, most detectors use deep convolutional neural networks (e.g., the YOLO -- You Only Look Once -- family), which, however, due to their high computational complexity, are not able to process a very high-resolution video stream in real-time, especially within a limited energy budget. In this paper we present a hardware implementation of the well-known pedestrian detector with HOG (Histogr…

Recently, with the enormous growth of online videos, fast video retrieval research has received increasing attention. As an extension of image hashing techniques, traditional video hashing methods mainly depend on hand-crafted features and transform the real-valued features into binary hash codes. As videos provide far more diverse and complex visual information than images, extracting features from videos is much more challenging than that from images. Therefore, high-level semantic features to represent videos are needed rather than low-level hand-crafted methods. In this paper, a deep convo…
