Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are powerful models that have achieved excellent performance on difficult computer vision tasks. Although CNNs perform well whenever large labeled training samples are available, they work badly on video frame synthesis due to objects deforming and moving, scene lighting changes, and cameras moving in video sequence. In this paper, we present a novel and general end-to-end architecture, called convolutional Transformer or ConvTransformer, for video frame sequence learning and video frame synthesis. The core ingredient of ConvTransformer is the proposed attention layer, i.e., multi-head convolutional self-attention layer, that learns the sequential dependence of video sequence. ConvTransformer uses an encoder, built upon multi-head convolutional self-attention layer, to encode the sequential dependence between the input frames, and then a decoder decodes the long-term dependence between the target synthesized frames and the input frames. Experiments on video future frame extrapolation task show ConvTransformer to be superior in quality while being more parallelizable to recent approaches built upon convolutional LSTM (ConvLSTM). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that ConvTransformer architecture is proposed and applied to video frame synthesis.
Different categories of visual stimuli activate different responses in the human brain. These signals can be captured with EEG for utilization in applications such as Brain-Computer Interface (BCI). However, accurate classification of single-trial data is challenging due to low signal-to-noise ratio of EEG. This work introduces an EEG-ConvTranformer network that is based on multi-headed self-attention. Unlike other transformers, the model incorporates self-attention to capture inter-region interactions. It further extends to adjunct convolutional filters with multi-head attention as a single m…
This paper presents a significant improvement for the synthesis of texture images using convolutional neural networks (CNNs), making use of constraints on the Fourier spectrum of the results. More precisely, the texture synthesis is regarded as a constrained optimization problem, with constraints conditioning both the Fourier spectrum and statistical features learned by CNNs. In contrast with existing methods, the presented method inherits from previous CNN approaches the ability to depict local structures and fine scale details, and at the same time yields coherent large scale structures, eve…
This paper studies a combination of generative Markov random field (MRF) models and discriminatively trained deep convolutional neural networks (dCNNs) for synthesizing 2D images. The generative MRF acts on higher-levels of a dCNN feature pyramid, controling the image layout at an abstract level. We apply the method to both photographic and non-photo-realistic (artwork) synthesis tasks. The MRF regularizer prevents over-excitation artifacts and reduces implausible feature mixtures common to previous dCNN inversion approaches, permitting synthezing photographic content with increased visual pla…

We construct a closed loop joint filter learning strategy that generates informative feedback for model self-optimization. Here we demonstrate that the feature space of random shallow convolutional neural networks (CNNs) can serve as a surprisingly good model of natural textures. Patches from the same texture are consistently classified as being more similar then patches from different textures. Samples synthesized from the model capture spatial correlations on scales much larger then the receptive field size, and sometimes even rival or surpass the perceptual quality of state of the art texture models (but show less variability). The current state of the art in parametric texture synthesis relies on the multi-lay…
Cross modal image syntheses is gaining significant interests for its ability to estimate target images of a different modality from a given set of source images, like estimating MR to MR, MR to CT, CT to PET etc, without the need for an actual acquisition.Though they show potential for applications in radiation therapy planning, image super resolution, atlas construction, image segmentation etc.The synthesis results are not as accurate as the actual acquisition. In this paper,we address the problem of multi modal image synthesis by proposing a fully convolutional deep learning architecture called…
We introduce a two-stream model for dynamic texture synthesis. Our model is based on pre-trained convolutional networks (ConvNets) that target two independent tasks: (i) object recognition, and (ii) optical flow prediction. Given an input dynamic texture, statistics of filter responses from the object recognition ConvNet encapsulate the per-frame appearance of the input texture, while statistics of filter responses from the optical flow ConvNet model its dynamics. To generate a novel texture, a randomly initialized input sequence is optimized to match the feature statistics from each stream of…
Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) based image reconstruction methods have been intensely used for X-ray computed tomography (CT) reconstruction applications. Despite great success, good performance of this data-based approach critically relies on a representative big training data set and a dense convoluted deep network. The indiscriminating convolution connections over all dense layers could be prone to over-fitting, where sampling biases are wrongly integrated as features for the reconstruction. In this paper, we report a robust hierarchical synthesis reconstruction approach, where trainin…

Radiomics is a rapidly growing field that deals with modeling the textural information present in the different tissues of interest for clinical decision support. However, the process of generating radiomic images is computationally very expensive and could take substantial time per radiological image for certain higher order features, such as, gray-level co-occurrence matrix(GLCM), even with high-end GPUs. To that end, we developed RadSynth, a deep convolutional neural network(CNN) model, to efficiently generate radiomic images. RadSynth was tested on a breast cancer patient cohort of twenty-…

Therefore, we suggest to generate intermediate convolutional features and propose the first synthesis approach that is catered to such intermediate convolutional features. This allows us to generate new features from label masks and include them successfully into the training procedure in ord…

With the increasing popularity of PET-MR scanners in clinical applications, synthesis of CT images from MR has been an important research topic. Accurate PET image reconstruction requires attenuation correction, which is based on the electron density of tissues and can be obtained from CT images. While CT measures electron density information for x-ray photons, MR images convey information about the magnetic properties of tissues. Therefore, with the advent of PET-MR systems, the attenuation coefficients need to be indirectly estimated from MR images. In this paper, we propose a fully convolut…

Deformable part models (DPMs) and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are two widely used tools for visual recognition. They are typically viewed as distinct approaches: DPMs are graphical models (Markov random fields), while CNNs are "black-box" non-linear classifiers. In this paper, we show that a DPM can be formulated as a CNN, thus providing a novel synthesis of the two ideas. Our construction involves unrolling the DPM inference algorithm and mapping each step to an equivalent (and at times novel) CNN layer. From this perspective, it becomes natural to replace the standard image features…
