Superconducting thin films with high intrinsic kinetic inductance are of great importance for photon detectors, achieving strong coupling in hybrid systems, and protected qubits. We report on the performance of titanium nitride resonators, patterned on thin films (9-110 nm) grown by atomic layer deposition, with sheet inductances of up to 234 pH/square. For films thicker than 14 nm, quality factors measured in the quantum regime range from 0.4 to 1.0 million and are likely limited by dielectric two-level systems. Additionally, we show characteristic impedances up to 28 kOhm, with no significant degradation of the internal quality factor as the impedance increases. These high impedances correspond to an increased single photon coupling strength of 24 times compared to a 50 Ohm resonator, transformative for hybrid quantum systems and quantum sensing.
Lossy dielectrics are a significant source of decoherence in superconducting quantum circuits. In this report, we model and compare the dielectric loss in bulk and interfacial dielectrics in titanium nitride (TiN) and aluminum (Al) superconducting coplanar waveguide (CPW) resonators. We fabricate isotropically trenched resonators to produce a series of device geometries that accentuate a specific dielectric region's contribution to resonator quality factor. While each dielectric region contributes significantly to loss in TiN devices, the metal-air interface dominates the loss in the Al device…
We demonstrate a selectively emitting optical Fabry-Pérot resonator based on a few-nm-thin continuous metallic titanium nitride film, separated by a dielectric spacer from an optically thick titanium nitride back-reflector, which exhibits excellent stability at 1070 K against chemical degradation, thin-film instabilities and melting point depression. The structure paves the way to the design and fabrication of refractory thermal emitters using the well-established processes known from the field of multilayer and rugate optical filters. We demonstrate that a few-nanometer thick films of titaniu…
Developing colloidal plasmonic nanomaterials with high carrier density that show optical resonances and photochemical activity extending from the visible to the mid-infrared (MIR) ranges remains a challenging pursuit. Here, we report the fabrication of titanium nitride (TiN) nanobars obtained using a two step procedure based on a wet chemical route synthesis of TiO2 nanowires and their subsequent high temperature annealing in ammonia flow. Electromagnetic simulations of the resulting TiN nanobars reveal a rich set of optical resonances featuring transverse, longitudinal and mixed transverse lo…
Dielectric loss is one of the major decoherence sources of superconducting qubits. Contemporary high-coherence superconducting qubits are formed by material systems mostly consisting of superconducting films on substrate with low dielectric loss, where the loss mainly originates from the surfaces and interfaces. Among the multiple candidates for material systems, a combination of titanium nitride (TiN) film and sapphire substrate has good potential because of its chemical stability against oxidization, and high quality at interfaces. In this work, we report a TiN film deposited onto sapphire s…
We present topographic and spectroscopic scanning tunneling microscopy measurements taken on a 21 nm thick TiN film at a temperature of 4.2 K -- above the superconducting transition temperature (T_c = 3.8 K) of the sample. The film was polycrystalline with crystallite diameters of d~19 nm, consistent with other films prepared under similar conditions. The spectroscopic maps show on average a shallow V-shape around V_b = 0 V consistent with a sample near the Mott insulation transition. In selected regions on several samples we additionally observed signs of Coulomb blockade. The corresponding p…

MXenes are a family two-dimensional transition metal carbide and nitride materials, which often exhibit very good metallic conductivity and are thus of great interest for applications in, e.g., flexible electronics, electrocatalysis, and electromagnetic interference shielding. However, surprisingly little is known about the fermiology of MXenes, i.e, the shape and size of their Fermi-surfaces, and its effect on the material properties. One reason for this may be that MXene surfaces are almost always covered by a mixture of functional groups, and studying Fermi-surfaces of disordered systems is…
Chemically synthesized "cove"-type graphene nanoribbons (cGNRs) of different widths were brought into dispersion and drop-cast onto exfoliated hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) on a Si/SiO2 chip. With AFM we observed that the cGNRs form ordered domains aligned along the crystallographic axes of the hBN. Using electron beam lithography and metallization, we contacted the cGNRs with NiCr/Au, or Pd contacts and measured their I-V-characteristics. The transport through the ribbons was dominated by the Schottky behavior of the contacts between the metal and the ribbon.
Stepwise deposition of Li atoms onto hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) monolayer on Ir(111) is investigated by means of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and low-energy electron diffraction. Sequential Li deposition progressively shifts the band structure of hBN to higher binding energies due to the induction of a variable electric potential originating from electronic charge donation by alkali atoms. At small coverages, Li atoms preferably intercalate under the hBN layer, where they are highly charged and give rise to a large initial shift of the band structure. Additionally, intercalated…
We report on the deposition of gallium oxide using microwave irradiation technique on III nitride epi layers. We also report on the first demonstration of a gallium oxide device, a visible blind deep UV detector, with GaN based heterostructure as the substrate. The film deposited in the solution medium, at less than 200 C, using a metalorganic precursor, was nanocrystalline. XRD confirms that as deposited film when annealed at high temperature turns polycrystalline beta gallium oxide. SEM shows the as deposited film to be uniform, with a surface roughness of 4 to 5 nm, as revealed by AFM. Inte…
Realizing high-performance nanoelectronics requires control of materials at the nanoscale. Methods to produce high quality epitaxial graphene (EG) nanostructures on silicon carbide are known. The next step is to grow Van der Waals semiconductors on top of EG nanostructures. Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is a wide bandgap semiconductor with a honeycomb lattice structure that matches that of graphene, making it ideally suited for graphene-based nanoelectronics. Here, we describe the preparation and characterization of multilayer h-BN grown epitaxially on EG using a migration-enhanced metalorgan…
Using scanning tunneling microscopy, we show that Si deposition on Pt(111) at 300K leads to a network of one-dimensional Si chains. On the bare Pt(111) surface, the chains, embedded into the Pt surface, are orientated along the <112>-direction. They disappear within a few hours in ultrahigh vacuum due to the presence of residual gas. Exposing the chains to different gases deliberately reveals that CO is largely responsible for the disappearance of the chains. The chains can be stabilized by a monolayer of hexagonal boron nitride, which is deposited prior to the Si deposition. The resulting Si …
Numerous efforts have been devoted to improve the electronic and optical properties of III-V compound materials via reduction of their nonradiative states, aiming at highly-efficient III-V sub-micrometer devices. Despite many advances, there is still a controversial debate on which combination of chemical treatment and capping dielectric layer can best reproducibly protect the crystal surface of III-Vs, while being compatible with readily available plasma deposition methods. This work reports on a systematic experimental study on the role of sulfide ammonium chemical treatment followed by diel…
Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is unique among two-dimensional materials, with a large band gap (~6 eV) and high thermal conductivity (>400 W/m/K), second only to diamond among electrical insulators. Most electronic studies to date have relied on h-BN exfoliated from bulk crystals; however, for scalable applications the material must be synthesized by methods such as chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Here, we demonstrate single- and few-layer h-BN synthesized by CVD on single crystal platinum and on carbon nanotube (CNT) substrates, also comparing these films with h-BN deposited on the more com…
