A measure of total correlations cannot increase under deterministic local operations. We show that, for any number of systems, this condition alone does not guarantee the existence of maximally correlated states. Namely, there is no state that simultaneously maximizes all the measures satisfying it. If, in addition, the measures do not increase with probability unity under local measurements, then such states exist for two systems. They are the maximally entangled states. For a larger number of systems, it depends on their Hilbert space dimensions.
We study the generation of maximally correlated states of two qubits in the absence of quantum entanglement. We show that stationary maximally correlated states can be generated under the assistance of a collective dissipative dynamics. The absence of entanglement necessarily requires maximal entanglement to an environment. The conditions under which two qubits can be maximally correlated to a finite environment are studied. We find the existence of maximally correlated states without entanglement for $3 \otimes 3$ bipartite quantum states
We construct quantum coherence resource theories in symmetrized Fock space (QCRTF), thereby providing an information-theoretic framework that connects analyses of quantum coherence in discrete-variable (DV) and continuous variable (CV) bosonic systems. Unlike traditional quantum coherence resource theories, QCRTF can be made independent of the single-particle basis and allow to quantify coherence within and between particle number sectors. For example, QCRTF can be formulated in such a way that neither Bose-Einstein condensates nor Heisenberg-Weyl coherent states are considered as quantum many…
We formulate the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a pair of maximally incompatible two-outcome measurements in a finite dimensional General Probabilistic Theory. The conditions are on the geometry of the state space, they require existence of two pairs of parallel exposed faces with additional condition on their intersections. We introduce the notion of discrimination measurement and show that the conditions for a pair of two-outcome measurements to be maximally incompatible are equivalent to requiring that a (potential, yet non-existing) joint measurement of the maxima…
Absolutely maximally entangled, AME, states are pure multipartite states that give rise to the maximally mixed states when half or more of the parties are traced out. AME states find applications in fields like teleportation or quantum secret sharing, and the problem of finding conditions on their existence has been considered in a number of papers. We consider here AME states of minimal support, that are simpler to analyse. An equivalence with coding theory gives a sufficient condition for their existence, that the number of sites be equal to the local dimension plus one, when the local dimen…
In this paper we prove that no absolutely maximally entangled, AME, state with minimal support exists with 7 sites and 5 levels. General AME states are pure multipartite states that, when reduced to half or less of the sites, the maximum entropy mixed state is obtained. They have found applications in teleportation and quantum secret sharing, and finding conditions for their existence is a well known open problem. We consider the version of this problem for minimally supported AME states. We single out known both sufficient and necessary conditions in that case. From our negative result, we sh…
Absolutely Maximally Entangled (AME) states are maximally entangled for every bipartition of the system. They are crucial resources for various quantum information protocols. We present techniques for verifying either two AME states are equivalent concerning Stochastic Local Operations and Classical Communication (SLOCC). The conjecture that for a given multipartite quantum system all AME states are SLOCC-equivalent is falsified. We also show that the existence of AME states with minimal support of 6 or more particles results in the existence of infinitely many such non-SLOCC-equivalent states…

An experimental verification of the maximally entangled state ensures that the constructed state is close to the maximally entangled state, but it does not guarantee that the state is exactly the same as the maximally entangled state. Further, the entanglement structure is not uniquely determined in general probabilistic theories even if we impose that the local subsystems are fully equal to quantum systems. Therefore, the existence of the maximally entangled state depends on whether the standard entanglement structure is valid. To examine this issue, we introduce pseudo standard entanglement …
Quantum coherence as an important quantum resource plays a key role in quantum theory. In this paper, using entropy-based measures, we investigate the relations between quantum correlated coherence, which is the coherence between subsystems [K. C. Tan, H. Kwon, C. Y. Park, and H. Jeong, Phys. Rev. A 94, 022329 (2016)], and two main kinds of quantum correlations as defined by quantum discord as well as quantum entanglement. In particular, we show that quantum discord and quantum entanglement can be well characterized by quantum correlated coherence. Moreover, we prove that the entanglement meas…
Absolutely maximally entangled (AME) states are typically defined in homogeneous systems. However, the quantum system is more likely to be heterogeneous in a practical setup. In this work we pay attention to the construction of AME states in tripartite heterogeneous systems. We first introduce the concept of irreducible AME states as the basic elements to construct AME states with high local dimensions. Then we investigate the tripartite heterogeneous systems whose local dimensions are $l,m,n$, with $3\leq l<m<n\leq m+l-1$. We show the existence of AME states in such heterogeneous systems is r…
As an analogy of best separable approximation (BSA) in the framework of entanglement theory, here we concentrate on the notion of best incoherent approximation, with application to characterizing and quantifying quantum coherence. From both analytical and numerical perspectives, we have demonstrated that the weight-based coherence measure displays some unusual properties, in sharp contrast to other popular coherence quantifiers. First, by deriving a closed formula for qubit states, we have showed the weight-based coherence measure exhibits a rich (geometrical) structure even in this simplest c…
Heterogeneous bipartite quantum pure states, composed of two subsystems with a different number of levels, cannot have both reductions maximally mixed. In this work, we demonstrate existence of a wide range of highly entangled states of heterogeneous multipartite systems consisting of $N>2$ parties such that every reduction to one and two parties is maximally mixed. Two constructions of generating genuinely multipartite maximally entangled states of heterogeneous systems for an arbitrary number of subsystems are presented. Such states are related to quantum error correction codes over mixed al…
We study a question which has natural interpretations in both quantum mechanics and in geometry. Let $V_1,..., V_n$ be complex vector spaces of dimension $d_1,...,d_n$ and let $G= SL_{d_1} \times \dots \times SL_{d_n}$. Geometrically, we ask given $(d_1,...,d_n)$, when is the geometric invariant theory quotient $\mathbb{P}(V_1 \otimes \dots \otimes V_n)// G$ non-empty? This is equivalent to the quantum mechanical question of whether the multipart quantum system with Hilbert space $V_1\otimes \dots \otimes V_n$ has a locally maximally entangled state, i.e. a state such that the density matrix f…
A remarkable feature of chaos in many-body quantum systems is the existence of a bound on the quantum Lyapunov exponent. An important question is to understand what is special about maximally chaotic systems which saturate this bound. Here we provide further evidence for the `hydrodynamic' origin of chaos in such systems, and discuss hallmarks of maximally chaotic systems. We first provide evidence that a hydrodynamic effective field theory of chaos we previously proposed should be understood as a theory of maximally chaotic systems. We then emphasize and make explicit a signature of maximal c…
We unravel the dynamical stability of a fully polarized one-dimensional ultracold few-fermion spin-1/2 gas subjected to inhomogeneous driving of the itinerant spins. Despite the unstable character of the total spin-polarization the existence of an interaction regime is demonstrated where the spin-correlations lead to almost maximally aligned spins throughout the dynamics. The resulting ferromagnetic order emerges from the build up of superpositions of states of maximal total spin. They comprise a decaying spin-polarization and a dynamical evolution towards an almost completely unpolarized NOON…
One of the key ingredients of many LOCC protocols in quantum information is a multiparticle (locally) maximally entangled quantum state, aka a critical state, that possesses local symmetries. We show how to design critical states with arbitrarily large local unitary symmetry. We explain that such states can be realised in a quantum system of distinguishable traps with bosons or fermions occupying a finite number of modes. Then, local symmetries of the designed quantum state are equal to the unitary group of local mode operations acting diagonally on all traps. Therefore, such a group of symmet…
Quantities invariant under local unitary transformations are of natural interest in the study of entanglement. This paper deduces and studies a particularly simple quantity that is constructed from a combination of two standard permutations of the density matrix, namely realignment and partial transpose. This bipartite quantity, denoted here as $R_{12}$, vanishes on large classes of separable states including classical-quantum correlated states, while being maximum for only maximally entangled states. It is shown to be naturally related to the 3-tangle in three qubit states via their two-qubit…
