We observe that some basic but fundamental constructions in Galois theory can be used to obtain some interesting restrictions on the structure of Galois groups of maximal $p$-extensions of fields containing a primitive $p$th root of unity. This is an extension of some significant ideas of Demushkin, Labute and Serre from local fields to all fields containing a primitive $p$th root of unity. Our techniques use certain natural simple Galois extensions together with some considerations in Galois cohomology and Massey products.
Information about the absolute Galois group $G_K$ of a number field $K$ is encoded in how it acts on the étale fundamental group $π$ of a curve $X$ defined over $K$. In the case that $K=\mathbb{Q}(ζ_n)$ is the cyclotomic field and $X$ is the Fermat curve of degree $n \geq 3$, Anderson determined the action of $G_K$ on the étale homology with coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}/n \mathbb{Z}$.The étale homology is the first quotient in the lower central series of the étale fundamental group. In this paper, we determine the structure of the graded Lie algebra for $π$. As a consequence, this determines the…
In this paper, we study the Selmer groups of two congruent Galois representations over an admissible $p$-adic Lie extension. We will show that under appropriate congruence condition, if the dual Selmer group of one satisfies the $\M_H(G)$-property, so will the other. In the event that the $\M_H(G)$-property holds, and assuming certain further hypothesis on the decomposition of primes in the $p$-adic Lie extension, we compare the ranks of the $π$-free quotient of the two dual Selmer groups. We then apply our results to compare the characteristic elements attached to the Selmer groups. We also s…
We investigate the Galois cohomology of finitely generated maximal pro-$p$ quotients of absolute Galois groups. Assuming the well-known conjectural description of these groups, we show that Galois cohomology has the PBW property. Hence in particular it is a Koszul algebra. This answers positively a conjecture by Positselski in this case. We also provide an analogous unconditional result about Pythagorean fields. Moreover, we establish some results that relate the quadratic dual of Galois cohomology with $p$-Zassenhaus filtration on the group. This paper also contains a survey of Koszul propert…
We determine the Galois module structure of the parameterizing space of elementary $p$-abelian extensions of a field $K$ when $\text{Gal}(K/F)$ is any finite $p$-group, under the assumption that the maximal pro-$p$ quotient of the absolute Galois group of $F$ is a free, finitely generated pro-$p$ group, and that $F$ contains a primitive $p$th root of unity if $\text{char}(F) \neq p$.
Let K/F be a finite Galois extension of global fields with Galois group G and let M be a 1-motive over F. We discuss the kernel and cokernel of the restriction map Sha^{i}(F,M) --> Sha^{i}(K,M)^{G} for i=1 and 2, independently of any finiteness hypotheses. We show that these groups are finite and obtain, in particular, formulas for the corresponding quotient of group orders.
In previous work we described when a single geometric representation, valued in a linear algebraic group, of the Galois group of a number field lifts through a central torus quotient to a geometric representation. In this paper we prove a much sharper result for systems of l-adic representations, such as the l-adic realizations of a motive, having common "good reduction" properties. Namely, such systems admit geometric lifts with good reduction outside a common finite set of primes. The method yields new proofs of theorems of Tate (the original result on lifting projective representations over…
A moduli approach to quadratic Q-curves realizing projective mod p Galois representations
For $L/K$ a finite Galois extension of number fields, the relative Pólya group $\Po(L/K)$ coincides with the group of strongly ambiguous ideal classes in $L/K$. In this paper, using a well known exact sequence related to $\Po(L/K)$, in the works of Brumer-Rosen and Zantema, we find short proofs for some classical results in the literatur. Then we define the ``Ostrowski quotient'' $\Ost(L/K)$ as the cokernel of the capitulation map into $\Po(L/K)$, and generalize some known results for $\Po(L/\mathbb{Q})$ to $\Ost(L/K)$.
Let $N=pq$ be a product of two distinct primes. There is an isogeny $J_0(N)^{\rm new}\to J^N$ defined over $\mathbf{Q}$ between the new quotient of $J_0(N)$ and the Jacobian of the Shimura curve attached to the indefinite quaternion algebra of discriminant $N$. In the case when $p=2,3,5,7,13$, Ogg made predictions about the kernels of these isogenies. We show that Ogg's conjecture is not true in general. Afterwards, we propose a strategy for proving results toward Ogg's conjecture in certain situations. Finally, we discuss this strategy in detail for $N=5\cdot 13$.
We investigate a certain class of (geometric) finite (Galois) coverings of formal fibres of $p$-adic curves and the corresponding quotient of the (geometric) étale fundamental group. A key result in our investigation is that these (Galois) coverings can be compactified to finite (Galois) coverings of proper $p$-adic curves. We also prove that the maximal prime-to-$p$ quotient of the geometric étale fundamental group of a (geometrically connected) formal fibre of a $p$-adic curve is (pro-)prime-to-$p$ free of finite computable rank.
Suppose $\mathcal K$ is $N$-dimensional local field of characteristic $p$, $\mathcal G =\mathop{Gal}(\mathcal K_{sep}/\mathcal K)$, $\mathcal G_{<p}$ is the maximal quotient of $\mathcal G$ of period $p$ and nilpotent class $<p$ and $\mathcal K_{<p}\subset \mathcal K_{sep}$ is such that $\mathop{Gal}(\mathcal K_{<p}/\mathcal K)=\mathcal G_{<p}$. We use nilpotent Artin-Schreier theory to identify $\mathcal G_{<p}$ with the group $G(\mathcal L)$ obtained from a profinite Lie $\mathbb F_p$-algebra $\mathcal L$ via the Campbell-Hausdorff composition law. The canonical $\mathcal P$-topology on $\ma…
Let $p$ be prime, and $n,m \in \mathbb{N}$. When $K/F$ is a cyclic extension of degree $p^n$, we determine the $\mathbb{Z}/p^m\mathbb{Z}[\text{Gal}(K/F)]$-module structure of $K^\times/K^{\times p^m}$. With at most one exception, each indecomposable summand is cyclic and free over some quotient group of $\text{Gal}(K/F)$. For fixed values of $m$ and $n$, there are only finitely many possible isomorphism classes for the non-free indecomposable summand. These Galois modules act as parameterizing spaces for solutions to certain inverse Galois problems, and therefore this module computation provid…
In this article, we study a relation between certain quotients of ideal class groups and the cyclotomic Iwasawa module $X_\infty$ of the Pontrjagin dual of the fine Selmer group of an elliptic curve $E$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$. We consider the Galois extension field $K^E_n$ of $\mathbb{Q}$ generated by coordinates of all $p^n$-torsion points of $E$, and introduce a quotient $A^E_n$ of the $p$-sylow subgroup of the ideal class group of $K^E_n$ cut out by the modulo $p^n$ Galois representation $E[p^n]$. We describe the asymptotic behavior of $A^E_n$ by using the Iwasawa module $X_\infty$. In p…
Polylogarithms are those multiple polylogarithms that factor through a certain quotient of the de Rham fundamental group of the thrice punctured line known as the polylogarithmic quotient. Building on work of Dan-Cohen, Wewers, and Brown, we push the computational boundary of our explicit motivic version of Kim's method in the case of the thrice punctured line over an open subscheme of $\mathrm{Spec}\,\mathbb{Z}$. To do so, we develop a greatly refined version of the algorithm of Dan-Cohen tailored specifically to this case, and we focus attention on the polylogarithmic quotient. This allows u…
我们表明,任何三重Massey产品关于素数2包含0时,它被定义在任何领域。这推广了M. J. Hopkins和K.
A semicommutative finite group scheme is a finite group scheme which can be obtained from commutative finite group schemes by iterated performing semidirect products with commutative kernels and taking quotients by normal subgroups. In this article, for an étale tame semicommutative finite group scheme $G$, we give a lower bound on the number of connected $G$-torsors of bounded height (such as discriminant).
Upon quotienting by units, the elements of norm 1 in a number field $K$ form a countable subset of a torus of dimension $r_1 + r_2 - 1$ where $r_1$ and $r_2$ are the numbers of real and pairs of complex embeddings. When $K$ is Galois with cyclic Galois group we demonstrate that this countable set is equidistributed in a finite cover of this torus with respect to a natural partial ordering induced by Hilbert's Theorem 90.
There are 3 examples in these notes. The first one is the standard example of the cubic resolvent of a quartic. The second example is exactly from Adelmann \cite{Adelmann} and gives a defining polynomial corresponding to the unique $S_4$-quotient of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{Z}/4\mathbb{Z})$. The splitting field of the Adelmann polynomial over $\mathbb{Q}$ is a subfield of the 4-division field of an elliptic curve, that contains the 2-division field of the elliptic curve. The third example is new and needed in the study of the field theory of quaternion origami. Associated to an elliptic curve de…
Let $L$ be a Galois algebra with Galois group $G$ and let $x$ be a normal element of $L$. The moduli space $\mathcal X$ of pairs $(L,x)$ is isomorphic to an open subset of the quotient variety $\mathbb P/G$, where $\mathbb P$ is the projective space of the regular representation of $G$. We provide a formula for the height of any pair $(L,x) \in \mathcal X(\mathbb Q)$ in terms of algebraic invariants of $L$ and $x$ with respect to a natural adelic metric on the anticanonical divisor of $\mathbb P/G$.
The power classes of a field are well-known for their ability to parameterize elementary $p$-abelian Galois extensions. These classical objects have recently been reexamined through the lens of their Galois module structure. Module decompositions have been computed in several cases, providing deep new insight into absolute Galois groups. The surprising result in each case is that there are far fewer isomorphism types of indecomposables than one would expect generically, with summands predominately free over associated quotient rings. Though non-free summands are the exception both in their for…
Sect 1 introduces Nielsen classes attached to (G,C), where C is r conjugacy classes in a finite group G, and a braid action on them. These give reduced Hurwitz spaces, denoted H(G,C)^rd. The section concludes with a braid formula for the genus of these spaces when r = 4. If there is at least one prime l for which G is divisible by l, but has no Z/l quotient, then there is a canonical tower of reduced Hurwitz spaces over H(G,C)^rd, using the Universal Frattini cover, ~G, of G, and ~G_ab, its abelianized version. The towers are nonempty assuming C are l' classes satisfying a cohomological condit…
Let $F$ be the maximal totally real subfield of $\mathbf{Q}(ζ_{32})$, the cyclotomic field of $32$nd roots of unity. Let $D$ be the quaternion algebra over $F$ ramified exactly at the unique prime above $2$ and 7 of the real places of $F$. Let $\mathcal{O}$ be a maximal order in $D$, and $X_0^D(1)$ the Shimura curve attached to $\mathcal{O}$. Let $C = X_0^D(1)/\langle w_D \rangle$, where $w_D$ is the unique Atkin-Lehner involution on $X_0^D(1)$. We show that the curve $C$ has several striking features. First, it is a hyperelliptic curve of genus $16$, whose hyperelliptic involution is exceptio…
