The physical properties of metals are often given by the sum of the contributions from the electrons consisting the Fermi surface (FS), and therefore, fine structures of the electronic bands and Bloch functions are often masked by the integral over FS. As a consequence, usually, the singular structures in the electronic bands are often not reflected to the macroscopic quantities. In this work, we investigate the anomaly-related magnetoresistance in metals with type-II Weyl nodes close to the FS, and find that the anomaly-related current increases divergently, showing a singular structure. Detailed analysis on a simple model with multiple Weyl nodes shows that the contribution to the magnetoresistance is dominated by the electrons in the vicinity of the Weyl nodes; this is related to the fact that the current is given by the square of the Berry curvature, which enhances the contribution from the electrons around the Weyl nodes. The above results potentially allows an estimate of the anomaly-induced current without precise information of the entire Band structure.
Magnetotransport such as the giant magnetoresistance and Hall effect lies at the heart of fundamental physics and technologies. Recently, some experiments have clearly demonstrated linear magnetotransport (LMT) proportional to magnetic field but the underlying physical mechanism is still unclear. In this work, we show that Berry curvature effect is a new mechanism dominating the LMT. The Berry-curvature-induced LMT widely exists in 66 out of 122 magnetic point groups. For typical magnetic Weyl semimetals Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ and ferromagnetic MnBi$_2$Te$_4$, Berry curvature induces LMT conductivi…
In topological semimetals and insulators, negative longitudinal magnetoresistance and angle-dependent planar Hall effect have been reported arising from the Berry curvature. Using the Boltzmann transport theory, we present a closed-form expression for the nonequilibrium distribution function which includes both the effects of the Berry curvature and Lorentz force. Using this formulation, we obtain analytical expressions for conductivity and resistivity tensors in Weyl semimetals demonstrating a non-monotonic field dependence arising from the competition between the two effects.
Understanding the transport behavior of an electronic system under the influence of a magnetic field remains a key subject in condensed matter physics. Particularly in topological materials, their nonvanishing Berry curvature can lead to many interesting phenomena in magnetotransport owing to the coupling between the magnetic field and Berry curvature. By fully incorporating both the field-driven anisotropy and inherent anisotropy in the band dispersion, we study the semiclassical Boltzmann magnetotransport theory in topological materials with a nonvanishing Berry curvature. We show that as a …
We study the magnetoelectric and magnetothermal transport properties of noncentrosymmetric metals using semiclassical Boltzmann transport formalism by incorporating the effects of Berry curvature and orbital magnetic moment. These effects impart quadratic-B dependence to the magnetoelectric and magnetothermal conductivities, leading to intriguing phenomena such as planar Hall effect, negative magnetoresistance, planar Nernst effect and negative Seebeck effect. The transport coefficients associated with these effects show the usual oscillatory behavior with respect to the angle between the appl…
Using a microscopic theory for the magnetoconductivity at low magnetic fields we show how the Hall and longitudinal conductivity can be calculated in the low scattering rate limit. In the lowest order of the scattering rate, we recover the result of the semiclassical Boltzmann transport theory. At higher order, we get corrections containing the Berry curvature and the orbital magnetic moment. We use this formalism to study the linear longitudinal magnetoconductivity in tilted Weyl semimetals. We discuss how our result is related to the semiclassical Boltzmann approach and show the differences …
The band geometric properties of quantum materials play an elemental role in the linear and nonlinear transport of electrons. In this paper, we propose that the interplay of the Berry curvature, the orbital magnetic moment and the Lorentz force can induce a finite nonlinear resistivity in two dimensional systems in presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. The induced nonlinear magnetoresistivity scales linearly with the magnetic field and is purely quantum mechanical in origin. This novel transport signature can be used as an additional experimental probe for the geometric quantities in int…
Observation of Shubnikov-de Haas Oscillations, Non-trivial Berry Phase, Planar Hall and Anisotropic Magnetoresistance at the conducting interface of EuO-KTaO$_3$
The electronic properties of graphene have been intensively investigated over the last decade, and signatures of the remarkable features of its linear Dirac spectrum have been displayed using transport and spectroscopy experiments. In contrast, the orbital magnetism of graphene, which is one of the most fundamental signature of the characteristic Berry phase of graphene's electronic wave functions, has not yet been measured in a single flake. In particular, the striking prediction of a divergent diamagnetic response at zero doping calls for an experimental test. Using a highly sensitive Giant …
Triple-component fermions are pseudospin-1 quasiparticles hosted by certain three-band semimetals in the vicinity of their band-touching nodes [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 100}, 235201 (2019)]. The excitations comprise of a flat band and two dispersive bands. The energies of the dispersive bands are $E_{\pm}=\pm\sqrt{α^2_n k^{2n}_\perp+v^2_z k^2_z}$ with $k_\perp=\sqrt{k^2_x+k^2_y}$ and $n=1,2,3$. In this work, we obtain the exact expression of Berry curvature, approximate form of density of states and Fermi energy as a function of carrier density for any value of $n$. In particular, we study the Berry …
Topological nodal-line semimetals offer an interesting research platform to explore novel phenomena associated with its torus-shaped Fermi surface. Here, we study magnetotransport in the massive nodal-line semimetal with spin-orbit coupling and finite Berry curvature distribution which exists in many candidates. The magnetic field leads to a deformation of the Fermi torus through its coupling to the orbital magnetic moment, which turns out to be the main scenario of the magnetoresistivity (MR) induced by the Berry curvature effect. We show that a small deformation of the Fermi surface yields a…
Large intrinsic anomalous Hall effect (AHE) due to the Berry curvature in magnetic topological semimetals is attracting enormous interest due to its fundamental importance and technological relevance. Mechanisms resulting in large intrinsic AHE include diverging Berry curvature in Weyl semimetals, anticrossing nodal rings or points of non-trivial bands, and noncollinear spin structures. Here we show that a half-topological semimetal (HTS) state near a topological critical point can provide a new mechanism for driving an exceptionally large AHE. We reveal this through a systematic experimental …
When electrons are confined in two-dimensional (2D) materials, quantum mechanically enhanced transport phenomena, as exemplified by the quantum Hall effects (QHE), can be observed. Graphene, an isolated single atomic layer of graphite, is an ideal realization of such a 2D system. Here, we report an experimental investigation of magneto transport in a high mobility single layer of graphene. Adjusting the chemical potential using the electric field effect, we observe an unusual half integer QHE for both electron and hole carriers in graphene. Vanishing effective carrier masses is observed at Dir…

The phonon magnetochiral effect consists of a nonreciprocity in the velocity or attenuation of acoustic waves when they propagate parallel and antiparallel to an external magnetic field. The first experimental observation of this effect has been reported recently in a chiral magnet and ascribed to the hybridization between acoustic phonons and chiral magnons. Here, we predict a potentially measurable phonon magnetochiral effect of electronic origin in chiral Weyl semimetals. Caused by the Berry curvature and the orbital magnetic moment, this effect is enhanced for longitudinal phonons by the c…

We study electric field and temperature gradient driven magnetoconductivity of a Weyl semimetal system. To analyze the responses, we utilize the kinetic equation with semiclassical equations of motion modified by the Berry curvature and orbital magnetization of the wave-packet. Apart from known positive quadratic magnetoconductivity, we show that due to chiral anomaly, the magnetconductivity can become non-analytic function of the magnetic field, proportional to 3/2 power of the magnetic field at finite temperatures. We also show that time-reversal symmetry breaking tilt of the Dirac cones res…
Starting with general semiclassical equations of motion for electrons in the presence of electric and magnetic fields, we extend the Chambers formula to include in addition to a magnetic field, time-dependent electric fields and bands with Berry curvature. We thereby compute the conductivity tensor $σ_{αβ}(B,ω)$ in the presence of magnetic field for bands in two (2D) and three (3D) dimensions with Berry curvature. We focus then on several applications to magnetotransport for metals with Fermi surface topological transitions in 2D. In particular, we consider a rectangular lattice and a model re…
Berry phase and Berry curvature play a key role in the development of topology in physics and do contribute to the transport properties in solid state systems. In this paper, we report the finding of novel nonzero Hall effect in topological material ZrTe5 flakes when in-plane magnetic field is parallel and perpendicular to the current. Surprisingly, both symmetric and antisymmetric components with respect to magnetic field are detected in the in-plane Hall resistivity. Further theoretical analysis suggests that the magnetotransport properties originate from the anomalous velocity induced by Be…
The recent discovery of the quantum nonlinear Hall effect has revived the field of nonlinear transport. Here, we predict magnetic field-induced nonlinear Hall effect in time-reversal symmetric Weyl semimetal. We show that the interplay of the band geometric quantities, such as the Berry curvature, and the magnetic part of the Lorentz force can give rise to finite nonlinear Hall conductivity that is linear in the magnetic field. Such nonlinear Hall conductivity can manifest through nonlinear transport measurement as well as nonlinear optical phenomena like photocurrent and the second harmonic g…
