A major open question in studies of nonequilibrium quantum dynamics is the identification of the time scales involved in the relaxation process of isolated quantum systems that have many interacting particles. We demonstrate that long time scales can be analytically found by analyzing dynamical manifestations of spectral correlations. Using this approach, we show that the Thouless time, $t_{\text{Th}}$, and the relaxation time, $t_{\text{R}}$, increase exponentially with system size. We define $t_{\text{Th}}$ as the time at which the spread of the initial state in the many-body Hilbert space is complete and verify that it agrees with the inverse of the Thouless energy. $t_{\text{Th}}$ marks the point beyond which the dynamics acquire universal features, while relaxation happens later when the evolution reaches a stationary state. In chaotic systems, $t_{\text{Th}}\ll t_{\text{R}}$, while for systems approaching a many-body localized phase, $t_{\text{Th}}\rightarrow t_{\text{R}}$. Our analytical results for $t_{\text{Th}}$ and $t_{\text{R}}$ are obtained for the survival probability, which is a global quantity. We show numerically that the same time scales appear also in the evolution of the spin autocorrelation function, which is an experimental local observable. Our studies are carried out for realistic many-body quantum models. The results are compared with those for random matrices.
Despite tremendous theoretical efforts to understand subtleties of the many-body localization (MBL) transition, many questions remain open, in particular concerning its critical properties. Here we make the key observation that MBL in one dimension is accompanied by a spin freezing mechanism which causes chain breakings in the thermodynamic limit. Using analytical and numerical approaches, we show that such chain breakings directly probe the typical localization length, and that their scaling properties at the MBL transition agree with the Kosterlitz-Thouless scenario predicted by phenomenolog…
We study the ergodic side of the many-body localization transition in its standard model, the disordered Heisenberg quantum spin chain. We show that the Thouless energy, extracted from long-range spectral statistics and the power-spectrum of the full momentum distribution fluctuations, is not large enough to guarantee thermalization. We find that both estimates coincide and behave non-monotonically, exhibiting a strong peak at an intermediate value of the disorder. Furthermore, we show that non-thermalizing initial conditions occur well within the ergodic phase with larger probability than exp…
Quantum many-body edge and extended magnon excitations from the 1/3 -- plateau of the anisotropic Heisenberg model on an open AB$_2$ chain in a magnetic field $h$ are unveiled using the density matrix renormalization group and exact diagonalization. By tuning both the anisotropy and $h$ in the rich phase diagram, the edge states penetrate in the bulk, whose gap closes in a symmetry-protected topological Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. Also, we witness the squeezed chain effect, the breaking of the edge states degeneracy, and a topological change of the excitations from gapped magnons with quad…
The Anderson transition in random graphs has raised great interest, partly because of its analogy with the many-body localization (MBL) transition. Unlike the latter, many results for random graphs are now well established, in particular the existence and precise value of a critical disorder separating a localized from an ergodic delocalized phase. However, the renormalization group flow and the nature of the transition are not well understood. In turn, recent works on the MBL transition have made the remarkable prediction that the flow is of Kosterlitz-Thouless type. Here we show that the And…

An attempt is made to find different emergent quantum phases for interacting topological state of quantum matter. Our study is based on the quantum field theoretical renormalization group (RG) calculations. The behaviour of the RG flow lines gives the emergence of different quantum phases for non-interacting and interacting topological state of quantum matter. We show explicitly electron-electron interaction can turn a topologically trivial phase into a non-trivial one and also topological non-trivial phase to topological trivial phase. We show that physics of emergent is go beyond the quantum…
We examine the many-body localization (MBL) phase transition in one-dimensional quantum systems with quenched randomness and short-range interactions. Following recent works, we use a strong-randomness renormalization group (RG) approach where the phase transition is due to the so-called avalanche instability of the MBL phase. We show that the critical behavior can be determined analytically within this RG. On a rough $\textit{qualitative}$ level the RG flow near the critical fixed point is similar to the Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) flow as previously shown, but there are important differences in…
Disordered interacting spin chains that undergo a many-body localization transition are characterized by two limiting behaviors where the dynamics are chaotic and integrable. However, the transition region between them is not fully understood yet. We propose here a possible finite-size precursor of a critical point that shows a typical finite-size scaling and distinguishes between two different dynamical phases. The kurtosis excess of the diagonal fluctuations of the full one-dimensional momentum distribution from its microcanonical average is maximum at this singular point in the paradigmatic…
We propose scaling theories for Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) phase transitions on the basis of the hallmark exponential growth of their correlation length. Finite-size scaling, finite-entanglement scaling, short-time critical dynamics, and finite-time scaling, as well as some of their combinations are studied. Relaxation times of both a usual power-law and an unusual power-law with a logarithmic factor are considered. Finite-size and finite-entanglement scaling forms somehow similar to a frequently employed ansatz are presented. The Kibble-Zurek scaling of topological defect density for a linear d…
Characterizing states of matter through the lens of their ergodic properties is a fascinating new direction of research. In the quantum realm, the many-body localization (MBL) was proposed to be the paradigmatic ergodicity breaking phenomenon, which extends the concept of Anderson localization to interacting systems. At the same time, random matrix theory has established a powerful framework for characterizing the onset of quantum chaos and ergodicity (or the absence thereof) in quantum many-body systems. Here we numerically study the spectral statistics of disordered interacting spin chains, …

We study spectral form factor in periodically-kicked bosonic chains. We consider a family of models where a Hamiltonian with the terms diagonal in the Fock space basis, including random chemical potentials and pair-wise interactions, is kicked periodically by another Hamiltonian with nearest-neighbor hopping and pairing terms. We show that for intermediate-range interactions, random phase approximation can be used to rewrite the spectral form factor in terms of a bi-stochastic many-body process generated by an effective bosonic Hamiltonian. In the particle-number conserving case, i.e., when pa…
The gap of the Liouvillian spectrum gives the asymptotic decay rate of a quantum dissipative system, and therefore its inverse has been identified as the slowest relaxation time. In contrary to this common belief, we show that the relaxation time due to diffusive transports in a boundary dissipated many-body quantum system is determined not by the gap or low-lying eigenvalues of the Liouvillian but by superexponentially large expansion coefficients for Liouvillian eigenvectors with non-small eigenvalues at an initial state. This finding resolves an apparent discrepancy reported in the literatu…
Chaos is an important characterization of classical dynamical systems. How is chaos linked to the long-time dynamics of collective modes across phases and phase transitions? We address this by studying chaos across Ising and Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions in classical XXZ model. We show that spatio-temporal chaotic properties have crossovers across the transitions and distinct temperature dependence in the high and low-temperature phases which show normal and anomalous diffusions, respectively. Our results also provide new insights into the dynamics of interacting quantum systems in the semic…
Relaxation in a Completely Integrable Many-Body Quantum System: An Ab Initio Study of the Dynamics of the Highly Excited States of Lattice Hard-Core Bosons
Wenger,D. S. Weiss,Nature(London)440,900(2006)]。
Metastable states in stochastic systems are often characterized by the presence of small eigenvalues in the generator of the stochastic dynamics. We here show that metastability in many-body systems is not necessarily associated with small eigenvalues. Instead, many-body explosion of eigenmode expansion coefficients characterizes slow relaxation, which is demonstrated for two models, interacting particles in a double-well potential and the Fredrickson-Andersen model, the latter of which is a prototypical example of kinetically constrained models studied in glass and jamming transitions. Our re…
We develop deep autoregressive networks with multi channels to compute many-body systems with \emph{continuous} spin degrees of freedom directly. As a concrete example, we embed the two-dimensional XY model into the continuous-mixture networks and rediscover the Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) phase transition on a periodic square lattice. Vortices characterizing the quasi-long range order are accurately detected by the autoregressive neural networks. By learning the microscopic probability distributions from the macroscopic thermal distribution, the neural networks compute the free energy directly a…
A crossover between different power-law relaxation behaviors of many-body periodically driven integrable systems has come to light in recent years. We demonstrate using integrable quantum systems, that similar kinds of dynamical transitions may also occur in the relaxation of such systems following a sudden quench. Particularly, we observe two distinct power-law relaxation behaviors following a sudden quench in the integrable XY model, depending upon whether the quenched Hamiltonian lies in the commensurate or the incommensurate phase. The relaxation behavior for quenches at and near the bound…
We show that the onset of quantum chaos at infinite temperature in two many-body one-dimensional lattice models, the perturbed spin-1/2 XXZ and Anderson models, is characterized by universal behavior. Specifically, we show that the onset of quantum chaos is marked by maxima of the typical fidelity susceptibilities that scale with the square of the inverse average level spacing, saturating their upper bound, and that the strength of the integrability- or localization-breaking perturbation at these maxima decreases with increasing system size. We also show that the spectral function below the ``…
Polynomially filtered exact diagonalization method (POLFED) for large sparse matrices is introduced. The algorithm finds an optimal basis of a subspace spanned by eigenvectors with eigenvalues close to a specified energy target by a spectral transformation using a high order polynomial of the matrix. The memory requirements scale better with system size than in the state-of-the-art shift-invert approach. The potential of POLFED is demonstrated examining many-body localization transition in 1D interacting quantum spin-1/2 chains. We investigate the disorder strength and system size scaling of T…
We substantially extend our relaxation theory for perturbed many-body quantum systems from [Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 120602 (2020)] by establishing an analytical prediction for the time-dependent observable expectation values which depends on only two characteristic parameters of the perturbation operator: its overall strength and its range or band width. Compared to the previous theory, a significantly larger range of perturbation strengths is covered. The results are obtained within a typicality framework by solving the pertinent random matrix problem exactly for a certain class of banded pertu…
We investigate how the observable relaxation behavior of an isolated quantum many-body system is modified in response to weak-to-moderate perturbations within a nonperturbative typicality framework. A key role is played by the so-called perturbation profile, which characterizes the dependence of the perturbation matrix elements in the eigenbasis of the unperturbed Hamiltonian on the difference of the corresponding energy eigenvalues. In particular, a banded matrix structure is quantitatively captured by a perturbation profile which approaches zero for large energy differences. The temporal mod…
We investigate the relaxation dynamics in an isolated quantum many-body system. The stationary value of an observable after relaxation is a topic of researches in the field of quantum thermalization, since thermalization is a relaxation phenomena where this stationary value coincides with the equilibrium value. Therefore, computing the stationary value in quantum many-body systems is regarded as an important problem. We, however, prove that the stationary value in quantum many-body systems is incomputable. More precisely, we show that whether the stationary value is in the vicinity of a given …
