A 256-channel time-of-flight (TOF) electronics system has been developed for a beam line facility called "Back-n WNS" in China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS). This paper shows the structure and performance of electronics system and the test results in CSNS. A 256-channel photomultiplier tube (PMT) is chosen as the detector in this system. In order to acquire the time information from the PMT, an electronics system has been designed. The electronics system mainly includes one front-end board (FEB), four time-to-digital converter (TDC) boards and one clock distribution module (CDM). There are 256 channels on FEB and 64 channels on each TDC board. The FEB is connected to the PMT with high-density connectors and the TDC boards are connected to the FEB through 2m cables. The TDC boards are 6U size so that they can be PCI extensions for Instrumentation (PXI) cards. Data from TDC boards can be transferred to the PXI control card through the backboard. In order to make four TDC boards work synchronously, a CDM outputs four clock signals to TDC boards which are distributed from one clock source. The TDC boards achieve a timing resolution of 3.5ns by test with a signal generator. The TOF measurement system has been used in CSNS.
Plasma profiling time of flight mass spectrometry (PP-TOFMS) has recently gained interest, as it enables the elemental profiling of semiconductor structures with high depth resolution in short acquisition times. As recently shown by Tempez et al., PP-TOFMS can be used to obtain the composition in the structures for modern field effect transistors [1]. There, the results were compared to conventional SIMS measurements. In the present study, we compare PP-TOFMS measurements of an Al-/In-/GaN quantum well multi stack to established micro- and nano-analysis techniques like cathodoluminescence (CL)…
One of our two methods for fast-neutron imaging with spectrometric capability is presented here. It is a neutron-counting technique based on a hydrogenous neutron converter coupled to Gaseous Electron Multipliers (GEM). The principles of the detection techniques and the optimization of the converter, electron amplification and the readout are described. Evaluation of the properties are derived from a experiment in a pulsed neutron beam of spectral distribution between 2 and 10 MeV
The calculation of neutron reflectivity from raw time-of-flight data including instrumental corrections as well as improved resolution calculation is presented. The theoretical calculations are compared to experimental data measured on the vertical sample plane reflectometer D17 and the horizontal sample plane reflectometer FIGARO at the Institut Laue-Langevin, Grenoble, France (ILL). This article comprises the mathematical body of the time-of-flight reflectivity data reduction software COSMOS which is used on D17 and FIGARO.
The recent measurement of the lifetime of the free neutron using the beam method has an 8.7 s (4$σ$) discrepancy with UCN measurements. The goal of the BL3 experiment is to improve the statistical error of this measurement and help rule out systematic uncertainties as an explanation for the discrepancy. A well-characterized neutron flux detector with flat response is essential, since the neutron flux enters linearly into the neutron lifetime. I will present a new detector geometry optimization with uniform acceptance up to sixth order in neutron position.
Progress in neutron decay experiments requires better methods for the characterization of electron detectors. I show that for such \b{eta}-decay studies, electron time-of-flight can be used for in-situ calibration of electron detectors. Energy resolution down to a few keV can be reached for the lower part of the electron spectrum in neutron decay, where conventional calibration methods come to their limit. Novel time-of-flight methods can also be used to perform a complete experiment on electron backscattering from their detectors.
In gamma-ray spectroscopy, a number of neutrons are emitted from the nuclei together with the gamma-rays and these neutrons influence gamma-ray spectra. An obvious method of separating between neutrons and gamma-rays is based on the time-of-flight (tof) technique. This work aims obtaining tof distributions of gamma-rays and neutrons by using feed-forward artificial neural network (ANN). It was shown that, ANN can correctly classify gamma-ray and neutron events. Testing of trained networks on experimental data clearly shows up tof discrimination of gamma-rays and neutrons.
Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) is an experimental technique to detect material structures in the nanometer to micrometer range. The solution of the structural model constructed from SANS strongly depends on the accuracy of the reduced data. The time-of-flight (TOF) SANS data are dependent on the wavelength of the pulsed neutron source. Therefore, data reduction must be handled very carefully to transform measured neutron events into neutron scattering intensity. In this study, reduction algorithms for TOF SANS data are developed and optimized using simulated data from a virtual neutron …
A Neutron Time-Of-Flight (NTOF) spectrometer based on Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou (HIRFL) is developed for studies of neutron production of proton induced spallation reactions related to the ADS project. After the presentation of comparisons between calculated spallation neutron production double-differential cross sections and the available experimental one, a detailed description of NTOF spectrometer is given. Test beam results show that the spectrometer works well and data analysis procedures are established. The comparisons of the test beam neutron spectra with those of GEANT4 s…
A time-of-flight device was developed to characterize wavelength distribution and uniformity of a cold neutron beam. This device is very compact -- the distance of flight is $60$ cm -- but achieves very high resolution -- the intrinsic resolution $Δλ/λ=2.4\cdot 10^{-3}$ at $λ=0.89$ nm. The time-of-flight device is composed of a fixed slit, a disk rotating up to $216$ Hz and a neutron detector with a thin spherical conversion layer with the chopper slit in its focus. The device accepts the complete angular divergence of the initial neutron beam. The efficiency of neutron detection is constant o…
Calibration of three scintillators (EJ232Q, BC422Q and EJ410) in a time-of-flight (TOF) arrangement using a laser drive-neutron source is presented. The three plastic scintillator detectors were calibrated with gamma insensitive bubble detector spectrometers, which were absolutely calibrated over a wide range of neutron energies ranging from sub MeV to 20 MeV. A typical set of data obtained simultaneously by the detectors are shown, measuring the neutron spectrum emitted from a petawatt laser irradiated thin foil.
The exact resolution function in transfer vector for the reflectometer HERMÈS at Laboratoire Léon Brillouin is calculated as an example of neutron time-of-fligh spectrometer with double-disk chopper. Calculation accounts for wavelength distribution of the incident beam, tilt of the chopper axis, collimation and gravity, without approximation of gaussian distributions or independence of these different contributions. Numerical implementation is provided that matches the sections of the paper. We show that data fitting using this exact resolution function allows us to reach much better results t…
We have experimentally characterized the light-output response of a deuterated trans-stilbene (stilbene-d12) crystal to quasi-monoenergetic neutrons in the 0.8 to 4.4 MeV energy range. These data allowed us to perform neutron spectroscopy measurements of a DT 14.1 MeV source and a PuBe-239 source by unfolding the impinging neutron spectrum from the measured light-output response. The stilbene-d12 outperforms a H1-stilbene of similar size when comparing the shape of the unfolded spectra and the reference ones. These results confirm the viability of non-hygroscopic stilbene-d12 crystal for direc…
It is generally assumed by most of the small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) user community that a neutrons energy is unchanged during SANS measurements. Here, the scattering from water, specifically light water, was measured on the EQ-SANS instrument, a time-of-flight SANS instrument located at the Spallation Neutron Source of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. A significant inelastic process was observed in the TOF spectra of neutrons scattered from water. Analysis of the TOF spectra from the sample showed that the scattered neutrons have energies consistent with room-temperature thermal energie…
The suitability of a transportable 3He-spin filter as temporary broadband polarizer for a Time-of-Flight neutron reflectometer is demonstrated. A simple two-wavelength method for characterisation of a 3He-spin filter is proposed, which can be applied even if the absolute transmittance of the 3He-spin filter cannot be accurately determined. We demonstrate the data treatment procedure for extracting the spin-up and spin-down neutron reflectivity from measurements obtained with a time dependent 3He polarization. The extraction of a very weak magnetic signal from reflectivity data, measured on the…
The neutron time-of-flight (n_TOF) facility at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN) is a pulsed white-spectrum neutron spallation source producing neutrons for two experimental areas: the Experimental Area 1 (EAR1), located 185 m horizontally from the target, and the Experimental Area 2 (EAR2), located 20 m above the target. The target, based on pure lead, is impacted by a high-intensity 20-GeV/c pulsed proton beam. The facility was conceived to study neutron-nucleus interactions for neutron kinetic energies between a few meV to several GeV, with applications of interest for nuc…
A new double time-of-flight (dTOF) neutron spectroscopy technique has been developed for pulsed broad spectrum sources with a duty cycle that results in frame overlap, where fast neutrons from a given pulse overtake slower neutrons from previous pulses. Using a tunable beam at the 88-Inch Cyclotron at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, neutrons were produced via thick-target breakup of 16 MeV deuterons on a beryllium target in the cyclotron vault. The breakup spectral shape was deduced from a dTOF measurement using an array of EJ-309 organic liquid scintillators. Simulation of the neutron …
An analytical method is presented with allows to estimate the energy resolution of time-of-flight neutron spectrometers, as well as its partial contributions, over a dynamical range that extends from the elastic line to the accessible inelastic regions. Such a method, already successfully applied in the past to the TOSCA and HET neutron inelastic scattering spectrometers installed at the ISIS neutron spallation source [A M Gaspar, PhD Thesis, Universidade Tecnica de Lisboa, 2004], is here applied to the high resolution time-of-flight spectrometer TOFTOF, mainly dedicated to quasi-elastic neutr…
A new Small Angle Neutron Scattering instrument is proposed for the European Spallation Source. The pulsed source requires a time-of-flight analysis of the gathered neutrons at the detector. The optimal instrument length is found to be rather large, which allows for a polarizer and a versatile collimation. The polarizer allows for studying magnetic samples and incoherent background subtraction. The wide collimation will host VSANS and SESANS options that increase the resolution of the instrument towards um and tens of um, respectively. Two 1m2 area detectors will cover a large solid angle simu…
The MAPS direct geometry time-of-flight chopper spectrometer at the ISIS pulsed neutron and muon source has been in operation since 1999 and its novel use of a large array of position-sensitive neutron detectors paved the way for a later generations of chopper spectrometers around the world. Almost two decades of experience of user operations on MAPS, together with lessons learned from the operation of new generation instruments, led to a decision to perform three parallel upgrades to the instrument. These were to replace the primary beamline collimation with supermirror neutron guides, to ins…
Time of flight backscattering spectrometry (ToF-BS) was successfully implemented in a helium ion microscope (HIM). Its integration introduces the ability to perform laterally resolved elemental analysis as well as elemental depth profiling on the nm scale. A lateral resolution of $\leq$ 54 nm and a time resolution of $Δt \leq$ 17 ns $(Δt/t \leq 5.4\%)$ are achieved. By using the energy of the backscattered particles for contrast generation, we introduce a new imaging method to the HIM allowing direct elemental mapping as well as local spectrometry. In addition laterally resolved time of flight…
Evaluation of a method for time-of-flight, wavelength and distance calibration for neutron scattering instruments by means of a mini-chopper and standard neutron monitors
In this work we explore for the first time the applicability of using $γ$-ray imaging in neutron capture measurements to identify and suppress spatially localized background. For this aim, a pinhole gamma camera is assembled, tested and characterized in terms of energy and spatial performance. It consists of a monolithic CeBr$_3$ scintillating crystal coupled to a position-sensitive photomultiplier and readout through an integrated circuit AMIC2GR. The pinhole collimator is a massive carven block of lead. A series of dedicated measurements with calibrated sources and with a neutron beam incide…
An instrument and software algorithm is described for the purpose of characterization of large single crystals at the Alignment Facility (ALF) of the ISIS spallation neutron source. We describe a method for both characterizing the quality of the sample and also aligning it in a particular scattering plane. We present a software package written for this instrument and demonstrate its utility by way of an example of the structural characterization of large singles crystals of Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$. We suggest extensions and modifications of characterization instruments for future impro…
Recent progress in the development of novel organic scintillators necessitates modern characterization capabilities. As the primary means of energy deposition by neutrons in these materials is n-p elastic scattering, knowledge of the proton light yield is paramount. This work establishes a new model-independent method to continuously measure proton light yield in organic scintillators over a broad energy range. Using a deuteron breakup neutron source at the 88-Inch Cyclotron at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and an array of organic scintillators, the proton light yield of EJ-301 and EJ-…
The physical properties of polycrystalline materials depend on their microstructure, which is the nano-to-centimeter-scale arrangement of phases and defects in their interior. Such microstructure depends on the shape, crystallographic phase and orientation, and interfacing of the grains constituting the material. This article presents a new non-destructive 3D technique to study bulk samples with sizes in the cm range with a resolution of hundred micrometers: time-of-flight three-dimensional neutron diffraction (ToF 3DND). Compared to existing analogous X-ray diffraction techniques, ToF 3DND en…
DD and DT reaction rates may be compared to determine plasma temperatures in the 10--200 eV range. Distinguishing neutrons from these two reactions is difficult when yields are low or unpredictable. Time of flight methods fail if the source is extended in time. These neutrons may be distinguished because inelastic scattering of more energetic neutrons by carbon produces a 4.44 Mev gamma-ray, and because hydrogenous material preferentially attenuates lower energy neutrons. We describe a detector system that can discriminate between lower and higher energy neutrons for fluences as low as $\mathc…
We report results of tests of the MISANS technique at the CG-1D beamline at High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). A chopper at 40 Hz simulated a pulsed neutron source at the beamline. A compact turn-key MISANS module operating with the pulsed beam was installed and a well characterised MnSi sample was tested. The feasibility of application of high magnetic fields at the sample position was also explored. These tests demonstrate the great potential of this technique, in particular for examining magnetic and depolarizing samples, under extreme sample environment…
Measurements of neutron total cross-sections of natural bismuth in the neutron energy region from 0.1 eV to 100 eV have been performed by using the time-of-flight method at the Pohang Neutron Facility, which consists of an electron linear accelerator, a water-cooled tantalum target with a water moderator, and a 12-m-long time-of-flight path. A 6Li-ZnS(Ag) scintillator with a diameter of 12.5 cm and a thickness of 1.6 cm is employed as a neutron detector, and a piece of high purity natural bismuth metallic plates with a thickness of 3 mm is used for the neutron transmission measurement. The pre…
A new parasitic, mixed-field, neutron-dominated irradiation station has been recently commissioned at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN). The station is installed in the Neutron Time-Of-Flight (n\_TOF) facility, taking advantage of the secondary radiation produced by the neutron spallation target. The new station allows radiation damage studies to be performed in irradiation conditions that are closer to the ones encountered during the operation of particle accelerators; the irradiation tests carried out in the station will be complementary to the standard tests on materials, …
Measurement of Time Resolution of Scintillation Detectors with EQR-15 Silicon Photodetectors for the Time-of-Flight Neutron Detector of the BM@N Experiment
In any neutron scattering experiment the measurement of the position of the scattered neutrons and their respective velocities is necessary. In order to do so, a position sensitive detector as well as a way to determine the velocities is needed. Measuring the velocities can either be done by using only a single wavelength and therefore velocity or by creating pulses, where the start and end time of each pulse is known and registering the time of arrival at the detector, which is the case we want to consider here. This pulse shaping process in neutron scattering instruments is usually done by u…
A pulse shape analysis framework is described, which was developed for n_TOF-Phase3, the third phase in the operation of the n_TOF facility at CERN. The most notable feature of this new framework is the adoption of generic pulse shape analysis routines, characterized by a minimal number of explicit assumptions about the nature of pulses. The aim of these routines is to be applicable to a wide variety of detectors, thus facilitating the introduction of the new detectors or types of detectors into the analysis framework. The operational details of the routines are suited to the specific requirem…
The Time-Resolved Integrative Optical Neutron (TRION) detector was developed for Fast Neutron Resonance Radiography (FNRR), a fast-neutron transmission imaging method that exploits characteristic energy-variations of the total scattering cross-section in the En = 1-10 MeV range to detect specific elements within a radiographed object. As opposed to classical event-counting time of flight (ECTOF), it integrates the detector signal during a well-defined neutron Time of Flight window corresponding to a pre-selected energy bin, e.g., the energy-interval spanning a cross-section resonance of an ele…
In order to measure the total cross section for thermal neutrons, a photoneutron source (PNS, phase 1) has been developed for the acquisition of nuclear data for the Thorium Molten Salt Reactor (TMSR) at the Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics (SINAP). PNS is an electron LINAC pulsed neutron facility that uses the time-of-flight (TOF) technique. It records the neutron TOF and identifies neutrons and $γ$-rays by using a digital signal processing technique. The background is obtained by using a combination of employing 12.8 cm boron-loaded polyethylene(PEB) (5$\%$ w.t.) to block the flight pat…
The Multi-Grid detector technology has evolved from the proof-of-principle and characterisation stages. Here we report on the performance of the Multi-Grid detector, the MG.CNCS prototype, which has been installed and tested at the Cold Neutron Chopper Spectrometer, CNCS at SNS. This has allowed a side-by-side comparison to the performance of $^3$He detectors on an operational instrument. The demonstrator has an active area of 0.2 m$^2$. It is specifically tailored to the specifications of CNCS. The detector was installed in June 2016 and has operated since then, collecting neutron scattering …
Back-n is a white neutron experimental facility at China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS). The time structure of the primary proton beam make it fully applicable to use TOF (time-of-flight) method for neutron energy measuring. We implement the electronics of TOF measurement on the general-purpose readout electronics designed for all of the seven detectors in Back-n. The electronics is based on PXIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express eXtensions for Instrumentation) platform, which is composed of FDM (Field Digitizer Modules), TCM (Trigger and Clock Module), and SCM (Signal Conditioning …
Nanoscale fabrication and characterisation techniques critically underpin a vast range of fields, including materials science, nanoelectronics and nanobiotechnology. Focused ion beam (FIB) techniques are particularly appealing due to their high spatial resolution and widespread use for processing of nanostructured materials and devices. Here, we introduce FIB-induced fluorescence spectroscopy (FIB-FS) as a nanoscale technique for spectroscopic detection of atoms sputtered by an ion beam. We use semiconductor heterostructures to demonstrate nanoscale lateral and depth resolution and show that i…
Gadolinium-aluminum-gallium garnet Gd${}_{3}$Al${}_{2}$Ga${}_{3}$O${}_{12}$:Ce scintillator is demonstrated to be an excellent scintillation material for detector of fast neutrons for the first time. Moreover, its application allows to obtain different responses to neutrons depending on their energy spectrum. This is achieved because the material, firstly, has high content of Gd, which absorbs neutrons with following emission of $γ$-quanta, and, secondly, detects this radiation efficiently thanks to high stopping power, fast scintillation kinetics, high scintillation light yield and good energ…
Fast-neutron/gamma-ray pulse-shape discrimination has been performed for the organic liquid scintillators NE 213A and EJ 305 using a time-of-flight based neutron-tagging technique and waveform digitization on an event-by-event basis. Gamma-ray sources and a Geant4-based simulation were used to calibrate the scintillation-light yield. The difference in pulse shape for the neutron and gamma-ray events was analysed by integrating selected portions of the digitized waveform to produce a figure-of-merit for neutron/gamma-ray separation. This figure-of-merit has been mapped as a function of detector…
Results of experimental investigations of a neutron resonances width in planar waveguides using the time-of-flight reflectometer REMUR of the IBR-2 pulsed reactor are reported and comparison with theoretical calculations is presented. The intensity of the neutron microbeam emitted from the waveguide edge was registered as a function of the neutron wavelength and the incident beam angular divergence. The possible applications of this method for the investigations of layered nanostructures are discussed.
The velocity of neutrons from a pulsed neutron source is well-defined as a function of their arrival time. Electromagnetic neutron accelerator/decelerator synchronized with the neutron time-of-flight is capable of selectively changing the neutron velocity and concentrating the velocity distribution. Possible enhancement of the neutron intensity at a specific neutron velocity by orders of magnitude is discussed together with an experimental design.
We have analyzed and compared the performance of two novel fast-neutron imaging methods with time-of-flight spectroscopy capability. Using MCNP and GEANT code simulations of neutron and charged-particle transport in the detectors, key parameters such as detection efficiency, the amount of energy deposited in the converter and the spatial resolution of both detector variants have been evaluated.
The measurement of the neutron capture cross-section as a function of energy in the thermal range requires a precise knowledge of the absolute neutron flux. In this paper a new method of calibrating a thermal neutron beam using the controlled activation of sodium is described. The method is applied to the FP-14 Time Of Flight neutron beam line at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center to calibrate the beam to a precision of $\pm5$%.
We present the concept of a novel time-focusing technique for neutron spectrometers, which allows to disentangle time-focusing from beam divergence. The core of this approach is a double rotating-crystal monochromator that can be used to extract a larger wavelength band from a white beam, thus providing a higher flux at the sample compared to standard time-of-flight instruments, yet preserving energy resolution and beam collimation. The performances of a spectrometer based on this approach are quantitatively discussed in terms of possible incident wavelengths, flux at the sample and $(Q,E)$-re…
One of the critical longstanding issues in nuclear physics is the origin of the heavy elements such as platinum and uranium. The r-process hypothesis is generally supported as the process through which heavy elements are formed via explosive rapid neutron capture. Many of the nuclei involved in heavy-element synthesis are unidentified, short-lived, neutron-rich nuclei, and experimental data on their masses, half-lives, excited states, decay modes, and reaction rates with neutron etc., are incredibly scarce. The ultimate goal is to understand the origin of uranium. The nuclei along the pathway …

A pulse shape analysis method, designed to improve the performance of these devices by an optimized discrimination of the neutron signals from noise and background radiation, is proposed, de…
Neutron correlation spectroscopy can exceed direct spectroscopy in the incoming beam intensity by up to two orders of magnitude at the same energy resolution. However, the propagation of the counting noise in the correlation algorithm of data reduction is disadvantageous for the lowest intensity parts of the observed spectrum. To mitigate this effect at pulsed neutron sources we propose two dimensional time-of-flight recording of each neutron detection event: with respect to both the neutron source pulses and to the rotation phase of the pseudo-random beam modulation statistical chopper. We ha…
A laser calibration system was developed for monitoring and calibrating time of flight (TOF) scintillating detector arrays. The system includes setups for both small- and large-scale scintillator arrays. Following test-bench characterization, the laser system was recently commissioned in experimental Hall B at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility for use on the new Backward Angle Neutron Detector (BAND) scintillator array. The system successfully provided time walk corrections, absolute time calibration, and TOF drift correction for the scintillators in BAND. This showcases the g…
