We examine claims of strong gravity-darkening effects in the O-star components of WR+O binaries. We generate synthetic spectra for a wide range of parameters, and show that the line-width results are consistent with extensive measurements of O stars that are either single or are members of `normal' binaries. By contrast, the WR+O results are at the extremes of, or outside, the distributions of both models and other observations. Remeasurement of the WR+O spectra shows that they can be reconciled with other results by judicious choice of pseudo-continuum normalization. With this interpretation, the supersynchronous rotation previously noted for the O-star components in the WR+O binaries with the longest orbital periods appears to be unexceptional. Our investigation is therefore consistent with the aphorism that if the title of a paper ends with a question mark, the answer is probably `no'.
Eclipsing time variations have been observed for a wide range of binary systems, including post-common-envelope binaries. A frequently proposed explanation, apart from the possibility of having a third body, is the effect of magnetic activity, which may alter the internal structure of the secondary star, particularly its quadrupole moment, and thereby cause quasi-periodic oscillations. Here we present two compressible non-ideal magneto-hydrodynamical (MHD) simulations of the magnetic dynamo in a solar mass star, one of them with three times the solar rotation rate ("slow rotator"), the other o…
The objective of this work is to determine what fraction of red-giant (RG) stars shows photometric rotational modulation, and understand its origin. One of the underlying questions is the role of close binarity in this population, standing upon the fact that RGs in short-period binary systems (<150 days or so) have been observed to display strong rotational modulation. We select a sample of about 4500 relatively bright RGs observed by Kepler, and show that 370 of them (8%) display rotational modulation. Almost all have oscillation amplitudes below the median of the sample, while 30 of them are…
Tens of thousands of rotation periods have been measured in the Kepler fields, including a substantial fraction of rapid rotators. We use Gaia parallaxes to distinguish photometric binaries (PBs) from single stars on the unevolved lower main sequence, and compare their distribution of rotation properties to those of single stars both with and without APOGEE spectroscopic characterization. We find that 59% of stars with 1.5 day < P < 7 day lie 0.3 mag above the main sequence, compared with 28% of the full rotation sample. The fraction of stars in the same period range is 1.7 $\pm$ 0.1% of the t…
We study the relation between stellar rotation and magnetic activity for a sample of 134 bright, nearby M dwarfs observed in the Kepler Two-Wheel (K2) mission during campaigns C0 to C4. The K2 lightcurves yield photometrically derived rotation periods for 97 stars (79 of which without previous period measurement), as well as various measures for activity related to cool spots and flares. We find a clear difference between fast and slow rotators with a dividing line at a period of ~10d at which the activity level changes abruptly. All photometric diagnostics of activity (spot cycle amplitude, f…
It is still unclear how common the Sun is when compared to other similar stars in regards to some of its physical properties, such as rotation. Considering that gyrochronology relations are widely used today to estimate ages of stars in the main sequence, and that the Sun is used to calibrate it, it is crucial to assess if these procedures are acceptable. We analyze the rotational velocities -- limited by the unknown rotation axis inclination angle -- of an unprecedented large sample of solar twins in order to study the rotational evolution of Sun-like stars, and assess if the Sun is a typical…
We present the results of a search for unusually rapidly rotating giant stars in a large sample of K giants (~1300 stars) that had been spectroscopically monitored as potential targets for the Space Interferometry Mission's Astrometric Grid. The stars in this catalog are much fainter and typically more metal-poor than those of other catalogs of red giant star rotational velocities, but the spectra generally only have signal-to-noise (S/N) of ~20-60, making the measurement of the widths of individual lines difficult. To compensate for this, we have developed a cross-correlation method to derive…
CONTEXT: Many massive stars have nearby companions whose presence hamper their characterization through spectroscopy. AIMS: We want to obtain spatially resolved spectroscopy of close massive visual binaries to derive their spectral types. METHODS: We obtain a large number of short long-slit spectroscopic exposures of five close binaries under good seeing conditions, select those with the best characteristics, extract the spectra using multiple-profile fitting, and combine the results to derive spatially separated spectra. RESULTS: We demonstrate the usefulness of Lucky Spectroscopy by presenti…
In $γ$ Doradus stars, the g-mode period spacing shows an approximately linear relation with period. The slope is a new asteroseismic diagnostic, related to the rotation rate and the azimuthal order $m$. We report two automated methods, the `moving-window Fourier transform' and the `cross-correlation', to detect and measure the period spacings based on four-year light curves from the \textit{Kepler} satellite. The results show that the cross-correlation method performs better at detecting the period spacings and their slopes. In this paper, we apply our method to 22 $γ$ Dor stars with g-mode mu…
Measurement of the angular momenta of pre-main-sequence stars: early evolution of slow and fast rotators and empirical constraints on spin-down torque mechanisms
We examine how tides, stellar evolution, and magnetic braking shape the rotation period (P$_{rot}$) evolution of low-mass stellar binaries up to orbital periods (P$_{orb}$) of 100 d across a wide range tidal dissipation parameters using two common equilibrium tidal models. We find that many binaries with P$_{orb} < 20$ d tidally lock, and most with $P_{orb} < 4$ d tidally lock into synchronous rotation on circularized orbits. At short P$_{orb}$, tidal torques produce a population of fast rotators that single-star only models of magnetic braking fail to produce. In many cases, we show that the …
About seventy percent of intermediate-age star clusters in the Large Magellanic Clouds have been confirmed to have broad main sequence, multiple or extended turn-offs and dual red giant clumps. The observed result seems against the classical idea that such clusters are simple stellar populations. Although many models have been used for explaining the results via factors such as prolonged star formation history, metallicity spread, differential redenning, selection effect, observational uncertainty, stellar rotation, and binary interaction, the reason for the special color-magnitude diagrams is…
Subluminous B stars (sdBs) form the extremely hot end of the horizontal branch and are therefore related to the blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars. While the rotational properties of BHB stars have been investigated extensively, studies of sdB stars have concentrated on close binaries that are influenced by tidal interactions between their components. Here we present a study of 105 sdB stars, which are either single stars or in wide binaries where tidal effects become negligible. The projected rotational velocities have been determined by measuring the broadening of metal lines using high-reso…
The B-emission line stars are rapid rotators that were probably spun up by mass and angular momentum accretion through mass transfer in an interacting binary. Mass transfer will strip the donor star of its envelope to create a small and hot subdwarf remnant. Here we report on Hubble Space Telescope/STIS far-ultraviolet spectroscopy of a sample of Be stars that reveals the presence of the hot sdO companion through the calculation of cross-correlation functions of the observed and model spectra. We clearly detect the spectral signature of the sdO star in 10 of the 13 stars in the sample, and the…
Rapidly rotating stars are readily produced in binary systems. An accreting star in a binary system can be spun up by mass accretion and quickly approach the break-up limit. Mergers between two stars in a binary are expected to result in massive, fast rotating stars. These rapid rotators may appear as Be or Oe stars or at low metallicity they may be progenitors of long gamma-ray bursts. Given the high frequency of massive stars in close binaries it seems likely that a large fraction of rapidly rotating stars result from binary interaction. It is not straightforward to distinguish a a fast rota…
A new class of neutron stars (NSs) -- hot rapidly rotating non-accreting NSs, which we propose to call HOFNARs (HOt and Fast Non-Accreting Rotators) or "hot widows" (in analogy with "black widow" pulsars) -- is suggested. We argue that such stars should originate from the low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) provided that they were unstable with respect to excitation of $r$-modes at the end of accretion epoch (when their low-mass companions ceased to fill the Roche lobe). High temperature of "hot widows"/HOFNARs is maintained by $r$-mode dissipation rather than by accretion. We analyse observationa…
We have searched the Kepler light curves of ~3900 M-star targets for evidence of periodicities that indicate, by means of the effects of starspots, rapid stellar rotation. Several analysis techniques, including Fourier transforms, inspection of folded light curves, 'sonograms', and phase tracking of individual modulation cycles, were applied in order to distinguish the periodicities due to rapid rotation from those due to stellar pulsations, eclipsing binaries, or transiting planets. We find 178 Kepler M-star targets with rotation periods, P_rot, of < 2 days, and 110 with P_rot < 1 day. Some 3…
We study the evolution, rotation, and surface abundances of O-type dwarfs in the Small Magellanic Cloud. We analyzed the UV and optical spectra of twenty-three objects and derived photospheric and wind properties. The observed binary fraction of the sample is ~ 26%, which is compatible with more systematic studies, if one considers that the actual binary fraction is potentially larger owing to low-luminosity companions and that the sample excluded obvious spectroscopic binaries. The location of the fastest rotators in the H-R diagram indicates that these could be several Myr old. The offset in…
We use 5,337 spectroscopic $v \sin i$ measurements of Kepler dwarfs and subgiants from the APOGEE survey to study stellar rotation trends. We find a detection threshold of 10 km/s, which allows us to explore the spindown of intermediate-mass stars leaving the main sequence, merger products, young stars, and tidally-synchronized binaries. We see a clear distinction between blue stragglers and the field turnoff in $α$-rich stars, with a sharp rapid rotation cutoff for blue stragglers consistent with the Kraft break. We also find rapid rotation and RV variability in a sample of red straggler star…
CONTEXT. Many massive stars have nearby companions whose presence hamper their characterization through spectroscopy. AIMS. We want to continue obtaining spatially resolved spectroscopy of close massive visual binaries to derive their spectral types. METHODS. We have used lucky spectroscopy to obtain many short long-slit spectroscopic exposures of 19 close visual binaries under good seeing conditions. We selected those with the best characteristics, extracted the spectra using multiple-profile fitting, and combined the results to derive spatially separated spectra. The results are analyzed in …
We present rotational velocities for individual components of eleven very low mass (VLM) binaries with spectral types between M7 and L7.5. These results are based on observations taken with the near-infrared spectrograph, NIRSPEC, and the Keck II laser guide star adaptive optics (LGS AO) system. We find that the observed sources tend to be rapid rotators (vsini > 10 km/s), consistent with previous seeing-limited measurements of VLM objects. The two sources with the largest vsini, LP 349-25B and HD 130948C, are rotating at ~30% of their break up speed, and are among the most rapidly rotating VL…
Aims: I investigate the gravitational binding of a nearby common proper motion system in the young Castor moving group (tau ~ 200 Ma), formed by the bright quadruple star alpha Lib (Zubenelgenubi) and the young solar analog KU Lib. The system has an exceptionally wide angular separation, of about 2.6 deg, which corresponds to a projected physical separation of about 1.0 pc. Methods: I compile basic information of the system and compare its binding energy with those of other weakly bound systems in the field, and study the physical separations of resolved multiple systems in Castor. Results: KU…
Observational studies suggest that many OB stars are found within binary systems which may be expected to interact during their lifetimes. Significant mass transfer or merger of both components will modify evolutionary pathways, facilitating the production of exceptionally massive stars which will present as blue stragglers. Identification and characterisation of such objects is crucial if the outcomes of binary evolutionary channels are to be quantified. The massive cluster Westerlund 1 hosts a rich population of X-ray bright stars where the emission is thought to derive from the wind collisi…
We analyze {\it K2} light curves for 794 low-mass ($1 > M_* > 0.1$ $M_{\odot}$) members of the $\approx$650-Myr-old open cluster Praesepe, and measure rotation periods ($P_{rot}$) for 677 of these stars. We find that half of the rapidly rotating $>$0.3 $M_{\odot}$ stars are confirmed or candidate binary systems. The remaining $>0.3$ $M_{\odot}$ fast rotators have not been searched for companions, and are therefore not confirmed single stars. We found previously that nearly all rapidly rotating $>$0.3 $M_{\odot}$ stars in the Hyades are binaries, but we require deeper binary searches in Praesep…
Changes in planetary obliquity, or axial tilt, influence the climates on Earth-like planets. In the solar system, the Earth's obliquity is stabilized due to interactions with our moon and the resulting {small amplitude variations ($\sim$2.4\degree)} are beneficial for advanced life. Most Sun-like stars have at least one stellar companion and the habitability of circumstellar exoplanets is shaped by their stellar companion. We show that a stellar companion can dramatically change whether {Earth-like obliquity stability is} possible through planetary orbital precession relative to the binary orb…
With its exquisite astrometric precision, the latest Gaia data release includes $\sim$$10^5$ astrometric binaries, each of which have measured orbital periods, eccentricities, and the Thiele-Innes orbital parameters. Using these and an estimate of the luminous stars' masses, we derive the companion stars' masses, from which we identify a sample of 24 binaries in long period orbits ($P_{\rm orb}\sim{\rm yrs}$) with a high probability of hosting a massive ($>$1.4 $M_{\odot}$), dark companion: a neutron star (NS) or black hole (BH). The luminous stars in these binaries tend to be F-, G-, and K-dw…
M dwarfs remain active over longer timescales than their Sunlike counterparts, with potentially devastating implications for the atmospheres of their planets. However, the age at which fully-convective M dwarfs transition from active and rapidly rotating to quiescent and slowly rotating is poorly understood, as these stars remain rapidly rotating in the oldest clusters that are near enough for a large sample of low-mass M dwarfs to be studied. To constrain the spindown of these low-mass stars, we measure photometric rotation periods for field M dwarfs in wide binary systems, primarily using TE…
The majority of massive stars are found in close binaries which: (i) are prone to merge and (ii) are accompanied by another distant tertiary star (triples). Here, we study the evolution of the stellar post-merger binaries composed of the merger product and the tertiary companion. We find that post-merger binaries originating from compact stellar triples with outer semi-major axes $a_{\rm out,init}\lesssim10^1\,-\,10^2\,\rm AU$ provide a new way to form binary black hole mergers in the galactic field. By means of a population synthesis, we estimate their contribution to the total black hole mer…

A spectroscopic study was carried out on the surface chemical abundances of CNO and several heavier elements in the primary and secondary components of 5 eclipsing close binaries around A-type (AR Aur, beta Aur, YZ Cas, WW Aur, and RR Lyn), in order to investigate the nature of chemical differences between both components (being comparatively slow rotators alike due to tidal synchronization). Regarding the systems comprising similar components, beta Aur and WW Aur were confirmed to exhibit no compositional difference between the primary and secondary both showing almost the same Am anomaly, th…
We present the results of a systematic study of the magnetic fields and other properties of the Ap stars with resolved magnetically split lines. This study is based on new measurements of the mean magnetic field modulus, the mean longitudinal magnetic field, the crossover, the mean quadratic magnetic field, and the radial velocity of 43 stars, complemented by magnetic data from the literature for 41 additional stars. Stars with resolved magnetically split lines represent a significant fraction, of the order of several percent, of the whole population of Ap stars. Most of them are genuine slow …
UV spectroscopy and spectropolarimetry hold the key to understanding certain aspects of massive stars that are largely inaccessible with optical or longer wavelength observations. This is especially true for the rapidly-rotating Be and Bn stars, owing to their high temperatures, geometric asymmetries, binary properties, and evolutionary history. UV spectropolarimetric observations are extremely sensitive to the photospheric consequences of rapid rotation (i.e. oblateness, temperature, and surface gravity gradients). Our polarized radiative-transfer modelling predicts that with low-resolution U…
RX J0513.1+0851 and RX J0539.9+0956 were previously identified as young, low-mass, single-lined spectroscopic binary systems and classified as weak-lined T Tauri stars at visible wavelengths. Here we present radial velocities, spectral types, vsini values, and flux ratios for the components in these systems resulting from two-dimensional cross-correlation analysis. These results are based on high-resolution, near-infrared spectroscopy taken with the Keck II telescope to provide a first characterization of these systems as double-lined rather than single-lined. It applies the power of infrared …

Massive and intermediate-mass stars reside in binary systems much more frequently than low-mass stars. Binaries containing massive main-sequence (MS) component(s) are often characterised by eccentric orbits, and can be observed as eccentric ellipsoidal variables (EEVs). The orbital phase-dependent tidal potential acting on the components of EEV can induce tidally excited oscillations (TEOs). We investigate how the history of resonances between the eigenmode spectra of the EEV components and the tidal forcing frequencies depends on the initial parameters of the system. We synthesised 20,000 evo…
