We give a formula in terms of multidimensional resultants for an equation for the flex locus of a projective hypersurface, generalizing a classical result of Salmon for surfaces. Using this formula, we compute the dimension of this flex locus, and an upper bound for the degree of its defining equations. We also show that, when the hypersurface is generic, this bound is reached, and that the generic flex line is unique and has the expected order of contact with the hypersurface.
We show that the Zariski closure of the set of hypersurfaces of degree $M$ in ${\mathbb P}^{M}$, where $M\geq 5$, which are either not factorial or not birationally superrigid, is of codimension at least $\binom{M-3}{2}+1$ in the parameter space.
We consider the closed locus of $r$-tuples of hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}^r$ with positive dimensional intersection, and show in a large range of degrees that its largest component is the locus of $r$-tuples of hypersurfaces whose intersection contains a line. We then apply our methods to obtain new results on the largest components of the locus of hypersurfaces with positive dimensional singular loci and the locus of smooth hypersurfaces with a higher dimensional family of lines through a point than expected.
The Eckardt hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^{19}$ parameterizes smooth cubic surfaces with an Eckardt point, which is a point common to three of the $27$ lines on a smooth cubic surface. We describe the cubic surfaces lying on the singular locus of the model of this hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^4$, obtained via restriction to the space of cubic surfaces possessing a so-called Sylvester form. We prove that inside the moduli of cubics, the singular locus corresponds to a reducible surface with two rational irreducible components intersecting along two rational curves. The two curves intersect in two …
We show that if a cubic hypersurface with positive dual defect over the complex number field is not a cone, then either the hypersurface coincides with the secant variety of the singular locus, or the hypersurface contains a linear subvariety of dimension greater than the dual defect such that the intersection of the singular locus and a general contact locus is contained in the linear subvariety.
The characteristic polynomial of an $r$-tuple $(A_1,..., A_r)$ of $n \times n$ matrices is the determinant $\det(x_0 I + x_1 A_1 + ... + x_r A_r)$. We show that if $r$ is at least 3 and $A = (A_1,..., A_r)$ is an $r$-tuple of matrices in general position, then up to conjugacy there are only finitely many $r$-tuples of matrices with the same characteristic polynomial as $A$. Equivalently, the locus of determinantal hypersurfaces of degree $n$ in $P^r$ is irreducible of dimension $(r-1)n^2 + 1$.
We consider the locus of $r$-tuples of homogeneous forms of some fixed degree whose common vanishing locus in $\mathbb{P}^r$ is positive dimensional. We show that any component of maximal dimension of that locus either consists of homogeneous forms all vanishing on some line or homogeneous forms where a proper subset fail to intersect properly.
We show that for every smooth generic projective hypersurface $X\subset\mathbb P^{n+1}$, there exists a proper subvariety $Y\subsetneq X$ such that $\operatorname{codim}_X Y\ge 2$ and for every non constant holomorphic entire map $f\colon\mathbb C\to X$ one has $f(\mathbb C)\subset Y$, provided $°X\ge 2^{n^5}$. In particular, we obtain an effective confirmation of the Kobayashi conjecture for threefolds in $\mathbb P^4$.
We employ the formalism of vanishing cycles and perverse sheaves to introduce and study the vanishing cohomology of complex projective hypersurfaces. As a consequence, we give upper bounds for the Betti numbers of projective hypersurfaces, generalizing those obtained by different methods by Dimca in the isolated singularities case, and by Siersma-Tibăr in the case of hypersurfaces with a $1$-dimensional singular locus. We also prove a supplement to the Lefschetz hyperplane theorem for hypersurfaces, which takes the dimension of the singular locus into account, and we use it to give a new proof…
Given an ample real Hermitian holomorphic line bundle $L$ over a real algebraic variety $X$, the space of real holomorphic sections of $L^{\otimes d}$ inherits a natural Gaussian probability measure. We prove that the probability that the zero locus of a real holomorphic section $s$ of $L^{\otimes d}$ defines a maximal hypersurface tends to $0$ exponentially fast as $d$ goes to infinity. This extends to any dimension a result of Gayet and Welschinger valid for maximal real algebraic curves inside a real algebraic surface. The starting point is a low degree approximation property which relates …
Let $X$ be an irreducible, reduced complex projective hypersurface of degree $d$. A point $P$ not contained in $X$ is called uniform if the monodromy group of the projection of $X$ from $P$ is isomorphic to the symmetric group $S_d$. We prove that the locus of non--uniform points is finite when $X$ is smooth or a general projection of a smooth variety. In general, it is contained in a finite union of linear spaces of codimension at least $2$, except possibly for a special class of hypersurfaces with singular locus linear in codimension $1$. Moreover, we generalise a result of Fukasawa and Taka…

复解析超曲面芽f=0的极超曲面P可以通过分析与P的像相关联的某些牛顿多面体关于适当坐标的不变性,通过与f适当关联的某些态射来研究。我们发展了泰西耶的这个一般原理(见Variable Polaires。I.不变量polaires des singularites d 'hypersurfaces,Invent. We deal with the quasi-symmetric algebra introduced by Paolo Aluffi, here named (embedded) Aluffi algebra. The algebra is a sort of "intermediate" algebra between the symmetric algebra and the Rees algebra of an ideal, which serves the purpose of introducing the characteristic cycle of a hypersurface in intersection theory. The results described in the present paper have an algebraic flavor and naturally connect with various themes of commutative algebra, such as standard bases á la Hironaka, Artin--Rees like questions, Valabrega--Valla ideals, ideals of linear type, relation type and analytic…
We characterize the smallest codimension components of the Hodge locus of smooth degree $d$ hypersurfaces of the projective space $\mathbb{P}^{n+1}$ of even dimension $n$, passing through the Fermat variety (with $d\neq 3,4,6$). They correspond to the locus of hypersurfaces containing a linear algebraic cycle of dimension $\frac{n}{2}$. Furthermore, we prove that among all the local Hodge loci associated to a non-linear cycle passing through Fermat, the ones associated to a complete intersection cycle of type $(1,1,\ldots,1,2)$ attain the minimal possible codimension of their Zariski tangent s…
We prove birational superrigidity of every hypersurface of degree N in P^N with singular locus of dimension s, under the assumption that N is at least 2s+8 and it has only quadratic singularities of rank at least N-s. Combined with the results of I. A. Chel'tsov and T. de Fernex, this completes the list of birationally superrigid singular hypersurfaces with only ordinary double points except in dimension 4 and 6. Further we impose an additional condition on the base locus of a birational map to a Mori fiber space. Then we prove conditional birational superrigidity of certain smooth Fano hypers…
This article presents the theory of focal locus applied to the hypersurfaces in the projective space which are (finitely) covered by linear spaces and such that the tangent space is constant along these spaces.
We provide a classification of developable cubic hypersurfaces in $\mathbb P^4$. Using the correspondence between forms of degree $3$ on $\mathbb P^4$ and Artinian Gorenstein $\mathbb K$-algebras, given by Macaulay-Matlis duality, we describe the locus in ${\rm GOR}(1,5,5,1)$ corresponding to those algebras which satisfy the Strong Lefschetz property.
For a fixed integer $d \ge 5$, the Noether-Lefschetz locus parametrizes smooth degree $d$ complex hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}^3$ with Picard number greater than $1$. There are infinitely many irreducible components of this locus. The aim of this article is to understand the scheme structure of these components. In particular, we study when is such a component non-reduced. We give a criterion for such a component to be non-reduced. Finally, we give examples of such components.
We prove a formula for the polar degree of projective hypersurfaces in terms of the Milnor data of the singularities, extending to 1-dimensional singularities the Dimca-Papadima result for isolated singularities. We discuss the semi-continuity of the polar degree in deformations, and we classify the homaloidal cubic surfaces with 1-dimensional singular locus. Some open questions are pointed out along the way.
Given a nonconstant polynomial map over the reals having an isolated critical point in the origin and with zero locus of positive dimension, we establish a formula for the singular homology groups of a Milnor fibre relative to its boundary.
Inspired by recent work of Kopparty-Moshkovitz-Zuiddam and motivated by problems in combinatorics and hypergraphs, we introduce the notion of the symmetric geometric rank of a symmetric tensor. This quantity is equal to the codimension of the singular locus of the hypersurface associated to the tensor. We first derive fundamental properties of the symmetric geometric rank. Then, we study the space of symmetric tensors of prescribed symmetric geometric rank, which are spaces of homogeneous polynomials whose corresponding hypersurfaces have a singular locus of bounded codimension.
This paper is a study of the so-called `ricochet configuration' (or $R$-configuration) which arises in the context of Pascal's theorem. We give a geometric proof of the fact that a specific pair of Pascal lines is coincident for a sextuple in $R$-configuration. We calculate the symmetry group of a generic $R$-configuration, as well as the degree of the subvariety ${\mathcal R} \subseteq {\mathbb P}^6$ of all such configurations. We also determine the $SL(2)$-equivariant defining equations for ${\mathcal R}$, and show that it is an ideal-theoretic complete intersection of two invariant hypersur…
The flex locus parameterizes plane cubics with three collinear cocritical points under a projection, and the gothic locus arises from quadratic differentials with zeros at a fiber of the projection and with poles at the cocritical points. The flex and gothic loci provide the first example of a primitive, totally geodesic subvariety of moduli space and new ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{R})$-invariant varieties in Teichmüller dynamics, as discovered by McMullen-Mukamel-Wright. In this paper we determine the divisor class of the flex locus as well as various tautological intersection numbers on the gothic …
The goal of this paper is to propose a theory of mirror symmetry for varieties of general type. Using Landau-Ginzburg mirrors as motivation, we describe the mirror of a hypersurface of general type (and more generally varieties of non-negative Kodaira dimension) as the critical locus of the zero fibre of a certain Landau-Ginzburg potential. The critical locus carries a perverse sheaf of vanishing cycles. Our main results shows that one obtains the interchange of Hodge numbers expected in mirror symmetry. This exchange is between the Hodge numbers of the hypersurface and certain Hodge numbers d…
In this article we analyze the implicitization problem of the image of a rational map $ϕ: X --> P^n$, with $T$ a toric variety of dimension $n-1$ defined by its Cox ring $R$. Let $I:=(f_0,...,f_n)$ be $n+1$ homogeneous elements of $R$. We blow-up the base locus of $ϕ$, $V(I)$, and we approximate the Rees algebra $Rees_R(I)$ of this blow-up by the symmetric algebra $Sym_R(I)$. We provide under suitable assumptions, resolutions $\Z.$ for $Sym_R(I)$ graded by the torus-invariant divisor group of $X$, $Cl(X)$, such that the determinant of a graded strand, $\det((\Z.)_μ)$, gives a multiple of the i…
The flex divisor of a primitively polarized K3 surface $(X,L)$ of degree $L^2=2d$ is, generically, the locus of all points $x\in X$ for which there exists a pencil $V\subset |L|$ whose base locus is $\{x\}$. We show that the flex divisor lies in the linear system $|n_dL|$ where $n_d=(2d+1)C(d)^2$ and $C(d)$ is the Catalan number. We also show that there is a well-defined notion of flex divisor over the whole moduli space $F_{2d}$ of polarized K3 surfaces.
In this paper, we study the zero loci of local systems of the form $δΠ$, where $Π$ is the period sheaf of the universal family of CY hypersurfaces in a suitable ambient space $X$, and $δ$ is a given differential operator on the space of sections $V^\vee=Γ(X,K_X^{-1})$. Using earlier results of three of the authors and their collaborators, we give several different descriptions of the zero locus of $δΠ$. As applications, we prove that the locus is algebraic and in some cases, non-empty. We also give an explicit way to compute the polynomial defining equations of the locus in some cases. This de…
In this article we use a theorem of Carlson and Griffiths and compute periods of linear algebraic cycles inside the Fermat variety of even dimension $n$ and degree $d$. As an application, for examples of $n$ and $d$ we prove that the locus of hypersurfaces containing two linear cycles whose intersection is of low dimension, is a reduced component of the Hodge locus in the underlying parameter space. We also check the same statement for hypersurfaces containing a complete intersection algebraic cycle. Our result confirms the Hodge conjecture for Hodge cycles obtained by the monodromy of the hom…
We prove that the determinantal complexity of a hypersurface of degree $d > 2$ is bounded below by one more than the codimension of the singular locus, provided that this codimension is at least $5$. As a result, we obtain that the determinantal complexity of the $3 \times 3$ permanent is $7$. We also prove that for $n> 3$, there is no nonsingular hypersurface in $\mathbf{P}^n$ of degree $d$ that has an expression as a determinant of a $d \times d$ matrix of linear forms while on the other hand for $n \le 3$, a general determinantal expression is nonsingular. Finally, we answer a question of R…
In this paper, we consider a problem of counting multiplicities. We fix a counting function of multiplicity of rational points in a hypersurface of a projective space over a finite field, and we give an upper bound for the sum with respect to this counting function in terms of the degree of the hypersurface, the dimension and the cardinality of the finite field. This upper bound gives a description of the complexity of the singular locus of this hypersurface. In order to obtain this upper bound, we introduce a notion called intersection tree by intersection theory. We construct a sequence of i…
In this paper we give different compactifications for the domain and the codomain of an affine rational map $f$ which parametrizes a hypersurface. We show that the closure of the image of this map (with possibly some other extra hypersurfaces) can be represented by a matrix of linear syzygies. We compactify $\Bbb {A}^{n-1}$ into an $(n-1)$-dimensional projective arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay subscheme of some $\Bbb {P}^N$. One particular interesting compactification of $\Bbb {A}^{n-1}$ is the toric variety associated to the Newton polytope of the polynomials defining $f$. We consider two diffe…
We propose and study a generalized version of the Lipman-Zariski conjecture: let $(x \in X)$ be an $n$-dimensional singularity such that for some integer $1 \le p \le n - 1$, the sheaf $Ω_X^{[p]}$ of reflexive differential $p$-forms is free. Does this imply that $(x \in X)$ is smooth? We give an example showing that the answer is no even for $p = 2$ and $X$ a terminal threefold. However, we prove that if $p = n - 1$, then there are only finitely many log canonical counterexamples in each dimension, and all of these are isolated and terminal. As an application, we show that if $X$ is a projecti…
We relate the geometry of curves to the notion of hyperbolicity in real algebraic geometry. A hyperbolic variety is a real algebraic variety that (in particular) admits a real fibered morphism to a projective space whose dimension is equal to the dimension of the variety. We study hyperbolic varieties with a special interest in the case of hypersurfaces that admit a real algebraic ruling. The central part of the paper is concerned with secant varieties of real algebraic curves where the real locus has the maximal number of connected components, which is determined by the genus of the curve. Fo…
In this article we study forbidden loci and typical ranks of forms with respect to the embeddings of $\mathbb P^1\times \mathbb P^1$ given by the line bundles $(2,2d)$. We introduce the Ranestad-Schreyer locus corresponding to supports of non-reduced apolar schemes. We show that, in those cases, this is contained in the forbidden locus. Furthermore, for these embeddings, we give a component of the real rank boundary, the hypersurface dividing the minimal typical rank from higher ones. These results generalize to a class of embeddings of $\mathbb P^n\times \mathbb P^1$. Finally, in connection w…
