The ability to control multidimensional quantum systems is key for the investigation of fundamental science and for the development of advanced quantum technologies. Here we demonstrate a multidimensional integrated quantum photonic platform able to robustly generate, control and analyze high-dimensional entanglement. We realize a programmable bipartite entangled system with dimension up to $15 \times 15$ on a large-scale silicon-photonics quantum circuit. The device integrates more than 550 photonic components on a single chip, including 16 identical photon-pair sources. We verify the high precision, generality and controllability of our multidimensional technology, and further exploit these abilities to demonstrate key quantum applications experimentally unexplored before, such as quantum randomness expansion and self-testing on multidimensional states. Our work provides a prominent experimental platform for the development of multidimensional quantum technologies.
The use of multidimensional entanglement opens new perspectives for quantum information processing. However, an important challenge in practice is to certify and characterize multidimensional entanglement from measurement data that are typically limited. Here, we report the certification and quantification of two-photon multidimensional energy-time entanglement between many temporal modes, after one photon has been stored in a crystal. We develop a method for entanglement quantification which makes use of only sparse data obtained with limited resources. This allows us to efficiently certify a…
Quantum entanglement is usually considered a fragile quantity and decoherence through coupling to an external environment, such as a thermal reservoir, can quickly destroy the entanglement resource. This doesn't have to be the case and the environment can be engineered to assist in the formation of entanglement. We investigate a system of qubits and higher dimensional spins interacting only through their mutual coupling to a reservoir. We explore the entanglement of multipartite and multidimensional system as mediated by the bath and show that at low temperatures and intermediate coupling stre…
Characterizing high-dimensional entangled states is of crucial importance in quantum information science and technology. Recent theoretical progress has been made to extend the Hardy's paradox into a general scenario with multisetting multidimensional systems, which can surpass the bound limited by the original version. Hitherto, no experimental verification has been conducted to verify such a Hardy's paradox, as most of previous experimental efforts were restricted to two-dimensional systems. Here, based on two-photon high-dimensional orbital angular momentum (OAM) entanglement, we report the…
Matrix permanents arise naturally in the context of linear optical networks fed with nonclassical states of light. In this letter we tie the computational complexity of a class of multi-dimensional integrals to the permanents of large matrices using a simple quantum optics argument. In this way we prove that evaluating integrals in this class is \textbf{\#P}-hard. Our work provides a new approach for using methods from quantum physics to prove statements in computer science.
Standard Quantum Limit (SQL) of a classical mechanical force detection results from quantum back action perturbing evolution of a mechanical system. In this paper we show that usage of a multidimensional optical transducer may enable a broadband quantum back action evading measurement. We study a corresponding technique for measurement of a resonant signal force acting on a linear mechanical oscillator coupled to an optical system with three optical modes with separation nearly equal to the mechanical frequency. The measurement is performed by optical pumping of the central optical mode and me…
Multiplexed quantum memories and high-dimensional entanglement can improve the performance of quantum repeaters by promoting the entanglement generation rate and the quantum communication channel capacity. Here, we experimentally generate a high-dimensional entangled state between a photon and a collective spin wave excitation stored in the multiplexed atomic quantum memory. We verify the entanglement dimension by the quantum witness and the entanglement of formation. Then we use the high-dimensional entangled state to test the violation of the Bell-type inequality. Our work provides an effect…
In this work, we provide a means to quantify genuine tripartite entanglement in arbitrary (pure and mixed) continuous-variable states as measured by the Tripartite Entanglement of formation -- a resource-based measure quantifying genuine multi-partite entanglement in units of elementary Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states called gebits. Furthermore, we predict its effectiveness in quantifying the tripartite spatial and energy-time entanglement in photon triplets generated in cascaded spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC), and find that ordinary nonlinear optics can be a substantia…
The concept of `flat optics' is quickly conquering different fields of photonics, but its implementation in quantum optics is still at infancy. In particular, polarization entanglement, which is central to quantum photonics due to the simplicity of polarization qubit encoding and control, is so far not realized on flat platforms. Meanwhile, relaxed phase matching of flat nonlinear optical sources enables enormous freedom in tailoring their polarization properties. Here we use this freedom to generate photon pairs with tunable polarization entanglement via spontaneous parametric down-conversion…
Quantum entanglement plays a key role in both understanding the fundamental aspects of quantum physics and realizing various quantum devices for practical applications. Here we propose how to achieve coherent switch of optomechanical entanglement in an optical whispering-gallery-mode resonator, by tuning the phase difference of the driving lasers. We find that the optomechanical entanglement and the associated two-mode quantum squeezing can be well tuned in a highly asymmetric way, providing an efficient way to protect and enhance quantum entanglement against optical backscattering, in compari…
Quantum entanglement is a crucial resource for a wide variety of quantum technologies. However, the current state-of-art methods to generate quantum entanglement in optomechanical systems are not as efficient as all-optical methods utilizing nonlinear crystals. This article proposes a new scheme in which two single-mode squeezed light fields are injected into an optomechanical cavity. We demonstrate through our numerical simulations that the quantum entanglement can be substantially enhanced with the careful selection of squeezing strength and squeezing angle of the two quadrature squeezed lig…
Correlated photons inspire abundance of metrology-related platforms, which benefit from quantum (anti-) correlations and outperform their classical-light counterparts. While such demonstrations mainly focus on entanglement, the role of photon exchange-phase and degree of distinguishability have not been widely utilized in quantum-enhanced applications. Using an interferometric setup we show that even at low degree entanglement, when a two-photon wave-function is coupled to matter, it is encoded with a reliable "which pathway?" information. An interferometric exchange-phase-cycling protocol is …
Promising access to high-speed quantum networks relies on the creation of high-dimensional entangled memories that provide quantum communication with higher capacity of noisy quantum channels, thereby reducing the transmission time of information. Yet, the distribution of multidimensional entanglement between remote memory nodes is still faintly investigated. We propose an experimentally feasible protocol of deterministic generation of high-dimensional entanglement between distant multi-level atoms confined in high-finesse optical cavities and driven by laser pulses. Three-dimensional entangle…
Quantum transduction between microwave and optics can be realized by quantum teleportation if given reliable microwave-optical entanglement, namely entanglement-based quantum transduction. To realize this protocol, an entangled source with high-fidelity between the two frequencies is necessary. In this paper, we study the microwave and optical entanglement generation based on a generic cavity electro-optomechanical system in the strong coupling regime. Splittings are shown in the microwave and optical output spectra and the frequency entanglement between the two modes is quantified. We show th…
Quantum transduction refers to the coherent conversion between microwave and optical states, which can be achieved by quantum teleportation if given high fidelity microwave-optical entanglement, namely entanglement-based quantum transduction. Reliable microwave-optical entanglement can be generated using various platforms. In this paper, we base the discussion on piezo-optomechanical system and make the teleportation induced conversion scheme more concrete in the framework of quantum channel theory. By comparing the quantum capacity between the entanglement-based conversion channel and the tra…
Recent proposals and advances in quantum simulations, quantum cryptography and quantum communications substantially rely on quantum entanglement formation. Contrary to the conventional wisdom that dissipation destroys quantum coherence, coupling with a dissipative environment can also generate entanglement. We consider a system composed of two quantum dot qubits coupled with a common, damped surface plasmon mode; each quantum dot is also coupled to a separate photonic cavity mode. Cavity quantum electrodynamics calculations show that upon optical excitation by a femtosecond laser pulse, entang…
We demonstrate quantum entanglement of two trapped atomic ion qubits using a sequence of ultrafast laser pulses. Unlike previous demonstrations of entanglement mediated by the Coulomb interaction, this scheme does not require confinement to the Lamb-Dicke regime and can be less sensitive to ambient noise due to its speed. To elucidate the physics of an ultrafast phase gate, we generate a high entanglement rate using just 10 pulses, each of $\sim20$ ps duration, and demonstrate an entangled Bell-state with $(76\pm1)$% fidelity. These results pave the way for entanglement operations within a lar…
We theoretically proposed one of the approaches achieving the quantum entanglement between light and microwave by means of electro-optic effect. Based on the established full quantum model of electro-optic interaction, the entanglement characteristics between light and microwave are studied by using the logarithmic negativity as a measure of the steady-state equilibrium operating point of the system. The investigation shows that the entanglement between light and microwave is a complicated function of multiple physical parameters, the parameters such as ambient temperature, optical detuning, m…
A Quantum Internet, i.e., a global interconnection of quantum devices, is the long term goal of quantum communications, and has so far been based on two-dimensional systems (qubits). Recent years have seen a significant development of high-dimensional quantum systems (qudits). While qudits present higher photon information efficiency and robustness to noise, their use in quantum networks present experimental challenges due to the impractical resources required in high-dimensional quantum repeaters. Here, we show that such challenges can be met via the use of standard quantum optical resources,…
Quantum light is a key resource for promoting quantum technology. One such class of technology aims to improve the precision of optical measurements using engineered quantum states of light. In this study, we investigate transmission measurement of frequency-entangled broadband photon pairs generated via parametric down-conversion with a monochromatic laser. It is observed that state-to-state dynamics in the system under study are temporally resolved by adjusting the path difference between the entangled twin beams when the entanglement time is sufficiently short. The non-classical photon corr…
In recent development of quantum technologies, a frequency conversion of quantum signals has been studied widely. We investigate the optic-microwave entanglement that is generated by applying an electro-optomechanical frequency conversion scheme to one mode in an optical two-mode squeezed vacuum state. We quantify entanglement of the converted two-mode Gaussian state, where surviving entanglement of the state is analyzed with respect to the parameters of the electro-optomechanical system. Furthermore, we show that there exists an upper bound for the entanglement that survives after the convers…
We study the potential of adaptive optics (AO) to protect entanglement of high-dimensional photonic orbital-angular-momentum (OAM) states against turbulence-induced phase distortions. We demonstrate that AO is able to reduce crosstalk among the OAM modes and, consequently, the entanglement decay as well as photon losses. A test of the AO-stabilized output state against high-dimensional Bell inequalities shows that the transmitted entanglement allows for secure communication, even in the strong scintillation regime.
The quantum nature of the state of a bosonic quantum field manifests itself in its entanglement, coherence, or optical nonclassicality which are each known to be resources for quantum computing or metrology. We provide quantitative and computable bounds relating entanglement measures with optical nonclassicality measures. These bounds imply that strongly entangled states must necessarily be strongly optically nonclassical. As an application, we infer strong bounds on the entanglement that can be produced with an optically nonclassical state impinging on a beam splitter. For Gaussian states, we…
The concatenated Greenberger-Horne-Zeiglinger (C-GHZ) state which is a new type of logic-qubit entanglement has attracted a lot of attentions recently. We present a feasible entanglement concentration protocol (ECP) for logic-qubit entanglement. This ECP is based on the linear optics, and it does not know the initial coefficients of the less-entangled C-GHZ state. This protocol can be extended to arbitrary C-GHZ state. This protocol may be useful in future quantum information processing tasks.
We propose a scheme of loss-resilient entanglement swapping between two distant parties via an imperfect optical channel. In this scheme, two copies of hybrid entangled states are prepared and the continuous-variable parts propagate through lossy media. In order to perform successful entanglement swapping, several different measurement schemes are considered for the continuousvariable parts such as single-photon detection for ideal cases and a homodyne detection for practical cases. We find that the entanglement swapping using hybrid states with small amplitudes offers larger entanglement than…
We demonstrate, theoretically and experimentally, the generation of hexapartite modal entanglement by the optical parametric oscillator (OPO) operating above the oscillation threshold. We show that the OPO generates a rich structure of entanglement among sets of six optical sideband modes interacting through the non-linear crystal. The class of quantum states thus produced can be controlled by a single parameter, the power of the external laser that pumps the system. Our platform allows for the generation of massive entanglement among many optical modes with well defined but vastly different f…
