The non-equilibrium evolution of the block entanglement entropy is investigated in the XY chain in a transverse magnetic field after the Hamiltonian parameters are suddenly changed from and to arbitrary values. Using Toeplitz matrix representation and multidimensional phase methods, we provide analytic results for large blocks and for all times, showing explicitly the linear growth in time followed by saturation. The consequences of these analytic results are discussed and the effects of a finite block length is taken into account numerically.
We consider the time evolution of the gaps of the entanglement spectrum for a block of consecutive sites in finite transverse field Ising chains after sudden quenches of the magnetic field. We provide numerical evidence that, whenever we quench at or across the quantum critical point, the time evolution of the ratios of these gaps allows to obtain universal information. They encode the low-lying gaps of the conformal spectrum of the Ising boundary conformal field theory describing the spatial bipartition within the imaginary time path integral approach to global quenches at the quantum critica…
We investigate the evolution of complexity and entanglement following a quench in a one-dimensional topological system, namely the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. We demonstrate that complexity can detect quantum phase transitions and shows signatures of revivals; this observation provides a practical advantage in information processing. We also show that the complexity saturates much faster than the entanglement entropy in this system, and we provide a physical argument for this. Finally, we demonstrate that complexity is a less sensitive probe of topological order, compared with measures of enta…
We study the time evolution of the entanglement negativity after a local quantum quench in (1+1)-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs), which we introduce by suddenly joining two initially decoupled CFTs at their endpoints. We calculate the negativity evolution for both adjacent intervals and disjoint intervals explicitly. For two adjacent intervals, the entanglement negativity grows logarithmically in time right after the quench. After developing a plateau-like feature, the entanglement negativity drops to the ground-state value. For the case of two spatially separated intervals, a ligh…
Quantum entanglement and its main quantitative measures, the entanglement entropy and entanglement negativity, play a central role in many body physics. An interesting twist arises when the system considered has symmetries leading to conserved quantities: Recent studies introduced a way to define, represent in field theory, calculate for 1+1D conformal systems, and measure, the contribution of individual charge sectors to the entanglement measures between different parts of a system in its ground state. In this paper, we apply these ideas to the time evolution of the charge-resolved contributi…
Global quantum quench with a finite quench rate which crosses critical points is known to lead to universal scaling of correlation functions as functions of the quench rate. In this work, we explore scaling properties of the entanglement entropy of a subsystem in a harmonic chain during a mass quench which asymptotes to finite constant values at early and late times and for which the dynamics is exactly solvable. When the initial state is the ground state, we find that for large enough subsystem sizes the entanglement entropy becomes independent of size. This is consistent with Kibble-Zurek sc…
Quantum entanglement may have various origins ranging from solely interaction-driven quantum correlations to single-particle effects. Here, we explore the dependence of entanglement on time-dependent single-particle basis transformations in fermionic quantum many-body systems, thus aiming at isolating single-particle sources of entanglement growth in quench dynamics. Using exact diagonalization methods, for paradigmatic non-integrable models we compare to the standard real space cut various physically motivated bipartitions. Moreover, we search for a minimal entanglement basis using local opti…
We study the time evolution of the logarithmic negativity after a global quantum quench. In a 1+1 dimensional conformal invariant field theory, we consider the negativity between two intervals which can be either adjacent or disjoint. We show that the negativity follows the quasi-particle interpretation for the spreading of entanglement. We check and generalise our findings with a systematic analysis of the negativity after a quantum quench in the harmonic chain, highlighting two peculiar lattice effects: the late birth and the sudden death of entanglement.
We compute concurrence and negativity as measures of two-site entanglement generated by a power-law quench (characterized by a rate 1/tau and an exponent alpha) which takes an anisotropic XY chain in a transverse field through a quantum critical point (QCP). We show that only the even-neighbor pairs of sites get entangled in such a process. Moreover, there is a critical rate of quench, 1/tau_c, above which no two-site entanglement is generated; the entire entanglement is multipartite. The ratio of the two-site entanglements between consecutive even neighbors can be tuned by changing the quench…
A formidable perspective in understanding quantum criticality of a given many-body system is through its entanglement contents. Until now, most progress are only limited to the disorder-free case. Here, we develop an efficient scheme to compute the entanglement entropy of $(2+1)$-dimensional quantum critical points with randomness, from a conceptually novel angle where the quenched disorder can be considered as dimensionally reducible interactions. As a concrete example, we reveal novel entanglement signatures of $(2+1)$-dimensional Dirac fermion exposed to a random magnetic field, which hosts…
We study the growth of entanglement in quantum systems with a conserved quantity exhibiting diffusive transport, focusing on how initial inhomogeneities are imprinted on the entropy. We propose a simple effective model, which generalizes the minimal cut picture of \textit{Jonay et al.} in such a way that the `line tension' of the cut depends on the local entropy density. In the case of noisy dynamics, this is described by a Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation coupled to a diffusing field. We investigate the resulting dynamics and find that initial inhomogeneities of the conserved charge give ri…
We show that the dynamics resulting from preparing a one-dimensional quantum system in the ground state of two decoupled parts, then joined together and left to evolve unitarily with a translational invariant Hamiltonian (a local quench), can be described by means of quantum field theory. In the case when the corresponding theory is conformal, we study the evolution of the entanglement entropy for different bi-partitions of the line. We also consider the behavior of one- and two-point correlation functions. All our findings may be explained in terms of a picture, that we believe to be valid mo…
We compute the total amount of entanglement produced between momentum modes at late times after a smooth mass quench in free bosonic and fermionic quantum field theories. The entanglement and Rényi entropies are obtained in closed form as a function of the parameters characterizing the quench protocol. For bosons, we show that the entanglement production is more significant for light modes and for fast quenches. In particular, infinitely slow or adiabatic quenches do not produce any entanglement. Depending on the quench profile, the decrease as a function of the quench rate $δt$ can be either …
We show that block entanglement entropies in one-dimensional systems close to a quantum critical point can in principle be measured in terms of the population of low-lying energy levels following a certain type of local quantum quench.
We give a pedagogical introduction to the Generalized Hydrodynamic approach to inhomogeneous quenches in integrable many-body quantum systems. We review recent applications of the theory, focusing in particular on two classes of problems: bipartitioning protocols and trap quenches, which represent two prototypical examples of broken translational symmetry in either the system initial state or post-quench Hamiltonian. We report on exact results that have been obtained for generic time-dependent correlation functions and entanglement evolution, and discuss in detail the range of applicability of…
We compute the entanglement and Rényi entropy growth after a global quench in various dimensions in free scalar field theory. We study two types of quenches: a boundary state quench and a global mass quench. Both of these quenches are investigated for a strip geometry in 1, 2, and 3 spatial dimensions, and for a spherical geometry in 2 and 3 spatial dimensions. We compare the numerical results for massless free scalars in these geometries with the predictions of the analytical quasiparticle model based on EPR pairs, and find excellent agreement in the limit of large region sizes. At subleading…
We study the time evolution in the transverse-field Ising chain subject to quantum quenches of finite duration, ie, a continuous change in the transverse magnetic field over a finite time. Specifically, we consider the dynamics of the total energy, one- and two-point correlation functions and Loschmidt echo during and after the quench as well as their stationary behaviour at late times. We investigate how different quench protocols affect the dynamics and identify universal properties of the relaxation.
We investigate bipartite entanglement in random quantum $XY$ models at equilibrium. Depending on the intrinsic time scales associated with equilibration of the random parameters and measurements associated with observation of the system, we consider two distinct kinds of disorder, namely annealed and quenched disorders. We conduct a comparative study of the effects of disorder on nearest-neighbor entanglement, when the nature of randomness changes from being annealed to quenched. We find that entanglement properties of the annealed and quenched disordered systems are drastically different from…
The time evolution of the entanglement entropy in non-equilibrium quantum systems provides crucial information about the structure of the time-dependent state. For quantum quench protocols, by combining a quasiparticle picture for the entanglement spreading with the exact knowledge of the stationary state provided by Bethe ansatz, it is possible to obtain an exact and analytic description of the evolution of the entanglement entropy. Here we discuss the application of these ideas to several integrable models. First we show that for non-interacting systems, both bosonic and fermionic, the exact…
We study the Ising spin chain with a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction focusing on the static and dynamic properties of the entanglement entropy, following a quantum quench. We show that the effects of the additional anisotropic interaction on the phase diagram and on the dynamics of the system are captured by the properties of the entanglement entropy. In particular, the model provides a way to study the quench dynamics in a system with an energy current. We consider quenches starting from an initial excited state of the Ising spin chain, and we analyze the effects of different initial condit…
We study the temporal evolution of the entanglement hamiltonian of an interval after a global quantum quenchin free lattice models in one spatial dimension. In a harmonic chain we explore a quench of the frequency parameter. In a chain of free fermions at half filling we consider the evolution of the ground state of a fully dimerised chain through the homogeneous hamiltonian. We focus on critical evolution hamiltonians. The temporal evolutions of the gaps in the entanglement spectrum are analysed. The entanglement hamiltonians in these models are characterised by matrices that provide also con…
We propose a charged falling particle in an AdS space as a holographic model of local charged quench generalizing model of arXiv:1302.5703. The quench is followed by evolving currents and inhomogeneous distribution of chemical potential. We derive the analytical formula describing the evolution of the entanglement entropy. At some characteristic time after the quench, we find that the entanglement shows a sharp dip. This effect is universal and independent of the dimension of the system. At finite temperature generalization of this model, we find that multiple dips and ramps appear.
We study the multipartite entanglement of a quantum many-body system undergoing a quantum quench. We quantify multipartite entanglement through the quantum Fisher information (QFI) density and we are able to express it after a quench in terms of a generalized response function. For pure state initial conditions and in the thermodynamic limit, we can express the QFI as the fluctuations of an observable computed in the so-called diagonal ensemble. We apply the formalism to the dynamics of a quantum Ising chain after a quench in the transverse field. In this model the asymptotic state is, in almo…
We extend the semiclassical picture for the spreading of entanglement and correlations to quantum quenches with several species of quasiparticles that have non-trivial pair correlations in momentum space. These pair correlations are, for example, relevant in inhomogeneous lattice models with a periodically-modulated Hamiltonian parameter. We provide explicit predictions for the spreading of the entanglement entropy in the space-time scaling limit. We also predict the time evolution of one- and two-point functions of the order parameter for quenches within the ordered phase. We test all our pre…
Understanding quantum entanglement in interacting higher-dimensional conformal field theories is a challenging task, as direct analytical calculations are often impossible to perform. With holographic entanglement entropy, calculations of entanglement entropy turn into a problem of finding extremal surfaces in a curved spacetime, which we tackle with a numerical finite-element approach. In this paper, we compute the entanglement entropy between two half-spaces resulting from a local quench, triggered by a local operator insertion in a CFT$_3$. We find that the growth of entanglement entropy at…
We study the effect of two simultaneous local quenches on the evolution of Loschmidt echo and entanglement entropy of a one dimensional transverse Ising model. In this work, one of the local quenches involves the connection of two spin-1/2 chains at a certain time and the other local quench corresponds to a sudden change in the magnitude of the transverse field at a given site in one of the spin chains. We numerically calculate the dynamics associated with the Loschmidt echo and the entanglement entropy as a result of such double quenches, and discuss various timescales involved in this proble…
We study the time evolution of the entanglement entropy after quantum quenches in Lifshitz free scalar theories, with the dynamical exponent $z>1$, by using the correlator method. For quantum quenches we consider two types of time-dependent mass functions: end-critical-protocol (ECP) and cis-critical-protocol (CCP). In both cases, at early times the entanglement entropy is independent of the subsystem size. After a critical time ($t_c$), the entanglement entropy starts depending on the subsystem size significantly. This critical time $t_c$ for $z = 1$ in the fast ECP and CCP has been explained…
The entanglement properties of quenched quantum systems have been studied for a decade, however results in dimensions other than $d=1$ are generally lacking. We remedy this by investigating the entanglement properties of bosonic critical systems in $d=3$, both numerically and analytically, comparing the free and the interacting critical quench of an $O(N)$ model. We find that the evolution of the entanglement entropy for these two systems is nearly identical, as expected from the "quasi-particle" picture. However, the low-lying entanglement spectrum is controlled by the different critical expo…
The presence of a global internal symmetry in a quantum many-body system is reflected in the fact that the entanglement between its subparts is endowed with an internal structure, namely it can be decomposed as sum of contributions associated to each symmetry sector. The symmetry resolution of entanglement measures provides a formidable tool to probe the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of quantum systems. Here, we study the time evolution of charge-imbalance-resolved negativity after a global quench in the context of free-fermion systems, complementing former works for the symmetry-resolved entang…
We unveil the stable $(d+1)$-dimensional topological structures underlying the quench dynamics for all the Altland-Zirnbauer classes in $d=1$ dimension, and propose to detect such dynamical topology from the time evolution of entanglement spectra. Focusing on systems in classes BDI and D, we find crossings in single-particle entanglement spectra for quantum quenches between different symmetry-protected topological phases. The entanglement-spectrum crossings are shown to be stable against symmetry-preserving disorder and faithfully reflect both $\mathbb{Z}$ (class BDI) and $\mathbb{Z}_2$ (class…
We present a quantitative semi-classical theory for the non-equilibrium dynamics of transverse Ising chains after quantum quenches, in particular sudden changes of the transverse field strength. We obtain accurate predictions for the quench dependent relaxation times and correlation lengths, and also about the recurrence times and quasiperiodicity of time dependent correlations in finite systems with open or periodic boundary conditions. We compare the quantiative predictions of our semi-classical theory (local magnetization, equal time bulk-bulk and surface-to-bulk correlations, and bulk auto…
In this work, we explore the effects of a quantum quench on the entanglement measures of a two-body coupled oscillator system having quartic interaction. We use the invariant operator method, under a perturbative framework, for computing the ground state of this system. We give the analytical expressions for the total and reduced density matrix of the system having non-Gaussian, quartic interaction terms. Using this reduced density matrix, we show the analytical calculation of two entanglement measures viz., Von Neumann entanglement entropy using replica trick and Renyi entanglement entropy. F…
We study the quenching dynamics of a one-dimensional spin-1/2 $XY$ model in a transverse field when the transverse field $h(=t/τ)$ is quenched repeatedly between $-\infty$ and $+\infty$. A single passage from $h \to - \infty$ to $h \to +\infty$ or the other way around is referred to as a half-period of quenching. For an even number of half-periods, the transverse field is brought back to the initial value of $-\infty$; in the case of an odd number of half-periods, the dynamics is stopped at $h \to +\infty$. The density of defects produced due to the non-adiabatic transitions is calculated by m…
We study the quantum dynamics of a one-dimensional spin-1/2 anisotropic XY model in a transverse field when the transverse field or the anisotropic interaction is quenched at a slow but uniform rate. The two quenching schemes are called transverse and anisotropic quenching respectively. Our emphasis in this paper is on the anisotropic quenching scheme and we compare the results with those of the other scheme. In the process of anisotropic quenching, the system crosses all the quantum critical lines of the phase diagram where the relaxation time diverges. The evolution is non-adiabatic in the t…
We theoretically study the response of a many-body localized system to a local quench from a quantum information perspective. We find that the local quench triggers entanglement growth throughout the whole system, giving rise to a logarithmic lightcone. This saturates the modified Lieb-Robinson bound for quantum information propagation in many-body localized systems previously conjectured based on the existence of local integrals of motion. In addition, near the localization-delocalization transition, we find that the final states after the local quench exhibit volume-law entanglement. We also…
We study analytically and numerically quench dynamics and defects formation in the quantum Ising model in the presence of a time-dependent transverse magnetic field. We generalize the Landau-Ziner formula to the case of non-adiabatic evolution of the quantum system. For a quasi-static magnetic field, with a slow dependence on time, our outcomes are similar to the results predicted by the Landau-Zener formula. However, a quench dynamics under a shock-wave load is more complicated. The final state of the system depends on the amplitude and pulse velocity, resulting in the mixture of ground and e…
We study the time dependence of the entanglement between two quantum wires after suddenly connecting them via tunneling through an impurity. The result at large times is given by the well known formula $S(t) \approx {1\over 3}\ln {t}$. We show that the intermediate time regime can be described by a universal cross-over formula $S=F(tT_K)$, where $T_K$ is the crossover (Kondo) temperature: the function $F$ describes the dynamical "healing" of the system at large times. We discuss how to obtain analytic information about $F$ in the case of an integrable quantum impurity problem using the massles…
We optimize a quantum walk of multiple fermions following a quench in a spin chain to generate near ideal resources for quantum networking. We first prove an useful theorem mapping the correlations evolved from specific quenches to the apparently unrelated problem of quantum state transfer between distinct spins. This mapping is then exploited to optimize the dynamics and produce large amounts of entanglement distributed in very special ways. Two applications are considered: the simultaneous generation of many Bell states between pairs of distant spins (maximal block entropy), or high entangle…
We report a study on the zero-temperature quantum discord as a measure of two-spin correlation of a transverse XY spin chain following a quench across a quantum critical point and investigate the behavior of mutual information, classical correlations and hence of discord in the final state as a function of the rate of quenching. We show that though discord vanishes in the limit of very slow as well as very fast quenching, it exhibits a peak for an intermediate value of the quenching rate. We show that though discord and also the mutual information exhibit a similar behavior with respect to the…
We study the magnetic field dependence of the entanglement entropy in quantum phase transition induced by a quench of the XX, XXX and the LMG model. The entropy for a block of $L$ spins with the rest follows a logarithmic scaling law where the block size $L$ is restricted due to the dependence of the prefactor on the quench time. Within this restricted region the entropy undergoes a renormalization group (RG) flow. From the RG flow equation we have analytically determined the magnetic field dependence of the entropy. The anisotropy parameter dependence of the entropy for the XY and the LMG mod…
We analyze the entanglement properties of the asymptotic steady state after a quench from free to hard-core bosons in one dimension. The Rényi and von Neumann entanglement entropies are found to be extensive, and the latter coincides with the thermodynamic entropy of the Generalized Gibbs Ensemble (GGE). Computing the spectrum of the two-point function, we provide exact analytical results both for the leading extensive parts and the subleading terms for the entropies as well as for the cumulants of the particle number fluctuations. We also compare the extensive part of the entanglement entropy…
Entanglement and entropy are key concepts standing at the foundations of quantum and statistical mechanics, respectively. In the last decade the study of quantum quenches revealed that these two concepts are intricately intertwined. Although the unitary time evolution ensuing from a pure initial state maintains the system globally at zero entropy, at long time after the quench local properties are captured by an appropriate statistical ensemble with non zero thermodynamic entropy, which can be interpreted as the entanglement accumulated during the dynamics. Therefore, understanding the post-qu…
We consider the stationary state properties of the reduced density matrix as well as spin-spin correlation functions after a sudden quantum quench of the magnetic field in the transverse field Ising chain. We demonstrate that stationary state properties are described by a generalized Gibbs ensemble. We discuss the approach to the stationary state at late times.
Dynamic correlation and response functions of classical and quantum systems in thermal equilibrium are connected by fluctuation-dissipation theorems, which allow an alternative definition of their (unique) temperature. Motivated by this fundamental property, we revisit the issue of thermalization of closed many-body quantum systems long after a sudden quench, focussing on the non-equilibrium dynamics of the Ising chain in a critical transverse field. We show the emergence of distinct observable-dependent effective temperatures, which rule out Gibbs thermalization in a strict sense but might st…
The time evolution of the entanglement entropy is a key concept to understand the structure of a non-equilibrium quantum state. In a large class of models, such evolution can be understood in terms of a semiclassical picture of moving quasiparticles spreading the entanglement throughout the system. However, it is not yet known how the entanglement splits between the sectors of an internal local symmetry of a quantum many-body system. Here, guided by the examples of conformal field theories and free-fermion chains, we show that the quasiparticle picture can be adapted to this goal, leading to a…
Conformal Field Theories (CFTs) have been used extensively to understand the physics of critical lattice models at equilibrium. However, the applicability of CFT calculations to the behavior of the lattice systems in the out-of-equilibrium setting is not entirely understood. In this work, we compare the CFT results of the evolution of the entanglement spectrum after a quantum quench with numerical calculations of the entanglement spectrum of the three-state Potts model using matrix product state simulations. Our results lead us to conjecture that CFT does not describe the entanglement spectrum…
We study quantum quenches in the transverse-field Ising model defined on different lattice geometries such as chains, two- and three-leg ladders, and two-dimensional square lattices. Starting from fully polarized initial states, we consider the dynamics of the transverse and the longitudinal magnetization for quenches to weak, strong, and critical values of the transverse field. To this end, we rely on an efficient combination of numerical linked cluster expansions (NLCEs) and a forward propagation of pure states in real time. As a main result, we demonstrate that NLCEs comprising solely recta…
