Fast, collision-free motion through unknown environments remains a challenging problem for robotic systems. In these situations, the robot's ability to reason about its future motion is often severely limited by sensor field of view (FOV). By contrast, biological systems routinely make decisions by taking into consideration what might exist beyond their FOV based on prior experience. In this paper, we present an approach for predicting occupancy map representations of sensor data for future robot motions using deep neural networks. We evaluate several deep network architectures, including purely generative and adversarial models. Testing on both simulated and real environments we demonstrated performance both qualitatively and quantitatively, with SSIM similarity measure up to 0.899. We showed that it is possible to make predictions about occupied space beyond the physical robot's FOV from simulated training data. In the future, this method will allow robots to navigate through unknown environments in a faster, safer manner.

In autonomous navigation of mobile robots, sensors suffer from massive occlusion in cluttered environments, leaving significant amount of space unknown during planning. In practice, treating the unknown space in optimistic or pessimistic ways both set limitations on planning performance, thus aggressiveness and safety cannot be satisfied at the same time. However, humans can infer the exact shape of the obstacles from only partial observation and generate non-conservative trajectories that avoid possible collisions in occluded space. Mimicking human behavior, in this paper, we propose a method…

State-of-the-art navigation methods leverage a spatial memory to generalize to new environments, but their occupancy maps are limited to capturing the geometric structures directly observed by the agent. We propose occupancy anticipation, where the agent uses its egocentric RGB-D observations to infer the occupancy state beyond the visible regions. In doing so, the agent builds its spatial awareness more rapidly, which facilitates efficient exploration and navigation in 3D environments. By exploiting context in both the egocentric views and top-down maps our model successfully anticipates a br…
Motion planning for safe autonomous driving requires learning how the environment around an ego-vehicle evolves with time. Ego-centric perception of driveable regions in a scene not only changes with the motion of actors in the environment, but also with the movement of the ego-vehicle itself. Self-supervised representations proposed for large-scale planning, such as ego-centric freespace, confound these two motions, making the representation difficult to use for downstream motion planners. In this paper, we use geometric occupancy as a natural alternative to view-dependent representations suc…
Predicting the possible future behaviors of vehicles that drive on shared roads is a crucial task for safe autonomous driving. Many existing approaches to this problem strive to distill all possible vehicle behaviors into a simplified set of high-level actions. However, these action categories do not suffice to describe the full range of maneuvers possible in the complex road networks we encounter in the real world. To combat this deficiency, we propose a new method that leverages the mapped road topology to reason over possible goals and predict the future spatial occupancy of dynamic road ac…
Detection and segmentation of moving obstacles, along with prediction of the future occupancy states of the local environment, are essential for autonomous vehicles to proactively make safe and informed decisions. In this paper, we propose a framework that integrates the two capabilities together using deep neural network architectures. Our method first detects and segments moving objects in the scene, and uses this information to predict the spatiotemporal evolution of the environment around autonomous vehicles. To address the problem of direct integration of both static-dynamic object segmen…

We consider the problems of exploration and point-goal navigation in previously unseen environments, where the spatial complexity of indoor scenes and partial observability constitute these tasks challenging. We argue that learning occupancy priors over indoor maps provides significant advantages towards addressing these problems. To this end, we present a novel planning framework that first learns to generate occupancy maps beyond the field-of-view of the agent, and second leverages the model uncertainty over the generated areas to formulate path selection policies for each task of interest. …

In this paper, we address the important problem in self-driving of forecasting multi-pedestrian motion and their shared scene occupancy map, critical for safe navigation. Our contributions are two-fold. First, we advocate for predicting both the individual motions as well as the scene occupancy map in order to effectively deal with missing detections caused by postprocessing, e.g., confidence thresholding and non-maximum suppression. Second, we propose a Scene-Actor Graph Neural Network (SA-GNN) which preserves the relative spatial information of pedestrians via 2D convolution, and captures th…

We exploit the complementary strengths of vision and proprioception to develop a point-goal navigation system for legged robots, called VP-Nav. Legged systems are capable of traversing more complex terrain than wheeled robots, but to fully utilize this capability, we need a high-level path planner in the navigation system to be aware of the walking capabilities of the low-level locomotion policy in varying environments. We achieve this by using proprioceptive feedback to ensure the safety of the planned path by sensing unexpected obstacles like glass walls, terrain properties like slipperiness…

One of the key challenges in high speed off road navigation on ground vehicles is that the kinodynamics of the vehicle terrain interaction can differ dramatically depending on the terrain. Previous approaches to addressing this challenge have considered learning an inverse kinodynamics (IKD) model, conditioned on inertial information of the vehicle to sense the kinodynamic interactions. In this paper, we hypothesize that to enable accurate high-speed off-road navigation using a learned IKD model, in addition to inertial information from the past, one must also anticipate the kinodynamic intera…

We train a variety of Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) based architectures on the OGM sequences from the KITTI dataset. The results demonstrate significant improvement of the prediction accuracy using our proposed difference learning method, incorporating motion relate…

Line scanning cameras, which capture only a single line of pixels, have been increasingly used in ground based mobile or robotic platforms. In applications where it is advantageous to directly georeference the camera data to world coordinates, an accurate estimate of the camera's 6D pose is required. This paper focuses on the common case where a mobile platform is equipped with a rigidly mounted line scanning camera, whose pose is unknown, and a navigation system providing vehicle body pose estimates. We propose a novel method that estimates the camera's pose relative to the navigation system.…

Reliably predicting future occupancy of highly dynamic urban environments is an important precursor for safe autonomous navigation. Common challenges in the prediction include forecasting the relative position of other vehicles, modelling the dynamics of vehicles subjected to different traffic conditions, and vanishing surrounding objects. To tackle these challenges, we propose a spatio-temporal prediction network pipeline that takes the past information from the environment and semantic labels separately for generating future occupancy predictions. Compared to the current SOTA, our approach p…

We have developed an algorithm to generate a complete map of the traversable region for a personal assistant robot using monocular vision only. Using multiple taken by a simple webcam, obstacle detection and avoidance algorithms have been developed. Simple Linear Iterative Clustering (SLIC) has been used for segmentation to reduce the memory and computation cost. A simple mapping technique using inverse perspective mapping and occupancy grids, which is robust, and supports very fast updates has been used to create the map for indoor navigation.
Motion prediction of vehicles is critical but challenging due to the uncertainties in complex environments and the limited visibility caused by occlusions and limited sensor ranges. In this paper, we study a new task, safety-aware motion prediction with unseen vehicles for autonomous driving. Unlike the existing trajectory prediction task for seen vehicles, we aim at predicting an occupancy map that indicates the earliest time when each location can be occupied by either seen and unseen vehicles. The ability to predict unseen vehicles is critical for safety in autonomous driving. To tackle thi…

We develop an online training algorithm that maintains a very sparse set of support vectors to represent obstacle boundaries in configuration space. We also derive conditions that allow complete (without sampling) collision-checking for piecewise-linear and piecewise-polynomial robot trajectories. We demonstrate the…

Safe and high-speed navigation is a key enabling capability for real world deployment of robotic systems. A significant limitation of existing approaches is the computational bottleneck associated with explicit mapping and the limited field of view (FOV) of existing sensor technologies. In this paper, we study algorithmic approaches that allow the robot to predict spaces extending beyond the sensor horizon for robust planning at high speeds. We accomplish this using a generative neural network trained from real-world data without requiring human annotated labels. Further, we extend our existin…

We exploit static information, such as the mean occupation concerning the time of day, to learn the specific charging station patterns. We supplement such static data with dynamic information reflecting the preceding charging station occupation and temporal information such as daytime and weekday. Our…

The representation parameters are optimized by d…
