This paper focuses on real-time occupancy mapping and collision checking onboard an autonomous robot navigating in an unknown environment. We propose a new map representation, in which occupied and free space are separated by the decision boundary of a kernel perceptron classifier. We develop an online training algorithm that maintains a very sparse set of support vectors to represent obstacle boundaries in configuration space. We also derive conditions that allow complete (without sampling) collision-checking for piecewise-linear and piecewise-polynomial robot trajectories. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our mapping and collision checking algorithms for autonomous navigation of an Ackermann-drive robot in unknown environments.

This paper presents a Deep Reinforcement Learning based navigation approach in which we define the occupancy observations as heuristic evaluations of motion primitives, rather than using raw sensor data. Our method enables fast mapping of the occupancy data, generated by multi-sensor fusion, into trajectory values in 3D workspace. The computationally efficient trajectory evaluation allows dense sampling of the action space. We utilize our occupancy observations in different data structures to analyze their effects on both training process and navigation performance. We train and test our metho…
This paper focuses on online occupancy mapping and real-time collision checking onboard an autonomous robot navigating in a large unknown environment. Commonly used voxel and octree map representations can be easily maintained in a small environment but have increasing memory requirements as the environment grows. We propose a fundamentally different approach for occupancy mapping, in which the boundary between occupied and free space is viewed as the decision boundary of a machine learning classifier. This work generalizes a kernel perceptron model which maintains a very sparse set of support…

Safe and high-speed navigation is a key enabling capability for real world deployment of robotic systems. A significant limitation of existing approaches is the computational bottleneck associated with explicit mapping and the limited field of view (FOV) of existing sensor technologies. In this paper, we study algorithmic approaches that allow the robot to predict spaces extending beyond the sensor horizon for robust planning at high speeds. We accomplish this using a generative neural network trained from real-world data without requiring human annotated labels. Further, we extend our existin…

In autonomous navigation of mobile robots, sensors suffer from massive occlusion in cluttered environments, leaving significant amount of space unknown during planning. In practice, treating the unknown space in optimistic or pessimistic ways both set limitations on planning performance, thus aggressiveness and safety cannot be satisfied at the same time. However, humans can infer the exact shape of the obstacles from only partial observation and generate non-conservative trajectories that avoid possible collisions in occluded space. Mimicking human behavior, in this paper, we propose a method…

In recent years, Deep Reinforcement Learning emerged as a promising approach for autonomous navigation of ground vehicles and has been utilized in various areas of navigation such as cruise control, lane changing, or obstacle avoidance. However, most research works either focus on providing an end-to-end solution training the whole system using Deep Reinforcement Learning or focus on one specific aspect such as local motion planning. This however, comes along with a number of problems such as catastrophic forgetfulness, inefficient navigation behavior, and non-optimal synchronization between d…

Imitation learning holds the promise to address challenging robotic tasks such as autonomous navigation. To minimize human involvement and avoid manual labeling of data in the robotic autonomous navigation with imitation learning, this paper proposes a novel semi-supervised imitation learning solution based on a multi-sensory design. This solution includes a suboptimal sensor policy based on sensor fusion to automatic…

Urban environments offer a challenging scenario for autonomous driving. Globally localizing information, such as a GPS signal, can be unreliable due to signal shadowing and multipath errors. Detailed a priori maps of the environment with sufficient information for autonomous navigation typically require driving the area multiple times to collect large amounts of data, substantial post-processing on that data to obtain the map, and then maintaining updates on the map as the environment changes. This dissertation addresses the issue of autonomous driving in an urban environment by investigating …
In this work, we propose a new learning approach for autonomous navigation and landing of an Unmanned-Aerial-Vehicle (UAV). We develop a multimodal fusion of deep neural architectures for visual-inertial odometry. We train the model in an end-to-end fashion to estimate the current vehicle pose from streams of visual and inertial measurements. We first evaluate the accuracy of our estimation by comparing the prediction of the model to traditional algorithms on the publicly available EuRoC MAV dataset. The results illustrate a $25 \%$ improvement in estimation accuracy over the baseline. Finally…
Autonomous navigation has become an increasingly popular machine learning application. Recent advances in deep learning have also resulted in great improvements to autonomous navigation. However, prior outdoor autonomous navigation depends on various expensive sensors or large amounts of real labeled data which is difficult to acquire and sometimes erroneous. The objective of this study is to train an autonomous navigation model that uses a simulator (instead of real labeled data) and an inexpensive monocular camera. In order to exploit the simulator satisfactorily, our proposed method is base…

While effective navigation in large, crowded environments is essential for an autonomous robot, preliminary testing of algorithms to support it requires simulation across a broad range of crowd scenarios. Most available simulation tools provide either realistic crowds without robots or realistic robots without realistic crowds. This paper introduces MengeROS, a 2-D simulator that realistically integrates multiple robots and crowds. MengeROS provides a broad range of settings in which to test the capabilities and performance of navigation algorithms designed for large crowded environments.

However, its data complexity, especially around generalization to unseen environments, is high. We introduce a novel image-based autonomous navigation technique that leverages in policy structure using the Riemannian Motion Policy (RMP) framework for deep learning of vehicular control. We design a deep neural network to predict control point RMPs of the vehicle from visual images, from which the optimal control commands can be computed analytically. We sh…

In this work, we propose a multimodal fusion approach to address the problem of autonomous navigation in complex environments such as collapsed cites, or natural caves. We first simulate the…

A key challenge in fast ground robot navigation in 3D terrain is balancing robot speed and safety. Recent work has shown that 2.5D maps (2D representations with additional 3D information) are ideal for real-time safe and fast planning. However, the prevalent approach of generating 2D occupancy grids through raytracing makes the generated map unsafe to plan in, due to inaccurate representation of unknown space. Additionally, existing planners such as MPPI do not consider speeds in known free and unknown space separately, leading to slower overall plans. The RAMP pipeline proposed here solves th…

Other learning-based approaches fail to address the naturalness aspect from the perspective of collective formation behaviors. We present an autonomous navigation system capable of operating in dense crowds and utilizing …

Fully or partial autonomous marine vessels are actively being developed by many industry actors. In many cases, the autonomous vessels will be operating close to shore, and within range of a Remote Control Center (RCC). Close to shore operation requires that the autonomous vessel is able to navigate in close proximity to other autonomous or manned vessels, and possibly in confined waters, while obeying the COLREGs on equal terms as any other vessel at sea. In confined waters however, certain COLREGs rules apply, which might alter the expected actions (give-way or stand-on), depending on the ma…

This paper proposes a novel navigation framework utilizing an enhanced version of Trajopt for fast 3D path-optimization planning for AUVs. Machine learning approaches have recently enabled autonomous navigation for mobile robots in a data-driven manner. Since most existing learning-based navigation systems are trained with data generated in artificially created training environments, during real-world deployment at scale, it is inevitable that robots will encounter unseen scenarios, which are out of the training distribution and therefore lead to poor real-world performance. On the other hand, directly training in the real world is generally unsafe and inefficient. To address this issue, we introduce Self-supervised Environment S…
