We present a general framework for constructing trans-scale \emph{discrete Boltzmann models} (DBMs) for high-speed compressible flows ranging from continuum to transition regime. This is achieved by designing a higher-order discrete equilibrium distribution function which satisfies additional nonhydrodynamic kinetic moments. In order to characterize the \emph{% thermodynamic non-equilibrium} (TNE) effects and estimate the condition under which the DBMs at various levels should be used, two novel measures are presented: (i) the relative TNE strength, describing the relative strength of the ($N+1$)-th order TNE effects to the $N$-th order one; (ii) the TNE discrepancy between DBM simulation and relevant theoretical analysis. Whether or not the higher-order TNE effects should be taken into account in the modeling and which level of DBM should be adopted, is best described by the relative TNE intensity and/or the discrepancy, rather than by the value of the Knudsen number. As a model example, a two-dimensional DBM with $26$ discrete velocities at Burnett level is formulated, verified, and validated.
Off-lattice Boltzmann methods increase the flexibility and applicability of lattice Boltzmann methods by decoupling the discretizations of time, space, and particle velocities. However, the velocity sets that are mostly used in off-lattice Boltzmann simulations were originally tailored to on-lattice Boltzmann methods. In this contribution, we show how the accuracy and efficiency of weakly and fully compressible semi-Lagrangian off-lattice Boltzmann simulations is increased by velocity sets derived from cubature rules, i.e. multivariate quadratures, which have not been produced by the Gauss-pro…
We present an energy conserving lattice Boltzmann model based on a crystallographic lattice for simulation of weakly compressible flows. The theoretical requirements and the methodology to construct such a model are discussed. We demonstrate that the model recovers the isentropic sound speed in addition to the effects of viscous heating and heat flux dynamics. Several test cases for acoustics, thermal and thermoacoustic flows are simulated to show the accuracy of the proposed model.
The discretized equilibrium distributions of the lattice Boltzmann method are presented by using the coefficients of the Lagrange interpolating polynomials that pass through the points related to discrete velocities and using moments of the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution. The ranges of flow velocity and temperature providing positive valued distributions vary with regulating discrete velocities as parameters. New isothermal and thermal compressible models are proposed for flows of the level of the isothermal and thermal compressible Navier-Stokes equations. Thermal compressible shock tube flow…
A decoupled scheme based on the Hermite expansion to construct lattice Boltzmann models for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with arbitrary specific heat ratio is proposed. The local equilibrium distribution function including the rotational velocity of particle is decoupled into two parts, i.e. the local equilibrium distribution function of the translational velocity of particle and that of the rotational velocity of particle. From these two local equilibrium functions, two lattice Boltzmann models are derived via the Hermite expansion, namely one is in relation to the translational v…
A two-fluid Discrete Boltzmann Model(DBM) for compressible flows based on Ellipsoidal Statistical Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook(ES-BGK) is presented. The model has flexible Prandtl number or specific heat ratio. Mathematically, the model is composed of two coupled Discrete Boltzmann Equations(DBE). Each DBE describes one component of the fluid. Physically, the model is equivalent to a macroscopic fluid model based on Navier-Stokes(NS) equations, and supplemented by a coarse-grained model for thermodynamic non-equilibrium behaviors. To obtain a flexible Prandtl number, a coefficient is introduced in th…
A D2Q9 Hybrid Lattice Boltzmann Method (HLBM) is proposed for the simulation of both compressible subsonic and supersonic flows. This HLBM is an extension of the model of Feng et al: [12], which has been found, via different test cases, to be unstable for supersonic regimes. The improvements consist of: (1) a new discretization of the lattice closure correction term making possible to properly simulate supersonic flows, (2) a corrected viscous stress tensor that takes into account polyatomic gases, and (3) a novel discretization of the viscous heat production term fitting with the regularized …
This work thoroughly investigates a semi-Lagrangian lattice Boltzmann (SLLBM) solver for compressible flows. In contrast to other LBM for compressible flows, the vertices are organized in cells, and interpolation polynomials up to fourth order are used to attain the off-vertex distribution function values. Differing from the recently introduced Particles on Demand (PoD) method, the method operates in a static, non-moving reference frame. Yet the SLLBM in the present formulation grants supersonic flows and exhibits a high degree of Galilean invariance. The SLLBM solver allows for an independent…
We present a two-way coupled fluid-structure interaction scheme for rigid bodies using a two-population lattice Boltzmann formulation for compressible flows. Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian formulation of the discrete Boltzmann equation on body-fitted meshes is used in a combination with polynomial blending functions. The blending function approach localizes mesh deformation and allows treating multiple moving bodies with a minimal computational overhead. We validate the model with several test cases of vortex induced vibrations of single and tandem cylinders and show that it can accurately desc…
A new lattice Boltzmann model for multicomponent ideal gas mixtures is presented. The model development consists of two parts. First, a new kinetic model for Stefan- Maxwell diffusion amongst the species is proposed and realized as a lattice Boltzmann equation on the standard discrete velocity set. Second, a compressible lattice Boltzmann model for the momentum and energy of the mixture is established. Both parts are consistently coupled through mixture composition, momentum, pressure, energy and enthalpy whereby a passive scalar advection-diffusion coupling is obviated, unlike in previous app…
An original spectral study of the compressible hybrid lattice Boltzmann method (HLBM) on standard lattice is proposed. In this framework, the mass and momentum equations are addressed using the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM), while finite difference (FD) schemes solve an energy equation. Both systems are coupled with each other thanks to an ideal gas equation of state. This work aims at answering some questions regarding the numerical stability of such models, which strongly depends on the choice of numerical parameters. To this extent, several one- and two-dimensional HLBM classes based on di…
To kinetically model implosion and explosion related phenomena, we present a theoretical framework for constructing Discrete Boltzmann Model(DBM) with spherical symmetry in spherical coordinates. To this aim, a key technique is to use \emph{local} Cartesian coordinates to describe the particle velocity in the kinetic model. Thus, the geometric effects, like the divergence and convergence, are described as a \textquotedblleft force term\textquotedblright. To better access the nonequilibrium behavior, even though the corresponding hydrodynamic model is one-dimensional, the DBM uses a Discrete Ve…
We propose a two-population lattice Boltzmann model on standard lattices for the simulation of compressible flows. The model is fully on-lattice and uses the single relaxation time Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook kinetic equations along with appropriate correction terms to recover the Navier-Stokes-Fourier equations. The accuracy and performance of the model are analyzed through simulations of compressible benchmark cases including Sod shock tube, sound generation in shock-vortex interaction and compressible decaying turbulence in a box with eddy shocklets. It is demonstrated that the present model prov…
Mathematically, the typical difference of Discrete Boltzmann Model (DBM) from the traditional hydrodynamic one is that the Navier-Stokes (NS) equations are replaced by a discrete Boltzmann equation. But physically, this replacement has a significant gain: a DBM is roughly equivalent to a hydrodynamic model supplemented by a coarse-grained model of the Thermodynamic Non-Equilibrium (TNE) effects, where the hydrodynamic model can be and can also beyond the NS. Via the DBM, it is convenient to perform simulations on systems with flexible Knudsen number. The observations on TNE are being obtaining…
In this work we have obtained a higher-derivative Lagrangian for a charged fluid coupled with the electromagnetic fluid and the Dirac's constraints analysis was discussed. A set of first-class constraints fixed by noncovariant gauge condition was obtained. The path integral formalism was used to obtain the partition function for the corresponding higher-derivative Hamiltonian and the Faddeev-Popov ansatz was used to construct an effective Lagrangian. Through the partition function, a Stefan-Boltzmann type law was obtained.
Turbulent compressible flows are traditionally simulated using explicit time integrators applied to discretized versions of the Navier-Stokes equations. However, the associated Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy condition severely restricts the maximum time step size. Exploiting the Lagrangian nature of the Boltzmann equation's material derivative, we now introduce a feasible three-dimensional semi-Lagrangian lattice Boltzmann method (SLLBM), which circumvents this restriction. While many lattice Boltzmann methods for compressible flows were restricted to two dimensions due to the enormous number of disc…
We present a series of three-dimensional discrete Boltzmann (DB) models for compressible flows in and out of equilibrium. The key formulating technique is the construction of discrete equilibrium distribution function through inversely solving the kinetic moment relations that it satisfies. The crucial physical requirement is that all the used kinetic moment relations must be consistent with the non-equilibrium statistical mechanics. The necessity of such a kinetic model is that, with increasing the complexity of flows, the dynamical characterization of non-equilibrium state and the understand…
Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) instability widely exists in nature and engineering fields. How to better understand the physical mechanism of RT instability is of great theoretical significance and practical value. At present, abundant results of RT instability have been obtained by traditional macroscopic methods. However, research on the thermodynamic non-equilibrium (TNE) effects in the process of system evolution is relatively scarce. In this paper, the discrete Boltzmann method based on non-equilibrium statistical physics is utilized to study the effects of the specific heat ratio on compressible R…
We present a novel approach to kinetic theory modeling enabling the simulation of a generic, real gas presented by its corresponding equation of state. The model is based on mass, momentum and energy conservation, and unlike the lattice Boltzmann models enables simulations of fluids exhibiting a liquid-vapor phase transition in both super- and subcritical states. In this new kinetic theory,an arbitrary equation of state can be introduced through rescaling the discrete particle velocities.Different benchmarks associated with real-gas thermodynamics illustrate that the proposed scheme can handle…

A double-distribution-function based lattice Boltzmann method (DDF-LBM) is proposed for the simulation of polyatomic gases in the supersonic regime. The model relies on an extended equilibrium state that is constructed to reproduce the first 13 moments of the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution exactly. This extends the validity of the standard 5-constraint (mass, momentum and energy) approach and leads to the correct simulation of thermal, compressible flows with only 39 discrete velocities in 3D. The stability of this BGK-LBM is reinforced by relying on Knudsen-number-dependent relaxation times t…
A multiple-relaxation-time discrete Boltzmann model (DBM) is proposed for multicomponent mixtures, where compressible, hydrodynamic, and thermodynamic nonequilibrium effects are taken into account. It allows the specific heat ratio and the Prandtl number to be adjustable, and is suitable for both low and high speed fluid flows. From the physical side, besides being consistent with the multicomponent Navier-Stokes equations, Fick's law and Stefan-Maxwell diffusion equation in the hydrodynamic limit, the DBM provides more kinetic information about the nonequilibrium effects. The physical capabil…

The non-equilibrium high-speed compressible flows present wealthy applications in engineering and science. With the deepening of Thermodynamic Non-Equilibrium (TNE), higher-order non-conserved kinetic moments of the distribution function are needed to capture the main feature of the flow state and evolution process. Based on the ellipsoidal statistical Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook model, Discrete Boltzmann Models (DBMs) that consider various orders (from the first up to the sixth order) of TNE effects are developed to study flows in various depths of TNE. Specifically, at first, two types of one-dime…
A new lattice Boltzmann model for reactive ideal gas mixtures is presented. The model is an extension to reactive flows of the recently proposed multi-component lattice Boltzmann model for compressible ideal gas mixtures with Stefan-Maxwell diffusion for species interaction. First, the kinetic model for the Stefan--Maxwell diffusion is enhanced to accommodate a source term accounting the change of the mixture composition due to chemical reaction. Second, by including the heat of formation in the energy equation, the thermodynamic consistency of the underlying compressible lattice Boltzmann mod…
We propose a novel multi-domain grid refinement technique with extensions to entropic incompressible, thermal and compressible lattice Boltzmann models. Its validity and accuracy are accessed by comparison to available direct numerical simulation and experiment for the simulation of isothermal, thermal and viscous supersonic flow. In particular, we investigate the advantages of grid refinement for the set-ups of turbulent channel flow, flow past a sphere, Rayleigh-Benard convection as well as the supersonic flow around an airfoil. Special attention is payed to analyzing the adaptive features o…
Particles on Demand formulation of kinetic theory [B. Dorschner, F. Bösch and I. V. Karlin, {\it Phys. Rev. Lett.} {\bf 121}, 130602 (2018)] is used to simulate a variety of compressible flows with strong discontinuities in density, pressure and velocity. Two modifications are applied to the original formulation of the Particles on Demand method. First, a regularization by Grad's projection of particles populations is combined with the reference frame transformations in order to enhance stability and accuracy. Second, a finite-volume scheme is implemented which allows tight control of mass, mo…
In this paper, a thermal cascaded lattice Boltzmann method (TCLBM) is developed in combination with the double-distribution-function (DDF) approach. A density distribution function relaxed by the cascaded scheme is employed to solve the flow field, and a total energy distribution function relaxed by the BGK scheme is used to solve temperature field, where two distribution functions are coupled naturally. The forcing terms are incorporated by means of central moments, which is consistent with the previous force scheme [Premnath \emph{et al.}, Phys. Rev. E \textbf{80}, 036702 (2009)] but the der…
The thermal lattice Boltzmann flux solver (TLBFS) has been proposed to overcome the drawbacks of the thermal lattice Boltzmann models. However, as a weakly compressible model, its mechanism of good numerical stability for high Rayleigh number thermal flows is still unclear. To reveal the mechanism, the present paper firstly derives the macroscopic equations of TLBFS (MEs-TLBFS) with actual numerical dissipation terms by approximating its computational process. By solving MEs-TLBFS with the finite volume method, the reconstructed TLBFS (RTLBFS) is proposed. Detailed analyses prove that these ac…
The lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) has gained increasing popularity in incompressible viscous flow simulations, but it uses many more variables than necessary. This defect was overcome by a recent approach that solves the more actual macroscopic equations obtained through Taylor series expansion analysis of the lattice Boltzmann equations [Lu et al., J. Comp. Phys., 415, 109546 (2020)]. The key is to keep some small additional terms (SATs) to stabilize the numerical solution of the weakly compressible Navier-Stokes equations. However, there are many SATs that complicate the implementation of t…
