We study nematic liquid crystalline films within the framework of the Landau-de Gennes theory in the limit when both the thickness of the film and the nematic correlation length are vanishingly small compared to the lateral extent of the film. We prove $Γ$-convergence for a sequence of singularly perturbed functionals with a potential vanishing on a high-dimensional set and a Dirichlet condition imposed on admissible functions. This then allows us to prove the existence of local minimizers of the Landau-de Gennes energy in the spirit of a theorem due to Kohn and Sternberg despite the lack of compactness arising from the high-dimensional structure of the wells. The limiting energy consists of leading order perimeter terms, similar to Allen-Cahn models, and lower order terms arising from vortex structures reminiscent of Ginzburg-Landau models.
We study uniaxial energy-minimizers within the Landau-de Gennes theory for nematic liquid crystals on a three-dimensional spherical droplet subject to homeotropic boundary conditions. We work in the low-temperature regime and show that uniaxial energy-minimizers necessarily have the structure of the well-studied radial-hedgehog solution in the low-temperature limit. An immediate consequence of this result is that Landau-de Gennes energy minimizers cannot be purely uniaxial for sufficiently low temperatures.
In the Landau-de Gennes theoretical framework of a $Q -tensor description of nematic liquid crystals, we consider a radial hedgehog defect with strong anchoring conditions in a ball $B \subset \mathbb{R}^3$ . We show that the scalar order parameter is monotonic, and we prove uniqueness of the minimizing hedgehog below the spinodal temperature $T^\ast$ .
We investigate the asymptotic behaviour of a correlation function associated with a nematic liquid crystal system undergoing an isotropic-nematic phase transition following an instantaneous change of temperature. Within the setting of Landau-de Gennes theory, we confirm a hypothesis in the condensed matter physics literature on the average self-similar behaviour of the correlation function in the asymptotic regime at time infinity. In the final sections, we comment on other possible scaling behaviour of the correlation function.
We study global minimizers of a continuum Landau-De Gennes energy functional for nematic liquid crystals, in three-dimensional domains, subject to uniaxial boundary conditions. We analyze the physically relevant limit of small elastic constant and show that global minimizers converge strongly, in $W^{1,2}$, to a global minimizer predicted by the Oseen-Frank theory for uniaxial nematic liquid crystals with constant order parameter. Moreover, the convergence is uniform in the interior of the domain, away from the singularities of the limiting Oseen-Frank global minimizer. We obtain results on th…
We study the asymptotic behavior of the minimisers of the Landau-de Gennes model for nematic liquid crystals in a two-dimensional domain in the regime of small elastic constant. At leading order in the elasticity constant, the minimum-energy configurations can be described by the simpler Oseen-Frank theory. Using a refined notion of $Γ$-development we recover Landau-de Gennes corrections to the Oseen-Frank energy. We provide an explicit characterisation of minimizing $Q$-tensors at this order in terms of optimal Oseen-Frank directors and observe the emerging biaxiality. We apply our results to…
We use the method of $Γ$-convergence to study the behavior of the Landau-de Gennes model for a nematic liquid crystalline film in the limit of vanishing thickness. In this asymptotic regime, surface energy plays a greater role and we take particular care in understanding its influence on the structure of the minimizers of the derived two-dimensional energy. We assume general weak anchoring conditions on the top and the bottom surfaces of the film and the strong Dirichlet boundary conditions on the lateral boundary of the film. The constants in the weak anchoring conditions are chosen so as to …
The Landau-de Gennes energy in nematic liquid crystals depends on four elastic constants $L_1$, $L_2$, $L_3$, $L_4$. In the case of $L_4\neq 0$, Ball and Majumdar (Mol. Cryst. Liq. Cryst., 2010) found an example that the original Landau-de Gennes energy functional in physics does not satisfy a coercivity condition, which causes a problem in mathematics to establish existence of energy minimizers. At first, we introduce a new Landau-de Gennes energy density with $L_4\neq 0$, which is equivalent to the original Landau-de Gennes density for uniaxial tensors and satisfies the coercivity condition …
We study uniaxial energy minimizers within the Landau-de Gennes theory for nematic liquid crystals, subject to dirichlet boundary conditions. Topological defects in such minimizers correspond to the zeros of the corresponding equilibrium field. We consider two-dimensional and three-dimensional domains separately and study the correspondence between Landau-de Gennes theory and Ginzburg-Landau theory for superconductors. We obtain results for the location and dimensionality of the defect set, the minimizer profile near the defect set and study the qualitative properties of uniaxial energy minimi…
We construct an order reconstruction (OR)-type Landau-de Gennes critical point on a square domain of edge length $λ$, motivated by the well order reconstruction solution numerically reported by Kralj and Majumdar. The OR critical point is distinguished by an uniaxial cross with negative scalar order parameter along the square diagonals. The OR critical point is defined in terms of a saddle-type critical point of an associated scalar variational problem. The OR-type critical point is globally stable for small $λ$ and undergoes a supercritical pitchfork bifurcation in the associated scalar varia…
We consider a Landau-de Gennes model for a connected cubic lattice scaffold in a nematic host, in a dilute regime. We analyse the homogenised limit for both cases in which the lattice of embedded particles presents or not cubic symmetry and then we compute the free effective energy of the composite material. In the cubic symmetry case, we impose different types of surface anchoring energy densities, such as quartic, Rapini-Papoular or more general versions, and, in this case, we show that we can tune any coefficient from the corresponding bulk potential, especially the phase transition tempera…
We study the stability of the radial-hedgehog solution on a three-dimensional (3D) spherical shell with radial boundary conditions, within the Landau-de Gennes theory for nematic liquid crystals. We show that the radial-hedgehog solution has no zeroes for a sufficiently narrow shell, for all temperatures below the nematic supercooling temperature. We prove that the radial-hedgehog solution is the unique global Landau-de Gennes energy minimizer for a sufficiently narrow 3D spherical shell, for all temperatures below the nematic supercooling temperature. We provide explicit geometry-dependent cr…
We use the method of $Γ$-convergence to study the behavior of the Landau-de Gennes model for a nematic liquid crystalline film attached to a general fixed surface in the limit of vanishing thickness. This paper generalizes the approach that we used previously to study a similar problem for a planar surface. Since the anchoring energy dominates when the thickness of the film is small, it is essential to understand its influence on the structure of the minimizers of the limiting energy. In particular, the anchoring energy dictates the class of admissible competitors and the structure of the limi…
In this article we study the low-temperature limit of a Landau-de Gennes theory. Within all S2-valued R-axially symmetric maps (see Definition 1.1), the limiting energy functional has at least two distinct energy minimizers. One minimizer has biaxial torus structure, while another minimizer has split-core segment structure on the z-axis.
We consider the Landau-de Gennes variational problem on a bound\-ed, two dimensional domain, subject to Dirichlet smooth boundary conditions. We prove that minimizers are maximally biaxial near the singularities, that is, their biaxiality parameter reaches the maximum value $1$. Moreover, we discuss the convergence of minimizers in the vanishing elastic constant limit. Our asymptotic analysis is performed in a general setting, which recovers the Landau-de Gennes problem as a specific case.
Starting from Beris-Edwards system for the liquid crystal, we present a rigorous derivation of Ericksen-Leslie system with general Ericksen stress and Leslie stress by using the Hilbert expansion method.
We investigate stability properties of the radially symmetric solution corresponding to the vortex defect (so called "melting hedgehog") in the framework of the Landau - de Gennes model of nematic liquid crystals. We prove local stability of the melting hedgehog under arbitrary $Q$-tensor valued perturbations in the temperature regime near the critical supercooling temperature. As a consequence of our method, we also rediscover the loss of stability of the vortex defect in the deep nematic regime.
In this paper we revisit a singular bulk potential in the Landau-de Gennes free energy that describes nematic liquid crystal configurations in the framework of the Q-tensor order parameter. This singular potential, called Ball-Majumdar potential, is introduced in [3], and is considered as a natural enforcement of a physical constraint on the eigenvalues of symmetric, traceless Q-tensors. Specifically, we establish blowup rates of both this singular potential and its gradient as Q approaches its physical boundary.
In this paper, we prove the stability of half-degree point defect profiles in $\mathbb{R}^2$ for the nematic liquid crystal within Landau-de Gennes model.
We consider the two-dimensional Landau-de Gennes energy with several elastic constants, subject to general $k$-radially symmetric boundary conditions. We show that for generic elastic constants the critical points consistent with the symmetry of the boundary conditions exist only in the case $k=2$. In this case we identify three types of radial profiles: with two, three of full five components and numerically investigate their minimality and stability depending on suitable parameters. We also numerically study the stability properties of the critical points of the Landau-de Gennes energy and c…
We study a class of Landau-de Gennes energy functionals in the asymptotic regime of small elastic constant $L>0$. We revisit and sharpen the results in [18] on the convergence to the limit Oseen-Frank functional. We examine how the Landau-de Gennes global minimizers are approximated by the Oseen-Frank ones by determining the first order term in their asymptotic expansion as $L\to 0$. We identify the appropriate functional setting in which the asymptotic expansion holds, the sharp rate of convergence to the limit and determine the equation for the first order term. We find that the equation has…
In the Landau-de Gennes theory on nematic liquid crystals, the well-known Landau-de Gennes energy depends on four elastic constants; $L_1$, $L_2$, $L_3$, $L_4$. For the general case of $L_4\neq 0$, Ball-Majumdar \cite {BM} found an example that the Landau-de Gennes energy functional from physics literature \cite{MN} does not satisfy a coercivity condition, which causes a problem in mathematics to establish existence of energy minimizers. In order to solve this problem, we observe that the original third order term on $L_4$, proposed by Schiele and Trimper \cite{ST} in physics, is a linear comb…
We discuss a 3D model describing the time evolution of nematic liquid crystals in the framework of Landau-de Gennes theory, where the natural physical constraints are enforced by a singular free energy bulk potential proposed by J.M. Ball and A. Majumdar. The thermal effects are present through the component of the free energy that accounts for intermolecular interactions. The model is consistent with the general principle of thermodynamics and mathematically tractable. We identify the a priori estimates for the associated system of evolutionary partial differential equations and construct glo…
We study tensor-valued minimizers of the Landau-de Gennes energy functional on a simply-connected planar domain $Ω$ with non-contractible boundary data. Here the tensorial field represents the second moment of a local orientational distribution of rod-like molecules of a nematic liquid crystal. Under the assumption that the energy depends on a single parameter---a dimensionless elastic constant $\eps>0$---we establish that, as $\eps\to0$, the minimizers converge to a projection-valued map that minimizes the Dirichlet integral away from a single point in $Ω$. We also provide a description of th…
We consider a variational two-dimensional Landau-de Gennes model in the theory of nematic liquid crystals in a disk of radius $R$. We prove that under a symmetric boundary condition carrying a topological defect of degree $\frac{k}{2}$ for some given {\bf even} non-zero integer $k$, there are exactly two minimizers for all large enough $R$. We show that the minimizers do not inherit the full symmetry structure of the energy functional and the boundary data. We further show that there are at least five symmetric critical points.
In this paper, we study the connection between the Ericksen-Leslie equations and the Beris-Edwards equations in dimension two. It is shown that the weak solutions to the Beris-Edwards equations converge to the one to the Ericksen-Leslie equations as the elastic coefficient tends to zero. Moreover, the limiting weak solutions to the Ericksen-Leslie equations may have singular points.
We consider a Landau-de Gennes model for a suspension of small colloidal inclusions in a nematic host. We impose suitable anchoring conditions at the boundary of the inclusions, and we work in the dilute regime - i.e., the size of the inclusions is much smaller than the typical separation distance between them, so that the total volume occupied by the inclusions is small. By studying the homogenised limit, and proving rigorous convergence results for local minimisers, we compute the effective free energy for the doped material. In particular, we show that not only the phase transition temperat…
In our previous work,, we studied asymptotic behavior of minimizers of the Landau-de Gennes energy functional on planar domains as the nematic correlation length converges to zero. Here we improve upon those results, in particular by sharpening the description of the limiting map of the minimizers. We also provide an expression for the energy valid for a small, but fixed value of the nematic correlation length.
We study a modified Landau-de Gennes model for nematic liquid crystals, where the elastic term is assumed to be of subquadratic growth in the gradient. We analyze the behaviour of global minimizers in two- and three-dimensional domains, subject to uniaxial boundary conditions, in the asymptotic regime where the length scale of the defect cores is small compared to the length scale of the domain. We obtain uniform convergence of the minimizers and of their gradients, away from the singularities of the limiting uniaxial map. We also demonstrate the presence of maximally biaxial cores in minimize…
In this work, we study the nematic-isotropic phase transition based on the dynamics of the Landau--De Gennes theory of liquid crystals. At the critical temperature, the Landau--De Gennes bulk potential favors the isotropic phase and nematic phase equally. When the elastic coefficient is much smaller than that of the bulk potential, a scaling limit can be derived by formal asymptotic expansions: the solution gradient concentrates on a closed surface evolving by mean curvature flow. Moreover, on one side of the surface the solution tends to the nematic phase which is governed by the harmonic map…
We consider the Landau-de Gennes variational model for nematic liquid crystals, in three-dimensional domains. More precisely, we study the asymptotic behaviour of minimizers as the elastic constant tends to zero, under the assumption that minimizers are uniformly bounded and their energy blows up as the logarithm of the elastic constant. We show that there exists a closed set S of finite length, such that minimizers converge to a locally harmonic map away from S. Moreover, S restricted to the interior of the domain is a locally finite union of straight line segments. We provide sufficient cond…
We compute the $Γ$-limit of energy functionals describing mechanical systems composed of a thin nematic liquid crystal elastomer sustaining a homogeneous and isotropic elastic membrane. We work in the regime of infinitesimal displacements and model the orientation of the liquid crystal according to the order tensor theories of both Frank and De Gennes. We describe the asymptotic regime by analysing a family of functionals parametrised by the thickness of the membranes and the relative ratio of the elastic constants, establishing that, in the limit, the system is represented by a two-dimensiona…

We study the effects of elastic anisotropy on the Landau-de Gennes critical points for nematic liquid crystals, in a square domain. The elastic anisotropy is captured by a parameter, $L_2$, and the critical points are described by three degrees of freedom. We analytically construct a symmetric critical point for all admissible values of $L_2$, which is necessarily globally stable for small domains i.e., when the square edge length, $λ$, is small enough. We perform asymptotic analyses and numerical studies to discover at least $5$ classes of these symmetric critical points - the $WORS$, $Ring^{…
We study the spherical droplet problem in 3D-Landau de Gennes theory with finite temperature. By rigorously constructing the biaxial-ring solutions and split-core-segment solutions, we theoretically confirm the numerical results of Gartland-Mkaddem in [14]. The structures of disclinations are also addressed.
In this paper, we derive the sharp interface model of the nematic-isotropic phase transition from the Landau-de Gennes theory by using the matched asymptotic expansion method. The model includes the evolution equation of the velocity and director field of the liquid crystal, the sharp interface and Young-Laplace jump condition on the interface.
Within the framework of the generalized Landau-de Gennes theory, we identify a $Q$-tensor-based energy that reduces to the four-constant Oseen-Frank energy when it is considered over orientable uniaxial nematic states. Although the commonly considered version of the Landau-de Gennes theory has an elastic contribution that is at most cubic in components of the $Q$-tensor and their derivatives, the alternative offered here is quartic in these variables. One clear advantage of our approach over the cubic theory is that the associated minimization problem is well-posed for a significantly wider ch…
We study the radial-hedgehog solution in a three-dimensional spherical droplet, with homeotropic boundary conditions, within the Landau-de Gennes theory for nematic liquid crystals. The radial-hedgehog solution is a candidate for a globally stable configuration in this model framework and is also a prototype configuration for studying isolated point defects in condensed matter physics. The static properties of the radial-hedgehog solution are governed by a nonlinear singular ordinary differential equation. We consider two different limits separately - the \emph{vanishing core limit} and \emph{…
We investigate prototypical profiles of point defects in two dimensional liquid crystals within the framework of Landau-de Gennes theory. Using boundary conditions characteristic of defects of index $k/2$, we find a critical point of the Landau-de Gennes energy that is characterised by a system of ordinary differential equations. In the deep nematic regime, $b^2$ small, we prove that this critical point is the unique global minimiser of the Landau-de Gennes energy. We investigate in greater detail the regime of vanishing elastic constant $L \to 0$, where we obtain three explicit point defect p…
We study planar nematic equilibria on a two-dimensional annulus with strong and weak tangent anchoring, within the Oseen-Frank and Landau-de Gennes theories for nematic liquid crystals. We analyse the defect-free state in the Oseen-Frank framework and obtain analytic stability criteria in terms of the elastic anisotropy, annular aspect ratio and anchoring strength. We consider radial and azimuthal perturbations of the defect-free state separately, which yields a complete stability diagram for the defect-free state. We construct nematic equilibria with an arbitrary number of defects on a two-di…
In this paper we study a gradient flow generated by the Landau-de Gennes free energy that describes nematic liquid crystal configurations in the space of $Q$-tensors. This free energy density functional is composed of three quadratic terms as the elastic energy density part, and a singular potential in the bulk part that is considered as a natural enforcement of a physical constraint on the eigenvalues of $Q$. The system is a non-diagonal parabolic system with a singular potential which trends to infinity logarithmically when the eigenvalues of $Q$ approaches the physical boundary. We give a r…

In this article, we study minimization of the Landau-de Gennes energy for liquid crystal elastomer. The total energy, is of the sum of the Lagrangian elastic stored energy function of the elastomer and the Eulerian Landau-de Gennes energy of the liquid crystal. Our model consider two sources of anisotropy represented by the traceless nematic order tensor $Q$ (rigid units), and the positive definite step-length tensor $L$ (network). This work is motivated by the study of cytoskeletal networks which can be regarded as consisting of rigid rod units crosslinked into a polymeric-type network. Due to…
We study a class of symmetric critical points in a variational $2D$ Landau - de Gennes model where the state of nematic liquid crystals is described by symmetric traceless $3\times 3$ matrices. These critical points play the role of topological point defects carrying a degree $\frac k 2$ for a nonzero integer $k$. We prove existence and study the qualitative behavior of these symmetric solutions. Our main result is the instability of critical points when $k\neq \pm 1, 0$.
For the Landau-de Gennes functional on 3D domains, \begin{equation*} I_{\varepsilon}(Q,Ω):=\int_Ω\left\{\frac{1}{2}|\nabla Q|^2+\frac{1}{\varepsilon^2}\left( -\frac{a^2}{2}\mathrm{tr}(Q^2)-\frac{b^2}{3}\mathrm{tr}(Q^3)+\frac{c^2}{4}[\mathrm{tr}(Q^2)]^2 \right) \right\}\,dx, \end{equation*} it is well-known that under suitable boundary conditions, the global minimizer $Q_\varepsilon$ converges strongly in $H^1(Ω)$ to a uniaxial minimizer $Q_*=s_+(n_*\otimes n_*-\frac{1}{3}\mathrm{Id})$ up to some subsequence $\varepsilon_n\rightarrow\infty$ , where $n_*\in H^1(Ω,\mathbb{S}^2)$ is a minimizing h…
We study the behaviour of global minimizers of a continuum Landau-de Gennes energy functional for nematic liquid crystals, in three-dimensional axially symmetric domains domains diffeomorphic to a ball (a nematic droplet) and in a restricted class of $\bbS^1$-equivariant configurations. It is known from our previous paper \cite{DMP2} that, assuming smooth and uniaxial (e.g. homeotropic) boundary conditions and a physically relevant norm constraint in the interior (Lyuksyutov constraint), minimizing configurations are either of \emph{torus} or of \emph{split} type. Here, starting from a nematic…
We consider a nematic liquid crystal occupying the exterior region in R^3 outside of a spherical particle, with radial strong anchoring. Within the context of the Landau-de Gennes theory, we study minimizers subject to a strong external field, modelled by an additional term which favors nematic alignment parallel to the field. When the external field is high enough we obtain a scaling law for the energy. The energy scale corresponds to minimizers concentrating their energy in a boundary layer around the particle, with quadrupolar symmetry. This suggests the presence of a Saturn ring defect aro…
We prove the existence of a well order reconstruction solution (WORS) type Landau-de Gennes critical point on a square domain with an isotropic concentric square inclusion, with tangent boundary conditions on the outer square edges. There are two geometrical parameters - the outer square edge length $λ$, and the aspect ratio $ρ$, which is the ratio of the inner and outer square edge lengths. The WORS exists for all geometrical parameters and for all temperatures; we prove that the WORS is globally stable for either $λ$ small enough or for $ρ$ sufficiently close to unity. We study three differe…
We consider a Landau-de Gennes model for a polydisperse, inhomogeneous suspension of colloidal inclusions in a nematic host, in the dilute regime. We study the homogenised limit and compute the effective free energy of the composite material. By suitably choosing the shape of the inclusions and imposing a quadratic, Rapini-Papoular type surface anchoring energy density, we obtain an effective free energy functional with an additional linear term, which may be interpreted as an "effective field" induced by the inclusions. Moreover, we compute the effective free energy in a regime of "very stron…
We study uniaxial solutions of the Euler-Lagrange equations for a Landau-de Gennes free energy for nematic liquid crystals, with a fourth order bulk potential, with and without elastic anisotropy. In the elastic isotropic case, we show that (i) all uniaxial solutions of the Euler-Lagrange equations, with a director field of certain symmetry, necessarily have the radial-hedgehog structure modulo an orthogonal transformation, (ii) the "escape into third dimension" director cannot correspond to a purely uniaxial solution of the Landau-de Gennes Euler-Lagrange equations and we do not use artificia…
We study $k$-radially symmetric solutions corresponding to topological defects of charge $\frac{k}{2}$ for integer $k \neq 0$ in the Landau-de Gennes model describing liquid crystals in two-dimensional domains. We show that the solutions whose radial profiles satisfy a natural sign invariance are stable when $|k| = 1$ (unlike the case $|k|>1$ which we treated before). The proof crucially uses the monotonicity of the suitable components, obtained by making use of the cooperative character of the system. A uniqueness result for the radial profiles is also established.
We study nematic liquid crystal configurations in confined geometries within the continuum Landau--De Gennes theory. These nematic configurations are mathematically described by symmetric, traceless two-tensor fields, known as $\Qvec$-tensor order parameter fields. We obtain explicit upper bounds for the order parameters of equilibrium liquid crystal configurations in terms of the temperature, material constants, boundary conditions and the domain geometry. These bounds are compared with the bounds predicted by the statistical mechanics definition of the $\Qvec$-tensor order parameter. They gi…
