We consider double Dirichlet series associated with arithmetic functions such as the von Mangoldt function, the Möbius function, and so on. We show analytic continuations of them by use of the Mellin-Barnes integral. Furthermore we observe their reverse values at non-positive integer points.
The manuscript reviews Dirichlet Series of important multiplicative arithmetic functions. The aim is to represent these as products and ratios of Riemann zeta-functions, or, if that concise format is not found, to provide the leading factors of the infinite product over zeta-functions. If rooted at the Dirichlet series for powers, for sums-of-divisors and for Euler's totient, the inheritance of multiplicativity through Dirichlet convolution or ordinary multiplication of pairs of arithmetic functions generates most of the results.
This paper is a continuation of our previous work on double Dirichlet series associated with arithmetic functions such as the von Mangoldt function, the Möbius function, and so on. We consider the analytic behaviour around the non-positive integer points on singularity sets which are points of indeterminacy. In particular, we show a certain reciprocity law of their residues. Also on this occasion we correct some inaccuracies in our previous paper.
Assuming a conjecture on distinct zeros of Dirichlet L-functions we get asymptotic results on the average number of representations of an integer as the sum of two primes in arithmetic progression. On the other hand the existence of good error terms gives information on the the location of zeros of L-functions and possible Siegel zeros. Similar results are obtained for an integer in a congruence class expressed as the sum of two primes.
Let $L(s,χ)$ be a fixed Dirichlet $L$-function. Given a vertical arithmetic progression of $T$ points on the line $\Re(s)=1/2$, we show that $\gg T \log T$ of them are not zeros of $L(s,χ)$. This result provides some theoretical evidence towards the conjecture that all ordinates of zeros of Dirichlet $L$-functions are linearly independent over the rationals. We also establish an upper bound (depending upon the progression) for the first member of the arithmetic progression that is not a zero of $L(s,χ)$.
If $a$ and $d$ are relatively prime, we refer to the set of integers congruent to $a$ mod $d$ as an `eligible' arithmetic progression. A theorem of Dirichlet says that every eligible arithmetic progression contains infinitely many primes; the theorem follows from the assertion that every eligible arithmetic progression contains at least one prime. The Jacobsthal function $g(n)$ is defined as the smallest positive integer such that every sequence of $g(n)$ consecutive integers contains an integer relatively prime to $n$. In this paper, we show by a combinatorial argument that every eligible ari…
Let v be a multiplicative arithmetic function with support of positive asymptotic density. We prove that for any not identically zero arithmetic function f such that \sum_{f(n) \neq 0} 1 / n < \infty, the support of the Dirichlet convolution f * v possesses a positive asymptotic density. When f is a multiplicative function, we give also a quantitative version of this claim. This generalizes a previous result of P. Pollack and the author, concerning the support of Möbius and Dirichlet transforms of arithmetic functions.
In this paper, we would like to propose a fundamental question about a higher dimensional analogue of Dirichlet's unit theorem. We also give a partial answer to the question as an application of the arithmetic Hodge index theorem.
In this mainly expository article, we revisit some formal aspects of B{á}ez-Duarte's criterion for the Riemann hypothesis. In particular, starting from Weingartner's formulation of the criterion, we define an arithmetical function $ν$, which is equal to the M{ö}bius function if, and only if the Riemann hypothesis is true. We record the basic properties of the Dirichlet series of $ν$, and state a few questions. KEYWORDS: Riemann hypothesis, arithmetical functions, Dirichlet series, Hilbert space
In this paper we address the problem of computing asymptotic formulae for the expected values and second moments of central values of primitive Dirichlet $L$-functions $L(1/2,χ_{8d}\otimesψ)$ when $ψ$ is a fixed even primitive non-quadratic character of odd modulus $q$, $χ_{8d}$ is a primitive quadratic character, $d\equiv h\pmod r$ is odd and squarefree and $r\equiv0\pmod q$ is even. Restricting to these arithmetic progressions ensures that the resulting sets of $L$-functions each form a ``family of primitive $L$-functions" in the specific sense defined by Conrey, Farmer, Keating, Rubinstein …
It is known that there are infinitely-many prime numbers which take the form of a polynomial of degree one with integer coefficients, this is Dirichlet's theorem. We use an elementary sieving argument together with bounds on the prime number counting function to provide a new proof of Dirichlet's theorem. We show that if $a\in \mathbb{N},k\in \mathbb{N},a_{k}=(a,a+1,...,a+k-1) $ and $A=\left\{ p_{1},p_{2},...,p_{n}\right\} $, a finite set of primes. Then the number of components of $a_{k}$ that are divisible by some prime in $A$ is less than or equal to $$ \sum\limits_{\substack{ d|P(A)\\ d>1}…
Using estimates on Hooley's $Δ$-function and a short interval version of the celebrated Dirichlet hyperbola principle, we derive an asymptotic formula for a class of arithmetic functions over short segments. Numerous examples are also given.
We prove a Voronoi formula for coefficients of a large class of $L$-functions including Maass cusp forms, Rankin-Selberg convolutions, and certain isobaric sums. Our proof is based on the functional equations of $L$-functions twisted by Dirichlet characters and does not directly depend on automorphy. Hence it has wider application than previous proofs. The key ingredient is the construction of a double Dirichlet series.
The paper deals with lower bounds for the remainder term in asymptotics for a certain class of arithmetic functions. Typically, these are generated by a Dirichlet series which involves a product of Riemann zeta-functions of a special form.
We study the double character sum $\sum\limits_{\substack{m\leq X,\\m\odd}}\sum\limits_{\substack{n\leq Y,\\n\odd}}\leg mn$ and its smoothly weighted counterpart. An asymptotic formula with power saving error term was obtained by Conrey, Farmer and Soundararajan by applying the Poisson summation formula. The result is interesting, because the main term involves a non-smooth function. In this paper, we apply the inverse Mellin transform twice and study the resulting double integral that involves a double Dirichlet series. This method has two advantages -- it leads to a better error term, and th…

Dirichlet's theorem on arithmetic progressions called as Dirichlet prime number theorem is a classical result in number theory. Atle Selberg\cite{Selberg} gave an elementary proof of this theorem. In this article we give an alternative proof of it based on a previous result of us. Also we get an estimation of the prime counting function in the special cases.
In an earlier paper, we studied solutions g to convolution equations of the form a_d*g^{*d}+a_{d-1}*g^{*(d-1)}+...+a_1*g+a_0=0, where a_0, ..., a_d are given arithmetic functions associated with Dirichlet series which converge on some right half plane, and also g is required to be such a function. In this article, we extend our previous results to multidimensional general Dirichlet series of the form \sum_{x\in X} f(x) e^{-sx} (s in C^k), where X is an additive subsemigroup of [0,\infty)^k. If X is discrete and a certain solvability criterion is satisfied, we determine solutions by an elementa…
We introduce Möbius functions of higher rank, a new class of arithmetic functions so that the classical Möbius function is of rank 2. With this idea, we evaluate Dirichlet series on the sum of the reciprocal square of all $r$-free numbers. For the proof, the Riemann zeta function and cyclotomic polynomials play a key role.
We explore an idea of Conrey and Li of expressing the Selberg trace formula as a Dirichlet series. We describe two applications, including an interpretation of the Selberg eigenvalue conjecture in terms of quadratic twists of certain Dirichlet series, and a formula for an arithmetically weighted sum of the complete symmetric square L-functions associated to cuspidal Maass newforms of squarefree level N>1.
We study three functions which are power series in the variable $z$, Dirichlet series in the variable $s$ and with coefficients given by arithmetical functions. A strong point is to relate these functions to some Hilbert spaces. Three main ingredients are used: an estimate of Davenport on sums of Möbius functions, a result of Lucht on convolutions of arithmetical Dirichlet series and the introduction of an operation $\otimes$ on power series, naturally associated with the mentioned Hilbert spaces.
For Dirichlet series roughly of the type $Z(s, w) = sum_d L(s, chi_d) d^{-w}$ the subconvexity bound $Z(s, w) \ll (sw(s+w))^{1/6+\varepsilon}$ is proved on the critical lines $\Re s = \Re w = 1/2$. The convexity bound would replace 1/6 with 1/4. In addition, a mean square bound is proved that is consistent with the Lindelöf hypothesis. An interesting specialization is $s=1/2$ in which case the above result give a subconvex bound for a Dirichlet series without an Euler product.
We show that if $F(s)$ is a nondegenerate ordinary Dirichlet series with nonnegative coefficients and $F(k)$ is a rational number for all large enough positive integers $k$, then the denominators of those rational numbers are unbounded. In particular, our result holds for the Riemann zeta function over any arithmetic progression. These results are derived via upper bounds on associated Hankel determinants.
We study upper bounds for sums of Dirichlet characters. We prove a uniform upper bound of the character sum over all proper generalized arithmetic progressions, which generalizes the classical Polya and Vinogradov inequality. Our argument is based on getting an upper bound for the l1 norm of the Fourier coefficients of a generalized arithmetic progression. Our method also applies to give upper bounds for polynomial exponential sums.
Let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic number field of class number one and $\mathcal{O}_K$ be its ring of integers. We show that, if the arithmetic functions $f, g:\mathcal{O}_K\rightarrow \mathbb{C}$ both have level of distribution $\vartheta$ for some $0<\vartheta\leq 1/2$ then the Dirichlet convolution $f*g$ also have level of distribution $\vartheta$.
We study a double Dirichlet series of the form $\sum_{d}L(s,χ_{d}χ)χ'(d)d^{-w}$, where $χ$ and $χ'$ are quadratic Dirichlet characters with prime conductors $N$ and $M$ respectively. A functional equation group isomorphic to the dihedral group of order 6 continues the function meromorphically to $\mathbb{C}^{2}$. A convexity bound at the central point is established to be $(MN)^{3/8+\varepsilon}$ and a subconvexity bound of $(MN(M+N))^{1/6+\varepsilon}$ is proven. The developed theory is used to prove an upper bound for the smallest positive integer $d$ such that $L(1/2,χ_{dN})$ does not vanis…
We consider the asymptotic behavior of the mean square of truncations of the Dirichlet series of $ζ(s)^k$. We discuss the connections of this problem with that of the variance of the divisor function in short intervals and in arithmetic progressions, reviewing the recent results on this topic. Finally, we show how these results can all be proved assuming a suitable version of the moments conjecture.
It is a classic result that two number fields have equal Dedekind zeta functions if and only if the arithmetic type of a prime $p$ is the same in both fields for almost all prime $p$. Here, almost all means with the possible exception of a set of Dirichlet density zero. One of the results of this paper shows that the condition density zero can be improved to a specific positive density that depends solely in the degree of the fields. More specifically, for every positive $n$ we exhibit a positive constan $c_{n}$ such that any two degree $n$ number fields $K$ and $L$ are arithmetically equivale…
Dirichlet's proof of infinitely many primes in arithmetic progressions was published in 1837, introduced L-series for the first time, and it is said to have started rigorous analytic number theory. Dirichlet uses Euler's earlier work on the zeta function and the distribution of primes. He first proves a simpler case before going to full generality. The paper was translated from German by R. Stephan and given a reference section.
This paper provides asymptotics with a sharp error term for the Dirichlet summatory function of a certain class of arithmetic functions. The result applies, e.g., to the sums over r^2(n) and r(n^3), where r(m) denotes the number of ways to write m as a sum of two squares of integers.
We construct a class of companion elliptic functions associated with the even Dirichlet characters. Using the well-known properties of the classical Weierstrass elliptic function $\wp(z|τ)$ as the blueprint, we will derive their representations in terms of $q$-series and partial fractions, explore the significance of the coefficients of their power series expansions and establish the modular properties under the actions of the arithmetic groups $Γ_0(N)$ and $Γ_1(N)$.
In this paper, we confirm a smoothed version of a recent conjecture on the variance of the k-fold divisor function in arithmetic progressions to individual composite moduli, in a restricted range. In contrast to a previous result of Rodgers and Soundararajan, we do not require averaging over the moduli. Our proof adapts a technique of S. Lester who treated in the same range the variance of the k-fold divisor function in the short intervals setting, and is based on a smoothed Voronoi summation formula but twisted by multiplicative characters. The use of Dirichlet characters allows us to extend …
We study the variance of sums of the $k$-fold divisor function $d_k(n)$ over sparse arithmetic progressions, with averaging over both residue classes and moduli. In a restricted range, we confirm an averaged version of a recent conjecture about the asymptotics of this variance. This result is closely related to moments of Dirichlet $L$-functions and our proof relies on the asymptotic large sieve.
In this paper, we compute and verify the positivity of the Li coefficients for the Dirichlet $L$-functions using an arithmetic formula established in Omar and Mazhouda, J. Number Theory 125 (2007) no.1, 50-58; J. Number Theory 130 (2010) no.4, 1109-1114. Furthermore, we formulate a criterion for the partial Riemann hypothesis and we provide some numerical evidence for it using new formulas for the Li coefficients.
To obtain the Dirichlet series for complex powers of the Riemann zeta function, we define and study the basic properties of a sequence of polynomials that, used as coefficients of the respective terms of the Dirichlet series of the Riemann zeta function in the half plane $x > 1$, produces the required exponential function. Unlike the method described in ([4], p.~278), which requires more advanced knowledge of the relationships between Dirichlet series and multiplicative arithmetic functions, our approach only needs mathematical induction on the total number of prime divisors of $n$, the Dirich…
We study the 2k-th power moment of Dirichlet L-functions L(s,χ) at the centre of the critical strip (s=1/2), where the average is over all primitive characters χ(mod q). We extend to this case the hybrid Euler-Hadamard product results of Gonek, Hughes & Keating for the Riemann zeta function. This allows us to recover conjectures for the moments based on random matrix models, incorporating the arithmetical terms in a natural way.
We investigate the Shintani zeta functions associated to the prehomogeneous spaces, the example under consideration is the set of $2 \times 2\times 2$ integer cubes. We show that there are three relative invariants under a certain parabolic group action, they all have arithmetic nature and completely determine the equivalence classes. We show that the associated Shintani zeta function coincides with the $A_3$ Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series. Finally, we show that the set of semi-stable integer orbits maps finitely and surjectively to a certain moduli space.
In earlier work generalizing a 1977 theorem of Alladi, the authors proved a partition-theoretic formula to compute arithmetic densities of certain subsets of the positive integers $\mathbb N$ as limiting values of $q$-series as $q\to ζ$ a root of unity (instead of using the usual Dirichlet series to compute densities), replacing multiplicative structures of $\mathbb N$ by analogous structures in the integer partitions $\mathcal P$. In recent work, Wang obtains a wide generalization of Alladi's original theorem, in which arithmetic densities of subsets of prime numbers are computed as values of…
We generalize and unify the proofs of several results on algebraic in- dependence of arithmetic functions and Dirichlet series by a theorem of Ax on differential Schanuel conjecture. Along the way, we find counter-examples to some results in the literature.
We study short sums of algebraic trace functions via the $q$-analogue of van der Corput method, and develop methods of arithmetic exponent pairs that coincide with the classical case while the moduli has sufficiently good factorizations. As an application, we prove a quadratic analogue of Brun-Titchmarsh theorem on average, bounding the number of primes $p\leqslant X$ with $p^2+1\equiv0\pmod q$. The other two applications include a larger level of distribution of divisor functions in arithmetic progressions and a sub-Weyl subconvex bound of Dirichlet $L$-functions studied previously by Irving.
The problem of quantum unique ergodicity (QUE) of weight 1/2 Eisenstein series for Γ_0(4) leads to the study of certain double Dirichlet series involving GL2 automorphic forms and Dirichlet characters. We study the analytic properties of this family of double Dirichlet series (analytic continuation, convexity estimate) and prove that a subconvex estimate implies the QUE result.
We provide efficient methods to evaluate the Riemann zeta, the Lerch zeta and the Dirichlet $L$-functions. The method uses the Riemann-Siegel (RS) type formulas and a modified double exponential (MDE) quadrature method near the saddle point of appropriate integrands. We provide simplified derivations of the RS formulas, containing finite series sums and residual integrals, for the Lerch and the Dirichlet $L$-functions. The MDE method allows us to remove the contribution of the singularities near the contour of integration for the residual integrals. The method allows us to evaluate the residua…
In this paper, we give an explicit formula of the Shintani double zeta functions with any ramification in the most general setting of adeles over an arbitrary number field. Three applications of the explicit formula are given. First, we obtain a functional equation satisfied by the Shintani double zeta functions in addition to Shintani's functional equations. Second, we establish the holomorphicity of a certain Dirichlet series generalizing a result by Ibukiyama and Saito. This Dirichlet series occurs in the study of unipotent contributions of the geometric side of the Arthur-Selberg trace for…
Let $f(n)$ be an arithmetic function with $f(1)\neq0$ and let $f^{-1}(n)$ be its reciprocal with respect to the Dirichlet convolution. We study the asymptotic behaviour of $|f^{-1}(n)|$ with regard to the asymptotic behaviour of $|f(n)|$ assuming that the latter one grows or decays with at most polynomial or exponential speed. As a by-product, we obtain simple but constructive upper bounds for the number of ordered factorizations of $n$ into $k$ factors.
