In this paper, we propose an approach to accelerate the dissipation dynamics for quantum state generation with Lyapunov control. The strategy is to add target-state-related coherent control fields into the dissipation process to intuitively improve the evolution speed. By applying the current approach, without losing the advantages of dissipation dynamics, the target stationary states can be generated in a much shorter time as compared to that via traditional dissipation dynamics. As a result, the current approach containing the advantages of coherent unitary dynamics and dissipation dynamics allows for significant improvement in quantum state generation.

Manipulating the state of a logical quantum bit usually comes at the expense of exposing it to decoherence. Fault-tolerant quantum computing tackles this problem by manipulating quantum information within a stable manifold of a larger Hilbert space, whose symmetries restrict the number of independent errors. The remaining errors do not affect the quantum computation and are correctable after the fact. Here we implement the autonomous stabilization of an encoding manifold spanned by Schroedinger cat states in a superconducting cavity. We show Zeno-driven coherent oscillations between these stat…
Given any two quantum states $ρ$ and $σ$ in Hilbert spaces of equal dimension satisfying the majorization condition $ρ\succ σ$, it is always possible to transform $ρ\mapsto σ$ by a unital quantum map. In fact, any such transformation can be achieved just by means of noisy operations, i.e., by access to maximally mixed ancillary states and unitary transformations that act jointly in the system-ancilla space. Here, we investigate the possible transitions between states (i.e., the induced preorder of states) when one restricts the unitary control to the quantum system alone and replaces the maxim…

We theoretically investigate a possibility to establish multi-qubit quantum correlations in one-dimensional chains of qubits. We combine a reservoir engineering strategy with coherent dynamics to generate multi-qubit entangled states. We find that an interplay between the coherent and incoherent dynamics result in the generation of stable (time-independent) many-body entangled steady states. Our results will be relevant in the context of the dissipative generation of quantum states, with applications in short-distance quantum computation and for exploring the emergence of collective phenomena …
We analyze the properties of a pulsed Coherent Population Trapping protocol that uses a controlled decay from the excited state in a $Λ$-level scheme. We study this problem analytically and numerically and find regimes where narrow transmission, absorption, or fluorescence spectral lines occur. We then look for optimal frequency measurements using these spectral features by computing the Allan deviation in the presence of ground state decoherence and show that the protocol is on a par with Ramsey-CPT. We discuss possible implementations with ensembles of alkali atoms and single ions and demons…
We introduce a protocol for dynamical dispersion engineering in an atomic chain consisting of an ordered array of multi-level atoms with subwavelength lattice constant. This chain supports dark states that are protected from dissipation in the form of photon emission and can be understood as propagating spin waves traveling along the array. By using an external control field with a spatially-varying elliptical polarization we correlate internal and external degrees of freedom of the array in a controllable way. The coherent control over the atomic states translates into control over the group …
In quantum lattice systems with geometric frustration, particles cannot move coherently due to destructive interference between tunnelling processes. Here we show that purely local, Markovian dissipation can induce mobility and long-range first-order coherence in frustrated lattice systems that is entirely generated by incoherent processes. Interactions reduce the coherences and mobility but do not destroy them. These effects are observable in experimental implementations of driven-dissipative lattices with a flat band and non-uniform dissipation.
We theoretically characterize the semiclassical dynamics of an ensemble of atoms after a sudden quench across a driven-dissipative second-order phase transition. The atoms are driven by a laser and interact via conservative and dissipative long-range forces mediated by the photons of a single-mode cavity. These forces can cool the motion and, above a threshold value of the laser intensity, induce spatial ordering. We show that the relaxation dynamics following the quench exhibits a long prethermalizing behaviour which is first dominated by coherent long-range forces, and then by their interpla…
The small mass and high coherence of nanomechanical resonators render them the ultimate force probe, with applications ranging from biosensing and magnetic resonance force microscopy, to quantum optomechanics. A notorious challenge in these experiments is thermomechanical noise related to dissipation through internal or external loss channels. Here, we introduce a novel approach to defining nanomechanical modes, which simultaneously provides strong spatial confinement, full isolation from the substrate, and dilution of the resonator material's intrinsic dissipation by five orders of magnitude.…
We study the statistics of work, dissipation, and entropy production of a quantum quasi-isothermal process, where the system remains close to the thermal equilibrium along the transformation. We derive a general analytic expression for the work distribution and the cumulant generating function. All work cumulants split into a classical (non-coherent) and quantum (coherent) term, implying that close to equilibrium there are two independent channels of dissipation at all levels of the statistics. For non-coherent or commuting protocols, only the first two cumulants survive, leading to a Gaussian…
The assumption that quantum systems relax to a stationary state in the long-time limit underpins statistical physics and much of our intuitive understanding of scientific phenomena. For isolated systems this follows from the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis. When an environment is present the expectation is that all of phase space is explored, eventually leading to stationarity. Notable exceptions are decoherence-free subspaces that have important implications for quantum technologies and have so far only been studied for systems with a few degrees of freedom. Here we identify simple and g…

Quantum state transfer from an information-carrying qubit to a receiving qubit is ubiquitous for quantum information technology. In a closed quantum system, this task requires precisely-timed control of coherent qubit-qubit interactions that are intrinsically reciprocal. Here, breaking reciprocity by tailoring dissipation in an open system, we show that it is possible to autonomously transfer a quantum state between stationary qubits without time-dependent control. We present the general requirements for this directional transfer process, and show that the minimum system dimension for transfer…
Dissipation can usually induce detrimental decoherence in a quantum system. However, engineered dissipation can be used to prepare and stabilize coherent quantum many-body states. Here, we show that by engineering dissipators containing photon pair operators, one can stabilize an exotic dark state, which is a condensate of photon pairs with a phase-nematic order. In this system, the usual superfluid order parameter, i.e. single-photon correlation, is absent, while the photon pair correlation exhibits long-range order. Although the dark state is not unique due to multiple parity sectors, we dev…
We investigate the competition of coherent and dissipative dynamics in many-body systems at continuous quantum transitions. We consider dissipative mechanisms that can be effectively described by Lindblad equations for the density matrix of the system. The interplay between the critical coherent dynamics and dissipation is addressed within a dynamic finite-size scaling framework, which allows us to identify the regime where they develop a nontrivial competition. We analyze protocols that start from critical many-body ground states and put forward general dynamic scaling behaviors involving the…
Accelerating non-spreading wavepackets in nonrelativistic free particle system, with probability distribution having an Airy function profile, were discovered by Berry and Balazs (1979), and have been subsequently realised in several optical experiments. It is shown that these wavepackets are actually Perelomov coherent states. It is found that the Galilean invariance of the Schrodinger equation plays a key role in making these states unique and giving rise to their unusual propagation properties.
In classical Markov jump processes, current fluctuations can only be reduced at the cost of increased dissipation. To explore how quantum effects influence this trade-off, we analyze the uncertainty of steady-state currents in Markovian open quantum systems. We first consider three instructive examples and then systematically minimize the product of uncertainty and entropy production for small open quantum systems. As our main result, we find that the thermodynamic cost of reducing fluctuations can be lowered below the classical bound by coherence. We conjecture that this cost can be made arbi…
We study the critical behavior of the nonequilibrium dynamics and of the steady states emerging from the competition between coherent and dissipative dynamics close to quantum phase transitions. The latter is induced by the coupling of the system with a Markovian bath, such that the evolution of the system's density matrix can be effectively described by a Lindblad master equation. We devise general scaling behaviors for the out-of-equilibrium evolution and the stationary states emerging in the large-time limit for generic initial conditions, in terms of the parameters of the Hamiltonian provi…
We consider $N$ uniformly-accelerating Unruh-DeWitt detectors whose internal degrees of freedom are coupled to a massless scalar field in $(1+1)$D Minkowski space. We use the influence functional formalism to derive the Langevin equations governing the nonequilibrium dynamics of the internal degrees of freedom and show explicitly that the system relaxes in time and equilibrates. We also show that once the equilibrium condition is established a set of fluctuation-dissipation relations (FDR) and correlation-propagation relations (CPR) emerges for the detectors, extending earlier results of [1] w…

The average time required for an open quantum system to reach a steady state (the steady-state time) is generally determined through a competition of coherent and incoherent (dissipative) dynamics. Here, we study this competition for a ubiquitous central-spin system, corresponding to a `central' spin-1/2 coherently coupled to ancilla spins and undergoing dissipative spin relaxation. The ancilla system can describe $N$ spins-1/2 or, equivalently, a single large spin of length $I=N/2$. We find exact analytical expressions for the steady-state time in terms of the dissipation rate, resulting in a…
Recent theoretical work has shown that the competition between coherent unitary dynamics and stochastic measurements, performed by the environment, along wavefunction trajectories can give rise to transitions in the entanglement scaling. In this work, complementary to these previous studies, we analyze a situation where the role of Hamiltonian and dissipative dynamics is reversed. We consider an engineered dissipation, which stabilizes an entangled phase of a quantum spin$-1/2$ chain, while competing single-particle or interacting Hamiltonian dynamics induce a disentangled phase. Focusing on t…
Long-range coherent interactions between quantum emitters are instrumental for quantum information and simulation technologies, but they are generally difficult to isolate from dissipation. Here, we show how such interactions can be obtained in photonic Weyl environments due to the emergence of an exotic bound state whose wavefunction displays power-law spatial confinement. Using an exact formalism, we show how this bound state can mediate coherent transfer of excitations between emitters, with virtually no dissipation and with a transfer rate that follows the same scaling with distance as the…
Berry phase effect plays a central role in many mesoscale condensed matter and quantum chemical systems that are naturally under the environmental influence of dissipation. We propose and microscopically derive a prototypical quantum coherent tunneling model around a monopole or conical potential intersection in order to address the intriguing but overlooked interplay between dissipation and topologically nontrivial Berry phase effect. We adopt the instanton approach with both symmetry analysis and accurate numerical solutions that consistently incorporate nonperturbative dissipation and Berry…
