Berry phase effect plays a central role in many mesoscale condensed matter and quantum chemical systems that are naturally under the environmental influence of dissipation. We propose and microscopically derive a prototypical quantum coherent tunneling model around a monopole or conical potential intersection in order to address the intriguing but overlooked interplay between dissipation and topologically nontrivial Berry phase effect. We adopt the instanton approach with both symmetry analysis and accurate numerical solutions that consistently incorporate nonperturbative dissipation and Berry phase. It reveals a novel dissipative quantum interference phenomenon with Berry phase effect. The phase diagram of this tunneling exhibits Kramers degeneracy, nonmonotonic dependence on dissipation and a generic dissipation-driven phase transition of quantum interference, before which an unconventional dissipation-enhanced regime of quantum tunneling persists.
We show that in gapped bilayer graphene, quasiparticle tunneling and the corresponding Berry phase can be controlled such that it exhibits features of single layer graphene such as Klein tunneling. The Berry phase is detected by a high-quality Fabry-Pérot interferometer based on bilayer graphene. By raising the Fermi energy of the charge carriers, we find that the Berry phase can be continuously tuned from $2π$ down to $0.68π$ in gapped bilayer graphene, in contrast to the constant Berry phase of $2π$ in pristine bilayer graphene. Particularly, we observe a Berry phase of $π$, the standard val…
Currents of the single-electron transistors driven by time-dependent fields via external dissipative circuits are investigated theoretically. By expressing the external circuit in terms of driven harmonic oscillators and using the reduced-density operator method, we derive time- and environment-dependent tunneling rates in the regime of sequential tunneling and present expressions for both displacement and tunneling currents with these tunneling rates. It is found that the dissipative environments affect tunneling currents in two ways; the determination of driving voltages at tunneling junctio…
Macroscopic quantum coherence and spin-phase interference are studied between excited levels in single-domain ferromagnetic particles in a magnetic field along the hard anisotropy axis. The system has the general structure of magnetocrystalline anisotropy, such as biaxial, trigonal, tetragonal, and hexagonal symmetry. This study not only just yields the previous spin-phase interference results for the ground state tunneling, but also provide a generalization of the Kramers degeneracy to coherently spin tunneling at low-lying excited states. These analytical results are found to be in good agre…
Klein tunneling in gapless bilayer graphene, perfect reflection of electrons injecting normal to a pn junction, is expected to disappear in the presence of energy band gap induced by external gates. We theoretically show that the Klein effect still exists in gapped bilayer graphene, provided that the gaps in the n and p regions are balanced such that the polarization of electron pseudospin has the same normal component to the bilayer plane in the regions. We attribute the Klein effect to Berry phase $π$ (rather than the conventional value $2 π$ of bilayer graphene) and to electron-hole and tim…
We formulate the problem of electron transport through a single-molecule magnet (SMM) in the Coulomb blockade regime taking into account topological interference effects for the tunneling of the large spin of a SMM. The interference originates from spin Berry phases associated with different tunneling paths. We show that in the case of incoherent spin states it is essential to place the SMM between oppositely spin-polarized source and drain leads in order to detect the spin tunneling in the stationary current, which exhibits topological zeros as a function of the transverse magnetic field.
We discuss the concept of the Berry phase in a dissipative system. We show that one can identify a Berry phase in a weakly-dissipative system and find the respective correction to this quantity, induced by the environment. This correction is expressed in terms of the symmetrized noise power and is therefore insensitive to the nature of the noise representing the environment, namely whether it is classical or quantum mechanical. It is only the spectrum of the noise which counts. We analyze a model of a spin-half (qubit) anisotropically coupled to its environment and explicitly show the coincide…
We measure tunneling through a single quantum level in a carbon nanotube quantum dot connected to resistive metal leads. For the electrons tunneling to/from the nanotube, the leads serve as a dissipative environment, which suppresses the tunneling rate. In the regime of sequential tunneling, the height of the single-electron conductance peaks increases as the temperature is lowered, although it scales more weekly than the conventional 1/T. In the resonant tunneling regime (temperature smaller than the level width), the peak width approaches saturation, while the peak height starts to decrease.…
The Landauer formula for electrical conductance is simple but works remarkably well in mesoscopic systems. We propose a Landauer-like formula for calculating an escape rate out of a dissipative metastable well, the quantum Kramers rate.
The tunneling current between independently contacted graphene sheets separated by boron nitride insulator is calculated. Both dissipative tunneling transitions, with momentum transfer due to disorder scattering, and non-dissipative regime of tunneling, which appears due to intersection of electron and hole branches of energy spectrum, are described. Dependencies of tunneling current on concentrations in top and bottom graphene layers, which are governed by the voltages applied through independent contacts and gates, are considered for the back- and double-gated structures. The current-voltage…
Valley is a useful degree of freedom for non-dissipative electronics since valley current that can flow even in an insulating material does not accompany electronic current. We use dual-gated bilayer graphene in the Hall bar geometry to electrically control broken inversion symmetry or Berry curvature as well as the carrier density to generate and detect the pure valley current. We find a large nonlocal resistance and a cubic scaling between the nonlocal resistance and the local resistivity in the insulating regime at zero-magnetic field and 70 K as evidence of the pure valley current. The ele…
A Mn4 single-molecule magnet displays asymmetric Berry-phase interference patterns in the transverse-field (HT) dependence of the magnetization tunneling probability when a longitudinal field (HL) is present, contrary to symmetric patterns observed for HL=0. Reversal of HL results in a reflection of the transverse-field asymmetry about HT=0, as expected on the basis of the time-reversal invariance of the spin-orbit Hamiltonian which is responsible for the tunneling oscillations. A fascinating motion of Berry-phase minima within the transverse-field magnitude-direction phase space results from …
We theoretically investigate Klein tunneling processes in photonic artificial graphene. Klein tunneling is a phenomenon in which a particle with Dirac dispersion going through a potential step shows a characteristic angle- and energy-dependent transmission. We consider a generic photonic system consisting of a honeycomb-shaped array of sites with losses, illuminated by coherent monochromatic light. We show how the transmission and reflection coefficients can be obtained from the steady-state field profile of the driven-dissipative system. Despite the presence of photonic losses, we recover the…
We consider theoretically the transport properties of a spinless resonant electronic level coupled to strongly dissipative leads, in the regime of circuit impedance near the resistance quantum. Using the Luttinger liquid analogy, one obtains an effective Hamiltonian expressed in terms of interacting Majorana fermions, in which all environmental degrees of freedom (leads and electromagnetic modes) are encapsulated in a single fermionic bath. General transport equations for this system are then derived in terms of the Majorana T-matrix. Perturbative treatment of the Majorana interaction term yie…
We study the dissipative dynamics of a two-level system (TLS) exposed to strong ac driving. By combing Floquet theory with Van Vleck perturbation theory in the TLS tunneling matrix element, we diagonalize the time-dependent Hamiltonian and provide corrections to the renormalized Rabi frequency of the TLS, which are valid for both a biased and unbiased TLS and go beyond the known high-frequency and rotating-wave results. In order to mimic environmental influences on the TLS, we couple the system weakly to a thermal bath and solve analytically the corresponding Floquet-Bloch-Redfield master equa…
Berry phase effects in spin systems lead to the suppression of tunneling effects when different tunneling paths interfere destructively. Such effects have been seen in several single-molecule magnets (SMMs) through measurements of magnetization dynamics, where the experimental signal may arise from the contributions of numerous energy levels. Here we present experimental measurements of Berry phase interference effects that are determined through electron-spin resonance on a four-fold symmetric SMM. Specifically, we measure transitions between tunnel-split excited states in the Ni$_4$ SMM in t…
We report on the study of the non-trivial Berry phase in superconducting multiterminal quantum dots biased at commensurate voltages. Starting with the time-periodic Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, we obtain a tight binding model in the Floquet space, and we solve these equations in the semiclassical limit. We observe that the parameter space defined by the contact transparencies and quartet phase splits into two components with a non-trivial Berry phase. We use the Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization to calculate the Berry phase. We find that if the quantum dot level sits at zero energy, then the Ber…
We study the escape rate of a particle in a metastable potential in presence of a dissipative bath coupled to the momentum of the particle. Using the semiclassical bounce technique, we find that this rate is exponentially enhanced. In particular, the influence of momentum dissipation depends on the slope of the barrier that the particle is tunneling through. We investigate also the influence of dissipative baths coupled to the position, and to the momentum of the particle, respectively. In this case the rate exhibits a non-monotonic behavior as a function of the dissipative coupling strengths.…
We study bilayer quantum Hall systems at total Landau level filling factor $ν=1$ in the presence of interlayer tunneling and coupling to a dissipative normal fluid. Describing the dynamics of the interlayer phase by an effective quantum dissipative XY model, we show that there exists a critical dissipation $σ_c$ set by the conductance of the normal fluid. For $σ> σ_c$, interlayer tunnel splitting drives the system to a $ν=1$ quantum Hall state. For $σ<σ_c$, interlayer tunneling is irrelevant at low temperatures, the system exhibits a superfluid transition to a collective quantum Hall state sup…
We present a model of dissipative transport in the fractional quantum Hall regime. Our model takes account of tunneling through saddle points in the effective potential for excitations created by impurities. We predict the temperature range over which activated behavior is observed and explain why this range nearly always corresponds to around a factor two in temperature in both integer quantum Hall and fractional quantum Hall systems. We identify the ratio of the gap observed in the activated behavior and the temperature of the inflection point in the Arrhenius plot as an important diagnostic…
We introduce the concept of Berry's phase in Josephson junctions and consider how this geometric phase arises due to applied oscillating electric fields. The electromagnetic field excites topological quasi-particles from the junction vacuum which affect Cooper-pair tunneling across the Josephson junction barrier. A finite Berry's phase can be detected by its renormalization of the electric field amplitude absorbed by the junction. This has implications for the designing of accurate Josephson junction microwave detectors.
We theoretically study the driven-dissipative Harper-Hofstadter model on a 2D square lattice in the presence of a weak harmonic trap. Without pumping and loss, the eigenstates of this system can be understood, in certain limits, as momentum-space toroidal Landau levels, where the Berry curvature, a geometrical property of an energy band, acts like a momentum-space magnetic field. We show that key features of these eigenstates can be observed in the steady-state of the driven-dissipative system under a monochromatic coherent drive, and present a realistic proposal for an optical experiment usin…
The voltage-controlled Berry phases in two vertically coupled InGaAs/GaAs quantum dots are investigated theoretically. It is found that Berry phases can be changed dramatically from 0 to 2$π$ (or 2$π$ to 0) only simply by turning the external voltage. Under realistic conditions, as the tunneling is varied from $0.8eV$ to $0.9eV$ via a bias voltage, the Berry phases are altered obviously, which can be detected in an interference experiment. The scheme is expected to be useful in constructing quantum computation based on geometric phases in an asymmetrical double quantum dot controlled by voltag…
We consider a multiple tunneling process into a quantum dot capacitively coupled to a dissipative environment. The problem is mapped onto an anisotropic Kondo model in its Coulomb gas representation. The tunneling barrier resistance and the dissipative resistance of the environment correspond to the transverse and the longitudinal Kondo couplings respectively. We thus identify a line in the parameter space of the problem which corresponds to a zero-temperature Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless like phase transition. The physics of coupling to the environment is elucidated and experimental conseq…
The vibrational modes of Jahn-Teller molecules are affected by a Berry phase that is associated with a conical intersection of the adiabatic potentials. We investigate theoretically how this Berry phase affects transport through a single $E \otimes e$ Jahn-Teller molecule when the tunneling electrons continually switch the molecule between a symmetric and a Jahn-Teller distorted charge state. We find that the Berry phase in conjunction with a spectral trapping mechanism leads to a current blockade even in regions outside the Coulomb blockade. The blockade is strongly asymmetric in the gate vol…
The Landau-Zener transition in a two level system can be suppressed or enhanced by coupling to an environment, depending on the temperature and the environment spectral function. We consider the marginal spectral function, when the dissipation effects are important for arbitrarily slow motion. Landau-Zener transition rate demonstrates a non-trivial dependence of the on the ``bias'', i. e. on the rate of the two energy levels relative motion. The Landau-Zener transition is fully suppressed for the values of the bias below a threshold bias set by the coupling strength. Above the threshold, the t…
Electron-phonon scatterings in solid-state systems are pivotal processes in determining many key physical quantities such as charge carrier mobilities and thermal conductivities. Here, we report on the direct probing of phonon mode specific electron-phonon scatterings in layered semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides WSe2, MoSe2, WS2, and MoS2 through inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy measurements, quantum transport simulations, and density functional calculation. We experimentally and theoretically characterize momentum-conserving single- and two-phonon electron-phonon scatte…
Transport through molecular devices with strong coupling to a single vibrational mode is considered in the case where the vibration is damped by coupling to the environment. We focus on the weak tunneling limit, for which a rate equation approach is valid. The role of the environment can be characterized by a frictional damping term $\mysig(ω)$ and corresponding frequency shift. We consider a molecule that is attached to a substrate, leading to frequency-dependent frictional damping of the single oscillator mode of the molecule, and compare it to a reference model with frequency-independent da…
We investigate the geometric phase or Berry phase (BP) acquired by a spin-half which is both subject to a slowly varying magnetic field and weakly-coupled to a dissipative environment (either quantum or classical). We study how this phase is modified by the environment and find that the modification is of a geometric nature. While the original BP (for an isolated system) is the flux of a monopole-field through the loop traversed by the magnetic field, the environment-induced modification of the BP is the flux of a quadrupole-like field. We find that the environment-induced phase is complex, an…
The key feature of a quantum spin coupled to a harmonic bath---a model dissipative quantum system---is competition between oscillator potential energy and spin tunneling rate. We show that these opposing tendencies cause environmental entanglement through superpositions of adiabatic and antiadiabatic oscillator states, which then stabilizes the spin coherence against strong dissipation. This insight motivates a fast-converging variational coherent-state expansion for the many-body ground state of the spin-boson model, which we substantiate via numerical quantum tomography.
We study an array of dissipative tunnel-coupled cavities, each interacting with an incoherently pumped two-level emitter. For cavities in the lasing regime, we find correlations between the light fields of distant cavities, despite the dissipation and the incoherent nature of the pumping mechanism. These correlations decay exponentially with distance for arrays in any dimension but become increasingly long ranged with increasing photon tunneling between adjacent cavities. The interaction-dominated and the tunneling-dominated regimes show markedly different scaling of the correlation length whi…
Magnetization measurements of a molecular clusters Mn12 with a spin ground state of S = 10 show resonance tunneling at avoided energy level crossings. The observed oscillations of the tunnel probability as a function of the magnetic field applied along the hard anisotropy axis are due to topological quantum phase interference of two tunnel paths of opposite windings. Mn12 is therefore the second molecular clusters presenting quantum phase interference.
Transport through molecular devices with weak tunnel coupling to the leads but with strong coupling to a single vibrational mode is considered in the case where the vibration is damped by coupling to the environment. In particular, we investigate what influence the electrostatic coupling of the charge on the molecule to the vibrational modes of the environment has on the $I$-$V$ characteristics. We find that, for comparable characteristic length scales of the van-der-Waals and electrostatic interaction of the molecule with the environmental vibrational modes, the $I$-$V$ characteristics are qu…
An innovative microscopic model with a minimal number of parameters: tunneling splitting gap, external field sweeping velocity, and decoherence rate is used to describe dynamics of the dissipative Landau-Zener transition in the presence of the decoherence. In limiting cases, the derived equation of motion gives rise to the well-known Landau-Zener and Kayanuma formula. In a general case, the description demonstrates a non-monotonic flipping probability with respect to the sweeping velocity, which is also found in some other models. This non-monotony can be explained by considering the competiti…
Here we visualize the trapping of topological surface states in the circular n-p junctions on the top surface of the 7-quintuple-layer three dimensional (3D) topological insulator (TI) Sb2Te3 epitaxial films. As shown by spatially- and field-dependent tunneling spectra, these trapped resonances show field-induced splittings between the degenerate time-reversal-symmetric states at zero magnetic field. These behaviors are attributed unambiguously to Berry-phase switch by comparing the experimental data with both numerical and semi-classical simulations. The successful electrostatic trapping of t…
We analyze the dissipative quantum tunneling in the Caldeira-Leggett model by the nonperturbative renormalization-group method. We classify the dissipation effects by introducing the notion of effective cutoffs. We calculate the localization susceptibility to evaluate the critical dissipation for the quantum-classical transition. Our results are consistent with previous semiclassical arguments, but give considerably larger critical dissipation.
We demonstrate that flat bands with local Berry curvature arise naturally in chiral (ABC) multilayer graphene placed on a boron nitride (BN) substrate. The degree of flatness can be tuned by varying the number of graphene layers N. For N = 7 the bands become nearly flat, with a small bandwidth of 3.6 meV. The two nearly flat bands coming from the K and K' valleys cross along lines in the reduced zone. Weak intervalley tunneling turns the bandcrossing into an avoided crossing, producing two nearly flat bands with global Chern number zero, but with local Berry curvature. The flatness of the band…
In a recent work [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 108}, 136401 (2012)] we have addressed the problem of a Luttinger liquid with a scatterer that allows for both coherent and incoherent scattering channels. We have found that the physics associated with this model is qualitatively different from the elastic impurity setup analyzed by Kane and Fisher, and from the inelastic scattering scenario studied by Furusaki and Matveev, thus proposing a new paradigmatic picture of Luttinger liquid with an impurity. Here we present an extensive study of the renormalization group flows for this problem, the fixed poin…
We study a superconducting single-charge transistor, where the coherence of Cooper pair tunneling is destroyed by the coupling to a tunable dissipative environment. Sequential tunneling and cotunneling processes are analyzed to construct the shape of the conductance peaks and their dependence on the dissipation and temperature. Unexpected features are found due to a cross-over between two distinct regimes, one `environment-assisted' the other `environment-dominated'. Several of the predictions have been confirmed by recent experiments. The model and results apply also to the dynamics of Joseph…
We predict that a strong nonreciprocity in the resonance spectra of Dirac quantum dots can be induced by the Berry phase. The nonreciprocity arises in relatively weak magnetic fields and is manifest in anomalously large field-induced splittings of quantum dot resonances which are degenerate at $B=0$ due to time-reversal symmetry. This exotic behavior, which is governed by field-induced jumps in the Berry phase of confined electronic states, is unique to quantum dots in Dirac materials and is absent in conventional quantum dots. The effect is strong for gapless Dirac particles and can overwhelm…
We study the effects of the quantum geometric tensor, i.e., the Berry curvature and the Fubini-Study metric, on the steady state of driven-dissipative bosonic lattices. We show that the quantum-Hall-type response of the steady-state wave function in the presence of an external potential gradient depends on all the components of the quantum geometric tensor. Looking at this steady-state Hall response, one can map out the full quantum geometric tensor of a sufficiently flat band in momentum space using a driving field localized in momentum space. We use the two-dimensional Lieb lattice as an exa…
We consider dissipative dynamics of a flux qubit caused by 1/f noises, which act both on the shunting LC-contour and on the SQUID loop. These classical Gaussian noises modulate of the level splitting and of the tunnel coupling, respectively, and they are partially correlated. The transient evolution of qubit has been studied for the regimes: (a) the interwell incoherent tunneling, (b) the relaxation of interlevel population, and (c) the decoherence of the off-diagonal part of a density matrix. For all regimes, the relaxation rates and the frequency renormalization [for the case (c)] are analyz…
Resonant tunneling transport in polar heterostructures is intimately connected to the polarization fields emerging from the geometric Berry-phase. In these structures, quantum confinement results not only in a discrete electronic spectrum, but also in built-in polarization charges exhibiting a broken inversion symmetry along the transport direction. Thus, electrons undergo highly asymmetric quantum interference effects with respect to the direction of current flow. By employing doping to counter the broken symmetry, we deterministically control the resonant transmission through GaN/AlN resonan…
The Ueda-Guinea model of a dissipative tunnel junction is investigated. This model accounts for final state effects associated with single-electron tunneling. A quantum phase transition emerges, marking a boundary between insulating (Coulomb blockade) and conducting phases. The system is analyzed by large-N techniques, self-consistent harmonic approximation, and Monte Carlo methods.
The success of Berry phases in quantum mechanics stimulated the study of similar phenomena in other areas of physics, including the theory of living cell locomotion and motion of patterns in nonlinear media. More recently, geometric phases have been applied to systems operating in a strongly stochastic environment, such as molecular motors. We discuss such geometric effects in purely classical dissipative stochastic systems and their role in the theory of the stochastic pump effect (SPE).
We report on the effect of the frequency-locked transfer of single Cooper pairs in a superconducting single-electron Al transistor embedded in a dissipative environment (on-chip Cr resistor of R = 40 kOhm). The transistor was dc voltage biased, and the harmonic signal of frequency f of several MHz was applied to the gate. Due to the substantial rate of relaxation, the unidirectional transfer of single pairs occurred in each junction once per clock cycle and the current plateaus at I = 2ef were developed in the transistor's I-V curves. The mechanisms (supercurrent, Landau-Zener tunneling, quasi…
Since its discovery, Berry phase has been demonstrated to play an important role in many quantum systems. In gapped Bernal bilayer graphene, the Berry phase can be continuously tuned from zero to 2pi, which offers a unique opportunity to explore the tunable Berry phase on the physical phenomena. Here, we report experimental observation of Berry phases-induced valley splitting and crossing in moveable bilayer graphene p-n junction resonators. In our experiment, the bilayer graphene resonators are generated by combining the electric field of scanning tunneling microscope tip with the gap of bila…
We analyze the real-time dynamics of a quantum two-state system in the presence of nonequilibrium quantum fluctuations. The latter are generated by a coupling of the two-state system to a single electronic level of a quantum dot which carries a nonequilibrium tunneling current. We restrict to the sequential tunneling regime and calculate the dynamics of the two-state system, of the dot population, and of the nonequilibrium charge current on the basis of a diagrammatic perturbative method valid for a weak tunneling coupling. We find a nontrivial dependence of the relaxation and dephasing rates …
We present topological interference effects for the tunneling of a single large spin, which are caused by the symmetry of a general class of magnetic anisotropies. The interference originates from spin Berry phases associated with different tunneling paths exposed to the same dynamics. Introducing a generalized path integral for coherent spin states, we evaluate transition amplitudes between ground as well as low-lying excited states. We show that these interference effects lead to topological selection rules and spin-parity effects for integer spins that agree with quantum selection rules and…
The symmetry of magnetic quantum tunneling has been studied in the prototype single molecule magnet Mn$_{12}$-acetate using a micro-Hall effect magnetometer and superconducting high field vector magnet system. An average crystal fourfold symmetry is shown to be due to local molecular environments of twofold symmetry that are rotated by 90$^o$ with respect to one another, confirming that disorder which lowers the molecule symmetry is at important to magnetic quantum tunneling. We have studied a subset of these lower (twofold) site symmetry molecules and present evidence for a Berry phase effect…
We investigate low-temperature and low-voltage-bias charge transport in a superconducting Al single electron transistor in a dissipating environment, realized as on-chip high-ohmic Cr microstrips. In our samples with relatively large charging energy values Ec > EJ, where EJ is the energy of the Josephson coupling, two transport mechanisms were found to be dominating, both based on discrete tunneling of individual Cooper pairs: Depending on the gate voltage Vg, either sequential tunneling of pairs via the transistor island (in the open state of the transistor around the points Qg = CgVg = e mod…
We consider tunneling of spinless electrons from a single channel emitter into an empty collector through an interacting resonant level of the quantum dot. When all Coulomb screening of sudden charge variations of the dot during the tunneling is realized by the emitter channel, the system is described with an exactly solvable model of a dissipative qubit. We derive the correspondent Bloch equation for its quantum evolution. We further use it to specify the qubit transient dynamics towards its stationary quantum state after sudden change of the level position. We demonstrate that the time-depen…
