The average time required for an open quantum system to reach a steady state (the steady-state time) is generally determined through a competition of coherent and incoherent (dissipative) dynamics. Here, we study this competition for a ubiquitous central-spin system, corresponding to a `central' spin-1/2 coherently coupled to ancilla spins and undergoing dissipative spin relaxation. The ancilla system can describe $N$ spins-1/2 or, equivalently, a single large spin of length $I=N/2$. We find exact analytical expressions for the steady-state time in terms of the dissipation rate, resulting in a minimal (optimal) steady-state time at an optimal value of the dissipation rate, according to a universal curve. Due to a collective-enhancement effect, the optimized steady-state time grows only logarithmically with increasing $N=2I$, demonstrating that the system size can be grown substantially with only a moderate cost in steady-state time. This work has direct applications to the rapid initialization of spin qubits in quantum dots or bound to donor impurities, to dynamic nuclear-spin polarization protocols, and may provide key intuition for the benefits of error-correction protocols in quantum annealing.
Hybrid photonic-plasmonic nanostructures allow one to engineer coupling of quantum emitters and cavity modes accounting for the direct coherent and environment mediated dissipative pathways. Using generalized plasmonic Dicke model, we explore the non-equilibrium phase diagram with respect to these interactions. The analysis shows that their interplay results in the extension of the superradiant and regular lasing states to the dissipative coupling regime and an emergent lasing phase without population inversion having boundary with the superradiant and normal states. Calculated photon emission…
One-way nonreciprocal interactions between two quantum systems are typically described by a cascaded quantum master equation, and rely on an effective breaking of time-reversal symmetry as well as the balancing of coherent and dissipative interactions. Here, we present a new approach for obtaining nonreciprocal quantum interactions that is completely distinct from cascaded quantum systems, and that does not in general require broken TRS. Our method relies on a local gauge symmetry present in any Markovian Lindblad master equation. This new kind of quantum nonreciprocity has many implications, …
The interplay between an open quantum system and its environment can lead to both coherent and incoherent behaviour. We explore the extent to which strong coupling to a single bosonic mode can alter the coherence properties of a two-level system in a structured environment. This mode is treated exactly, with the rest of the environment comprising a Markovian bath of bosonic modes. The strength of the coupling between the two-level system and the single mode is varied for a variety of different forms for the bath spectral density in order to assess whether the coherent dynamics of the two-level…
Steady states reached in a coherently pumped exciton-polariton superfluid are investigated. As the pump parameter is changed, the translational symmetry of the uniform system is spontaneously broken, and various steady patterns of quantized vortices are formed. This is peculiar to nonequilibrium dissipative systems with continuous pumping.
Strong interactions between magnetic materials and electrodynamic cavities mix together spin and photon properties, producing unique hybridized behaviour. The study of such coupled spin-photon systems, known as cavity magnonics, is motivated by the flexibility and controllability of these hybridized states for spintronic and quantum information technologies. In this tutorial we examine and compare both coherent and dissipative interactions in cavity magnonics. We begin with a familiar case study, the coupled harmonic oscillator, which provides insight into the unique characteristics of coheren…
We study the interplay between charge transport and light-matter interactions in a confined geometry, by considering an open, mesoscopic chain of two-orbital systems resonantly coupled to a single bosonic mode close to its vacuum state. We introduce and benchmark different methods based on self-consistent solutions of non-equilibrium Green's functions and numerical simulations of the quantum master equation, and derive both analytical and numerical results. It is shown that in the dissipative regime where the cavity photon decay rate is the largest parameter, the light-matter coupling is respo…
The non-local coherent nature of the Majorana devices is one of the key factors for realizing decoherence-free topological qubits. Direct observation of this coherent nature could provide a first-step benchmarking scheme to validate Majorana qubit quality. We propose a simple transport scheme with a Majorana island device along with a dissipative environment in the electrodes. We found that the dissipative environment renormalizes the quantum transport in significant different ways: As reducing temperature, while the conductance for Majorana coherent teleportation increases, all other incohere…
We investigate dissipative phase transitions in an open central spin system. In our model the central spin interacts coherently with the surrounding many-particle spin environment and is subject to coherent driving and dissipation. We develop analytical tools based on a self-consistent Holstein-Primakoff approximation that enable us to determine the complete phase diagram associated with the steady states of this system. It includes first and second-order phase transitions, as well as regions of bistability, spin squeezing and altered spin pumping dynamics. Prospects of observing these phenome…
We investigate long-range coherent and dissipative coupling between two spatially separated magnets while both are coupled to a microwave cavity. A careful examination of the system shows that the indirect interaction between two magnon modes is dependent on their individual mechanisms of direct coupling to the cavity. If both magnon modes share the same form of coupling to the cavity (either coherent or dissipative), then the indirect coupling between them will produce level repulsion. Conversely, if the magnon modes have different forms of coupling to the cavity (one coherent and one dissipa…
Utilizing the non-coherent quantum transport formalism, we investigate thermoelectric performance across dissipative superlattice configurations in the linear regime of operation. Using the {\it{dissipative}} non-equilibrium Green's function formalism coupled self-consistently with the Poisson's equation, we report an enhanced figure of merit $zT$ in the multi-barrier device designs. The proposed enhancement, we show, is a result of a drastic reduction in the electronic thermal conductance triggered via non-coherent transport. We show that a maximum $zT$ value of 18 can be achieved via the inc…
The dynamics of arbitrary-order quantum correlations in a cavity magnon-polariton system are investigated based on the quantum master equation in the coherent state representation. The phenomena of Rabi-like oscillation and level repulsion of the average cavity-photon number agree remarkably well with existing experimental observations. The competing nature of coherent and incoherent components in these two cases is further revealed by the second-order quantum coherence of the cavity photons and magnons, which can be systematically tuned by the driving microwave and thermal bath. Our results d…
Double well potentials offer the possibility of coherent state preparation and therefore constitute important building blocks in the analysis of quantum information and quantum engineering devices. Here we present a study of the coherent tunneling in a parabolic double well potential in presence of different dissipative interactions. Specifically, we investigate the effects of an environmental coupling to the momentum and/or to the position of a particle in the potential. Using the semiclassical approximation to calculate instanton paths in Euclidean time, we find that momentum dissipation enh…
We consider a laser-driven and dissipative system of two coupled cavities with Jaynes-Cummings nonlinearity. In particular, we investigate both incoherent and coherent laser driving, corresponding to different experimental situations. We employ Arnoldi time evolution as a numerical tool to solve exactly the many-body master equation describing the non-equilibrium quantum system. We evaluate the fluorescence spectrum and the spectrum of the second-order correlation function of the emitted light field. Finally, we relate the measured spectra of the dissipative quantum system to excitations of th…
Maximally entangled two-qubit states (Bell states) are of central importance in quantum technologies. We show that heralded generation of a maximally entangled state of two intrinsically open qubits can be realized in a one-dimensional (1d) system through strong coherent driving and continuous monitoring. In contrast to the natural idea that dissipation leads to decoherence and so destroys quantum effects, continuous measurement and strong interference in our 1d system generate a pure state with perfect quantum correlation between the two open qubits. Though the steady state is a trivial produ…

We present the results of a series of Quantum Monte Carlo calculations of the temperature dependent conductance of dissipative non-superconducting tunnel junctions. Finite size scaling methods are used to demonstrate the absence of coherent transport in Ohmic tunnel junctions. However, a quantum phase transition between coherent and incoherent behavior is found in sub-Ohmic tunnel junctions. The critical conductance is found to be temperature independent and the critical exponents, $ν$ and $η$, are found to be in agreement with renormalization group results by Kosterlitz.
We present a new approach for deriving exact, closed-form solutions for the steady state of a wide class of driven-dissipative nonlinear resonators that is distinct from more common positive-$P$ function methods. Our method generalizes the coherent quantum absorber approach of Stannigel et al. to include nonlinear driving and dissipation, and relies crucially on exploiting the Segal-Bargmann representation of Fock space. Our solutions and method reveal a wealth of previously unexplored observable phenomena in these systems, including new generalized photon-blockade and anti-blockade effects, a…
We present the non-equilibrium phase diagram of a model which can demonstrate both Dicke--Hepp--Lieb superradiance and regular lasing by varying the coherent and incoherent driving terms. We find that the regions in the phase diagram corresponding to superradiance and standard lasing are always separated by a normal region. We analyse the behaviour of the system using a combination of exact numerics based on permutation symmetry of the density matrix for small to intermediate numbers of molecules, and second order cumulant equations for large numbers of molecules. We find that the nature of th…
We study nonlinear dynamics of exciton-polaritons in an incoherently pumped semiconductor microcavity with embedded weak-contrast lattice and coupled to an exciton reservoir. We elucidate fundamental features of non-equilibrium exciton-polariton condensate trapped in one-dimensional periodical potential close to zero momentum (so-called "Zero-state") and to the state at the boundary of Brillouin zone ("$π$-state"). Within the framework of the mean-field theory, we identify different regimes of both relaxation and oscillatory dynamics of coherent exciton-polaritons governed by superpositions of…
The key feature of a quantum spin coupled to a harmonic bath---a model dissipative quantum system---is competition between oscillator potential energy and spin tunneling rate. We show that these opposing tendencies cause environmental entanglement through superpositions of adiabatic and antiadiabatic oscillator states, which then stabilizes the spin coherence against strong dissipation. This insight motivates a fast-converging variational coherent-state expansion for the many-body ground state of the spin-boson model, which we substantiate via numerical quantum tomography.
Plasmonic nanoparticles hold great promise as photon handling elements and as channels for coherent transfer of energy and information in future all-optical computing devices. Coherent energy oscillations between two spatially separated plasmonic entities via a virtual middle state exemplify electron-based population transfer, but their realization requires precise nanoscale positioning of heterogeneous particles. Here, we show the assembly and optical analysis of a triple particle system consisting of two gold nanoparticles with an inter-spaced silver island. We observe strong plasmonic coupl…
Following Feynman and as elaborated on by Lloyd, a universal quantum simulator (QS) is a controlled quantum device which reproduces the dynamics of any other many particle quantum system with short range interactions. This dynamics can refer to both coherent Hamiltonian and dissipative open system evolution. We investigate how laser excited Rydberg atoms in large spacing optical or magnetic lattices can provide an efficient implementation of a universal QS for spin models involving (high order) n-body interactions. This includes the simulation of Hamiltonians of exotic spin models involving n-…
The emerging level attraction from dissipative light-matter coupling converges the typical Rabi-splitting feature from coherent coupling and exhibits potentials in topological information processing. However, the underlying microscopic quantum mechanism of dissipative coupling still remains unclear, which brings difficulties in quantifying and manipulating coherence-dissipation competition and thereby the flexible control of level attraction. Here, by coupling magnon to a cavity supporting both standing and travelling waves, we identify the travelling-wave state to be responsible for magnon-ph…
We consider a photonic lattice of nonlinear lossy resonators subjected to a coherent drive, where the system remembers its topological phase. Initially, the system is topologically trivial. After the application of an additional coherent pulse, the intensity is increased, which modifies the couplings in the system and then induce a topological phase transition. However, when the effect of the pulse dies out, the system does not go back to the trivial phase. Instead, it remembers the topological phase and maintains its topology acquired during the pulse application. The pulse can be used as a s…
We analyze the entanglement properties of spins (qubits) close to the boundary of spin chains in the vicinity of a quantum critical point and show that the concurrence at the boundary is significantly different from the one of bulk spins. We also discuss the von Neumann entropy of dissipative environments in the vicinity of a (boundary) critical point, such as two Ising-coupled Kondo-impurities or the dissipative two-level system. Our results indicate that the entanglement (concurrence and/or von Neumann entropy) changes abruptly at the point where coherent quantum oscillations cease to exist.…
We study particle current in a recently proposed model for coherent quantum transport. In this model a system connected to mesoscopic Fermi reservoirs (meso-reservoir) is driven out of equilibrium by the action of super reservoirs thermalized to prescribed temperatures and chemical potentials by a simple dissipative mechanism described by the Lindblad equation. We compare exact (numerical) results with theoretical expectations based on the Landauer formula
We study the driven-dissipative steady-state of a coherently-driven Bose field in a honeycomb lattice geometry. In the presence of a suitable spatial modulation of the hopping amplitudes, a valley-dependent artificial magnetic field appears and the low-energy eigenmodes have the form of relativistic Landau levels. We show how the main properties of the Landau levels can be extracted by observing the peaks in the absorption spectrum of the system and the corresponding spatial intensity distribution. Finally, quantitative predictions for realistic lattices based on photonic or microwave technolo…
