We analyze truncation of coherent states up to a single-photon Fock state by applying linear quantum scissors, utilizing the projection synthesis in a linear optical system, and nonlinear quantum scissors, implemented by periodically driven cavity with a Kerr medium. Dissipation effects on optical truncation are studied in the Langevin and master equation approaches. Formulas for the fidelity of lossy quantum scissors are found.
We present a simulation method allowing for modeling of quantum dynamics of nonlinear quantum scissors' (NQS) systems. We concentrate on the two-mode model involving two mutually interacting nonlinear quantum oscillators (Kerr nonlinear coupler) excited by a series of ultra-short external coherent pulses. We show that despite the simplicity of the method one can obtain non-trivial results. In particular, we discuss and compare two cases of kicked nonlinear coupler, showing that the quantum evolution of the system remains closed within a two-qubit Hilbert space and can lead to maximally entangl…
We consider a nonlinear coupler with two Kerr-like oscillators mutually coupled by continuous linear interaction and excited by a series of ultra-short external pulses. We show that the system behaves as nonlinear quantum scissors. It evolves such a way that it can be treated as qubit-qubit system. We derive analytic formulas for the probabilities of the states involved in the system's evolution and show that they differ from those already discussed in the literature and corresponding to the continuously excited models. Moreover, for model discussed here, maximally entangled Bell states can be…
We discuss the coupler system of two nonlinear oscillators excited by an external coherent field prepared in a maximally entangled state (Bell-like state). We show that as a result of the coupler interaction of the system with external broadband squeezed vacuum bath, entanglement decay dynamics can be considerably affected. Besides the phenomena of sudden entanglement death and its rebirth, a shortening (or lengthening) of the total disentanglement time τD can be observed, depending on the squeezing parameters. Moreover, on the example of one of the reborn entanglement cases it is shown that b…
This work discusses quantum states defined in a finite-dimensional Hilbert space. In particular, after the presentation of some of them and their basic properties the work concentrates on the group of the quantum optical models that can be referred to as \textit{quantum optical scissors}. Such "devices" can generate on their outputs states that are finite-dimensional, and simultaneously use for such preparation quantum states that are defined in the infinity-dimensional space. The work concentrates on two groups of models: the first one, comprising linear elements and the second one -- models …
We propose an alternative scheme to generate W state via optical state truncation using quantum scissors. In particular, these states may be generated through three-mode optical state truncation in a Kerr nonlinear coupler. The more general three-qubit state may be also produced if the system is driven by external classical fields.
We discuss a model comprising two coupled nonlinear oscillators (Kerr-like nonlinear coupler) with one of them pumped by an external coherent excitation. Applying the method of nonlinear quantum scissors we show that the quantum evolution of the coupler can be closed within a finite set of n-photon Fock states. Moreover, we show that the system is able to generate Bell-like states and, as a consequence, the coupler discussed behaves as a two-qubit system. We also analyze the effects of dissipation on entanglement of formation parametrized by concurrence.
Conventional Glauber coherent states (CS) can be defined in several equivalent ways, e.g., by displacing the vacuum or, explicitly, by their infinite Poissonian expansion in Fock states. It is well known that these definitions become inequivalent if applied to finite $d$-level systems (qudits). We present a comparative Wigner-function description of the qudit CS defined (i) by the action of the truncated displacement operator on the vacuum and (ii) by the Poissonian expansion in Fock states of the Glauber CS truncated at $(d-1)$-photon Fock state. These states can be generated from a classical…
We discuss a model comprised of a chain of three Kerr-like nonlinear oscillators pumped by two modes of external coherent field. We show that the system can be treated as nonlinear quantum scissors and behave as a three-qubit model. For such situation, different types of tripartite entangled states can be generated, even when damping effects are present in the system. Some amount of such entanglement can survive even in a long-time limit. The flow of bipartite entanglement between subsystems of the model and relations among first-order correlations, second-order correlations, and the entanglem…
We demonstrate that it is possible to compensate for effects of strong linear loss when generating non-classical states by engineered nonlinear dissipation. We show that it is always possible to construct such a loss-resistant dissipative gadget in which, for a certain class of initial states, the desired non-classical pure state can be attained within a particular time interval with an arbitrary precision. Further we demonstrate that an arbitrarily large linear loss can still be compensated by a sufficiently strong coherent or even thermal driving, thus attaining a strongly non-classical (in …
Schemes for optical-state truncation of two cavity modes are analysed. The systems, referred to as the nonlinear quantum scissors devices, comprise two coupled nonlinear oscillators (Kerr nonlinear coupler) with one or two of them pumped by external classical fields. It is shown that the quantum evolution of the pumped couplers can be closed in a two-qubit Hilbert space spanned by vacuum and single-photon states only. Thus, the pumped couplers can behave as a two-qubit system. Analysis of time evolution of the quantum entanglement shows that Bell states can be generated. A possible implementat…
We investigate the nonlinear interaction between two photons in a single input pulse at an atomic two level nonlinearity. A one dimensional model for the propagation of light to and from the atom is used to describe the precise spatiotemporal coherence of the two photon state. It is shown that the interaction generates spatiotemporal entanglement in the output state similar to the entanglement observed in parametric downconversion. A method of generating photon pairs from coherent pump light using this quantum mechanical four wave mixing process is proposed.
In recent years, material-induced noise arising from defects has emerged as an impediment to quantum-limited measurement in systems ranging from microwave qubits to gravity wave interferometers. As experimental systems push to ever smaller dimensions, extrinsic system properties can affect its internal material dynamics. In this paper, we identify surprising new regimes of material physics (defect-phonon and defect-defect dynamics) that are produced by dimensional confinement. Our models show that a range of tell-tale signatures, encoded in the characteristics of defect-induced noise, dissipat…
The quantum dynamics of two weakly coupled nonlinear oscillators is analytically and numerically investigated in the context of nonlinear dissipation. The latter facilitates the creation and preservation of non-classical steady states. Starting from a microscopic description of two oscillators individually interacting with their dissipative environments, it is found that in addition to energy relaxation, dephasing arises due to the mutual coupling. Using the negativity as an entanglement measure, it is shown that the coupling entangles the oscillators in the long-time limit. For finite tempera…
Stabilization of quantum manifolds is at the heart of error-protected quantum information storage and manipulation. Nonlinear driven-dissipative processes achieve such stabilization in a hardware efficient manner. Josephson circuits with parametric pump drives implement these nonlinear interactions. In this article, we propose a scheme to engineer a four-photon drive and dissipation on a harmonic oscillator by cascading experimentally demonstrated two-photon processes. This would stabilize a four-dimensional degenerate manifold in a superconducting resonator. We analyze the performance of the …
Photons in a nonlinear medium can repel or attract each other, resulting in a strongly correlated quantum many-body system. Typically, such strongly correlated states of light arise from the extreme nonlinearity granted by quantum emitters that are strongly coupled to a photonic mode. However, in these approaches, unavoidable dissipation, like photon loss, blurs nonlinear quantum effects. Here, we generate strongly correlated photon states using only weak coupling and taking advantage of dissipation. We launch light through an ensemble of non-interacting waveguide-coupled atoms, which induce c…
Accurate and efficient simulation on quantum dissipation with nonlinear environment couplings remains nowadays a challenging task. In this work, we propose to incorporate the stochastic fields, which resolve just the nonlinear environment coupling terms, into the dissipaton-equation-of-motion (DEOM) construction. The stochastic fields are introduced via the Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation. After the transformation, the resulted stochastic-fields-dressed total Hamiltonian contains only linear environment coupling terms. On basis of that, a stochastic-fields-dressed DEOM (SFD-DEOM) can then …
We show that controlled dissipation can be used as a tool for exploring fundamental phenomena and managing mesoscopic systems of cold atoms and Bose-Einstein condensates. Even the simplest boson-Josephson junction, that is, a Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well trap, subjected to removal of atoms from one of the two potential minima allows one to observe such phenomena as the suppression of losses and the nonlinear Zeno effect. In such a system the controlled dissipation can be used to create desired macroscopic states and implement controlled switching among different quantum regimes.
The Brownian motion of a single particle is a paradigmatic model of the nonequilibrium dynamics of dissipative systems. In the system-plus-reservoir approach, one can derive the particle's equations of motion from the reversible dynamics of the system coupled to a bath of oscillators representing its thermal environment. However, extending the system-plus-reservoir approach to multiple particles in a collective environment is not straightforward, and conflicting models have been proposed to that end. Here, we set out to reconcile some aspects of the nonlinear and the bilinear models of two Bro…
We study dissipative phase transition near the critical point for a system with two-photon driving and nonlinear dissipation. The proposed mean-field theory, which explicitly takes into account quantum fluctuations, allowed us to describe properly the evolution dynamics of the system and to demonstrate the new effects in the steady-state. We show that the presence of quantum fluctuations leads to a power-law dependence of the anomalous average at the phase transition point, with which the critical exponent is associated. Also, we investigate the effect of the quantum fluctuations on the critic…
Quantum optical fields offer numerous control knobs which are not available with classical light and may be used for monitoring the properties of matter by novel types of spectroscopy. It has been recently argued that such quantum spectroscopy signals can be obtained by a simple averaging of their classical spectroscopy counterparts over the Glauber-Sudarshan quasiprobability distribution of the quantum field; the quantum light thus merely provides a novel gating window for the classical response functions. We show that this argument only applies to the linear response and breaks down in the n…
We present a new quantum-limited Josephson-junction-based 3-wave-mixing parametric amplifier, the SNAIL Parametric Amplifier (SPA), which uses an array of SNAILs (Superconducting Nonlinear Asymmetric Inductive eLements) as the source of tunable nonlinearity. We show how to engineer the nonlinearity over multiple orders of magnitude by varying the physical design of the device. As a function of design parameters, we systematically explore two important amplifier nonidealities that limit dynamic range: the phenomena of gain compression and intermodulation distortion, whose minimization are cruci…
We investigate the nonlinear dissipative coherence bifurcation and population dynamics of a two-component atomic Bose-Einstein condensate coupling with a continuum. The coupling between the two-component condensates and the continuum brings effective dissipations to the two-component condensates. The steady states and the coherence bifurcation depend on both dissipation and the nonlinear interaction between condensed atoms. The coherence among condensed atoms may be even enhanced by the effective dissipations. The combination of dissipation and nonlinearity allows one to control the switching …
A system of $N$ spin-1/2 particles interacting with a thermal reservoir is used as a pedagogical example for advanced undergraduate and graduate students. We introduce and illustrate some methods, approximations, and phenomena related to dissipation and nonlinearity in many-particle physics. We start our analysis from the dynamical Sudarshan-Lindblad quantum master equation for the density operator of a system $\mathcal{S}$ interacting with a thermal reservoir $\mathcal{R}$. We derive the quantum version of the so-called Bogoliubov-Born-Green-Kirkwood-Yvon (BBGKY) equations such that the maste…
We study the open system dynamics of a heavy quark in the quark-gluon plasma using a Lindblad master equation. Applying the quantum state diffusion approach by Gisin and Percival, we derive and numerically solve a nonlinear stochastic Schrödinger equation for wave functions, which is equivalent to the Lindblad master equation for the density matrix. From our numerical analysis in one spatial dimension, it is shown that the density matrix relaxes to the Boltzmann distribution in various setups (with and without external potentials), independently of the initial conditions. We also confirm that …
Continuing our inquiry into the conditions when fluctuation-dissipation relations (FDR) may appear in the context of nonequilibrium dynamics of open quantum systems (over and beyond the conventional FDR from linear response theory) we turn to nonGaussian systems and consider this issue for an anharmonic oscillator interacting with a scalar quantum field bath. We present the general {nonperturbative} expressions for the rate of energy (power) exchange between the anharmonic oscillator and the thermal bath. For the cases that a stable final equilibrium state exists, and the nonstationary compone…
We demonstrate the existence of extremely weakly decaying linear and nonlinear modes (i.e. modes immune to dissipation) in the one-dimensional periodic array of identical spatially localized dissipations, where the dissipation width is much smaller than the period of the array. We consider wave propagation governed by the one-dimensional Schrödinger equation in the array of identical Gaussian-shaped dissipations with three parameters, the integral dissipation strength $Γ_0$, the width $σ$ and the array period $d$. In the linear case, setting $σ\to0$, while keeping $Γ_0$ fixed, we get an array …
We calculate the radiation noise level associated with the spontaneous emission of a coherently driven medium. The significant field-induced modification of relation between the noise power and damping constant in a thermal reservoir is obtained. The nonlinear noise exchange between different atomic frequencies leads to violation of standard relations dictated by the fluctuation-dissipation theorem.
We propose a single photon source based on a pair of weakly nonlinear optical cavities subject to a one-directional dissipative coupling. When both cavities are driven by mutually coherent fields, sub-poissonian light is generated in the target cavity even when the nonlinear energy per photon is much smaller than the dissipation rate. The sub-poissonian character of the field holds over a delay measured by the inverse photon lifetime, as in the conventional photon blockade, thus allowing single-photon emission under pulsed excitation. We discuss a possible implementation of the dissipative cou…
