Data traffic demand in cellular networks has been tremendously growing and has led to creating congested RF environment. Accordingly, innovative approaches for spectrum sharing have been proposed and implemented to accommodate several systems within the same frequency band. Spectrum sharing between radar and communication systems is one of the important research and development areas. In this paper, we present the fundamental spectrum sharing concepts and technologies, then we provide an updated and comprehensive survey of spectrum sharing techniques that have been developed to enable some of the wireless communication systems to coexist in the same band as radar systems.
The wide bandwidths available at millimeter-wave (mmWave) frequencies have offered exciting potential to wireless communication systems and radar alike. Communication systems can offer higher rates and support more users with mmWave bands while radar systems can benefit from higher resolution captures. This leads to the possibility that portions of mmWave spectrum will be occupied by both communication and radar (e.g., 60 GHz industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) band). This potential coexistence motivates the work of this paper, in which we present a design that can enable simultaneous, i…
In this study, a novel transmission scheme is proposed to serve radar-sensing and communication objectives at the same time and allocated bandwidth. The proposed transmitted frame non-orthogonally superimposes two different waveforms, which are frequency modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) for radar-sensing and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) for communication. Also, the receiver scheme that performs channel estimation via radar-sensing functionality without degrading data rate of communication operation is introduced. As numerically evaluated, the proposed system achieves good …
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are expected to be used extensively in the future for various applications, either as user equipment (UEs) connected to a cellular wireless network, or as an infrastructure extension of an existing wireless network to serve other UEs. Next generation wireless networks will consider the use of UAVs for joint communication and radar and/or as dedicated radars for various sensing applications. Increasing number of UAVs will naturally result in larger number of communication and/or radar links that may cause interference to nearby networks, exacerbated further by th…
This work addresses the coexistence problem for radar networks. Specifically, we model a network of cooperative, independent, and non-communicating radar nodes which must share resources within the network as well as with non-cooperative nearby emitters. We approach this problem using online Machine Learning (ML) techniques. Online learning approaches are specifically preferred due to the fact that each radar node has no prior knowledge of the environment nor of the positions of the other radar nodes, and due to the sequential nature of the problem. For this task we specifically select the mul…
In this work, the feasibility of spectrum sharing between a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar system (RS) and a MIMO cellular system (CS), comprising of a full duplex (FD) base station (BS) serving multiple downlink and uplink users at the same time and frequency is investigated. While a joint transceiver design technique at the CS's BS and users is proposed to maximise the probability of detection (PoD) of the MIMO RS, subject to constraints of quality of service (QoS) of users and transmit power at the CS, null-space based waveform projection is used to mitigate the interference fr…
This paper considers an underlay pulsed radar-cellular spectrum sharing scenario, where the cellular system uses pilot-aided demodulation, statistical channel state information (S-CSI) estimation and limited feedback schemes. Under a realistic system model, upper and lower bounds are derived on the probability that at least a specified number of pilot signals are interfered by a radar pulse train in a finite CSI estimation window. Exact probabilities are also derived for important special cases which reveal operational regimes where the lower bound is achieved. Using these results, this paper …

However, the mutual interference in the communication radar coexistence system cannot be ignored. Inspired by the studies of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), we propose a double-RIS-assisted coexistence system where two RISs are deployed for enhancing communication signals and suppressing mutual interference. We aim to jointly optimize the beamforming of RISs and radar to maximize communication performance while maintaining radar detection perform…

This paper studies the physical layer security in a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) dual-functional radar-communication (DFRC) system, which communicates with downlink cellular users and tracks radar targets simultaneously. Here, the radar targets are considered as potential eavesdroppers which might eavesdrop the information from the communication transmitter to legitimate users. To ensure the transmission secrecy, we employ artificial noise (AN) at the transmitter and formulate optimization problems by minimizing the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) received at radar targ…
Current cellular systems use pilot-aided statistical-channel state information (S-CSI) estimation and limited feedback schemes to aid in link adaptation and scheduling decisions. However, in the presence of pulsed radar signals, pilot-aided S-CSI is inaccurate since interference statistics on pilot and non-pilot resources can be different. Moreover, the channel will be bimodal as a result of the periodic interference. In this paper, we propose a max-min heuristic to estimate the post-equalizer SINR in the case of non-pilot pulsed radar interference, and characterize its distribution as a funct…

Under communications quality-of-service (QoS) constraints, the joint performance region of communications sum rate and radar estimation error variance is studied. Two radar signal waveforms, namely linear FM and parabolic FM, are used to investigate how signal shapes may influence the estimation accuracy. Both waveforms are generated with rectangular envelope. In the end, a numerical an…
An integrated radar and communications system (IRCS) where a monostatic radar transceiver is employed for target classification while simultaneously used as a communications transmitter is considered. The radar combined propagation-target response (joint response of the radar propagation channel and target) and communications channel response are generally frequency selective but the corresponding frequency response functions are not exactly known. In particular, these frequency response functions are only known to lie in an uncertainty class. To ensure the IRCS simultaneously provides accepta…

Frequency-hopping (FH) MIMO radar-based dual-function radar communication (FH-MIMO DFRC) enables communication symbol rate to exceed radar pulse repetition frequency, which requires accurate estimations of timing offset and channel parameters. The estimations, however, are challenging due to unknown, fast-changing hopping frequencies and the multiplicative coupling between timing offset and channel parameters. In this paper, we develop accurate methods for a single-antenna communication receiver to estimate timing offset and channel for FH-MIMO DFRC. First, we design a novel FH-MIMO radar wave…
Complex ADMM-Net, a complex-valued neural network architecture inspired by the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM), is designed for interference removal in super-resolution stepped frequency radar angle-range-doppler imaging. Tailored to an uncooperative scenario wherein a MIMO radar shares spectrum with communications, the ADMM-Net recovers the radar image---which is assumed to be sparse---and simultaneously removes the communication interference, which is modeled as sparse in the frequency domain owing to spectrum underutilization. The scenario motivates an $\ell_1$-minimizati…

Rapid beam alignment is required to support high gain millimeter wave (mmW) communication links between a base station (BS) and mobile users (MU). The standard IEEE 802.11ad protocol enables beam alignment at the BS and MU through a lengthy beam training procedure accomplished through additional packet overhead. However, this results in reduced latency and throughput. Auxiliary radar functionality embedded within the communication protocol has been proposed in prior literature to enable rapid beam alignment of communication beams without the requirement of channel overheads. In this work, we p…
In this paper, power allocation is examined for the coexistence of a radar and a communication system that employ multicarrier waveforms. The first is a joint design where the subchannel powers of both the radar and communication systems are jointly optimized. Since the resulting problem is highly nonconvex, we introduce a reformulation by combining the power var…

Thus, avoiding the interference from communication users is an important and challenging task for the application of multi-carrier radar. In this paper, a novel frequency allocation strategy based on the historical experiences is proposed, which is formulated as a Markov decision process (MDP). In a decision step, the multi-carrier radar needs to choose more than one…
