We present linear polarization-dependent soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy data at the Ce $M_{4,5}$ edges of Cd and Sn doped CeCoIn$_5$. The 4$f$ ground state wave functions have been determined for their superconducting, antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic ground states. The absence of changes in the wave functions in CeCo(In$_{1-x}$Cd$_x$)$_5$ suggests the 4$f$\,--\,conduction electron ($cf$) hybridization is not affected by globally Cd doping, thus supporting the interpretation of magnetic droplets nucleating long range magnetic order. This is contrasted by changes in the wave function due to Sn substitution. Increasing Sn in CeCo(In$_{1-y}$Sn$_y$)$_5$ compresses the 4$f$ orbitals into the tetragonal plane of these materials, suggesting enhanced $cf$ hybridization with the in-plane In(1) atoms and a homogeneous altering of the electronic structure. As these experiments show, the 4$f$ wave functions are a very sensitive probe of small changes in the hybridization of 4$f$ and conduction electrons, even conveying information about direction dependencies.
We investigated the effect of Cd and Hg doping on the first order superconducting (SC) transition and the high field-low temperature SC state of CeCoIn$_5$ by measuring the specific heat of CeCo(In$_{\rm 1-x}$Cd$_{\rm x}$)$_5$ with x=0.0011, 0.0022 and 0.0033 and CeCo(In$_{\rm 1-x}$Hg$_{\rm x}$)$_5$ with x=0.00016, 0.00032, and 0.00048 at temperatures down to 0.1 K and fields up to 14 T. Cd substitution rapidly suppresses the cross-over temperature $T_{\rm 0}$, where the superconducting transition changes from second to first order, to $T$=0 K with x=0.0022 for $H\parallel$ [100], while it rem…
We report the results of de-Haas-van-Alphen (dHvA) measurements in Cd doped CeCoIn$_5$ and LaCoIn$_5$. Cd doping is known to induce an antiferromagnetic order in the heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn$_5$, whose effect can be reversed with applied pressure. We find a slight but systematic change of the dHvA frequencies with Cd doping in both compounds, reflecting the chemical potential shift due to the addition of holes. The frequencies and effective masses are close to those found in the nominally pure compounds with similar changes apparent in the Ce and La compounds with Cd substitution. W…
We investigated the effect of electron and hole doping on the high-field low-temperature superconducting state in CeCoIn$_5$ by measuring specific heat of CeCo(In$_{\rm 1-x}$M$_{\rm x}$)$_5$ with M=Sn, Cd and Hg and $x$ up to 0.33% at temperatures down to 0.1\,K and fields up to 14\,T. Although both Cd- and Hg-doping (hole-doping) suppresses the zero-field $T_c$ monotonically, $H_{c2}$ increases with small amounts of doping and has a maximum around $x$=0.2% (M=Cd). On the other hand, with Sn-doping (electron-doping) both zero-field $T_c$ and $H_{c2}$ decrease monotonically. The critical temper…
The heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn_5 can be tuned between superconducting and antiferromagnetic ground states by hole doping with Cd. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) data indicate that these two orders coexist microscopically with an ordered moment ~0.7 μ_B. As the ground state evolves, there is no change in the low frequency spin dynamics in the disordered state. These results suggest that the magnetism emerges locally in the vicinity of the Cd dopants.
We report a globally reversible effect of electronic tuning on the magnetic phase diagram in CeCoIn_{5} driven by electron (Pt and Sn) and hole (Cd, Hg) doping. Consequently, we are able to extract the superconducting pair breaking component for hole and electron dopants with pressure and co-doping studies, respectively. We find that these nominally non-magnetic dopants have a remarkably weak pair breaking effect for a d-wave superconductor. The pair breaking is weaker for hole dopants, which induce magnetic moments, than for electron dopants. Furthermore, both Pt and Sn doping have a similar …
We have investigated the effect of Yb substitution on the Pauli limited, heavy fermion superconductor, CeCoIn$_5$. Yb acts as a non-magnetic divalent substituent for Ce throughout the entire doping range, equivalent to hole doping on the rare earth site. We found that the upper critical field in (Ce,Yb)CoIn$_5$ is Pauli limited, yet the reduced (H,T) phase diagram is insensitive to disorder, as expected in the purely orbitally limited case. We use the Pauli limiting field, the superconducting condensation energy and the electronic specific heat coefficient to determine the Wilson ratio ($R_{W}…
Cadmium-doping the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn$_5$ at the percent level acts as an electronic tuning agent, sensitively shifting the balance between superconductivity and antiferromagnetism and opening new ambient-pressure phase space in the study of heavy-fermion ground states.
We study the dopant-induced inhomogeneity effect on the electronic properties of heavy fermionCeCoIn5using a combined approach of density functional theory (DFT) and dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). The inhomogeneity of the hybridization between Ce-4fand conduction electrons is introduced to impose the inequivalent Ce atoms with respect to the dopant. From the DFT to the DFT+DMFT results, we demonstrate a variation of the hybridization strength depending on the hole or electron doping. A drastic asymmetric mass renormalization could be reproduced in the DFT+DMFT calculation. Finally, the ca…
We performed low-temperature de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect measurements on a Ce$_{1-x}$Nd$_x$CoIn$_5$ series, for x = 0.02, 0.05, 0.1, and 1, down to T = 40 mK using torque magnetometry in magnetic felds up to 35 T. Our results indicate that a Fermi-surface (FS) reconstruction occurs from a quasi-two-dimensional (2D) topology for Nd-2% to a rather three-dimensional (3D) for Nd-5%, thus reducing the possibility of perfect FS nesting. The FS evolves further with increasing Nd content with no observed divergence of the effective mass between Nd-2% and 10%, consistent with the crossing of a spi…
We have succeeded in growing single crystals of the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCo(In1-xZnx)5 with x<=0.07. Measurements of specific heat, electrical resistivity, dc magnetization and ac susceptibility revealed that the superconducting (SC) transition temperature Tc decreases from 2.25 K (x=0) to 1.8 K (x=0.05) by doping Zn into CeCoIn5. Furthermore, these measurements indicate a development of a new ordered phase below T_o ~ 2.2 K for x=>0.05, characterized by the reduced magnetization and electrical resistivity in the ordered phase, and the enhancement of specific heat at T_o. This phase …
We report the evolution of the spin resonance in CeCoIn$_{5}$ as a function of magnetic field and lanthanum substitution. In both cases, the resonance peak position shifts to lower energy and the lineshape broadens. For La doping, it is found that the ratio $Ω_{res}/k_{B}T_{c}$ is almost constant as a function of $x$. Under magnetic field the decrease of the excitation energy is similar for H// [1,$\bar{1}$,0] and [1,1,1] and faster than the decrease of $T_{c}(H)$. The Zeeman effect found for the field applied along [1,$\bar{1}$,0] corresponds to the ground state magnetic moment.
Inelastic electron scattering is applied to investigate the impact of potassium intercalation on the charge carrier plasmon energy and dispersion in the charge-density wave (CDW) bearing compound 2H-tantalum-diselenide. We observe an unususal doping dependence of the plasmon dispersion, which even changes sign upon alkali addition. In contrast to the continous energy shift of the plasmon position upon doping at lowest momentum transfer, its dispersion changes in a rather discontinuous manner. We argue that the observed dynamics can only be explained in a picture, where complex phenomena are ta…
We present the discovery and refinement by neutron powder diffraction of a new magnetic phase in the Na1-xCaxMn7O12 quadruple perovskite phase diagram, which is the incommensurate analogue of the well-known pseudo-CE phase of the simple perovskite manganites. We demonstrate that incommensurate magnetic order arises in quadruple perovskites due to the exchange interactions between A and B sites. Furthermore, by constructing a simple mean field Heisenberg exchange model that generically describes both simple and quadruple perovskite systems, we show that this new magnetic phase unifies a picture…
We present a theoretical investigation of the effects of correlations on the electronic structure of the Mott insulator Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ upon electron doping. A rapid collapse of the Mott gap upon doping is found, and the electronic structure displays a strong momentum-space differentiation at low doping level: The Fermi surface consists of pockets centered around $(π/2,π/2)$, while a pseudogap opens near $(π,0)$. Its physical origin is shown to be related to short-range spin correlations. The pseudogap closes upon increasing doping, but a differentiated regime characterized by a modulation of th…
In heavy-fermion superconductor Ce$_{1-x}$Yb$_x$CoIn$_5$ system, Yb doping was reported to cause a possible change from nodal $d$-wave superconductivity to a fully gapped $d$-wave molecular superfluid of composite pairs near $x \approx$ 0.07 (nominal value $x_{nom}$ = 0.2). Here we present systematic thermal conductivity measurements on Ce$_{1-x}$Yb$_x$CoIn$_5$ ($x$ = 0.013, 0.084, and 0.163) single crystals. The observed finite residual linear term $κ_0/T$ is insensitive to Yb doping, verifying the universal heat conduction of nodal $d$-wave superconducting gap in Ce$_{1-x}$Yb$_x$CoIn$_5$. Si…
In conventional BCS superconductors, the electronic kinetic energy increases upon superfluid condensation (the change DEkin is positive). Here we show that in the high critical temperature superconductor Bi-2212, DEkin crosses over from a fully compatible conventional BCS behavior (DEkin>0) to an unconventional behavior (DEkin<0) as the free carrier density decreases. If a single mechanism is responsible for superconductivity across the whole phase diagram of high critical temperature superconductors, this mechanism should allow for a smooth transition between such two regimes around optimal d…
We study the effects of doping the Kitaev model on the honeycomb lattice where the spins interact via the bond-directional interaction $J_K$, which is known to have a quantum spin liquid as its exact ground state. The effect of hole doping is studied within the $t$-$J_K$ model on a three-leg cylinder using density-matrix renormalization group. Upon light doping, we find that the ground state of the system has quasi-long-range charge-density-wave correlations but short-range single-particle correlations. The dominant pairing channel is the even-parity superconducting pair-pair correlations with…
We investigate the doping of AA-stacked graphene bilayers. Applying a mean field theory at zero temperature we find that, at half-filling, the bilayer is an antiferromagnetic insulator. Upon doping, the homogeneous phase becomes unstable with respect to phase separation. The separated phases are an undoped antiferromagnetic insulator and a metal with a non-zero concentration of charge carriers. At sufficiently high doping, the insulating areas shrink and disappear, and the system becomes a homogeneous metal. The conductivity changes drastically upon doping, so the bilayer may be used as a swit…
CeB(6) is a model compound exhibiting antiferroquadrupolar (AFQ) order, its magnetic properties being typically interpreted within localized models. More recently, the observation of strong and sharp magnetic exciton modes forming in its antiferromagnetic (AFM) state at both ferromagnetic and AFQ wave vectors suggested a significant contribution of itinerant electrons to the spin dynamics. Here we investigate the evolution of the AFQ excitation upon the application of an external magnetic field and the substitution of Ce with non-magnetic La, both parameters known to suppress the AFM phase. We…
We report systematic Angle Resolved Photoemission (ARPES) experiments using different photon polarizations and experimental geometries and find that the doping evolution of the normal state of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 deviates significantly from the predictions of a rigid band model. The data reveal a non-monotonic dependence upon doping of key quantities such as band filling, bandwidth of the electron pocket, and quasiparticle coherence. Our analysis suggests that the observed phenomenology and the inapplicability of the rigid band model in Co-doped Ba122 are due to electronic correlations, and not t…
The layered 5d transition metal oxide Sr2IrO4 has been shown to host a novel Jeff=1/2 Mott spin orbit insulating state with antiferromagnetic ordering, leading to comparisons with the layered cuprates. Here we study the effect of substituting Mn for Ir in single crystals of Sr2Ir0.9Mn0.1O4 through an investigation involving bulk measurements and resonant x-ray and neutron scattering. We observe a new long range magnetic structure emerge upon doping through a reordering of the spins from the basal plane to the c-axis with a reduced ordering temperature compared to Sr2IrO4. The strong enhancemen…
The oxygen-deficient perovskite cobaltite SrCo1-xNbxO3-d was synthesized by direct solid-state reaction and its magnetotransport properties were investigated. This cobaltite exhibits an unusual ferromagnetic behavior with a transition temperature Tm = 130-150 K and a spin glass like behavior below Tm. Importantly, this phase reaches a large magnetoresistance (MR) value, MR = -(rH - r0) / r0 = 30% at 5 K in 7 T. The large MR effect is believed to be related to the disordered magnetic state induced by the Nb-for-Co substitution.
Motivated by the recent discovery of superconductivity in the infinite-layer (Sr,Nd)NiO$_2$ films with Sr content $x \simeq0.2$ [Li et al., Nature (London) \textbf{572}, 624 (2019)], we examine the effects of electron correlations and Sr-doping on the electronic structure, Fermi surface topology, and magnetic correlations in (Nd,Sr)NiO$_2$ using a combination of dynamical mean-field theory of correlated electrons and band-structure methods. Our results reveal a remarkable orbital selective renormalization of the Ni $3d$ bands, with $m$*/$m\sim 3$ and 1.3 for the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ and $d_{3z^2-r^2}…
The spin gap evolution upon Ca doping in Sr14-xCaxCu24O41 was systematically investigated using inelastic neutron scattering. We discover that the singlet-triplet spin gap excitation survives in this series with x up to 13, indicating the singlet dimer ground state in these compounds. This observation corrects the previous speculation that the spin gap collapses at x~13 by the NMR technique. The strong intensity modulation along QH in x=0 gradually evolves into a Q-independent feature in x>11. This could be attributed to the localized Cu moment magnetism developing into an itinerant magnetism …
The chemical and magnetic structures of the series of compounds Ca$_{2-x}$La$_x$RuO$_4$ [$x = 0$, $0.05(1)$, $0.07(1)$, $0.12(1)$] have been investigated using neutron diffraction and resonant elastic x-ray scattering. Upon La doping, the low temperature S-Pbca space group of the parent compound is retained in all insulating samples [$x\leq0.07(1)$], but with significant changes to the atomic positions within the unit cell. These changes can be characterised in terms of the local RuO$_6$ octahedral coordination: with increasing doping the structure, crudely speaking, evolves from an orthorhomb…
The crystal structure and physical properties of BaFe2As2, BaCo2As2, and BaNi2As2 single crystals are surveyed. BaFe2As2 gives a magnetic and structural transition at TN = 132(1) K, BaCo2As2 is a paramagnetic metal, while BaNi2As2 has a structural phase transition at T0 = 131 K, followed by superconductivity below Tc = 0.69 K. The bulk superconductivity in Co-doped BaFe2As2 below Tc = 22 K is demonstrated by resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat data. In contrast to the cuprates, the Fe-based system appears to tolerate considerable disorder in the transition metal layers. Fir…
The electronic ground state in high-$T_{\rm c}$ cuprates where the superconducting state is suppressed by Ni substitution has been investigated in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$Cu$_{1-y}$Ni$_y$O$_4$ from the specific heat and muon spin relaxation measurements. It has been found that the ground state changes from a magnetically ordered state with the strong hole-trapping by Ni to a metallic state with the Kondo effect of Ni with increasing hole-concentration. Moreover, the analysis of the results has revealed that a phase separation into the magnetically ordered phase and the metallic phase occurs around the…
We investigate the electronic structure of nickelate superconductor NdNiO2 upon hole doping, by means of density-functional theory and dynamical mean-field theory. We demonstrate the strong intrinsic hybridization between strongly correlated states formed by Ni-3dx2-y2 orbital and itinerant electrons due to Nd-5d and Ni-3dz2 orbitals, producing a valence-fluctuating correlated metal as the normal state of hole-doped NdNiO2. The Hund's rule appears to play a dominating role on multi-orbital physics in the lightly doped compound, while its effect is gradually reduced by increasing the doping lev…
We use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Ir L3 edge to study the effect of hole doping upon the Jeff=1/2 Mott-insulating state in Sr2IrO4, via Rh replacement of the Ir site. The spin-wave gap, associated with XY-type spin-exchange anisotropy, collapses with increasing Rh content, prior to the suppression of the Mott-insulating state and in contrast to electron doping via La substitution of the Sr site. At the same time, despite heavy damping, the d-d excitation spectra retain their overall amplitude and dispersion character. A careful study of the spin-wave spectrum reveals tha…
We investigate the electronic structure and magnetic properties of a $J_\text{eff} = 1/2$ iridate Ca$_4$IrO$_6$ and the implications of doping electrons and holes using ab initio density functional theory. Our calculations considering spin-orbit interaction reveal that although the Mott-insulating parent compound transforms into a conductor upon doping, antiferromagnetism sustains in the doped system, albeit with a grossly noncollinear arrangement of the spins. We find a strong spin-orbit interaction and magneto-crystalline anisotropy, causing frustration in the system, possibly leading to the…
Partial substitution of Fe by Ta in the hole-doped La0.5Sr0.5FeO3 decreases the electric conductivity by up to three orders of magnitude. This decrease is in immediate correlation with a decrease of the electron hole concentration and a shift of the spectral weight within the O(1s)-Fe(3d) mixed states from eg bands near the Fermi energy to t2g bands. Corresponding differences in the Fe(2p) and O(1s) X-ray absorption spectra reveals formation of states with increased covalency in the initial state and states which contain O(2p) character, and that hole states are responsible for transport chang…
Using density functional theory we investigate the evolution of the magnetic ground state of NbFe$_{2}$ due to doping by Nb-excess and Fe-excess. We find that non-rigid-band effects, due to the contribution of Fe-\textit{d} states to the density of states at the Fermi level are crucial to the evolution of the magnetic phase diagram. Furthermore, the influence of disorder is important to the development of ferromagnetism upon Nb doping. These findings give a framework in which to understand the evolution of the magnetic ground state in the temperature-doping phase diagram. We investigate the ma…

The effect of doping on the electronic structure at the Mn sites in the La_{1-x}Sr_{1+x}MnO_4 series (x=0, 0.3 and 0.5) was studied by means of non-resonant hard X- ray emission spectroscopy (XES). We observe a linear dichroism in the Mn K-beta main lines (3p to 1s transitions) that is strongest for x=0 and decreases with increasing x to 0.5. The Mn K-beta main lines in the poly-crystalline samples change considerably less upon increasing the hole doping (substitution of La by Sr) than it would be expected based on the change of formal valence. From this we conclude that the charge and spin de…
We report Raman scattering spectra of iron-pnictide superconductor Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals with varying cobalt $x$ content. Upon cooling through the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic transition, we observe a large splitting of the E$_g$ in-plane phonon modes involving Fe and As displacements. The splitting of the in-plane phonons at the transition is strongly reduced upon doping and disappears for $x=0.06$ qualitatively following the trend displayed by the Fe magnetic moment. The origin of the splitting is discussed in terms of magnetic frustration inherent to iron-pnictide sys…
ThCoC$_2$ is a non-BCS, noncentrosymmetric superconductor with $T_c \simeq 2.5$~K, in which pairing mechanism was suggested to be either spin fluctuations or the electron-phonon coupling. Earlier experimental work revealed that $T_c$ can be greatly enhanced upon Ni doping in ThCo$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$C$_2$, up to 12~K for $x = 0.4$. In this work, using the Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method with the coherent potential approximation (KKR-CPA), the evolution of the electronic structure upon Ni doping was studied and the increase of the density of states at the Fermi level was found. The electron-phonon coupl…

The recent observation of superconductivity in infinite-layer Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_2$ thin films has attracted a lot of attention, since this compound is electronically and structurally analogous to the superconducting cuprates. Due to the challenges in the phase stabilization upon chemical doping with Sr, we synthesized artificial superlattices of LaNiO$_3$ embedded in insulating LaGaO$_3$, and used layer-selective topotactic reactions to reduce the nickelate layers to LaNiO$_{2}$. Hole doping is achieved via interfacial oxygen atoms and tuned via the layer thickness. We used electrical trans…
Different models for doping of two-orbital chains with mobile $S=1/2$ fermions and strong, ferromagnetic (FM) Hund's rule couplings stabilizing the S=1 spins are investigated by density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) methods. The competition between antiferromagnetic (AF) and FM order leads to a rich phase diagram with a narrow FM region for weak AF couplings and strongly enhanced triplet pairing correlations. Without a level difference between the orbitals, the spin gap persists upon doping, whereas gapless spin excitations are generated by interactions among itinerant polarons in the pr…
A central question in the high temperature cuprate superconductors is the fate of the parent Mott insulator upon charge doping. Here we use scanning tunneling microscopy to investigate the local electronic structure of lightly doped cuprate in the antiferromagnetic insulating regime. We show that the doped charge induces a spectral weight transfer from the high energy Hubbard bands to the low energy in-gap states. With increasing doping, a V-shaped density of state suppression occurs at the Fermi level, which is accompanied by the emergence of checkerboard charge order. The new STM perspective…
The evolution of electronic (spin and charge) excitations upon carrier doping is an extremely important issue in superconducting layered cuprates and the knowledge of its asymmetry between electron- and hole-dopings is still fragmentary. Here we combine x-ray and neutron inelastic scattering measurements to track the doping dependence of both spin and charge excitations in electron-doped materials. Copper L3 resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectra show that magnetic excitations shift to higher energy upon doping. Their dispersion becomes steeper near the magnetic zone center and deeply mix…
The transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) $1T$-TaS$_{2}$ exhibits a rich set of charge density wave (CDW) orders. Recent investigations suggested that using light or electric field can manipulate the commensurate (C) CDW ground state. Such manipulations are considered to be determined by the charge carrier doping. Here we simulate by first-principles calculations the carrier doping effect on CCDW in $1T$-TaS$_{2}$. We investigate the charge doping effects on the electronic structures and phonon instabilities of $1T$ structure and analyze the doping induced energy and distortion ratio variation…
We use inelastic neutron scattering to systematically investigate the Ni-doping evolution of the low-energy spin excitations in BaFe2-xNixAs2 spanning from underdoped antiferromagnet to overdoped superconductor (0.03< x < 0.18). In the undoped state, the low-energy (<80 meV) spin waves of BaFe2As2 form transversely elongated ellipses in the [H, K] plane of the reciprocal space. Upon Ni-doping, the c-axis magnetic exchange coupling is rapidly suppressed and the momentum distribution of spin excitations in the [H, K] plane is enlarged in both the transverse and longitudinal directions with respe…
We calculate the effect of local magnetic moments on the electron-phonon coupling in BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}+δ$ using the density functional perturbation theory. We show that the magnetism enhances the total electron-phonon coupling by $\sim 50%$, up to $λ\lesssim 0.35$, still not enough to explain the high critical temperature, but strong enough to have a non-negligible effect on superconductivity, for instance, by frustrating the coupling with spin fluctuations and inducing order parameter nodes. The enhancement comes mostly from a renormalization of the electron-phonon matrix elements. We also in…
The weak-coupling quantum phase diagrams of the one-dimensional (1D) Holstein-Hubbard and Peierls-Hubbard models are computed near half-filling, using a multi-step renormalization group technique. If strong enough, the electron-phonon interaction induces a spin gap. The spin gap, which determines the superconducting pairing energy, depends strongly on the band filling and decreases monotonically as the system is doped away from half-filling. However, the superconducting susceptibility exhibits a different doping dependence; it can vary non-monotonically with doping and exhibit a maximum at an …
Within the t-J ladder model, superconductivity with a modified d-wave symmetry in doped two-leg ladder cuprates is investigated based on the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism. It is shown that the spin-liquid ground-state at the half-filling evolves into the superconducting ground-state upon doping. In analogy to the doping dependence of the superconducting transition temperature in the planar cuprate superconductors, the superconducting transition temperature in doped two-leg ladder cuprates increases with increasing doping in the underdoped regime, and reaches a maximum in the …
We have found that the two dimensional t-J model, for the physical parameter range J/t = 0.4 reproduces the main experimental qualitative features of High-Tc copper oxide superconductors: d-wave superconducting correlations are strongly enhanced upon small doping and clear evidence of off diagonal long range order is found at the optimal doping δ~ 0.15. On the other hand antiferromagnetic long range order, clearly present at zero hole doping, is suppressed at small hole density with clear absence of antiferromagnetism at δ>~ 0.1.
We report the finding of time-reversal-symmetry-breaking $d_{x^2-y^2}+ id_{xy}$ superconducting ground state in the slave-boson mean-field theory for the t-J model on triangular lattice. For $t/J=-5$ ($t/J=-9$) pairing exists for $x < 13%$ ($x<8%$) upon electron doping, and $x <56%$ ($x<13%$) upon hole doping. These results are potentially relevant to doped Mott insulators Na$_x$CoO$_2$.yH$_2$O and Na$_{1-x}$TiO$_2$.
We give a brief review of the Mott-Kondo scenario and its consequence in the recently-discovered infinite-layer nickelate superconductors. We argue that the parent state is a self-doped Mott insulator and propose an effective $t$-$J$-$K$ model to account for its low-energy properties. At small doping, the model describes a low carrier density Kondo system with incoherent Kondo scattering at finite temperatures, in good agreement with experimental observation of the logarithmic temperature dependence of electric resistivity. Upon increasing Sr doping, the model predicts a breakdown of the Kondo…
Thin films provide a versatile platform to tune electron correlations and explore new physics in strongly correlated materials. Epitaxially grown thin films of the alkali-doped fulleride K$_{3+x}$C$_{60}$, for example, exhibit %various intriguing phenomena, including Mott transitions and superconductivity, depending on dimensionality and doping. Surprisingly, in the trilayer case, a strong electron-hole doping asymmetry has been observed in the superconducting phase, which is absent in the three-dimensional bulk limit. Using density-functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory, we show t…
The local structure of correlated spin-orbit insulator Sr$_{2-x}$M$_x$IrO$_4$ (M = K, La) has been investigated by Ir L$_3$-edge extended x-ray absorption fine structure measurements. The measurements were performed as a function of temperature for different dopings induced by substitution of Sr with La or K. It is found that Ir-O bonds have strong covalency and they hardly show any change across the Néel temperature. In the studied doping range, neither Ir-O bonds nor their dynamics, measured by their mean square relative displacements, show any appreciable change upon carrier doping, indicat…
The evolution of Ca$_{2-x}$Na$_{x}$CuO$_{2}$Cl$_{2}$ from Mott insulator to superconductor was studied using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. By measuring both the excitations near the Fermi energy as well as non-bonding states, we tracked the doping dependence of the electronic structure and the chemical potential with unprecedented precision. Our work reveals failures in the conventional quasiparticle theory, including the broad lineshapes of the insulator and the apparently paradoxical shift of the chemical potential within the Mott gap. To resolve this, we develop a model where t…
From a combination of high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional calculations, we show that BaFe2As2 possesses essentially two-dimensional electronic states, with a strong change of orbital character of two of the Gamma-centered Fermi surfaces as a function of kz. Upon Co doping, the electronic states in the vicinity of the Fermi level take on increasingly three-dimensional character. Both the orbital variation with kz and the more three-dimensional nature of the doped compounds have important consequences for the nesting conditions and thus possibly also …
High-temperature superconductivity emerges in the CuO$_2$ plane upon doping a Mott insulator. To ascertain the influence of Mott physics plus short-range correlations, we solve a three-band copper-oxide model in the charge-transfer regime using cellular dynamical mean-field theory with continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo as an impurity solver. We report the normal and superconducting phase diagram of this model as a function of doping, interaction strength and temperature. Upon hole doping of the charge-transfer insulator, the phase boundary between pseudogap and correlated metal consists of a…
We use inelastic neutron scattering to study the evolution of the generalized phonon density of states (GDOS) of the $n$-type high-$T_c$ superconductor Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_{4+δ}$ (NCCO), from the half-filled Mott-insulator ($x=0$) to the $T_c=24$ K superconductor ($x=0.15$). Upon doping the CuO$_2$ planes in Nd$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ (NCO) with electrons by Ce substitution, the most significant change in the GDOS is the softening of the highest phonon branches associated with the Cu-O bond stretching and out-of-plane oxygen vibration modes. However, the softening occurs within the first few percent o…
