We investigated the effect of Cd and Hg doping on the first order superconducting (SC) transition and the high field-low temperature SC state of CeCoIn$_5$ by measuring the specific heat of CeCo(In$_{\rm 1-x}$Cd$_{\rm x}$)$_5$ with x=0.0011, 0.0022 and 0.0033 and CeCo(In$_{\rm 1-x}$Hg$_{\rm x}$)$_5$ with x=0.00016, 0.00032, and 0.00048 at temperatures down to 0.1 K and fields up to 14 T. Cd substitution rapidly suppresses the cross-over temperature $T_{\rm 0}$, where the superconducting transition changes from second to first order, to $T$=0 K with x=0.0022 for $H\parallel$ [100], while it remains roughly constant up to x=0.0033 for $H\parallel$ [001]. The associated anomaly of the proposed FFLO state in Hg-doped samples is washed out by x=0.00048, while remaining at the same temperature, indicating high sensitivity of that state to impurities. We interpret these results as supporting the non-magnetic, possibly FFLO, origin of the high field - low temperature state in CeCoIn$_5$.
Low temperature magnetization M measurements down to 70~mK have been performed through the superconducting upper critical field H_c2 of CeCoIn5 with the field H parallel to the c axis of the tetragonal crystal. The crossing through the upper critical field H_c2(0) is marked by a sign change in the temperature dependence of M(T). A Fermi liquid law of the magnetization is observed in the superconducting phase while in the paramagnetic state above H_c2 a quasi-linear temperature dependence is obeyed. The specific heat below H_c2 is therefor dominated by the increase of γ(H), the linear term of t…
Layered material structures play a key role in enhancing electron-electron interactions to create correlated metallic phases that can transform into unconventional superconducting states. The quasi-two-dimensional electronic properties of such compounds are often inferred indirectly through examination of their bulk properties. Here we use scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy to directly probe in cross section the quasi-two-dimensional correlated electronic states of the heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn5. Our measurements reveal the strong confined nature of heavy quasi-particles,…
We have investigated the effect of Yb substitution on the Pauli limited, heavy fermion superconductor, CeCoIn$_5$. Yb acts as a non-magnetic divalent substituent for Ce throughout the entire doping range, equivalent to hole doping on the rare earth site. We found that the upper critical field in (Ce,Yb)CoIn$_5$ is Pauli limited, yet the reduced (H,T) phase diagram is insensitive to disorder, as expected in the purely orbitally limited case. We use the Pauli limiting field, the superconducting condensation energy and the electronic specific heat coefficient to determine the Wilson ratio ($R_{W}…
The Clogston estimate for the Pauli limit used in the original comment (and the paper to which it referred) neglects important effects that lead to a significant enhancement of the Pauli limit in CeCoIn5. The discussion in the original comment is therefore moot and the comment has been withdrawn.
We report the results of de-Haas-van-Alphen (dHvA) measurements in Cd doped CeCoIn$_5$ and LaCoIn$_5$. Cd doping is known to induce an antiferromagnetic order in the heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn$_5$, whose effect can be reversed with applied pressure. We find a slight but systematic change of the dHvA frequencies with Cd doping in both compounds, reflecting the chemical potential shift due to the addition of holes. The frequencies and effective masses are close to those found in the nominally pure compounds with similar changes apparent in the Ce and La compounds with Cd substitution. W…
We present linear polarization-dependent soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy data at the Ce $M_{4,5}$ edges of Cd and Sn doped CeCoIn$_5$. The 4$f$ ground state wave functions have been determined for their superconducting, antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic ground states. The absence of changes in the wave functions in CeCo(In$_{1-x}$Cd$_x$)$_5$ suggests the 4$f$\,--\,conduction electron ($cf$) hybridization is not affected by globally Cd doping, thus supporting the interpretation of magnetic droplets nucleating long range magnetic order. This is contrasted by changes in the wave function due …
We investigate the properties of the coexistence phase of itinerant antiferromagnetism and nodal $d$-wave superconductivity (Q-phase) discovered in heavy fermion CeCoIn5 under applied magnetic field. We solve the minimal model that includes $d$-wave superconductivity and underlying magnetic correlations in real space to elucidate the structure of the $Q$-phase in the presence of an externally applied magnetic field. We further focus on the role of magnetic impurities, and show that they nucleate the Q-phase at lower magnetic fields. Our most crucial finding is that, even at zero applied field,…
We investigated the effect of electron and hole doping on the high-field low-temperature superconducting state in CeCoIn$_5$ by measuring specific heat of CeCo(In$_{\rm 1-x}$M$_{\rm x}$)$_5$ with M=Sn, Cd and Hg and $x$ up to 0.33% at temperatures down to 0.1\,K and fields up to 14\,T. Although both Cd- and Hg-doping (hole-doping) suppresses the zero-field $T_c$ monotonically, $H_{c2}$ increases with small amounts of doping and has a maximum around $x$=0.2% (M=Cd). On the other hand, with Sn-doping (electron-doping) both zero-field $T_c$ and $H_{c2}$ decrease monotonically. The critical temper…
The heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn_5 can be tuned between superconducting and antiferromagnetic ground states by hole doping with Cd. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) data indicate that these two orders coexist microscopically with an ordered moment ~0.7 μ_B. As the ground state evolves, there is no change in the low frequency spin dynamics in the disordered state. These results suggest that the magnetism emerges locally in the vicinity of the Cd dopants.
We report a globally reversible effect of electronic tuning on the magnetic phase diagram in CeCoIn_{5} driven by electron (Pt and Sn) and hole (Cd, Hg) doping. Consequently, we are able to extract the superconducting pair breaking component for hole and electron dopants with pressure and co-doping studies, respectively. We find that these nominally non-magnetic dopants have a remarkably weak pair breaking effect for a d-wave superconductor. The pair breaking is weaker for hole dopants, which induce magnetic moments, than for electron dopants. Furthermore, both Pt and Sn doping have a similar …
Cadmium-doping the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn$_5$ at the percent level acts as an electronic tuning agent, sensitively shifting the balance between superconductivity and antiferromagnetism and opening new ambient-pressure phase space in the study of heavy-fermion ground states.
By using a molecular beam epitaxy technique, we fabricate a new type of superconducting superlattices with controlled atomic layer thicknesses of alternating blocks between heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn_5, which exhibits a strong Pauli pair-breaking effect, and nonmagnetic metal YbCoIn_5. The introduction of the thickness modulation of YbCoIn_5 block layers breaks the inversion symmetry centered at the superconducting block of CeCoIn_5. This configuration leads to dramatic changes in the temperature and angular dependence of the upper critical field, which can be understood by considerin…

The heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 is the first material, where different experimental probes show strong evidence pointing to the realization of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state. The inhomogeneous superconducting FFLO state with a periodically modulated order parameter was predicted to appear in Pauli-limited, sufficiently clean type-II superconductors already more than 40 years ago. On the other hand, CeCoIn5 is supposed to be close to a magnetic quantum critical point (QCP) showing strong antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin fluctuations (SF) at atmospheric pressure. We studi…
The thermal conductivity of the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn_5 has been studied in a magnetic field rotating within the 2D planes. A clear fourfold symmetry of the thermal conductivity which is characteristic of a superconducting gap with nodes along the (+-pi,+-pi)-directions is resolved. The thermal conductivity measurement also reveals a first order transition at H_c2, indicating a Pauli limited superconducting state. These results indicate that the symmetry most likely belongs to d_{x^2-y^2}, implying that the anisotropic antiferromagnetic fluctuation is relevant to the superconduct…
We report a highly unusual angular variation of the upper critical field (H_c2) in epitaxial superlattices CeCoIn_5(n)/YbCoIn_5(5), formed by alternating layers of n and a 5 unit-cell thick heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn_5 with a strong Pauli effect and normal metal YbCoIn_5, respectively. For the n=3 superlattice, H_{c2}(θ) changes smoothly as a function of the field angle θ. However, close to the superconducting transition temperature, H_{c2}(θ) exhibits a cusp near the parallel field (θ=0 deg). This cusp behavior disappears for n=4 and 5 superlattices. This sudden disappearance suggest…
Ultrasound velocity measurements of the unconventional superconductor CeCoIn_5 with extremely large Pauli paramagnetic susceptibility reveal an unusual structural transformation of the flux line lattice (FLL) in the vicinity of the upper critical field. The transition field coincides with that at which heat capacity measurements reveal a second order phase transition. The lowering of the sound velocity at the transition is consistent with the collapse of the FLL tilt modulus and a crossover to quasi two-dimensional FLL pinning. These results provide a strong evidence that the high field state …
We analyse the combined effect of orbital and Pauli depairing on the superconducting state, and apply the results to the heavy fermion CeCoIn$_5$. We find that: a) standard extrapolation based on the slope of $H_{c2}(T)$ in the vicinity of the transition temperature to T=0 does not always give accurate values of the orbital upper critical field; b) critical value of the Maki parameter, $α$, that determines onset of the first order transition depends on the Fermi surface shape and the symmetry of the gap, and is $α^*\approx 3$ for CeCoIn$_5$; c) the anisotropy of the thermodynamic and transport…
We present small angle neutron scattering studies of the vortex lattice (VL) in CeCoIn5 with magnetic fields applied parallel (H) to the antinodal [100] and nodal [110] directions. For H || [100], a single VL orientation is observed, while a 90 degree reorientation transition is found for H || [110]. For both field orientations and VL configurations we find a distorted hexagonal VL with an anisotropy, Gamma = 2.0 +/- 0.05. The VL form factor shows strong Pauli paramagnetic effects similar to what have previously been reported for H || [001]. At high fields, above which the upper critical field…
We investigated the magnetic field dependence of the superconducting phase transition in heavy fermion CeCoIn_5 (T_c = 2.3 K) using specific heat, magneto-caloric effect, and thermal expansion measurements. The superconducting transition becomes first order when the magnetic field is oriented along the 001 crystallographic direction with a strength greater that 4.7 T, and transition temperature below T_0 ~ 0.31 T_c. The change from second order at lower fields is reflected in strong sharpening of both specific heat and thermal expansion anomalies associated with the phase transition, a strong …
The high field superconducting state in CeCoIn5 has been studied by transverse field muon spin rotation measurements with an applied field parallel to the crystallographic c-axis close to the upper critical field Hc2 = 4.97 T. At magnetic fields >= 4.8 T the muon Knight shift is enhanced and the superconducting transition changes from second order towards first order as predicted for Pauli-limited superconductors. The field and temperature dependence of the transverse muon spin relaxation rate sigma reveal paramagnetic spin fluctuations in the field regime from 2 T < H < 4.8 T. In the normal s…
We performed low-temperature de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect measurements on a Ce$_{1-x}$Nd$_x$CoIn$_5$ series, for x = 0.02, 0.05, 0.1, and 1, down to T = 40 mK using torque magnetometry in magnetic felds up to 35 T. Our results indicate that a Fermi-surface (FS) reconstruction occurs from a quasi-two-dimensional (2D) topology for Nd-2% to a rather three-dimensional (3D) for Nd-5%, thus reducing the possibility of perfect FS nesting. The FS evolves further with increasing Nd content with no observed divergence of the effective mass between Nd-2% and 10%, consistent with the crossing of a spi…
CeCoIn5 is a heavy fermion Type-II superconductor which exhibits clear indications of Pauli-limited superconductivity. A variety of measurements give evidence for a transition at high magnetic fields inside the superconducting state, when the field is applied either parallel to or perpendicular to the c axis. When the field is perpendicular to the c axis, antiferromagnetic order is observed on the high-field side of the transition, with a magnetic wavevector of (q q 0.5), where q = 0.44 reciprocal lattice units. We show that this order remains as the magnetic field is rotated out of the basal …
We report the evolution of the spin resonance in CeCoIn$_{5}$ as a function of magnetic field and lanthanum substitution. In both cases, the resonance peak position shifts to lower energy and the lineshape broadens. For La doping, it is found that the ratio $Ω_{res}/k_{B}T_{c}$ is almost constant as a function of $x$. Under magnetic field the decrease of the excitation energy is similar for H// [1,$\bar{1}$,0] and [1,1,1] and faster than the decrease of $T_{c}(H)$. The Zeeman effect found for the field applied along [1,$\bar{1}$,0] corresponds to the ground state magnetic moment.
We develop a theory of the coexistence of superconductivity (SC) and antiferromagnetism (AFM) in CeCoIn5. We show that in Pauli-limited nodal superconductors the nesting of the quasi-particle pockets induced by Zeeman pair-breaking leads to incommensurate AFM with the moment normal to the field. We compute the phase diagram and find a first order transition to the normal state at low temperatures, absence of normal state AFM, and coexistence of SC and AFM at high fields, in agreement with experiments. We also predict the existence of a new double-Q magnetic phase.
Beside the spin density wave (SDW) order inside the superconducting phase in $\mathrm{CeCoIn_5}$ at high magnetic fields, recent neutron scattering measurements have found Bragg peaks in $5\%$ Nd doped $\mathrm{CeCoIn_5}$ at low fields. The intensity of Bragg peaks in low fields is suppressed by increasing field. Based on the phenomenological and microscopic modeling, we show that for the Pauli limited $d$-wave superconductors in the vicinity of SDW instability relevant for $\mathrm{CeCoIn_5}$, magnetic impurities locally induce droplets of SDW order. Because of the strong anisotropy in the mo…
The heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 is believed to be close to a magnetic instability, but no static magnetic order has been found. Cadmium doping on the In-site shifts the balance between superconductivity and antiferromagnetism to the latter with an extended concentration range where both types of order coexist at low temperatures. We investigated the magnetic structure of nominally 10% Cd-doped CeCoIn5, being antiferromagnetically ordered below T_N=3 K and superconducting below T_c=1.3 K, by elastic neutron scattering. Magnetic intensity was observed only at the ordering wave vector Q_…
The Ginzburg-Landau (GL) functional and the resultant phase diagram in strong fields where the Pauli paramagnetic depairing is not negligible are examined in details by assuming the weak coupling BCS model with a $d_{x^2-y^2}$-like pairing. In contrast to previous works on the same subject for spin-singlet pairings in which the orbital depairing effect was not treated consistently with the paramagnetic depairing, the temperature at which the mean field (MF) transition at $H_{c2}$ changes into a discontinuous one lies much above another temperature at which the $H_{c2}(T)$ and a second order tr…
Effects of Pauli paramagnetism on thermodynamic quantities in a vortex state, such as the specific heat $C$ and magnetization $M$, are studied using the quasiclassical Eilenberger formalism. We demonstrate that with an increase of paramagnetic depairing effect, the sigh of the curvature of the field dependence of $C$ changes from negative to positive, and that the Maki parameter $κ_2$ becomes an increasing function of temperature. Our results provide a natural explanation for the unusual field dependence of $C$ seen in CeCoIn$_5$ in terms of the paramagnetic effect.
We study s-wave superconductivity in the attractive Hubbard model in an applied magnetic field and assume the extreme Pauli limit where the orbital critical field is much greater than the Zeeman critical field. We work at a coupling corresponding roughly to the peak $T_c$ in the BCS to BEC crossover window and retain the crucial amplitude and phase fluctuations. At low field, as expected, the superconductor undergoes a second order thermal transition to the normal state, and is only weakly magnetized near $T_c$. At intermediate fields the thermal transition is still second order, but the magne…
In heavy-fermion superconductor Ce$_{1-x}$Yb$_x$CoIn$_5$ system, Yb doping was reported to cause a possible change from nodal $d$-wave superconductivity to a fully gapped $d$-wave molecular superfluid of composite pairs near $x \approx$ 0.07 (nominal value $x_{nom}$ = 0.2). Here we present systematic thermal conductivity measurements on Ce$_{1-x}$Yb$_x$CoIn$_5$ ($x$ = 0.013, 0.084, and 0.163) single crystals. The observed finite residual linear term $κ_0/T$ is insensitive to Yb doping, verifying the universal heat conduction of nodal $d$-wave superconducting gap in Ce$_{1-x}$Yb$_x$CoIn$_5$. Si…
Measurements of the current-voltage characteristics were performed on Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals with doping level $0.044 \leq x \leq 0.1$. An unconventional increase in the flux-flow resistivity $ρ_{\rm ff}$ with decreasing magnetic field was observed across this doping range. Such an abnormal field dependence of flux-flow resistivity is in contrast with the linear field dependence of $ρ_{\rm ff}$ in conventional type-II superconductors, but is similar to the behavior recently observed in the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn$_5$. A significantly enhanced $ρ_{\rm ff}$ wa…
Superconductivity can be destroyed by a magnetic field with an upper bound known as the Pauli-limit in spin-singlet superconductors. Almost all the discovered superconductors are spin-singlet, with the highest transition temperature $T_c$ at ambient pressure achieved in the cuprate family. The closest cuprate analogue is the recently discovered infinite-layer nickelate, which hosts substantial structural and electronic similarity to the cuprate. A previous magnetotransport study on Nd$_{0.775}$Sr$_{0.225}$NiO$_2$ has observed an isotropic Pauli-limited upper critical field. Here, we report a l…
The pseudo-binary thiospinel system Cu$_{1-x}$Cd$_{x}$Ir$_{2}$S$_{4}$ was investigated by the x-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements. It was shown that the system exhibits a miscibility-gap behavior for the Cd substitution, however, nearly monophasic samples was obtained by quenching at 1373 K, except for $0.4< x \leqslant 0.6$. With increasing the Cd concentration, the room-temperature electrical conductivity and Pauli susceptibility decrease monotonically, consistent with the hole-filling picture. The first-order metal-insulator tran…
Employing the four-band tight-binding model we study theoretically the doping dependence of the spin response in the normal state of novel Fe-based pnictide superconductors. We show that the commensurate spin density wave (SDW) transition that arises due to interband scattering between the hole $α$-pockets and the electron $β$-pockets disappears already at the doping concentration $x \approx 0.04$ reflecting the evolution of the Fermi surfaces. Correspondingly, with further increase of the doping the antiferromagnetic fluctuations are suppressed for $x > 0.1$ and the Im$χ({\bf Q_{AFM}},ω)$ bec…
CeCo(In$_{0.990}$Hg$_{0.010}$)$_{5}$ is a charge doped variant of the $d$-wave CoCoIn$_{5}$ superconductor with coexistent antiferromagnetic and superconducting transitions occurring at T$_{N}$= 3.4 K and T$_{c}$=1.4 K, respectively. We use neutron diffraction and spectroscopy to show that the magnetic resonant fluctuations present in the parent superconducting phase are replaced by collinear $c$-axis magnetic order with three-dimensional Ising critical fluctuations. No low energy transverse spin fluctuations are observable in this doping-induced antiferromagnetic phase and the dynamic resonan…
We present a finite temperature ($T$) study of the t-J model on the two-dimensional triangular lattice for the negative hopping $t$, as relevant for the electron-doped Na$_x$CoO$_2$ (NCO). To understand several aspects of this system, we study the $T$-dependent chemical potential, specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, and the dynamic Hall-coefficient across the entire doping range. We show systematically, how this simplest model for strongly correlated electrons describes a crossover as function of doping ($x$) from a Pauli-like weakly spin-correlated metal close to the band-limit (density $…
We report the violation of the Pauli limit due to intrinsic spin-orbit coupling in SrTiO3 heterostructures. Via selective doping down to a few nanometers, a two-dimensional superconductor is formed, geometrically suppressing orbital pair-breaking. The spin-orbit scattering is exposed by the robust in-plane superconducting upper critical field, exceeding the Pauli limit by a factor of 4. Transport scattering times several orders of magnitude higher than for conventional thin film superconductors enables a new regime to be entered, where spin-orbit coupling effects arise non-perturbatively.
The field-induced antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering in the $d_{x^2-y^2}$-paired superconducting phase, which has been recently found in the weak-coupling approach as a basic mechanism due to the Pauli paramagnetic pair-breaking (PPB) in relation to the high-field behaviors in CeCoIn_5, is studied in the strong-coupling approach taking account of the electron correlation. Applying the fluctuation-exchange (FLEX) approximation to the two-dimensional Hubbard model including the Zeeman term, it is shown that the PPB-induced AFM ordering in the superconducting (SC) phase and the first order SC trans…
The effect of off-plane impurity on superconductivity and non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) behavior in the layered heavy-fermion compound CeCo$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$In$_5$ is investigated by specific heat, magnetization, and electrical resistivity measurements. These measurements reveal that the superconducting (SC) transition temperature T$_c$ monotonically decreases from 2.3 K (x=0) to 0.8 K (x=0.20) with increasing x, and then the SC order disappears above x=0.25. At the same time, the Ni substitution yields the NFL behavior at zero field for x=0.25, characterized by the -ln T divergence in specific heat divi…
By systematic chemical substitution of Pt and Ni in the newly-discovered superconductor Nb$_2$PdS$_5$ ($T_c\sim$6 K), we study the evolution of its superconducting properties with doping, focussing on the behavior of the upper critical field $H_{c2}$. In contrast to the previous results of Se doping on S sites, superconductivity is found to be rather robust against the Pt and Ni dopants on the one-dimensional Pd chains. Most strikingly, the reduced $H_{c2}$, i.e., the ratio of $H_{c2}/T_c$, is seen to be significantly enhanced by the heavier Pt doping but suppressed in the Ni-doped counterpart…
Optical spectra of two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDC) are influenced by complex multi-particle excitonic states. Their theoretical analysis requires solving the many-body problem, which in most cases, is prohibitively complicated. In this work, we calculate the optical spectra by exact diagonalization of the three-particle Hamiltonian within the Tamm-Dancoff approximation where the doping effects are accounted for via the Pauli blocking mechanism, modelled by a discretized mesh in the momentum space. The single-particle basis is extracted from the {\it ab initio} calculati…
We report on the anisotropic properties of Pauli-limited superconductivity (SC) and antiferromagnetism (AFM) in the solid solutions CeCo(In_{1-x}Zn_x)_5 (x<=0.07). In CeCo(In_{1-x}Zn_x)_5, the SC transition temperature T_c is continuously reduced from 2.3 K (x=0) to ~1.4 K (x=0.07) by doping Zn, and then the AFM order with the transition temperature of T_N~2.2 K develops for x larger than ~0.05. The present thermal, transport and magnetic measurements under magnetic field B reveal that the substitution of Zn for In yields little change of low-temperature upper critical field μ_0H_{c2} for both…
Within the framework of density functional theory we investigate the nature of magnetism in various families of Fe-based superconductors. (i) We show that magnetization of stripe-type antiferromagnetic order always becomes stronger when As is substituted by Sb in LaOFeAs, BaFe$_2$As$_2$ and LiFeAs. By calculating Pauli susceptibilities, we attribute the magnetization increase obtained after replacing As by Sb to the enhancement of an instability at $(π,π)$. This points to a strong connection between Fermi surface nesting and magnetism, which supports the theory of the itinerant nature of magne…
The neutron spin resonance is a collective magnetic excitation that appears in copper oxide, iron pnictide, and heavy fermion unconventional superconductors. Although the resonance is commonly associated with a spin-exciton due to the $d$($s^{\pm}$)-wave symmetry of the superconducting order parameter, it has also been proposed to be a magnon-like excitation appearing in the superconducting state. Here we use inelastic neutron scattering to demonstrate that the resonance in the heavy fermion superconductor Ce$_{1-x}$Yb$_{x}$CoIn$_5$ with $x=0,0.05,0.3$ has a ring-like upward dispersion that is…
Strong electron correlations lie at the origin of transformative phenomena such as colossal magneto-resistance and high-temperature superconductivity. Already near room temperature, doped copper oxide materials display remarkable features such as a pseudo-gap and a "strange metal" phase with unusual transport properties. The essence of this physics is believed to be captured by the Fermi-Hubbard model of repulsively interacting, itinerant fermions on a lattice. Here we report on the site-resolved observation of charge and spin correlations in the two-dimensional (2D) Fermi-Hubbard model realiz…
Graphene is at the forefront of condensed matter sciences, because of a variety of interesting phenomena it supports. If graphene could support high Tc superconductivity, after doping for example, it will make it even more valuable. Some authors have suggested possibility of superconductivity in graphite like systems. However, an early suggestion of one of us (Baskaran) was unique in the sense it combined Pauling's classic idea of resonating valence bond physics with band theory to obtain some exciting results for superconductivity. Black-Schaffer and Doniach took this approach further and fou…
We present small angle neutron scattering studies of the magnetic vortex lattice (VL) in Ca$_{0.04}$Y$_{0.96}$Ba$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7}$ up to a field of 16.7 T, and Ca$_{0.15}$Y$_{0.85}$Ba$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7}$ up to 25 T. We find that the series of vortex lattice structure transitions have shifted down in field relative to those reported for the undoped compound. We attribute this mainly to the weakening of the 1-D superconductivity in the Cu-O chains by the disorder introduced by doping. The hole doping by calcium is also expected to alter the Fermi velocity and it reduces the upper critical fi…

We have studied the effect of Iridium doping (Rh$_{17-x}$Ir$_{x}$S$_{15}$) in the Rhodium sites of the strongly correlated superconductor Rh$_{17}$S$_{15}$. Even at low levels of doping (x = 1 and 2) we see a drastic change in the superconducting properties as compared to those of the undoped system. We deduce that there is a reduction in the density of states at the Fermi level from reduced Pauli susceptibility and Sommerfeld coefficient in the doped samples. Moreover, the second magnetization peak in the isothermal magnetization scan (`fishtail') which was very prominent in the magnetization…
Two contradictory phase diagrams have dominated the literature of high-$T_c$ cuprate superconductors. Does the pseudogap line cross the superconducting $T_c$-dome or not? To answer, we have revisited the experimental magnetic susceptibility and knight shift of four different compounds, La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$, Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_{1-x}$Y$_x$Cu$_2$O$_8$, Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+y}$, and YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+y}$, as a function of temperature and doping. The susceptibility can be described by the same function for all materials, having a magnetic and an electronic contributions. The former is the 2D …
We report a systematic study of the resistive superconducting transition in the electron-doped cuprates Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4-δ}$ down to 1.5 K for magnetic field up to 58 T applied parallel to the conducting ab-planes. We find that the zero temperature parallel critical field (H$_{c2\parallel ab}$(0)) exceeds 58 T for the underdoped and optimally-doped films. For the overdoped films, 58 T is sufficient to suppress the superconductivity. We also find that the Zeeman energy $μ_B$H$_{c2\parallel ab}$(0) reaches the superconducting gap ($\triangle_0$), i.e. $μ_B$H$_{c2\parallel ab}(0)\simeq \…
Here, we report an overview of the phase diagram of single layered and double layered Fe arsenide superconductors at high magnetic fields. Our systematic magnetotransport measurements of polycrystalline SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ at different doping levels confirm the upward curvature of the upper critical magnetic field $H_{c2}(T)$ as a function of temperature $T$ defining the phase boundary between the superconducting and metallic states for crystallites with the ab planes oriented nearly perpendicular to the magnetic field. We further show from measurements on single crystals that this feature, w…
