From a combination of high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional calculations, we show that BaFe2As2 possesses essentially two-dimensional electronic states, with a strong change of orbital character of two of the Gamma-centered Fermi surfaces as a function of kz. Upon Co doping, the electronic states in the vicinity of the Fermi level take on increasingly three-dimensional character. Both the orbital variation with kz and the more three-dimensional nature of the doped compounds have important consequences for the nesting conditions and thus possibly also for the appearance of antiferromagnetic and superconducting phases.
By comparing single-particle spectral functions of t-J and Hubbard models with recent angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) results for LSCO and Nd-LSCO, we can decide where holes go as a function of doping, and more specifically, which type of stripe (bond-, site-centered) is present in these materials at a given doping. For dopings greater than about 12% our calculation shows furthermore that the holes prefer to proliferate out of the metallic stripes into the neighboring antiferromagnetic domains. The spectra were calculated by a cluster perturbation technique, for which we present an altern…
We have analyzed experimental evidence for an anomalous transfer of spectral weight from high to low energy scales in both electron and hole doped cuprates as a function of doping. X-ray scattering, optical and photoemission spectra are all found to show that the high energy spectral weight decreases with increasing doping at a rate much faster than predictions of the large $U-$limit calculations. The observed doping evolution is however well-described by an intermediate coupling scenario where the effective Hubbard $U$ is comparable to the bandwidth. The experimental spectra across various sp…
Recently, hole-doped superconducting cuprates with the T'-structure La1.8-xEu0.2SrxCuO4 (LESCO) have attracted a lot of attention. We have performed x-ray photoemission and absorption spectroscopy measurements on as-grown and reduced T0-LESCO. Results show that electrons and holes were doped by reduction annealing and Sr substitution, respectively. However, it is shown that the system remains on the electron-doped side of the Mott insulator or that the charge-transfer gap is collapsed in the parent compound.
Both electronic Raman scattering (ERS) and angle-resolved photoemission spectra (ARPES) revealed two energy scales for the gap in different momentum spaces in the cuprates. However, the interpretations were different, and the gap values were also different in two experiments. In order to clarify the origin of these discrepancies, we directly compared ERS and ARPES by calculating ERS from the experimental data of ARPES through the Kubo formula. The calculated ERS spectra were in good agreement with the experimental results except for the B$_{1g}$ peak energies. The doping-dependent B$_{2g}$ pea…
The electronic structure of YBa2Cu3O6+x and La2-xSrxCuO4 for various values of x has been investigated using hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy. The experimental results establish that the cleaving of YBa2Cu3O6+x compounds occurs predominantly in the BaCuO3 complex leading to charged surfaces at higher x and to uncharged surfaces at lower x values. The bulk component of the core level spectra exhibits a shift in binding energy as a function of x, from which a shift of the chemical potential as a function of hole concentration in the CuO2 layers could be derived. The doping dependence of the…
High resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission measurements have been carried out on Bi2Sr2CuO6+d superconductor covering a wide doping range from heavily underdoped to heavily overdoped samples. Two obvious energy scales are identified in the nodal dispersions: one is the well-known 50-80 meV high energy kink and the other is <10 meV low energy kink. The high energy kink increases monotonously in its energy scale with increasing doping and shows weak temperature dependence, while the low energy kink exhibits a non-monotonic doping dependence with its coupling strength enhanced sharp…
We investigate the doping dependent low energy, low temperature ($T$ = 5 K) properties of nodal quasiparticles in the d-wave superconductor Bi$_{2.1}$Sr$_{1.9}$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi2212). By utilizing ultrahigh resolution laser-excited angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we obtain precise band dispersions near $E_{F}$, mean free paths and scattering rates ($Γ$) of quasiparticles. For optimally and overdoped, we obtain very sharp quasiparticle peaks of 8 meV and 6 meV full-width at half-maximum, respectively, in accord with terahertz conductivity. For all doping levels, we find the energ…
The $(π,π)$ shadow band (SB) in La-based cuprate family (La214) was studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) over a wide doping range from $x=0.01$ to $x=0.25$. Unlike the well-studied case of the Bi-based cuprate family, an overall strong, monotonic doping dependence of the SB intensity at the Fermi level ($E_F$) was observed. In contrast to a previous report for the presence of the SB only close to $x=1/8$, we found it exists in a wide doping range, associated with a doping-independent $(π,π)$ wave vector but strongly doping-dependent intensity: It is the strongest at $x\…
The spectral properties of a one-dimensional (1D) single-chain Mott insulator Sr$_2$CuO$_{3}$ have been studied in angle-resolved photoemission and optical spectroscopy, at half filling and with small concentrations of extra charge doped into the chains via high oxygen pressure growth. The single- particle gap is reduced with oxygen doping, but the metallic state is not reached. The bandwidth of the charge-transfer band increases with doping, while the state becomes narrower, allowing unambiguous observation of separated spinon and holon branches in the doped system. The optical gap is not cha…
We demonstrated experimentally a direct way to probe a hidden propensity to the formation of spin density wave (SDW) in a non-magnetic metal with strong Fermi surface nesting. Substituting Fe for a tiny amount of Cu (1%) induced an incommensurate magnetic order below 20 K in heavily-overdoped La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO). Elastic neutron scattering suggested that this order cannot be ascribed to the localized spins on Cu or doped Fe. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), combined with numerical calculations, revealed a strong Fermi surface nesting inherent in the pristine LSCO that likely …
Doping Evolution of Nodal Electron Dynamics in Trilayer Cuprate Superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{10+δ}$ Revealed by Laser-Based Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy
We report a complete analysis of the formal oxidation state of Co in NaxCoO2, in the interval 0.31<x<0.67. Iodometric titration and thermoelectric power confirm that a direct relationship between the Na content and the amount of Co 3 + cannot be established in this system. Creation of a significant amount of oxygen vacancies accompanies Na-ion deintercalation, keeping the formal Co valence at 3.45 + for x<0.45. To the light of new thermoelectric power data which reveals important differences between the hydrated (superconducting) and non-hydrated (non-superconducting) samples, we propose here …
We have performed high resolution angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) studies on electron doped cuprate superconductors Sm2-xCexCuO4 (x=0.10, 0.15, 0.18), Nd2-xCexCuO4 (x=0.15) and Eu2-xCexCuO4 (x=0.15). Imaginary parts of the electron removal self energy show step-like features due to an electron-bosonic mode coupling. The step-like feature is seen along both nodal and anti-nodal directions but at energies of 50 and 70 meV, respectively, independent of the doping and rare earth element. Such energy scales can be understood as being due to preferential coupling to half- and full-breathing mod…
25 years after discovery of high-temperature superconductivity (HTSC) in La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_4$ (LBCO), the HTSC continues to pose some of the biggest challenges in materials science. Cuprates are fundamentally different from conventional superconductors in that the metallic conductivity and superconductivity are induced by doping carriers into an antiferromagnetically ordered correlated insulator. In such systems, the normal state is expected to be quite different from a Landau-Fermi liquid - the basis for the conventional BCS theory of superconductivity. The situation is additionally compli…
We have performed a detailed study of Cu $2p$ core-level spectra in single layer La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$, La doped Bi$_2$Sr$_{1.6}$La$_{0.4}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ (Bi2201) and bilayer Bi$_2$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi2212) high-temperature superconductors by using hard x-ray photoemission (HX-PES). We identify the Cu$^{2+}$ derived (i) the Zhang-Rice singlet (ZRS) feature, (ii) the $d^{n+1}\underline{L}$ (ligand screened) feature, (iii) the $d^{n}$ satellite feature, as well as the hole-doping derived high binding energy feature in the main peak. In Bi-based cuprates, intensities of the $d^{n}$ …
We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on the overdoped Ba$_{0.3}$K$_{0.7}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ superconductor ($T_c$ = 22 K). We demonstrate that the superconducting (SC) gap on each Fermi surface (FS) is nearly isotropic whereas the gap value varies from 4.4 to 7.9 meV on different FSs. By comparing with under- and optimally-doped Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$, we find that the gap value on each FS nearly scales with $T_c$ over a wide doping range (0.25 $\textyen leq$ $x$ $\textyen leq$ 0.7). Although the FS volume and the SC gap magnitude are strongly doping dependent, the multip…
First-principles calculation was used to study the structural and electronic features of the low dimensional oxide structure, SrTiO_{3}/Sr_{1-x}La_{x}TiO_{3} (x=0.25) superlattices, constructed by submonolayer low dimensional La doping into SrTiO_{3}. We demonstrate a dimensionality crossover from three-dimensional to two-dimensional (3D \to 2D) electronic behavior in the system. Two types of carriers, one confined to 2D and the other extended, exhibit distinct tunable (3D \to 2D) transport characteristics that will enable the study of many properties (e.g., superconductivity) through this cha…
In FeSe-derived superconductors, the lack of a systematic and clean control on the carrier concentration prevents the comprehensive understanding on the phase diagram and the interplay between different phases. Here by K dosing and angle resolved photoemission study on thick FeSe films and FeSe$_{0.93}$S$_{0.07}$ bulk crystals, the phase diagram of FeSe as a function of electron doping is established, which is extraordinarily different from other Fe-based superconductors. The correlation strength remarkably increases with increasing doping, while an insulting phase emerges in the heavily overd…
In order to realize superconductivity in cuprates with the T'-type structure, not only chemical substitution (Ce doping) but also post-growth reduction annealing is necessary. In the case of thin films, however, well-designed reduction annealing alone without Ce doping can induce superconductivity in the T'-type cuprates. In order to unveil the origin of superconductivity in the Ce-undoped T'-type cuprates, we have performed bulk-sensitive hard x-ray photoemission and soft x-ray absorption spectroscopies on superconducting and non-superconducting Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ ($x=$ 0, 0.15, and 0.19…
Samples of Nd(2-x)Ce(x)CuO(4), an electron-doped high temperature superconducting cuprate (HTSC), near optimal doping at x = 0.155 were measured via angle resolved photoemission (ARPES). We report a renormalization feature in the self energy ("kink") in the band dispersion at 50 - 60 meV present in nodal and antinodal cuts across the Fermi surface. Specifically, while the kink had previously only been seen in the antinodal region, it is now observed also in the nodal region, reminiscent of what has been observed in hole-doped cuprates.
This treatise reviews latest results obtained from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on cuprate superconductors, with a special focus on the electron-phonon interaction. What has emerged is rich information about the anomalous electron-phonon interaction well beyond the traditional views of the subject. It exhibits strong doping, momentum and phonon symmetry dependence, and shows complex interplay with the strong electron-electron interaction in these materials.
To understand the superconductivity recently discovered in Nd$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$NiO$_2$, we carried out LDA+DMFT (local density approximation plus dynamical mean-field theory) and magnetic force response calculations. The on-site correlation in Ni-$3d$ orbitals causes notable changes in the electronic structure. The calculated temperature-dependent susceptibility exhibits the Curie-Weiss behavior, indicating the localized character of its moment. From the low-frequency behavior of self-energy, we conclude that the undoped phase of this nickelate is Fermi-liquid-like contrary to cuprates. Intere…
Using high energy resolution angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we have resolved the bilayer splitting effect in a wide range of dopings of the bilayer cuprate $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ}$. This bilayer splitting is due to a nonvanishing intracell coupling $t_{\perp}$, and contrary to expectations, it is not reduced in the underdoped materials. This has implications for understanding the increased c-axis confinement in underdoped materials.
We present an overview of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) studies of high-temperature cuprate superconductors aiming at elucidating the relationship between the superconductivity, the pseudogap, and the Fermi arc. ARPES studies of underdoped samples show a momentum dependence of the energy gap below Tc which deviates from a simple d-wave form, suggesting the coexistence of multiple energy scales in the superconducting state. Hence, two distinct energy scales have been introduced, namely, the gap near the node (characterized by Delta_0) and in the anti-nodal region (characteri…
We have performed angle-resolved photoemission and core-level x-ray photoemission studies of the single-layer cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CuO$_{6+δ}$ (Bi2201) and revealed the doping evolution of the electronic structure from the lightly-doped to optimally-doped regions. We have observed the formation of the dispersive quasi-particle band, evolution of the Fermi ``arc'' into the Fermi surface and the shift of the chemical potential with hole doping as in other cuprates. The doping evolution in Bi2201 is similar to that in Ca$_{2-x}$Na$_{x}$CuO$_{2}$Cl$_2$ (Na-CCOC), where a rapid chemical po…
Due to the orthorhombic distortion of the lattice, the electronic hopping integrals along the $a$ and $b$ diagonals, the orthorhombic directions, are slightly different. We calculate their difference in the LDA and find $t_{a}^{\prime}-t_{b}^{\prime}\approx 8 $meV. We argue that electron correlations in the insulating phase of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$, i. e. at doping $x\leq 0.055,$ dramatically enhance the $(t_{a}^{\prime}-t_{b}^{\prime}) $-splitting between the $a$- and $b$-hole valleys. In particular, we predict that the intensity of both angle-resolved photoemission and of optical absor…
We present an experimental study of the dynamics of holes in the valence bands of 0, 1, and 2 dimensional undoped model cuprates, as expressed via the screening of a Cu 2p core hole. The response depends strongly upon the dimensionality and the details of the Cu-O-Cu network geometry and clearly goes beyond the present theoretical state-of-the-art description within the three-band d-p model.
The energy gap for electronic excitations is one of the most important characteristics of the superconducting state, as it directly refects the pairing of electrons. In the copper-oxide high temperature superconductors (HTSCs), a strongly anisotropic energy gap, which vanishes along high symmetry directions, is a clear manifestation of the d-wave symmetry of the pairing. There is, however, a dramatic change in the form of the gap anisotropy with reduced carrier concentration (underdoping). Although the vanishing of the gap along the diagonal to the square Cu-O bond directions is robust, the do…
By partially doping Pb to effectively suppress the superstructure in single-layered cuprate Bi2Sr2CuO6+δ(Pb-Bi2201) and annealing them in vacuum or in high pressure oxygen atmosphere, a series of high quality Pb-Bi2201 single crystals are obtained with Tc covering from 17 K to non-supercondcuting in the overdoped region. High resolution angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements are carried out on these samples to investigate the evolution of the Fermi surface topology with doping in the normal state. Clear and complete Fermi surface are observed and quantitatively analyzed…
Electronic structure of newly synthesized single crystals of calcium iron arsenide doped with sodium with Tc ranging from 33 to 14 K has been determined by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The measured band dispersion is in general agreement with theoretical calculations, nonetheless implies absence of Fermi surface nesting at antiferromagnetic vector. A clearly developing below Tc strongly band-dependant superconducting gap has been revealed for samples with various doping levels. BCS ratio for optimal doping, $2Δ/k_{\rm B}T_{\rm c}=5.5$, is substantially smaller than the nu…
Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) studies of the overdoped cuprate superconductor La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ find only small changes in the near nodal electron self energy over a spectral range of several hundred meV as the doping increases from x=0.2 to x=0.3 and the superconducting transition temperature T_c decreases from 32K to 0K. These measurements put constraints on the structure of the electron-electron interaction. Here we show that a spin-fluctuation interaction leads to behavior which is consistent with these experimental results.
Lattice contribution to the electronic self-energy in complex correlated oxides is a fascinating subject that has lately stimulated lively discussions. Expectations of electron-phonon self-energy effects for simpler materials, such as Pd and Al, have resulted in several misconceptions in strongly correlated oxides. Here we analyze a number of arguments claiming that phonons cannot be the origin of certain self-energy effects seen in high-$T_c$ cuprate superconductors via angle resolved photoemission experiments (ARPES), including the temperature dependence, doping dependence of the renormaliza…
The joint density of states (JDOS) of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x is calculated by evaluating the autocorrelation of the single particle spectral function A(k,omega) measured from angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). These results are compared with Fourier transformed (FT) conductance modulations measured by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Good agreement between the two experimental probes is found for two different doping values examined. In addition, by comparing the FT-STM results to the autocorrelated ARPES spectra with different photon polarization, new insight on the form of the S…
We have performed a systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study of the high-Tc cuprates La2-xSrxCuO4, ranging from the underdoped insulator to the superconductor to the overdoped metal. We have revealed a systematic doping evolution of the band dispersions and (underlying) Fermi surfaces, pseudogap and quasi-particle features under the influence of strong electron-electron interaction and electron-phonon interaction. The unusual transport and thermodynamic properties are explained by taking into account the pseudogap opening and the Fermi arc formation, due to which the …
High-resolution photoemission is used to study the electronic structure of the cuprate superconductor, Bi2212, as a function of hole doping and temperature. A kink observed in the band dispersion in the nodal direction in the superconducting state is associated with coupling to a resonant mode observed in neutron scattering. From the measured real part of the self energy it is possible to extract a coupling constant which is largest in the underdoped regime, then decreasing continuously into the overdoped regime.
The doping and temperature dependent conductivity of electron-doped cuprates is analysed. The variation of kinetic energy with doping is shown to imply that the materials are approximately as strongly correlated as the hole-doped materials. The optical spectrum is fit to a quasiparticle scattering model; while the model fits the optical data well, gross inconsistencies with photoemission data are found, implying the presence of a large, strongly doping dependent Landau parameter.
We have performed an angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study of lightly-doped to underdoped YBa2Cu3Oy (YBCO) untwinned single crystals and a core-level x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) study of YBCO single and polycrystals. In the zone diagonal (nodal) direction, dispersive quasi-particle (QP) features crossing the Fermi level were observed down to the hole concentration of ~ 4%, which explains the metallic transport of the lightly-doped YBCO. The chemical potential shift estimated from XPS was more rapid than in the Bi2212 cuprates. Upon hole doping, very rapid spectral …
We have performed a systematic doping dependent study of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO) (0.03$\leq x \leq$0.3) by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. In the entire doping range, the underlying ``Fermi surface" determined from the low energy spectral weight approximately satisfies Luttinger's theorem, even down to the lightly-doped region. This is in strong contrast to the result on Ca$_{2-x}$Na$_x$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$ (Na-CCOC), which shows a strong deviation from Luttinger's theorem. The differences between LSCO and Na-CCOC are correlated with the different behaviors of the chemical potential…
Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 (x = 0.06, 0.14, and 0.24) shows that the width of the Fe 3d yz/zx hole band depends on the doping level. In contrast, the Fe 3d x^2-y^2 and 3z^2-r^2 bands are rigid and shifted by the Co doping. The Fe 3d yz/zx hole band is flattened at the optimal doping level x = 0.06, indicating that the band renormalization of the Fe 3d yz/zx band correlates with the enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature. The orbital-dependent and doping-dependent band renormalization indicates that the fluctuations responsible for the super…
Using femtosecond time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy we investigate the effect of electron doping on the electron dynamics in Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_x)_2As_2 in a range of 0 < x < 0.15 at temperatures slightly above the Néel temperature. By analyzing the time-dependent photoemission intensity of the pump laser excited population as a function of energy, we found that the relaxation times at 0 < E-E_F < 0.2 eV are doping dependent and about 100 fs shorter at optimal doping than for overdoped and parent compounds. Analysis of the relaxation rates also reveals the presence of a pump fluen…
We study the systematic doping evolution of nodal dispersions by in-situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on the continuously doped surface of a high-temperature superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+x}$. We reveal that the nodal dispersion has three segments separated by two kinks, located at ~10 meV and roughly 70 meV, respectively. The three segments have different band velocities and different doping dependence. In particular, the velocity of the high-energy segment increases monotonically as the doping level decreases and can even surpass the bare band velocity. We propose tha…
We use angle-resolved photoemission with circularly polarized excitation to demonstrate that in the 5x1 superstructure-free Pb-Bi2212 material there are no signatures of time-reversal symmetry breaking in the sense of the criteria developed earlier (Kaminski et al. Nature {\bf 416}, 610 (2002)). In addition to the existing technique, we suggest and apply an independent experimental approach to prove the absence of the effect in the studied compounds. The dichroic signal retains reflection antisymmetry as a function of temperature and doping and in all mirror planes, precisely defined by the ex…
We have investigated the doping and temperature dependences of the pseudogap/superconducting gap in the single-layer cuprate La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The results clearly exhibit two distinct energy and temperature scales, namely, the gap around ($π$,0) of magnitude $Δ^*$ and the gap around the node characterized by the d-wave order parameter $Δ_0$, like the double-layer cuprate Bi2212. In comparison with Bi2212 having higher $T_c$'s, $Δ_0$ is smaller, while $Δ^*$ and $T^*$ are similar. This result suggests that $Δ^*$ and $T^*$ are approximately mate…
Recent angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) studies of the high Tc superconductors are reviewed. Amongst the topics discussed are: the spectral function interpretation of ARPES data and sum rules; studies of the momentum distribution and the Fermi surface (FS); dispersion of electronic states, flat bands and superlattice effects; unusual lineshapes and their temperature dependence; the question of bilayer splitting; detailed studies of the superconducting gap and its anisotropy; and, finally, studies of the pseudogap and evolution of the FS with doping in the underdoped materials.
We have performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on heavily electron-doped non-superconducting (SC) BaFe$_{1.7}$Co$_{0.3}$As$_2$. We find that the two hole Fermi surface pockets at the zone center observed in the hole-doped superconducting Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ are absent or very small in this compound, while the two electron pockets at the M point significantly expand due to electron doping by the Co substitution. Comparison of the Fermi surface between non-SC and SC samples indicates that the coexistence of hole and electron pockets connected via the anti…
We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of Co-based boride superconductor LaCo1.73Fe0.27B2 (Tc = 4.1 K), which is isostructural to the 122-type Fe-pnictide superconductor with the pnictogen atom being replaced with boron. We found that the Fermi level is located at a dip in the density of states (DOS) in contrast to Co-pnictide ferromagnets. This reduction in DOS together with the strong Co 3d-B 2p covalent bonding removes the ferromagnetic order and may cause the superconductivity. The energy bands near the Fermi level show higher three dimensionality and a weaker electron…
A simple antiferromagnetic approach to the Mott transition was recently shown to provide a satisfactory explanation for the Mott gap collapse with doping observed in photoemission experiments on electron-doped cuprates. Here this approach is extended in a number of ways. RPA, mode coupling (via self-consistent renormalization), and (to a limited extent) self-consistent Born approximation calculations are compared to assess the roles of hot-spot fluctuations and interaction with spin waves. When fluctuations are included, the calculation satisfies the Mermin-Wagner theorem, and the mean-field g…
We have performed systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on single-layered cuprate superconductor Bi2Sr2CuO6 to elucidate the origin of shadow band. We found that the shadow band is exactly the c(2x2) replica of the main band irrespective of the carrier concentration and its intensity is invariable with respect to temperature, doping, and substitution constituents of block layers. This result rules out the possibility of antiferromagnetic correlation and supports the structural origin of shadow band. ARPES experiments on optimally doped La1.85Sr0.15CuO4 also clarified the…
We report that the doping and temperature dependence of photoemission spectra near the Brillouin zone boundary of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta exhibit unexpected sensitivity to the superfluid density. In the superconducting state, the photoemission peak intensity as a function of doping scales with the superfluid density and the condensation energy. As a function of temperature, the peak intensity shows an abrupt behavior near the superconducting phase transition temperature where phase coherence sets in, rather than near the temperature where the gap opens. This anomalous manifestation of collective e…
The improved resolution of laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) allows reliable access to fine structures in the spectrum. We present a systematic, doping-dependent study of a recently discovered low-energy kink in the nodal dispersion of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d (Bi-2212), which demonstrates the ubiquity and robustness of this kink in underdoped Bi-2212. The renormalization of the nodal velocity due to this kink becomes stronger with underdoping, revealing that the nodal Fermi velocity is non-universal, in contrast to assumed phenomenology. This is used together with laser-ARP…
Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) presents significant simplications in analyzing strictly two-dimensional (2D) materials, but even the most anisotropic physical systems display some residual three-dimensionality. Here we demonstrate how this third dimension manifests itself in ARPES spectra of quasi-2D materials by considering the example of the cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8}$ (Bi2212). The intercell, interlayer hopping, which is responsible for $k_z$-dispersion of the bands, is found to induce an irreducible broadening to the ARPES lineshapes with a characteristic depende…
We present an angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) doping dependence study of the n-type cuprate superconductor Nd_2-xCe_xCuO_4, from the half-filled Mott-insulator to the T_c=24K superconductor. In Nd2CuO4, we reveal the charge-transfer band (CTB) for the first time. As electrons are doped into the system, this feature's intensity decreases with the concomitant formation of near-E_F spectral weight. At low doping, the Fermi surface is an electron-pocket (with volume ~ x) centered at (pi,0). Further doping leads to the creation of a new hole-like Fermi surface (volume ~ 1+x) centered at (pi,pi…
Based on the analysis of the measurement data of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and optics, we show that the charge transfer gap is significantly smaller than the optical one and is reduced by doping in electron doped cuprate superconductors. This leads to a strong charge fluctuation between the Zhang-Rice singlet and the upper Hubbard bands. The basic model for describing this system is a hybridized two-band $t$-$J$ model. In the symmetric limit where the corresponding intra- and inter-band hopping integrals are equal to each other, this two-band model is equivalent to the …
The crossover from Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superconductivity to Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) is difficult to realize in quantum materials because, unlike in ultracold atoms, one cannot tune the pairing interaction. We realize the BCS-BEC crossover in a nearly compensated semimetal Fe$_{1+y}$Se$_x$Te$_{1-x}$ by tuning the Fermi energy, $ε_F$, via chemical doping, which permits us to systematically change $Δ/ ε_F$ from 0.16 to 0.5 were $Δ$ is the superconducting (SC) gap. We use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to measure the Fermi energy, the SC gap and characteristic chang…
The band structures of pure and hole doped La$_2$CuO$_4$ with antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin-fluctuations are calculated and compared to spectral weights of ARPES. It is shown that observations of coexisting Fermi surface (FS) arcs and closed FS pockets are consistent with modulated AFM spin fluctuations of varying wave lengths. Large variations of strong spin fluctuations make the outer part of the FS break diffuse at low doping. This part of the FS is suppressed at high doping when spin fluctuations are weak. The resulting superimposed spectral weight has features both from FS arcs and closed …
We have made a high-resolution photoemission study of La2-xSrxCuO4 in a wide hole concentration (x) range from a heavily overdoped metal to an undoped insulator. As x decreases, the spectral density of states at the chemical potential (μ) is suppressed with an x-dependence similar to the suppression of the electronic specific heat coefficient. In the underdoped region, the spectra show a pseudogap structure on the energy scale of 0.1 eV. The width of the pseudogap increases with decreasing x following the x-dependence of the characteristic temperatures of the magnetic susceptibility and the Ha…
The discovery of infinite-layer nickelate superconductors has spurred enormous interest. While the Ni$^{1+}$ cations possess nominally the same 3$d^9$ configuration as Cu$^{2+}$ in cuprates, the electronic structure variances remain elusive. Here, we present a soft x-ray photoemission spectroscopy study on parent and doped infinite-layer Pr-nickelate thin films with a doped perovskite reference. By identifying the Ni character with resonant photoemission and comparison to density functional theory + U (on-site Coulomb repulsion energy) calculations, we estimate U ~5 eV, smaller than the charge…
We have studied the electronic structure of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ ($x$=0.08), which fails to become a superconductor in spite of the formal hole doping like Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$, by photoemission spectroscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). With decreasing temperature, a transition from the paramagnetic phase to the antiferromagnetic phase was clearly observed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. XAS results indicated that the substituted Mn atoms form a strongly hybridized ground state. Resonance-photoemission spectra at the Mn $L_{3}$ edge reveal…
The evolution of Ca$_{2-x}$Na$_{x}$CuO$_{2}$Cl$_{2}$ from Mott insulator to superconductor was studied using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. By measuring both the excitations near the Fermi energy as well as non-bonding states, we tracked the doping dependence of the electronic structure and the chemical potential with unprecedented precision. Our work reveals failures in the conventional quasiparticle theory, including the broad lineshapes of the insulator and the apparently paradoxical shift of the chemical potential within the Mott gap. To resolve this, we develop a model where t…
The experimental finding of an ubiquitous kink in the nodal direction of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopies of superconducting cuprates has been reproduced theoretically. Our model is built upon the Migdal-Eliashberg theory for the electron self-energy within the phonon-coupling scenario. Following this perturbative approach, a numerical evaluation of the bare band dispersion energy in terms of the electron-phonon coupling parameter $λ$ allows a unified description of the nodal-kink effect. Our study reveals that distinction between $λ$ and the technically defined mass-enhancement par…
