We use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Ir L3 edge to study the effect of hole doping upon the Jeff=1/2 Mott-insulating state in Sr2IrO4, via Rh replacement of the Ir site. The spin-wave gap, associated with XY-type spin-exchange anisotropy, collapses with increasing Rh content, prior to the suppression of the Mott-insulating state and in contrast to electron doping via La substitution of the Sr site. At the same time, despite heavy damping, the d-d excitation spectra retain their overall amplitude and dispersion character. A careful study of the spin-wave spectrum reveals that deviations from the J1-J2-J3 Heisenberg used to model the pristine system disappear at intermediate doping levels. These findings are interpreted in terms of a modulation of Ir-Ir correlations due to the influence of Rh impurities upon nearby Ir wave functions, even as the single-band Jeff=1/2 model remains valid up to full carrier delocalization. They underline the importance of the transition metal site symmetry when doping pseudospin systems such as Sr2IrO4.
We have grown epitaxial Cr-doped V$_2$O$_3$ thin films with Cr concentrations between $0$ and $20\%$ on $(0001)$-Al$_2$O$_3$ by oxygen-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. For the highly doped samples (> $3\%$), a regular and monotonous increase of the resistance with decreasing temperature is measured. Strikingly, in the low doping samples (between $1\%$ and $3\%$), a collapse of the insulating state is observed with a reduction of the low temperature resistivity by up to 5 orders of magnitude. A vacuum annealing at high temperature of the films recovers the low temperature insulating state for d…
Superconductivity in underdoped cuprates emerges from an unusual electronic state characterised by nodal quasiparticles and an antinodal pseudogap. The relation between this state and superconductivity is intensely studied but remains controversial. The discrimination between competing theoretical models is hindered by a lack of electronic structure data from related doped Mott insulators. Here we report the doping evolution of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, a close analogue to underdoped cuprates. We demonstrate that metallicity emerges from a rapid collapse of the Mott gap wit…
A novel ferromagnetic transition, accompanied by carrier density collapse, is found in doped charge-transfer insulators with strong electron-phonon coupling. The transition is driven by an exchange interaction of polaronic carriers with localized spins; the strength of the interaction determines whether the transition is first or second order. A giant drop in the number of current carriers during the transition, which is a consequence of bound pairs formation in the paramagnetic phase close to the transition, is extremely sensitive to an external magnetic field. This carrier density collapse d…
We investigate the doping dependence of the nanoscale electronic and magnetic inhomogeneities in the hole-doping range 0.002<x<0.1 of cobalt based perovskites, La{1-x}Sr_xCoO_3. Using single crystal inelastic neutron scattering and magnetization measurements we show that the lightly doped system exhibits magneto-electronic phase separation in form of spin-state polarons. Higher hole doping leads to a decay of spin-state polarons in favor of larger-scale magnetic clusters, due to competing ferromagnetic correlations of Co^{3+} ions which are formed by neighboring polarons. The present data give…
We explore mechanisms of orbital order decay in doped Mott insulators $R_{1-x}$(Sr,Ca)$_x$VO$_3$ ($R=\,$Pr,Y,La) caused by charged (Sr,Ca) defects. Our unrestricted Hartree-Fock analysis focuses on the combined effect of random, charged impurities and associated doped holes up to $x=0.5$. The study is based on a generalized multi-band Hubbard model for the relevant vanadium $t_{2g}$ electrons, and includes the long-range (i) Coulomb potentials of defects and (ii) electron-electron interactions. We show that the rotation of occupied $t_{2g}$ orbitals, induced by the electric field of defects, i…
Disentangling the relationship between the insulating state with a charge gap and the magnetic order in an antiferromagnetic (AF) Mott insulator remains difficult due to inherent phase separation as the Mott state is perturbed. Measuring magnetic and electronic properties at the atomic length scales would provide crucial insight, but this is yet to be experimentally achieved. Here we use spectroscopic-imaging spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (SP-STM) to visualize periodic spin-resolved modulations originating from the AF order in a relativistic Mott insulator Sr2IrO4, and study the…
We study the superconducting state of the hole-doped two-dimensional Hubbard model using Cellular Dynamical Mean Field Theory, with the Lanczos method as impurity solver. In the under-doped regime, we find a natural decomposition of the one-particle (photoemission) energy-gap into two components. The gap in the nodal regions, stemming from the anomalous self-energy, decreases with decreasing doping. The antinodal gap has an additional contribution from the normal component of the self-energy, inherited from the normal-state pseudogap, and it increases as the Mott insulating phase is approached…
We present a three-band Hubbard Hamiltonian and the associated Cu K-edge RIXS spectra for electron and hole doped cuprates over a wide range of energy and momentum transfers. By comparing computed spectra for the unfilled case with the corresponding results for 15% electron or hole doping at two different values of the effective Hubbard parameter U, generic signatures of the collapse of the magnetic gap and the characteristic momentum dependencies and evolution of the spectra with doping are identified. Available RIXS data support the gap collapse scenario for electron doped cuprates, but the …
Motivated by the recent atomic-scale scanning tunneling microscope (STM) observation for a spatially localized in-gap state in an electron doped Mott insulator, we evaluate the local electronic state of the Hubbard model on the square lattice using the cluster perturbation theory. An in-gap state is found to exist below the upper Hubbard band around the dopant lattice site, which is consistent with the STM measurements. The emergence of this local in-gap state is accompanied with a rapid reduction of the double occupancy of electrons. A similar in-gap state is also found to exist on the triang…
We present a computation of Cu K-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra for electron-doped cuprates which includes coupling to bosonic fluctuations. Comparison with experiment over a wide range of energy and momentum transfers allows us to identify the signatures of three key normal-state energy scales: the pseudogap, charge transfer gap, and Mott gap. The calculations involve a three band Hubbard Hamiltonian based on Cu $d_{x^2-y^2}$ and O $p_x$, $p_y$ orbitals, with a self-energy correction which arises due to spin and charge fluctuations. Our theory reproduces characteristi…
We reinvestigate a doped antiferromagnetic Mott insulator based on the slave-fermion approach of the t-J model, where antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations and doped holes are described by bosonic spinons and fermionic holons, respectively. Earlier studies have shown that an effective field theory for the doped antiferromagnetic Mott insulator is given by a non-relativistic fermion (holon) U(1) gauge theory for charge dynamics and a relativistic boson (spinon) U(1) gauge theory for spin dynamics, thus allowing an anomalous metallic phase where bosonic spinons are gapped away from an antiferromag…
We have analyzed the coexisting charge and orbital ordering in half-doped manganites using a model which includes Coulomb and Jahn-Teller orbital polarization interactions. Most surprisingly, the gap in the optical conductivity is reduced by both on-site and intersite Coulomb interactions, but increases and explains the experimental results when the Jahn-Teller terms with orbital polarization are considered. The origin of this behavior is explained within a molecular model which arises in the limit of extreme topological frustration, when single electrons are confined to molecular units consis…
Aliovalent rare earth substitution into the alkaline earth site of CaFe2As2 single-crystals is used to fine-tune structural, magnetic and electronic properties of this iron-based superconducting system. Neutron and single crystal x-ray scattering experiments indicate that an isostructural collapse of the tetragonal unit cell can be controllably induced at ambient pressures by choice of substituent ion size. This instability is driven by the interlayer As-As anion separation, resulting in an unprecedented thermal expansion coefficient of $180\times 10^{-6}$ K$^{-1}$. Electrical transport and ma…
Predictions are made for the momentum- and carrier-dependent degradation of the Mott gap upon doping in high-Tc cuprates as would be observed in Cu K-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). The two-dimensional Hubbard model with second- and third-nearest-neighbor hopping terms has been studied by numerical exact diagonalization. Special emphasis is placed on the particle-hole asymmetry of the Mott gap excitations. We argue that the Mott gap excitations observed by RIXS are significantly influenced by the interaction between charge carriers and antiferromagnetic correlations.
Magnetic phase transitions under hydrostatic pressures in spin gap systems TlCu$_{0.988}$Mg$_{0.012}$Cl$_3$ and KCu$_{0.973}$Mg$_{0.027}$Cl$_3$ were investigated by magnetization measurements. The present doped systems exhibit impurity-induced magnetic orderings. With increasing pressure, ordering temperature $T_{\rm N}$ increases. With a further increase in pressure, the present systems undergo phase transitions to uniform antiferromagnetic phases due to the closing of the triplet gap in the intact dimers. The crossover from the impurity-induced ordered phase to the uniform antiferromagnetic …
The nickelate compound Y_{2}BaNiO_{5} is a spin-1 Haldane-gap antiferromagnet. The compound is doped with holes on replacing the off-chain Y^{3+} ions by Ca^{2+} ions. Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiments reveal the existence of sub-gap states on doping. A recent INS experiment provides evidence for an incommensurate double-peaked structure factor S(q) corresponding to the sub-gap states. In this paper, we formulate a microscopic theory for the origin of the incommensurate peak.
We investigate how the antiferromagnetic Mott insulator evolves into the d-wave BCS superconductor through hole doping. Allowing spin fluctuations in the strong coupling approach, we find a spin-gapped incoherent metal with preformed pairing as an intermediate phase between the antiferromagnetic Mott insulator and d-wave superconductor. This non-Fermi liquid metal is identified with an infrared stable fixed point in the spin-decomposition gauge theory, analogous to the spin liquid insulator in the slave-boson gauge theory. We consider the single particle spectrum and dynamical spin susceptibil…
In this paper, we investigate analytically the experimental observations of structural collapse and Tc enhancement in the rare earth-doped 122-type iron-based pnictide superconductors [S. R. Saha et.al. Phys. Rev. B 85, 024525 (2012), arXiv:1105.4798 (2011); B. Lv et al. PNAS 108, 15705 (2011).]. Based on the real-space effective c-axis lattice constant theory of superconductivity [X. Q. Huang, arXiv:1001.5067], it is shown that the abrupt c-axis reduction of the superconductors is due to the structural phase transition (an ultra-short-range symmetry breaking) of the charge stripe lattice. The…
We address the role played by charged defects in doped Mott insulators with active orbital degrees of freedom. It is observed that defects feature a rather complex and rich physics, which is well captured by a degenerate Hubbard model extended by terms that describe crystal-field splittings and orbital-lattice coupling, as well as by terms generated by defects such as the Coulomb potential terms that act both on doped holes and on electrons within occupied orbitals at undoped sites. We show that the multiplet structure of the excited states generated in such systems by strong electron interact…
Magnetic phase transition under hydrostatic pressure in TlCu$_{0.988}$Mg$_{0.012}$Cl$_3$ was investigated by magnetization measurements. The parent compound TlCuCl$_3$ is a coupled spin dimer system, which undergoes a pressure-induced quantum phase transition from a gapped ground state to an antiferromagnetic state at $P_{\rm c} = 0.42$ kbar due to the shrinkage of the gap. At ambient pressure, the present doped system exhibits impurity-induced magnetic ordering at $T_{\rm N}=2.5$ K. With increasing pressure, $T_{\rm N}$ increases. This is because the effective exchange interaction $J_{\rm eff…
Based on an effective model of a doped antiferromagnetic Mott insulator, we show that a doped hole will induce a dipole-like spin configuration in a spin ordered phase at low doping. The kinetic energy of doped holes is severely frustrated and a hole-dipole object is actually localized or self-trapped in space. Without a balance from the kinetic energy, the long-range dipole-dipole interaction between doped holes will dominate the low-energy physics, leading to an inhomogeneity instability as hole-dipoles collapse into stripes. Both antiphase metallic stripes of quarter-filling and antiphase i…
We study the evolution of the single-particle spectrum with electron doping in a scheme which adds multiple exchange of transverse spin excitations to the mean-field antiferromagnetic insulator. Away from half-filling small Fermi surface pockets appear first around the X-points, and simultaneously new spectral weight grows in the insulating gap. With further doping the in-gap states develop the character of a renormalized quasiparticle band near the chemical potential. The essential features in momentum-energy space agree well with recent studies using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy…
Using the density matrix renormalization-group technique, we calculate the impurity energy levels for two different effective models of off-chain doping for quasi-one-dimensional Heisenberg chain compound Y$_2$ Ba Ni O$_5$: ferromagnetic bond doping and antiferromagnetic site spin-1/2 doping. Thresholds of the impurity strength for the appearance of localized states are found for both models. However, the ground-state and low-energy excitations for weak impurity strength are different for these two models and the difference can be detected by experiments.
There is a clear discrepancy among the energy-gap values for different 90 K cuprates, inferred from tunneling measurements. By using the phase diagram for hole-doped cuprates we show that tunneling measurements performed on 90 K cuprates, simply, detect two different energy gaps: the pairing gap and the coherent gap, which are identical in conventional superconductors. We find that there are two reasons why tunneling measurements show in one cuprate exclusively the coherent gap while, in another cuprate, they show the pairing gap: (i) the number of CuO2 planes per unit cell in the cuprate, and…
Polaron spectral functions are computed for highly doped graphene-on-substrate and other atomically thin graphitic systems using the diagrammatic Monte Carlo technique. The specific aim is to investigate the effects of interaction on spectral functions when the symmetry between sub-lattices of a honeycomb lattice has been broken by the substrate or ionicity, inducing a band gap. Introduction of electron-phonon coupling leads to several polaronic features, such as band-flattening and changes in particle lifetimes. At the K point, differences between energies on each sub-lattice increase with el…
Experiments on the $Gd^{3+}$ Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) in the filled skutterudite $Ce_{1-x}Gd_{x}Fe_{4}P_{12}$ ($x \approx 0.001$), at temperatures where the host resistivity manifests a smooth insulator-metal crossover, provides evidence of the underlying Kondo physics associated with this system. At low temperatures (below $T \approx K$), $Ce_{1-x}Gd_{x}Fe_{4}P_{12}$ behaves as a Kondo-insulator with a relatively large hybridization gap, and the $Gd^{3+}$ ESR spectra displays a fine structure with lorentzian line shape, typical of insulating media. The electronic gap is attributed to the…
We present data analyses of the thermal conductivity and specific heat of electron-doped Pr1.85Ce0.15CuO4-y. The zero-field thermal conductivity and specific heat of this optimally electrondoped system can be only explained by a nodeless gap symmetry. The magnetic-field dependence of the electronic specific heat in the vortex state is in quantitative agreement with an s-wave theory. Our quantitative data analyses provide bulk evidence for a nodeless gap symmetry in optimally electron-doped cuprates.
Single crystals of the lightly-doped spin-Peierls system Cu(1-x)Cd(x)GeO3 have been studied using bulk susceptibility, x-ray diffraction, and inelastic neutron scattering techniques. We investigate the triplet gap in the magnetic excitation spectrum of this quasi-one dimensional quantum antiferromagnet, and its relation to the spin-Peierls dimerisation order parameter. We employ two different theoretical forms to model the inelastic neutron scattering cross section and chi''(Q,omega), and show the sensitivity of the gap energy to the choice of chi''(Q,omega). We find that a finite gap exists a…
An antiferromagnetic (AF) spin fluctuation induced pairing model is proposed for the electron-doped cuprate superconductors. It suggests that, similar to the hole-doped side, the superconducting gap function is monotonic d_{x^2-y^2}-wave and explains why the observed gap function has a nonmonotonic d_{x^2-y^2}-wave behavior when an AF order is taken into account. Dynamical spin susceptibility is calculated and shown to be in good agreement with the experiment. This gives a strong support to the proposed model.
We report results of an electron spin resonance (ESR) study of a spin-gap antiferromagnet (C$_4$H$_{12}$N$_2$)(Cu$_2$Cl$_6$) (nicknamed PHCC) with chlorine ions partially substituted by bromine. We found that up to 10% of nominal doping the contribution of the random defects to the absorption spectra remains at about 0.1% per copper ion, almost the same as in the pure system. Instead, a particular kind of ESR absorption corresponding to gapless S=1 triplets is observed at low temperatures in samples with high nominal bromine content x>5%. Increase of bromine concentration also leads to the sys…

The filling-controlled metal-insulator transition (MIT) in a two-dimensional Mott-Hubbard system La1.17-xPbxVS3.17 has been studied by photoemission spectroscopy. With Pb substitution x, chemical potential mu abruptly jumps by ~ 0.07 eV between x=0.15 and 0.17, indicating that a charge gap is opened at x ~= 0.16 in agreement with the Mott insulating state of the d2 configuration. When holes or electrons are doped into the Mott insulator of x ~= 0.16, the gap is filled and the photoemission spectral weight at mu, rho(mu), gradually increases in a similar way to the electronic specific heat coef…
The magnetization process in the one-dimensional Kondo lattice model for the doped (n_{c}<1) case is studied by the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. A rapid increase of the magnetization is caused by the collapse of the intersite incommensurate correlation of f spins. On the contrary, the intrasite f-c singlet correlation survives in the larger magnetic field. The crossover from large to small Fermi surfaces for majority and minority spins is observed, whereas the Fermi surfaces are always contributed by f spins. A magnetization plateau appears with the magnitude of 1-n_{c}.…
Low dimensional spin-1/2 systems with antiferromagnetic interactions display very innovative features, driven by strong quantum fluctuations. In particular, geometrical effects or competing magnetic interactions can give rise to the formation of a spin gap between the singlet ground state and the first excited triplet state. In this chapter, we focus on the numerical investigation of such systems by Exact Diagonalisation methods and some extensions of it including a simultaneous mean-field treatment of some perturbative couplings. After a presentation of the Lanczos algorithm and a description…
We study evolution of metals from Mott insulators in the carrier-doped 2D Hubbard model using a cluster extension of the dynamical mean-field theory. While the conventional metal is simply characterized by the Fermi surface (pole of the Green function G), interference of the zero surfaces of G with the pole surfaces becomes crucial in the doped Mott insulators. Mutually interfering pole and zero surfaces are dramatically transferred over the Mott gap, when lightly doped holes synergetically loosen the doublon-holon binding. The heart of the Mott physics such as the pseudogap, hole pockets, Fer…
The thermal conductivity $κ$ is measured in a series of Cu_1-xMg_xGeO_3 single crystals in magnetic fields up to 16 T. It has turned out that heat transport by spin excitations is coherent for lightly doped samples, in which the spin-Peierls (SP) transition exists, at temperatures well above the SP transition temperature T_SP. Depression of this spin heat transport appears below T^*, at which the spin gap locally opens. T^* is not modified with Mg-doping and that T^* for each Mg-doped sample remains as high as T_SP of pure CuGeO_3, in contrast to T_SP which is strongly suppressed with Mg-dopin…
Spin gap in optimally-doped YBCO was investigated by inelastic neutron scattering. We found that q-integrated spectral weight in the vicinity of the spin gap has a shape of a step function at 10K with sharp resolution-limited onset at 33 meV, i.e. there is no observable spectral weight at 31 meV but full spectral weight at 35 meV. The spin gap does not soften or "fill in" as the temperature is increased to Tc. Above Tc we find no evidence for q-dependent magnetic signal at 35 meV.
We have measured the superconducting gap Ds in optimally doped samples of BSCCO, TBCCO, HBCCO and HSCCO by Andreev and tunnelling spectroscopy and by ARPES. We have found that the low-temperature value of the gap within experimental errors is linearly increasing with the number n of CuO2 layers in the unit cell of the investigated HTSC-families (n < 4)
The recent observation of fully-gapped superconductivity in Yb doped CeCoIn5 poses a paradox, for the disappearance of nodes suggests that they are accidental, yet d-wave symmetry with protected nodes is we ll established by experiment. Here, we show that composite pairing provides a natural resolution: in this scenario, Yb doping drives a Lifshitz transition of the nodal Fermi surface, forming a fully-gapped d-wave molecular superfluid of composite pairs. The T4 dependence of the penetration depth associated with the sound mode of this condensate is in accord with observation.
For electron-doped cuprates, the strong suppression of antiferromagnetic spin correlation by efficient reduction annealing by the "protect-annealing" method leads to superconductivity not only with lower Ce concentrations but also with higher transition temperatures. To reveal the nature of this superconducting state, we have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements of protect-annealed electron-doped superconductors Pr$_{1.3-x}$La$_{0.7}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ and directly investigated the superconducting gap. The gap was found to be consistent with $d$-wave symmetry, sugges…
In the under- to optimal-doping regimes of electron-doped cuprates, it was theoretically suspected that there is a coexistence of superconducting (SC) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) orders. The quasi-particle excitations could be gapped by both orders, and the effective gap is non-monotonic d-wave-like in the momentum space. Alternatively the gap was also speculated as a pure pairing gap. Using an effective microscopic model, we consider the manifestation of the quasi-particle gap in the electronic Raman spectra in a range of doping levels, where the relative strength of the SC and AFM order para…
We address an important issue as to whether bulk-sensitive data of Raman scattering, optical conductivity, magnetic penetration depth, directional point-contact tunneling spectra, and nonmagnetic pair-breaking effect in optimally electron-doped Nd_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_{4-y} support a nodeless s-wave or d-wave superconducting gap. We numerically calculate Raman intensities, directional point-contact tunneling spectra, and nonmagnetic pair-breaking effect in terms of both s-wave and d-wave gap symmetries. We find that all these bulk-sensitive data are in quantitative agreement with a nearly isotro…
We argue that the experimentally observed nonmonotonic gap in electron-doped cuprates at optimal doping is the lowest quasiparticle excitation energy in the coexisting antiferromagnetic (AF) and superconducting (SC) state. The idea is implemented by studying the coexistence of AF and SC orders with the t-t'-t''-J model. Although the pairing gap itself is assumed to be the simplest $d$ wave which is monotonic, we have found that the quasiparticle excitation gap in the coexisting state is nonmonotonic, with the maxima around the hot spots where the Fermi surface is missing due to the AF gap. Wit…
We show that the Kondo chain away from half-filling has a spin gap upon the introduction of an additional direct Heisenberg coupling between localized spins. This is understood in the weak-Kondo-coupling limit of the Heisenberg-Kondo lattice model by bosonization and in the strong-coupling limit by a mapping to a modified t-J model. Only for certain ranges of filling and Heisenberg coupling does the spin gap phase extend from weak to strong coupling.
The Kohn-Luttinger mechanism for superconductivity is investigated in a model for the electron doped cuprates. The symmetry of the order parameter of the superconducting phase is determined as a function of the geometry of the Fermi surface together with the structure of the electron-hole susceptibility. It is found to remain d_{x^2-y^2} wave within a large doping range. The shape of the gap anisotropy evolves with doping, with the maximum gap moving away from (pi ,0), in good agreement with recent experiments. As the shift of the maximum increases, a crossover to d_{xy}-symmetry is found.
Angle-dependent studies of the gap function provide evidence for the coexistence of two distinct gaps in hole doped cuprates, where the gap near the nodal direction scales with the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$, while that in the antinodal direction scales with the pseudogap temperature. We present model calculations which show that most of the characteristic features observed in the recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) as well as scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) two-gap studies are consistent with a scenario in which the pseudogap has a non-superconductin…
Angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) data from the electron doped cuprate superconductor Sm$_{1.86}$Ce$_{0.14}$CuO$_4$ shows a much stronger pseudo-gap or "hot-spot" effect than that observed in other optimally doped $n$-type cuprates. Importantly, these effects are strong enough to drive the zone-diagonal states below the chemical potential, implying that d-wave superconductivity in this compound would be of a novel "nodeless" gap variety. The gross features of the Fermi surface topology and low energy electronic structure are found to be well described by reconstruction of bands by a $\sqrt{…
The low-energy excitations of the lightly doped cuprates were studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. A finite gap was measured over the entire Brillouin zone, including along the d_{x^2 - y^2} nodal line. This effect was observed to be generic to the normal states of numerous cuprates, including hole-doped La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} and Ca_{2-x}Na_{x}CuO_{2}Cl_{2} and electron-doped Nd_{2-x}Ce_{x}CuO_{4}. In all compounds, the gap appears to close with increasing carrier doping. We consider various scenarios to explain our results, including the possible effects of chemical disorder,…
We report the first ^{75}As-NMR study on a single crystal of the hole-doped iron-pnictide superconductor Ba_{0.7}K_{0.3}Fe_2As_{2} (T_c = 31.5 K). We find that the Fe antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations are anisotropic and are weaker compared to underdoped copper-oxides or cobalt-oxide superconductors. The spin lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 decreases below T_c with no coherence peak and shows a step-wise variation at low temperatures, which is indicative of multiple superconducting gaps, as in the electron-doped Pr(La)FeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$. Furthermore, no evidence was obtained for a microscopi…
The problem of the symmetry of the superconducting pairing and the form of the gap function in the electron-doped superconductors is reconsidered within the temperature-cutoff functional renormalization group approach combined with the Bethe-Salpeter equations. The momentum dependence of the order parameter for antiferromagnetic and superconducting instabilities in these compounds is analyzed. The gap function in the antiferromagnetic (particle-hole) channel has its maxima at the hot-spots, or at the diagonal of the Brilloin zone in their absence. The wavefunction in the singlet superconductin…
We present in-plane infrared reflectance measurement on two superconducting cuprates with relatively low T$_c$: a nearly optimally-doped Bi$_2$Sr$_{1.6}$La$_{0.4}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ with T$_c$=33 K and an underdoped La$_{1.89}$Sr$_{0.11}$CuO$_4$ with T$_c$=30 K. The measurement clearly reveals that the superconducting energy gap is distinct from the pseudogap. They have different energy scales and appear at different temperatures. The results suggest that the pseudogap is not a precursor to the superconducting state. The data also challenge the longstanding viewpoint that the superconductivity within…
We report the Hall resistivity, $ρ_{xy}$ of polycrystalline SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$ for four different fluorine concentrations from the onset of superconductivity through the collapse of the structural phase transition. For the two more highly-doped samples, $ρ_{xy}$ is linear in magnetic field up to 50 T with only weak temperature dependence, reminiscent of a simple Fermi liquid. For the lightly-doped samples with $x<0.15$, we find a low temperature regime characterized $ρ_{xy}(H)$ being both non-linear in magnetic field and strongly temperature dependent even though the Hall angle is small. T…
The momentum and temperature dependence of the superconducting gap and pseudogap in optimally-doped Bi$_2$Sr$_{1.6}$La$_{0.4}$CuO$_6$ superconductor is investigated by super-high resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The measured energy gap in the superconducting state exhibits a standard {\it d}-wave form. Pseudogap opens above T$_c$ over a large portion of the Fermi surface with a "Fermi arc" formed near the nodal region. In the region outside of the "Fermi arc", the pseudogap has the similar magnitude and momentum dependence as the gap in the superconducting stat…
The superconducting, transport, and structural properties of optimally electron-doped BaFe$_{1.9}$Ni$_{0.1}$As$_{2}$ are investigated by combining the electrical resistance and synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements at high pressures. The superconducting transition temperature of this system is found to decrease in a similar way of the axial ratio of $c/a$ with increasing pressure but vanishing at a critical pressure of 7.5 GPa where $c/a$ has a dip and an isostructural transformation from a tetragonal to a collapsed tetragonal phase takes place. The resistance is found to obey a linear te…
The in-plane thermal conductivity $κ$ of electron-doped iron-arsenide superconductor BaFe$_{1.9}$Ni$_{0.1}$As$_2$ ($T_c$ = 20.3 K) single crystal was measured down to 70 mK. In zero field, the absence of a residual linear term $κ_0/T$ at $ T \to 0$ is strong evidence for nodeless superconducting gap. In magnetic field, $κ_0/T$ shows a slow field dependence up to $H$ = 14.5 T ($\approx$ 30% $H_{c_2}$). This is consistent with the superconducting gap structure demonstrated by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments in BaFe$_{1.85}$Co$_{0.15}$As$_2$ ($T_c$ = 25.5 K), where isotropic…
Scanning tunneling spectroscopic studies of $Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_x)_2As_2$ (x = 0.06, 0.12) single crystals reveal direct evidence for predominantly two-gap superconductivity. These gaps decrease with increasing temperature and vanish above the superconducting transition $T_c$. The two-gap nature and the slightly doping- and energy-dependent quasiparticle scattering interferences near the wave-vectors $(\pm π, 0)$ and $(0, \pm π)$ are consistent with sign-changing $s$-wave superconductivity. The excess zero-bias conductance and the large gap-to-$T_c$ ratios suggest dominant unitary impurity scatteri…
The thermal conductivity of the doped topological crystalline insulator, Sn$_{0.6}$In$_{0.4}$Te superconducting single crystal with $T_c =$ 4.1 K, was measured down to 50 mK. It is found that the residual linear term $κ_0/T$ is negligible in zero magnetic field. The $κ_0/T$ shows a slow field dependence at low magnetic field. These results suggest that the superconducting gap is nodeless, unless there exist point nodes with directions perpendicular to the heat current. Due to its high-symmetry fcc crystal structure of Sn$_{0.6}$In$_{0.4}$Te, however, such point nodes can be excluded. Therefore…
The phase diagram of order parameters for pairing and phase coherence in hole-doped cuprates is discussed. By examining carefully some recent inelastic neutron scattering data obtained on hole-doped cuprates and heavy fermion compound UPd2Al3 in which the superconductivity is mediated by spin fluctuations, we conclude that the coherent gap in hole-doped cuprates has most likely the magnetic origin and scales with Tc, on average, as 2Dc/kBTc = 5.4. We discuss a model of the superconductivity in hole-doped cuprates and the symmetries of two order parameters.
