In this paper, we establish that Majorana zero modes emerging from a topological band structure of a chain of magnetic atoms embedded in a superconductor can be distinguished from trivial localized zero energy states that may accidentally form in this system using spin resolved measurements. To demonstrate this key Majorana diagnostics, we study the spin composition of magnetic impurity induced in-gap Shiba states in a superconductor using a quantum impurity model (at the mean-field level). By examining the spin and spectral densities in the context of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) particle-hole symmetry, we derive a sum rule that relates the spin densities of localized Shiba states with those in the normal state without superconductivity. Extending our investigations to ferromagnetic chain of magnetic impurities, we identify key features of the spin properties of the extended Shiba state bands, as well as those associated with a localized Majorana end mode when the effect of spin-orbit interaction is included. We then formulate a phenomenological theory for the measurement of the local spin densities with spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) techniques. By combining the calculated spin densities and the measurement theory, we show that spin-polarized STM measurements can reveal a sharp contrast in spin polarization between an accidentally-zero-energy trivial Shiba state and a Majorana zero mode in a topological superconducting phase in atomic chains. We further confirm our results with numerical simulations that address generic parameter settings.
Motivated by recent proposals to realize Majorana bound states in chains and arrays of magnetic atoms deposited on top of a superconductor, we study the topological properties of various chain structures, ladders and two-dimensional arrangements exhibiting magnetic helices. We show that magnetic domain walls where the chirality of a magnetic helix is inverted support two protected Majorana states giving rise to a tunneling conductance peak twice the height of a single Majorana state. The topological properties of coupled chains exhibit nontrivial behaviour as a function of the number of chains…
Magnetic atoms on superconductors induce localized Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) bound states. The proposal that topological superconductivity and Majorana modes can be engineered in arrays of hybridizing YSR states has led to their intense investigation. Here, we study Majorana modes emerging from bands of hybridized YSR states in artificially constructed Manganese (Mn) chains on superconducting Niobium (Nb). By controlling the chain geometry on the single atom level, we can measure the interaction-induced energy splitting of Majorana modes from both chain's ends with increasing chain length. We fin…
We propose an easy-to-build easy-to-detect scheme for realizing Majorana fermions at the ends of a chain of magnetic atoms on the surface of a superconductor. Model calculations show that such chains can be easily tuned between trivial and topological ground state. In the latter, spatial resolved spectroscopy can be used to probe the Majorana fermion end states. Decoupled Majorana bound states can form even in short magnetic chains consisting of only tens of atoms. We propose scanning tunneling microscopy as the ideal technique to fabricate such systems and probe their topological properties.
We consider theoretically tunneling characteristic of a junction between a normal metal and a chain of coupled Majorana bound states generated at crossings between topological and non-topological superconducting sections, as a result of, for example, disorder in nanowires. While an isolated Majorana state supports a resonant Andreev process, yielding a zero bias differential conductance peak of height 2e^2/h, the situation with more coupled Majorana states is distinctively different with both zeros and 2e^2/h peaks in the differential conductance. We derive a general expression for the current…
Floquet Majorana edge modes capture the topological features of periodically driven superconductors. We present a Kitaev chain with multiple time periodic driving and demonstrate how the avoidance of bands crossing is altered, which gives rise to new regions supporting Majorana edge modes. A one dimensional generalized method was proposed to predict Majorana edge modes via the Zak phase of the Floquet bands. We also study the time independent effective Hamiltonian at high frequency limit and introduce diverse index to characterize topological phases with different relative phase between the mu…
We study theoretically a strongly type-II s-wave superconducting state of two-dimensional Dirac fermions in proximity to a ferromagnet having in-plane magnetization. It is shown that a magnetic domain wall can host a chain of equally spaced vortices in the superconducting order parameter, each of which binds a Majorana fermion state. The overlap integral of neighboring Majorana states is sensitive to the position of the chemical potential of the Dirac fermions. This leads to a characteristic V-shaped dependence of thermal conductivity of Majorana fermions on the chemical potential.
Majorana fermions are predicted to localize at the edge of a topological superconductor, a state of matter that can form when a ferromagnetic system is placed in proximity to a conventional superconductor with strong spin-orbit interaction. With the goal of realizing a one-dimensional topological superconductor, we have fabricated ferromagnetic iron (Fe) atomic chains on the surface of superconducting lead (Pb). Using high-resolution spectroscopic imaging techniques, we show that the onset of superconductivity, which gaps the electronic density of states in the bulk of the Fe chains, is accomp…
Topological superconductors are predicted to harbor exotic boundary states - Majorana zero-energy modes - whose non-Abelian braiding statistics present a new paradigm for the realization of topological quantum computing. Using low-temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS), we here report on the direct real-space visualization of chiral Majorana edge states in a monolayer topological superconductor, a prototypical magnet-superconductor hybrid system comprised of nano-scale Fe islands of monoatomic height on a Re(0001)-O(2$\times$1) surface. In particular, we demonstrate that interface e…
Motivated by the fact that the idealized Kitaev chain toy model and the experimental semiconductor-superconductor Majorana nanowire can both host the Majorana zero modes, we theoretically investigate the question to what extent the two models are equivalent or similar, using the perspective of the corresponding dual spin models for both. We start with the duality between the Kitaev chain and the transverse-field XY spin model through the Jordan-Wigner transformation with the goal of establishing the connection between the Kitaev chain and the nanowire. By applying the Jordan-Wigner transformat…
Semiconducting nanowires in proximity to superconductors are promising experimental systems for Majorana fermions, which may ultimately be used as building blocks for topological quantum computers. A serious challenge in the experimental realization of the Majorana fermions is the supression of topological superconductivity by disorder. We show that Majorana fermions protected by a robust topological gap can occur at the ends of a chain of quantum dots connected by s-wave superconductors. In the appropriate parameter regime, we establish that the quantum dot/superconductor system is equivalent…
We theoretically study bilayer superconducting topological insulator film, in which superconductivity exists for both top and bottom surface states. We show that an in-plane magnetic field can drive the system into Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LO) phase, where electrons are paired with finite momenta. The LO phase is topologically non-trivial and characterized by a Z 2 topological invariant, leading to a Majorana zero mode chain along the edge perpendicular to in-plane magnetic fields.
Several designs of inter-qubit coupling are considered. It is shown that by a combination of Josephson and capacitive coupling one can realize qubit interactions of variable spin content. Qubit arrays are discussed as models of quantum spin chains. In particular, a qubit model of the 1D quantum Ising spin chain is proposed. A realization of unpaired Majorana fermion states in this system is considered. It is shown that Majorana states are represented by spin flip excitations localized on the chain ends. Using unpaired Majorana states in qubit chains for decoherence protected quantum computing …
Motivated by the recent experimental observation of the topological Anderson insulator in disordered atomic wires based on the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model, we study disorder effects on a dimerized Kitaev superconductor chain which is regarded as the superconductor version of the SSH model. By computing the real-space winding number and the zero-bias differential conductance, we analyze the topological phase transitions occurring in a dimerized Kitaev superconductor chain with disorder. It is found that disorder can induce a topologically nontrivial superconductor phase hosting Majorana ze…
We study the magnetic structures and their connections with topological superconductivity due to proximity effect for coupled magnetic atomic chains deposited on a superconductor. Several magnetic phases are self-consistently determined, including both the coplanar and non-coplanar ones. For a $N$-chain triangular atomic ladder, topologically nontrivial superconducting states can always be realized, but strongly depend on its magnetic structure and the number of atomic chains. When $N$ is even, the topologically nontrivial states with noncoplanar structures are characterized by $\mathbb{Z}_{2}…
We study a chain of magnetic impurities on a conventional superconductor with spin-orbit coupling, treating the superconducting order fully self-consistently. We find and quantify strong hybridization between the topological edge Majorana bound states (MBSs) and in-gap Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states, which causes increasing energy oscillations as a function of magnetic impurity strength, even when the direct MBS overlap is negligible. By treating the MBS as a topological boundary state, dependent only on the effective mass gap, we arrive at a fully parameter-free functional form of the its loca…

We propose a new mechanism for topological superconductivity based on an antiferromagnetically ordered chain of magnetic atoms on the surface of a conventional superconductor. In a weak Zeeman field, a supercurrent in the substrate generates a staggered spin-current, which converts the preexisting topologically-unprotected Shiba states into Majorana fermions (MFs). The two experimental knobs can be finely tuned providing a platform with enhanced functionality for applications. Remarkably, the electronic spin-polarization of the arising edge MF wavefunctions depends solely on the parity of the …
Magnet-superconductor hybrid (MSH) systems are a key platform for custom-designed topological superconductors. Ideally, the ends of a one-dimensional MSH structure will host Majorana zero-modes (MZMs), the fundamental unit of topological quantum computing. However, some of the experiments with ferromagnetic chains show a more complicated picture. Due to tiny gap sizes and hence long coherence lengths MZMs might hybridize and lose their topological protection. Recent experiments on a niobium surface have shown that both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic chains may be engineered, with the magn…
We investigate the inhomogeneous Rashba chain coupled to a superconducting substrate, hosting the Majorana quasiparticles near its edges. We discuss its subgap spectrum and study how robust are the zero-energy quasiparticles against the diagonal and off-diagonal disorder. Studying the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological invariant we show that disorder induced transition from the topologically non-trivial to trivial phases is manifested by characteristic features in the spatially-resolved quasiparticle spectrum at zero energy. We provide evidence for the non-local nature of the zero-energy Majorana quas…
We study a realization of a 1d chain of Majorana bound states at the interfaces between alternating ferromagnetic and superconducting regions at a quantum spin Hall insulator edge. In the limit of well separated Majoranas, the system can be mapped to the transverse field Ising model. The disordered critical point can be reached by tuning the relative magnitude or phases of the ferromagnetic and superconducting order parameters. We compute the voltage dependence of the tunneling current from a metallic tip into the Majorana chain as a direct probe of the random critical state.

We study the conditions for the existence of unpaired Majorana modes at the ends of vortex lines or the side edges of a layered topological superconductor. We show that the problem is mapped to that of a general Majorana chain and extend Kitaev's condition for the existence of its nontrivial phase by providing an additional condition when a supercurrent flows in the chain. Unpaired Majorana bound states may exist in a vortex line that threads the layers if the spin-orbit coupling has certain in-layer components but, interestingly, only if a nonzero supercurrent is maintained along the vortex. …
Chains of magnetic atoms with either strong spin-orbit coupling or spiral magnetic order which are proximity-coupled to superconducting substrates can host topologically non-trivial Majorana bound states. The experimental signature of these states consists of spectral weight at the Fermi energy and spatially localized near the ends of the chain. However, topologically trivial Yu-Shiba-Rusinov in-gap states localized near the ends of the chain can lead to similar spectra. Here, we explore a protocol to disentangle these contributions by artificially augmenting a candidate Majorana spin chain wi…
A recent experiment [Nadj-Perge et al., Science 346, 602 (2014)] gives possible evidence for Majorana bound states in chains of magnetic adatoms placed on a superconductor. While many features of the observed end states are naturally interpreted in terms of Majoranas, their strong localization remained puzzling. We consider a linear chain of Anderson impurities on a superconductor as a minimal model and treat it largely analytically within mean-field theory. We explore the phase diagram, the subgap excitation spectrum, and the Majorana wavefunctions. Owing to a strong velocity renormalization,…
The Majorana edge states of the Kitaev chain model have attracted extensive attention on their stability and experimental realization. One of the interesting aspects is finding the exotic proximity effect, which guarantees the presence of the Majorana modes, further enables efficient braidings between them. In this paper, we explore the superconducting proximity effect for quasi-periodic quantum wires and discuss how quasi-periodic patterns affect the stability of the Majorana modes. Considering the Kitaev chain model of the one-dimensional quasi-periodic system, we discuss the pattern-depende…
We consider a closed chain of even number of Majorana zero modes with nearest-neighbour couplings which are different site by site generically, thus no any crystal symmetry. Instead, we demonstrate the possibility of an emergent supersymmetry (SUSY), which is accompanied by gapless Fermionic excitations. In particular, the condition can be easily satisfied by tuning only one coupling, regardless of how many other couplings are there. Such a system can be realized by four Majorana modes on two parallel Majorana nanowires with their ends connected by Josephson junctions and bodies connected by a…
We study a one-dimensional (1D) chain of $2N$ Majorana bound states, which interact through a local quartic interaction. This model describes for example the edge physics of a quasi 1D stack of $2N$ Kitaev chains with modified time-reversal symmetry $Tγ_iT^{-1}=γ_i$, which precludes the presence of quadratic coupling. The ground state of our 1D Majorana chain displays a four-fold periodicity in $N$, corresponding to the four distinct topological classes of the stacked Kitaev chains. We analyze the transport properties of the 1D Majorana chain, when probed by local conductors located at its end…
Topological superconductors are prime candidates for the implementation of topological-quantum-computation ideas because they can support non-Abelian excitations like Majorana fermions. We go beyond the low-energy effective-model descriptions of Majorana bound states (MBSs), to derive non-equilibrium transport properties of wire geometries of these systems in the presence of arbitrarily large applied voltages. Our approach involves quantum Langevin equations and non-equilibrium Green's functions. By virtue of a full microscopic calculation we are able to model the tunnel coupling between the s…
Motivated by the striking promise of quantum computation, Majorana bound states (MBSs) in solid-state systems have attracted wide attention in recent years. In particular, the wavefunction localization of MBSs is a key feature and crucial for their future implementation as qubits. Here, we investigate the spatial and electronic characteristics of topological superconducting chains of iron atoms on the surface of Pb(110) by combining scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). We demonstrate that the Fe chains are mono-atomic, structured in a linear fashion, and exhib…
In this paper, we numerically study the non-Abelian statistics of the zero-energy Majorana fermions on the end of Majorana chain and show its application to quantum computing by mapping it to a spin model with special symmetry. In particular, by using transverse-field Ising model with Z2 symmetry, we verify the nontrivial non-Abelian statistics of Majorana fermions. Numerical evidence and comparison in both Majorana-representation and spin-representation are presented. The degenerate ground states of a symmetry protected spin chain therefore previde a promising platform for topological quantum…
We consider the temporal evolution of a zero energy edge Majorana of a spinless $p$-wave superconducting chain following a sudden change of a parameter of the Hamiltonian. Starting from one of the topological phases that has an edge Majorana, the system is suddenly driven to the other topological phase or to the (topologically) trivial phases and also to the quantum critical points (QCPs) separating these phases. The survival probability of the initial edge Majorana as a function of time is studied following the quench. Interestingly when the chain is quenched to the QCP, we find a nearly perf…
We demonstrate that it is possible to use atomic manipulation techniques to adiabatically tune between one-dimensional and two-dimensional topological superconductors in magnet--superconductor hybrid (MSH) structures. This allows one to change the nature of the associated Majorana fermions between localized bound states and chiral Majorana edge modes, and provides a new approach for counting the topological invariant of the system -- the Chern number -- in real space. Moreover, we show that the topological nature of finite-size MSH structures can be characterized using the Chern number density…
Majorana zero modes in a superconductor-semiconductor nanowire have been extensively studied during the past decade. Disorder remains a serious problem, preventing the definitive observation of topological Majorana bound states. Thus, it is worthwhile to revisit the simple model, the Kitaev chain, and study the effects of weak and strong disorder on the Kitaev chain. By comparing the role of disorder in a Kitaev chain with that in a nanowire, we find that disorder affects both systems but in a nonuniversal manner. In general, disorder has a much stronger effect on the nanowire than the Kitaev …
We calculate the shot noise power in a junction of a network of Majorana bound states (MBS) with a normal metal. These Majorana bound states are on the border of alternative ferromagnetic and superconducting regions at the quantum spin Hall insulator edge. We analyze different realization of MBS networks including a few isolated ones or in a chain allowing for the limit of weak and strong tunneling. The conductance, as well as the shot noise are considerably stronger than those of a weakly coupled normal-superconduting junction, being a hallmark of the MBS. We find that the Fano factor is quan…
Linear, suspended chains of magnetic atoms proximity coupled to an s-wave superconductor are predicted to host Majorana zero modes at the chain ends in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling. Specifically, iron (Fe) chains on Pb(110) have been explored as a possible system to exhibit topological superconductivity and host Majorana zero-modes [Nadj-Perge, et al., Science 346, 602 (2014)]. Here, we study chains of the transition metal cobalt (Co) on Pb(110) and check for topological signatures. Using spin-polarized scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we resolve ferromagnetic order in the $d$ ba…
In this work we study interacting spinless fermions on a two-chain ladder with inter-chain pair tunneling while single-particle tunneling is suppressed at low energy. The model embodies a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry associated with the fermion parity on each chain. We find that when the system is driven to the strong-coupling phase by the pair tunneling, Majorana excitations appear on the boundary. Such Majorana edge states correspond to two-fold degeneracy of ground states distinguished by different fermion parity on each chain, thus representing a generalization of one-dimensional topological su…
We study Majorana bound states in a disordered chain of semiconductor quantum dots proximity-coupled to an s-wave superconductor. By calculating its topological quantum number, based on the scattering-matrix method and a tight-binding model, we can identify the topological property of such an inhomogeneous one-dimensional system. We study the robustness of Majorana bound states against disorder in both the spin-independent terms (including the chemical potential and the regular spin-conserving hopping) and the spin-dependent term, i.e., the spin-flip hopping due to the Rashba spin-orbit coupli…
We investigate the robustness of Majorana edge modes under disorder and interactions. We exploit a recently found mapping of the interacting Kitaev chain in the symmetric region ($μ= 0$, $t = Δ$) to free fermions. Extending the exact solution to the disordered case allows us to calculate analytically the topological phase boundary for all interaction and disorder strengths, which has been thought to be only accessible numerically. We discover a regime in which moderate disorder in the interaction matrix elements enhances topological order well into the strongly interacting regime $U > t$. We a…
We suggest a way to overcome the obstacles that disorder and high density of states pose to the creation of unpaired Majorana fermions in one-dimensional systems. This is achieved by splitting the system into a chain of quantum dots, which are then tuned to the conditions under which the chain can be viewed as an effective Kitaev model, so that it is in a robust topological phase with well-localized Majorana states in the outermost dots. The tuning algorithm that we develop involves controlling the gate voltages and the superconducting phases. Resonant Andreev spectroscopy allows us to make th…
We propose molecular magnets as a platform to emulate Majorana zero modes (MZMs). Using a quantum chemistry approach, we identify several candidates and predict a Co trimer to have sufficient properties to host MZMs. Parameters of the quantum spin Hamiltonian describing the three coupled magnetic centers are extracted from ab initio calculations. The low-energy subspace of this material realizes an effective anisotropic spin-1/2 chain. We show the presence of MZMs in this system and find that their response to electronic paramagnetic resonance provides an experimentally realizable signature.
