Majorana zero modes in a superconductor-semiconductor nanowire have been extensively studied during the past decade. Disorder remains a serious problem, preventing the definitive observation of topological Majorana bound states. Thus, it is worthwhile to revisit the simple model, the Kitaev chain, and study the effects of weak and strong disorder on the Kitaev chain. By comparing the role of disorder in a Kitaev chain with that in a nanowire, we find that disorder affects both systems but in a nonuniversal manner. In general, disorder has a much stronger effect on the nanowire than the Kitaev chain, particularly for weak to intermediate disorder. For strong disorder, both the Kitaev chain and nanowire manifest random featureless behavior due to universal Anderson localization. Only the vanishing and strong disorder regimes are thus universal, manifesting respectively topological superconductivity and Anderson localization, but the experimentally relevant intermediate disorder regime is nonuniversal with the details dependent on the disorder realization in the system.
We show that networks of topological nanowires can realize the physics of exactly solvable Kitaev spin models with two-body interactions. This connection arises from the description of the low-energy theory of both systems in terms of a tight-binding model of Majorana modes. In Kitaev spin models the Majorana description provides a convenient representation to solve the model, whereas in an array of topological nanowires it arises, because the physical Majorana modes localized at wire ends permit tunnelling between wire ends and across different Josephson junctions. We explicitly show that an …
Signatures of Majorana fermion bound states in one-dimensional topological insulator (TI) nanowires with proximity effect induced superconductivity are studied. The phase diagram and energy spectra are calculated for single TI nanowires and it is shown that the nanowires can be in the topological invariant phases of winding numbers $W=0, \pm 1$, and $\pm 2$ corresponding to the cases with zero, one and two pairs of Majorana fermions in the single TI nanowires. It is also shown that the topological winding numbers, i.e., the numbers of pairs of Majorana fermions in the TI nanowires can be extra…
Electron transport through Majorana nanowire with strongly asymmetric couplings to normal metal leads is considered. In three terminal geometry (electrically grounded nanowire) it is shown that the presence of unbiased electrode restores zero-bias anomaly even for strong Majorana energy splitting. For effectively two-terminal geometry we show that electrical current through asymmetric Majorana junction is qualitatively different from the analogous current through a resonant (Breit-Wigner) level.
The zero-bias peak (ZBP) is understood as the definite signature of a Majorana bound state (MBS) when attached to a semi-infinite Kitaev nanowire (KNW) nearby zero temperature. However, such characteristics concerning the realization of the KNW constitute a profound experimental challenge. We explore theoretically a QD connected to a topological KNW of finite size at non-zero temperatures and show that overlapped MBSs of the wire edges can become effectively decoupled from each other and the characteristic ZBP can be fully recovered if one tunes the system into the leaked Majorana fermion fixe…
Motivated by the fact that the idealized Kitaev chain toy model and the experimental semiconductor-superconductor Majorana nanowire can both host the Majorana zero modes, we theoretically investigate the question to what extent the two models are equivalent or similar, using the perspective of the corresponding dual spin models for both. We start with the duality between the Kitaev chain and the transverse-field XY spin model through the Jordan-Wigner transformation with the goal of establishing the connection between the Kitaev chain and the nanowire. By applying the Jordan-Wigner transformat…
This paper presents a coupled channel model for transport in 2D semiconductor Majorana nanowires coupled to normal leads. When the nanowire hosts a zero mode, conspicuous signatures on the linear conductance are predicted. An effective model in second quantization allowing a fully analytical solution is used to clarify the physics. We also discuss the nonlinear current response ($dI/dV$)
We show that confined Majorana fermions can exist in nanowires with proximity induced s-wave superconducting pairing if the direction of an external magnetic field rotates along the wire. The system is equivalent to nanowires with Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling, with strength proportional to the derivative of the field angle. For realistic parameters, we demonstrate that a set of permanent magnets can bring a nearby nanowire into the topologically non-trivial phase with localized Majorana modes at its ends. Without the requirement of spin-orbit coupling this opens up for a new route for demon…
The effects of geometry on the hosting of Majorana zero modes are explored in core-shell nanowires with a hexagonal core and a triangular shell, and vice versa. The energy interval separating electronic states localized in the corners from states localized on the sides of the shell is shown to be larger for a triangular nanowire with a hexagonal core, than a triangular one. We build the topological phase diagram for both cases and compare them to earlier work on prismatic nanowires with the same core and shell geometry. We suggest that a dual core nanowire is needed to allow for a braiding ope…
We calculate the cross section for optical absorption of planar 2D Majorana nanowires. Light is described in the dipole approximation. We discuss the signatures on the cross section of a near-zero-energy mode. A low energy peak for transverse polarization, absent in longitudinal one, reveals the presence of the Majorana-like state. This peak is relatively robust against thermal smearing of the level occupations. We consider the influence of optical masks hiding parts of the nanowire from the light.
We discuss the robustness of Majorana edge modes in a finite quantum nanowire of cylindrical shape. The nanowire is modeled as a bidimensional cylindrical shell of semiconductor material with proximity-induced superconductivity and an intrinsic Rashba spin-orbit interaction. The latter is characterized by effective electric and magnetic fields in transverse direction of the nanowire. An applied external magnetic field pointing in an arbitrary orientation is also assumed. The numerical diagonalization of the Hamiltonian allows us to study the spectrum of the nanowire for different experimental …
We calculate the local quasi-particle current of a Majorana state in a planar hybrid (superconductor-semiconductor) nanowire. In absence of perpendicular components of the magnetic field the current flows in circular trajectories without a preferred orientation. On the other hand, when a perpendicular component of the magnetic field is present the quasi-particle current circulates surrounding the Majorana density peak with an orientation established by the magnetic field.
A numerical method to obtain the spectrum of smooth normal-superconductor junctions in nanowires, able to host Majorana zero modes, is presented. Softness in the potential and superconductor interfaces yields opposite effects on the protection of Majorana modes. While a soft potential is a hindrance for protection, a soft superconductor gap transition greatly favors it. Our method also points out the possibility of extended Majorana states when propagating modes are active far from the junction, although this requires equal incident fluxes in all open channels.
We investigate the effects that a tilting of the magnetic field from the parallel direction has on the states of a 1D Majorana nanowire. Particularly, we focus on the conditions for the existence of Majorana zero modes, uncovering an analytical relation (the sine rule) between the field orientation relative to the wire, its magnitude and the superconducting parameter of the material. The study is then extended to junctions of nanowires, treated as magnetically inhomogeneous straight nanowires composed of two homogeneous arms. It is shown that their spectrum can be explained in terms of the spe…
Majorana Josephson junctions in nanowire systems exhibit a pseudo-$4π$ period current-phase relation in the clean limit. In this work, we study how this current-phase relation responds to a tilted magnetic field in a disordered Majorana Josephson junction within the Bogoliubov-de Gennes approach. We show that the tilted magnetic field induces a $ϕ_0$ phase shift to the current-phase relation. Most importantly, we find that this $ϕ_0$-junction behavior is robust even in the presence of disorders.
Majorana zero modes are localized quasiparticles that obey non-Abelian exchange statistics. Braiding Majorana zero modes forms the basis of topologically protected quantum operations which could in principle significantly reduce qubit decoherence and gate control errors in the device level. Therefore, searching for Majorana zero modes in various solid state systems is a major topic in condensed matter physics and quantum computer science. Since the first experimental signature observed in hybrid superconductor-semiconductor nanowire devices, this field has witnessed a dramatic expansion in mat…
Majorana zero modes at the boundaries of topological superconductors are charge-neutral, an equal superposition of electrons and holes. This ideal situation is, however, hard to achieve in physical implementations, such as proximitised semiconducting nanowires of realistic length. In such systems Majorana overlaps are unavoidable and lead to their hybridisation into charged Bogoliubov quasiparticles of finite energy which, unlike true zero modes, are affected by electronic interactions. We here demonstrate that these interactions, particularly with bound charges in the dielectric surroundings,…
Tunneling experiment is a key technique for detecting Majorana fermion in solid state systems. We use Keldysh non-equilibrium Green function method to study multi-lead tunneling in superconducting nanowire with Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings. A zero-bias \textit{dc} conductance peak appears in our setup which signifies the existence of Majorana fermion and is in accordance with previous experimental results on InSb nanowire. Interestingly, due to the exotic property of Majorana fermion, there exists a hole transmission channel which makes the currents asymmetric at the left and ri…
Majorana modes emerge in non-trivial topological phases at the edges of some specific materials, like proximitized semiconducting nanowires under a external magnetic field. Ideally, they are non-local states that are charge neutral superpositions of electrons and holes. However, in nanowires of realistic length their wave functions overlap and acquire a finite charge that, under certain circumstances, makes them susceptible to interactions, specifically with the image charges that arise in the electrostatic environment. Considering a realistic three-dimensional model of the dielectric surround…
We consider Ge/Si core/shell nanowires with hole states coupled to an $s$-wave superconductor in the presence of electric and magnetic fields. We employ a microscopic model that takes into account material-specific details of the band structure such as strong and electrically tunable Rashba-type spin-orbit interaction and $g$ factor anisotropy for the holes. In addition, the proximity-induced superconductivity Hamiltonian is derived starting from a microscopic model. In the topological phase, the nanowires host Majorana fermions with localization lengths that depend strongly on both the magnet…
In this paper, we investigate the transport properties of spinful electrons tunnel-coupled to a finite-length Majorana nanowire on one end which is further tunnel-coupled to a quantum dot (QD) at the other end. Using a full counting statistics approach, we show that Andreev reflection can happen in two separate channels that can be associated with the two spin states of the tunneling electrons. In a low-energy model for the nanowire that is represented by two overlapping Majorana bound states (MBSs) localized at the ends of the wire, analytical formulas for conductance and noise reveal their c…
We investigate theoretically a Fano interferometer composed by STM and AFM tips close to a Kitaev dimer of superconducting adatoms, in which the adatom placed under the AFM tip, encloses a pair of Majorana fermions (MFs). For the binding energy $Δ$ of the Cooper pair delocalized into the adatoms under the tips coincident with the tunneling amplitude $t$ between them, namely $Δ$ = $t$, we find that only one MF beneath the AFM tip hybridizes with the adatom coupled to the STM tips. As a result, a gate invariance feature emerges: the Fano profile of the transmittance rises as an invariant quantit…
We demonstrate a novel means of creating Majorana zero modes using magnetic flux applied to a full superconducting shell surrounding a semiconducting nanowire core, unifying approaches based on proximitized nanowires and vortices in topological superconductors. In the destructive Little-Parks regime, reentrant regions of superconductivity are associated with integer number of phase windings in the shell. Tunneling into the core reveals a hard induced gap near zero applied flux, corresponding to zero phase winding, and a gapped region with a discrete zero-energy state for flux around Φ_0 = h/2e…
We show that Majorana edge modes appear in a strongly correlated phase of semiconducting nanowires with discrete rotational symmetry in the cross section. These modes exist in the absence of spin-orbit coupling, magnetic fields and superconductivity. They appear purely due to the combination of the three-dimensional Coulomb interaction and orbital physics, which generates a fermionic condensate exhibiting a topological ground state degeneracy in a sector of the spectrum which is gapped to continuum modes. The gap can be comparable in magnitude to the topological superconducting gap in other so…
We theoretically study a spin-orbit-coupled nanowire proximitized by a superconductor in the presence of an externally applied Zeeman field ("Majorana nanowire") with zero-energy Majorana bound states localized at the two ends of the wire when the Zeeman spin splitting is large enough for the system to enter the topological phase. The specific physics of interest in the current work is the effect of having several tunnel probes attached to the wire along its length. Such tunnel probes should allow, as a matter of principle, one to observe both the predicted bulk superconducting gap closing and…
We study a periodically driven nanowire with Rashba-like conduction and valence bands in the presence of a magnetic field. We identify topological regimes in which the system hosts zero-energy Majorana fermions. We further investigate the effect of strong electron-electron interactions that give rise to parafermion zero energy modes hosted at the nanowire ends. The first setup we consider allows for topological phases by applying only static magnetic fields without the need of superconductivity. The second setup involves both superconductivity and time-dependent magnetic fields and allows one …
A hard proximity-induced superconducting gap has recently been observed in semiconductor nanowire systems at low magnetic fields. However, in the topological regime at high magnetic fields, a soft gap emerges and represents a fundamental obstacle to topologically protected quantum information processing with Majorana bound states. Here we show that in a setup of double Rashba nanowires that are coupled to an s-wave superconductor and subjected to an external magnetic field along the wires, the topological threshold can be significantly reduced by the destructive interference of direct and cros…
We carry out a realistic simulation of Majorana nanowires in order to understand the latest high- quality experimental data [H. Zhang et al., arXiv:1603.04069 (2016)] and, in the process, develop a comprehensive picture for what physical mechanisms may be operational in realistic nanowires leading to discrepancies between minimal theory and experimental observations (e.g., weakness and broadening of the zero-bias peak and breaking of particle-hole symmetry). Our focus is on understanding specific intriguing features in the data, and our goal is to establish matters of principle controlling the…
One of the most promising platforms for one-dimensional topological superconductivity is based on semiconducting nanowires with strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC), where s-wave superconductivity is induced by proximity effect and an external Zeeman field drives the system into the topological superconducting phase with Majorana bound states (MBSs) at the end of the wire. During last years this idea has led to a great number of important experiments in hybrid superconductor-semiconductor systems, where the main signature is an emergent zero-bias peak (ZBP) in the differential conductance as the Z…
It has been predicted that superconducting junctions made with topological nanowires hosting Majorana bound states (MBS) exhibit an anomalous 4π-periodic Josephson effect. Finding an experimental setup with these unconventional properties poses, however, a serious challenge: for finite-length wires, the equilibrium supercurrents are always 2π-periodic as anticrossings of states with the same fermionic parity are possible. We show, however, that the anomaly survives in the transient regime of the ac Josephson effect. Transients are moreover protected against decay by quasiparticle poisoning as …
We analyze the current-biased Shapiro experiment in a Josephson junction formed by two one-dimensional nanowires featuring Majorana fermions. Ideally, these junctions are predicted to have an unconventional $4π$-periodic Josephson effect and thus only Shapiro steps at even multiples of the driving frequency. Taking additionally into account overlap between the Majorana fermions, due to the finite length of the wire, renders the Josephson junction conventional for any dc-experiments. We show that probing the current-phase relation in a current biased setup dynamically decouples the Majorana fer…
Full-shell nanowires (semiconducting nanowires fully coated with a superconducting shell) have been recently presented as a novel means to create Majorana zero modes. In contrast to partially coated nanowires, it has been argued that full-shell nanowires do not require high magnetic fields and low densities to reach a putative topological regime. Here we present a theoretical study of these devices taking into account all the basic ingredients, including a charge distribution spread across the section of the nanowire, required to qualitatively explain the first experimental results (Vaitiekena…
We show that the boundary charge and spin can be used as alternative signatures of the topological phase transition in topological models such as semiconducting nanowires with strong Rashba spin-orbit interaction in the presence of a magnetic field and in proximity to an $s$-wave superconductor. We identify signatures of the topological phase transition that do not rely on the presence of Majorana zero-energy modes and, thus, can serve as independent probes of topological properties. The boundary spin component along the magnetic field, obtained by summing contributions from all states below t…
Majorana fermions are the only fermionic particles that are expected to be their own antiparticles. While elementary particles of the Majorana type were not identified yet, quasi-particles with Majorana like properties, born from interacting electrons in the solid, were predicted to exist. Here, we present thorough experimental studies, backed by numerical simulations, of a system composed of an aluminum superconductor in proximity to an indium arsenide nanowire, with the latter possessing strong spin-orbit coupling. An induced 1d topological superconductor - supporting Majorana fermions at bo…
We investigate the topological properties of a dimerized Kitaev chain with long-range interactions, including the intercell hopping and superconducting pairing terms. It is found that even only when the intercell hopping term appears, the size of the energy gap, the proportion of topological phases, and the topological phase transition can be modulated. The notable result is that they lead to a new Kitaev-like phase featured by the twofold-degenerated Majorana zero-energy edge states. Next in the presence of the intercell superconducting pairing term, this kind of Majorana phase can be magnifi…
We use the available transport measurements in the literature to develop a dataset for the likely amount of disorder in semiconductor (InAs and InSb) materials which are used in fabricating the superconductor-semiconductor nanowire samples in the experimental search for Majorana zero modes. Using the estimated disorder in direct Majorana simulations, we conclude that the current level of disorder in semiconductor Majorana nanowires is at least an order of magnitude higher than that necessary for the emergence of topological Majorana zero modes. In agreement with existing results, we find that …
We consider a simple conceptual question with respect to Majorana zero modes in semiconductor nanowires: Can the measured non-ideal values of the zero-bias-conductance-peak in the tunneling experiments be used as a characteristic to predict the underlying topological nature of the proximity induced nanowire superconductivity? In particular, we define and calculate the topological visibility, which is a variation of the topological invariant associated with the scattering matrix of the system as well as the zero-bias-conductance-peak heights in the tunneling measurements, in the presence of dis…
We study both analytically and numerically the role of orbital effects caused by a magnetic field applied along the axis of a semiconducting Rashba nanowire in the topological regime hosting Majorana fermions. We demonstrate that the orbital effects can be effectively taken into account in a one-dimensional model by shifting the chemical potential, and, thus modifying the topological criterion. We focus on the energy splitting between two Majorana fermions in a finite nanowire and find a striking interplay between orbital and Zeeman effects on this splitting. In the limit of strong spin-orbit …
We study the effect of external electric fields on superconductor-semiconductor coupling by measuring the electron transport in InSb semiconductor nanowires coupled to an epitaxially grown Al superconductor. We find that the gate voltage induced electric fields can greatly modify the coupling strength, which has consequences for the proximity induced superconducting gap, effective g-factor, and spin-orbit coupling, which all play a key role in understanding Majorana physics. We further show that level repulsion due to spin-orbit coupling in a finite size system can lead to seemingly stable zer…
Spin-orbit interaction (SOI) plays a key role in creating Majorana zero modes in semiconductor nanowires proximity coupled to a superconductor. We track the evolution of the induced superconducting gap in InSb nanowires coupled to a NbTiN superconductor in a large range of magnetic field strengths and orientations. Based on realistic simulations of our devices, we reveal SOI with a strength of 0.15-0.35 eV$\require{mediawiki-texvc}Å$. Our approach identifies the direction of the spin-orbit field, which is strongly affected by the superconductor geometry and electrostatic gates.
We study the lifetime of topological qubits based on Majorana bound states hosted in a one-dimensional Rashba nanowire (NW) with proximity-induced superconductivity and non-uniform chemical potential needed for manipulation and read-out. If nearby gates tune the chemical potential locally so that part of the NW is in the trivial phase, Andreev bound states (ABSs) can emerge which are localized at the interface between topological and trivial phases with energies significantly less than the gap. The emergence of such subgap states strongly decreases the Majorana qubit lifetime at finite tempera…
We calculate the electromagnetic absorption cross section of long and narrow nanowires, in the so-called quasi-1D limit. We consider only two transverse bands and compute the dipole absorption cross section taking into account quasiparticle transitions from negative to positive energy eigenstates of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian. The presence of the zero energy (Majorana) state manifests in the different absorption spectra for $x$ (parallel) and $y$ (transverse) polarizations of the electromagnetic field. In the $y$-polarized case, the Majorana state causes a low energy absorption plate…
Floquet Majorana edge modes capture the topological features of periodically driven superconductors. We present a Kitaev chain with multiple time periodic driving and demonstrate how the avoidance of bands crossing is altered, which gives rise to new regions supporting Majorana edge modes. A one dimensional generalized method was proposed to predict Majorana edge modes via the Zak phase of the Floquet bands. We also study the time independent effective Hamiltonian at high frequency limit and introduce diverse index to characterize topological phases with different relative phase between the mu…
The Majorana phase boundaries in planar 2D hybrid (semiconductor-superconductor) nanowires are modified by orbital effects due to off plane magnetic components. We show that Majorana zero modes survive sizable vertical field tiltings, uncovering a remarkable phase diagram. Analytical expressions of the phase boundaries are given for the strong orbital limit. These phase boundaries can be fulfilled with attainable setups, such as an InAs nanowire of $150\, {\rm nm}$ in transverse width.
We theoretically study transport properties of nanowires with the Dresselhaus [110] spin-orbit coupling under the in-plane Zeeman potential and the proximity-induced s-wave pair potential. In the topologically nontrivial phase, the nanowire hosts the Majorana fermions at its edges and the number of the Majorana bound states is equal to the number propagating channels (Nc). When we attach a normal metal to the superconductor, such Majorana bound states penetrate into the dirty normal segment and form the Nc resonant transmission channels there. We show that chiral symmetry of the electronic sta…
Superconductors hosting long-sought excitations called Majorana fermions may be ultimately used as qubits of fault-tolerant topological quantum computers. A crucial challenge toward the topological quantum computer is to implement quantum operation of nearly degenerate quantum states as a dynamical process of Majorana fermions. In this paper, we investigate the braiding dynamics of Majorana fermions on superconducting nanowires. In a finite size system, a non- adiabatic dynamical process dominates the non-Abelian braiding that operates qubits of Majorana fermions. Our simulations clarify how q…
