Poor man's Majoranas (PMMs) hold the promise to engineer Majorana bound states in a highly tunable setup consisting of a chain of quantum dots that are connected via superconductors. Due to recent progress in controlling the amplitudes of elastic cotunneling (ECT) and crossed Andreev reflection (CAR), two vital ingredients for PMMs, experimental investigations of PMMs have gained significant interest. Previously, analytic conditions for the "sweet spots" that result in PMMs have focused on systems with infinite Zeeman energy. Here, we derive analytically a sweet spot condition for PMMs in a system with finite Zeeman energy in the absence of Coulomb interaction. We then consider two numerical models, one in which ECT and CAR are transmitted via superconducting bulk states and one in which they are transmitted via an Andreev bound state. We demonstrate that the analytical sweet spot conditions can only be approximated in these more realistic models, but they cannot be satisfied exactly. As a consequence, we do not find perfect PMMs in these systems, but instead near-zero-energy states that are highly, but not perfectly, localized. These states can be considered as imperfect PMMs and their classification relies on threshold values, which adds some arbitrariness to the concept of PMMs.
Robustness of edge states and non-Abelian excitations of topological states of matter promises quantum memory and quantum processing, which is naturally immune against microscopic imperfections such as static disorder. However, topological properties will not in general protect quantum system from time-dependent disorder or noise. Here we take the example of a network of Kitaev wires with Majorana edge modes storing qubits to investigate the effects of classical noise in the crossover from the quasi-static to the fast fluctuation regime. We present detailed results for the Majorana edge correl…

We study theoretically the two Kitaev chains put in parallel, i.e., Kitaev ladder, coupled by Josephson junction. The $π$-junction between the Majorana bound states at the ends of the chains competes with the usual Josephson coupling along the chain, and this frustration leads to the modulation of the phase difference of the superconducting order parameter between the two chains. We show that this modulation gives the double degeneracy of the ground states, which can be manipulated by external electric and magnetic fields.
Majorana zero modes in a superconductor-semiconductor nanowire have been extensively studied during the past decade. Disorder remains a serious problem, preventing the definitive observation of topological Majorana bound states. Thus, it is worthwhile to revisit the simple model, the Kitaev chain, and study the effects of weak and strong disorder on the Kitaev chain. By comparing the role of disorder in a Kitaev chain with that in a nanowire, we find that disorder affects both systems but in a nonuniversal manner. In general, disorder has a much stronger effect on the nanowire than the Kitaev …
What distinguishes trivial from topological superluids in interacting many-body systems where the number of particles is conserved? Building on a class of integrable pairing Hamiltonians, we present a number-conserving, interacting variation of the Kitaev model, the Richardson-Gaudin-Kitaev chain, that remains exactly solvable for periodic and antiperiodic boundary conditions. Our model allows us to identify fermionic parity switches that distinctively characterize topological superconductivity in interacting many-body systems. Although the Majorana zero-modes in this model have only a power-l…
The classification of loop symmetries in Kitaev's honeycomb lattice model provides a natural framework to study the abelian topological degeneracy. We derive a perturbative low-energy effective Hamiltonian, that is valid to all orders of the expansion and for all possible toroidal configurations. Using this form we demonstrate at what order the system's topological degeneracy is lifted by finite size effects and note that in the thermodynamic limit it is robust to all orders. Further, we demonstrate that the loop symmetries themselves correspond to the creation, propagation and annihilation of…

We investigate the robustness of Majorana edge modes under disorder and interactions. We exploit a recently found mapping of the interacting Kitaev chain in the symmetric region ($μ= 0$, $t = Δ$) to free fermions. Extending the exact solution to the disordered case allows us to calculate analytically the topological phase boundary for all interaction and disorder strengths, which has been thought to be only accessible numerically. We discover a regime in which moderate disorder in the interaction matrix elements enhances topological order well into the strongly interacting regime $U > t$. We a…
In quantum metrology, nonlinear many-body interactions can enhance the precision of Hamiltonian parameter estimation to surpass the Heisenberg scaling. Here, we consider the estimation of the interaction strength in linear systems with long-range interactions and using the Kitaev chains as a case study, we establish a transition from the Heisenberg to super-Heisenberg scaling in the quantum Fisher information by varying the interaction range. We further show that quantum control can improve the prefactor of the quantum Fisher information. Our results explore the advantage of optimal quantum co…

We investigate the resilience of symmetry-protected topological edge states at the boundaries of Kitaev chains in the presence of a bath which explicitly introduces symmetry-breaking terms. Specifically, we focus on single-particle losses and gains, violating the protecting parity symmetry, which could generically occur in realistic scenarios. For homogeneous systems, we show that the Majorana mode decays exponentially fast. By the inclusion of strong disorder, where the closed system enters a many-body localized phase, we find that the Majorana mode can be stabilized substantially. The decay …
It was recently shown that an interacting Kitaev topological superconductor model is exactly solvable based on two-step Jordan-Wigner transformations together with one spin rotation. We generalize this model by including the dimerization, which is shown also to be exactly solvable. We analytically determine the topological phase diagram containing seven distinct phases. It is argued that the system is topological when a fermionic many-body Majorana zero-energy edge state emerges. It is intriguing that there are two tetra-critical points, at each of which four distinct phases touch.
Majorana-zero-modes (MZMs) were predicted to exist as edge states of a physical system called the Kitaev chain. MZMs should host particles that are their own antiparticles and could be used as a basis for a qubit which is robust-to-noise. However, all attempts to prove their existence gave inconclusive results. Here, the Kitaev chain is exactly solved with a quantum computing methodology and properties of MZMs are probed by generating eigenstates of the Kitev Hamiltonian on 3 noisy qubits of a publicly available quantum computer. After an ontological elaboration I show that two eigenstates of …
Periodically driven Kitaev chains show a rich phase diagram as the amplitude and frequency of the drive is varied, with topological phase transitions separating regions with different number of Majorana zero and π modes. We explore whether the critical point separating different phases of the periodically driven chain may be characterized by a universal central charge. We affirmatively answer this question by studying the entanglement entropy (EE) numerically and analytically for the lowest entangled many particle eigenstate at arbitrary nonstroboscopic and stroboscopic times. We find that the…
In recent years, tools from quantum information theory have become indispensable in characterizing many-body systems. In this work, we employ measures of entanglement to study the interplay between disorder and the topological phase in 1D systems of the Kitaev type, which can host Majorana end modes at their edges. We find that the entanglement entropy may actually increase as a result of disorder, and identify the origin of this behavior in the appearance of an infinite-disorder critical point. We also employ the entanglement spectrum to accurately determine the phase diagram of the system, a…
Periodically driven quantum many-body systems support anomalous topological phases of matter, which cannot be realized by static systems. In many cases, these anomalous phases can be many-body localized, which implies that they are stable and do not heat up as a result of the driving. What types of anomalous topological phenomena can be stabilized in driven systems, and in particular, can an anomalous phase exhibiting non-Abelian anyons be stabilized? We address this question using an exactly solvable, stroboscopically driven 2D Kitaev spin model, in which anisotropic exchange couplings are bo…
