We obtain and analyze equations determining first-order differential symmetry operators with matrix coefficients for the Dirac equation with an external electromagnetic potential in a $(2+1)$-dimensional Riemann (curved) spacetime. Nonequivalent complete sets of mutually commuting symmetry operators are classified in a $(2+1)$-dimensional Minkowski (flat) space. For each of the sets we carry out a complete separation of variables in the Dirac equation and find a corresponding electromagnetic potential permitting separation of variables.
The article describes a relation between the fundamental solutions of Dirac's equations for free electron and electron in given electromagnetic field viewed as functionals on bump functions. We explain how classical relativistic mechanics of a charged particle in given electromagnetic field arises from quantum mechanics of Dirac's electron in that field.
We consider two-dimensional massless Dirac operators in a radially symmetric electromagnetic field. In this case the fields may be described by one-dimensional electric and magnetic potentials $V$ and $A$. We show dynamical localization in the regime when $\displaystyle\lim_{r\to\infty}|V|/|A |<1$, where dense point spectrum occurs.
Using the Pauli-Villars regularization and arguments from convex analysis, we construct solutions to the classical time-independent Maxwell equations in Dirac's vacuum, in the presence of small external electromagnetic sources. The vacuum is not an empty space, but rather a quantum fluctuating medium which behaves as a nonlinear polarizable material. Its behavior is described by a Dirac equation involving infinitely many particles. The quantum corrections to the usual Maxwell equations are nonlinear and nonlocal. Even if photons are described by a purely classical electromagnetic field, the re…
Integration of the Dirac equation with an external electromagnetic field is explored in the framework of the method of separation of variables and of the method of noncommutative integration. We have found a new type of solutions that are not obtained by separation of variables for several external electromagnetic fields. We have considered an example of crossed electric and magnetic fields of a special type for which the Dirac equation admits a nonlocal symmetry operator
A signature independent formalism is created and utilized to determine the general second-order symmetry operators for Dirac's equation on two-dimensional Lorentzian spin manifolds. The formalism is used to characterize the orthonormal frames and metrics that permit the solution of Dirac's equation by separation of variables in the case where a second-order symmetry operator underlies the separation. Separation of variables in complex variables on two-dimensional Minkowski space is also considered.
In this paper we compute the square root of the generalized squared total angular momentum operator $J$ for a Dirac particle in the Kerr-Newman metric. The separation constant $λ$ arising from the Chandrasekahr separation ansatz turns out to be the eigenvalue of $J$. After proving that $J$ is a symmetry operator, we show the completeness of Chandrasekhar Ansatz for the Dirac equation in oblate spheroidal coordinates and derive an explicit formula for the propagator $e^{-itH}$.
We solve the Klein-Gordon and Dirac equations in an open cosmological universe with a partially horn topology in the presence of a time dependent magnetic field. Since the exact solution cannot be obtained explicitly for arbitrary time-dependence of the field, we discuss the asymptotic behavior of the solutions with the help of the relativistic Hamilton-Jacobi equation.
We describe a new class of exact square integrable solutions of the Pauli and Dirac equation in rotating electromagnetic fields. Solutions obtained by putting equations in the stationary form with help of a coordinate transformation corresponding to the transition into a rotating frame. The transformation is assumed to be Galilean one however a non-Galilean transformation is of particular interest for such solutions. Obtained solutions, especially of Dirac's equation, are valid for arbitrary values of parameters and may be tested experimentally.
We study the relations between massless Dirac fermions in an electromagnetic field and atoms in quantum optics. After getting the solutions of the energy spectrum, we show that it is possible to reproduce the 2D Dirac Hamiltonian, with all its quantum relativistic effects, in a controllable system as a single trapped ion through the Jaynes--Cummings and anti-Jaynes--Cummings models. Also we show that under certain conditions the evolution of the Dirac Hamiltonian provides us with Rashba spin-orbit and linear Dresselhaus couplings. Considering the multimode multiphoton Jaynes-Cummings model int…
In this paper we provide using the Clifford and spin-Clifford formalism and some few results of the extensor calculus a derivation of the conservation laws that follow directly from the Dirac-Hestenes equation (DHE) describing a Dirac-Hestenes spinor field (DHSF) in interaction with an external electromagnetic field without using the Lagrangian formalism. In particular, we show that the energy-momentum and total angular momentum extensors of a DHSF is not conserved in spacetime regions permitting the existence of a null electromagnetic field F but a non null electromagnetic potential A. These …
In this paper we study in detail the connection between the solutions to the Dirac and Weyl equation and the associated electromagnetic 4-potentials. First, it is proven that all solutions to the Weyl equations are degenerate, in the sense that they correspond to an infinite number of electromagnetic 4-potentials. As far as the solutions to the Dirac equation are concerned, it is shown that they can be classified into two classes. The elements of the first class correspond to one and only one 4-potential, and are called non-degenerate Dirac solutions. On the other hand, the elements of the sec…
We study the polarization tensor of a Dirac field in $(3+1)$ dimensions confined to a half space -- a problem motivated by applications to the condensed matter physics, and to Topological Insulators in particular. Although the Pauli-Villars regularization scheme has a number of advantages, like explicit gauge invariance and decoupling of heavy modes, it is not applicable on manifolds with boundaries. Here, we modify this scheme by giving an axial mass to the regulators and to the physical field. We compute the renormalized polarization tensor in coordinate representation. We discuss then the i…
The second order symmetry operators that commute with the Dirac operator with external vector, scalar and pseudo-scalar potentials are computed on a general two-dimensional spin-manifold. It is shown that the operator is defined in terms of Killing vectors, valence two Killing tensors and scalar fields defined on the background manifold. The commuting operator that arises from a non-trivial Killing tensor is determined with respect to the associated system of Liouville coordinates and compared to the the second order operator that arises from that obtained from the unique separation scheme ass…
We perform a reduction from three to two spatial dimensions of the physics of a spin-1/2 fermion coupled to the electromagnetic field, by applying Hadamard's method of descent. We consider first the free case, in which motion is determined by the Dirac equation, and then the coupling with a dynamical electromagnetic field, governed by the Dirac-Maxwell equations. We find that invariance along one spatial direction splits the free Dirac equation in two decoupled theories. On the other hand, a dimensional reduction in the presence of an electromagnetic field provides a more complicated theory in…
A concise discussion of the 3-dimensional irreducible (1,0) and (0,1) representations of the restricted Lorentz group and their application to the description of the electromagnetic field is given. It is shown that a mass term is in conflict with relativistic invariance of a formalism using electric and magnetic fields only, contrasting the case of the two-component Majorana field equations. An important difference between the Dirac equation and the Dirac form of Maxwell's equations is highlighted by considering the coupling of the electromagnetic field to the electric current.
We give a non-perturbative construction of a distinguished state for the quantized Dirac field in Minkowski space in the presence of a time-dependent external field of the form of a plane electromagnetic wave. By explicit computation of the fermionic signature operator, it is shown that the Dirac operator has the strong mass oscillation property. We prove that the resulting fermionic projector state is a Hadamard state.
The Dirac Hamiltonian $H^{\left(D\right)}$ for relativistic charged fermions minimally coupled to (possibly time-dependent) electromagnetic fields is transformed with a purpose-built flow equation method, so that the result of that transformation is unitary equivalent to $H^{\left(D\right)}$ and granted to strive towards a limiting value $H^{\left(NW\right)}$ commuting with the Dirac $β$-matrix. Upon expansion of $H^{\left(NW\right)}$ to order $\frac{v^2}{c^2}$ the nonrelativistic Hamiltonian $H^{\left(SP\right)}$ of Schrödinger-Pauli quantum mechanics emerges as the leading order term adding …
A new approach is proposed for an electromagnetic field geometrisation. We show that interacting Maxwell and Dirac fields can be considered as a single connected space-time 4-manifold. The Dirac spinors appear wihtin such approach as basic fanctions for the manifold fundamental group representation and electric and magnertic fields appear as components of a curvature tensor of the manifold covering space.
New symmetry properties are found for pointlike scalar and Dirac particles (Higgs boson and all leptons) in Riemannian and Riemann-Cartan spacetimes in the presence of electromagnetic interactions. A Hermitian form of the Klein-Gordon equation for a pointlike scalar particle in an arbitrary n-dimensional Riemannian (or Riemann-Cartan) spacetime is obtained. New conformal symmetries of initial and Hermitian forms of this equation are ascertained. In the above spacetime, general Hamiltonians in the generalized Feshbach-Villars and Foldy-Wouthuysen representations are derived. The conformal-like …
The semiclassical kinetic theory of Dirac particles in the presence of external electromagnetic fields and global rotation is established. To provide the Hamiltonian formulation of Dirac particles a symplectic two-form which is a matrix in spin indices is proposed. The particle number and current densities for the Dirac particles are acquired in the helicity basis. Following a similar procedure, semiclassical kinetic theory of the Weyl particles is accomplished. It is shown that the phase-space dynamics of the Weyl and Dirac particles is directly linked. The anomalous chiral effects due to the…
A self consistent solution to Dirac equation in a Kerr Newman space-time with $M^2 > a^2 + Q^2$ is presented for the case when the Dirac particle is the source of the curvature and the electromagnetic field. The solution is localised, continuous everywhere and valid only for a special choice of the parameters appearing in the Dirac equation.
It is shown that a spin-1/2 fermion coupled to the axially symmetric electromagnetic vector potential has the same matrix structure as that one for the planar Dirac oscillator. In particular, the planar Dirac oscillator can be interpreted as a charged particle minimally coupled to a transverse homogeneous magnetic field.
We present a systematic approach for the separation of variables for the two-dimensional Dirac equation in polar coordinates. The three vector potential, which couple to the Dirac spinor via minimal coupling, along with the scalar potential are chosen to have angular dependence which emanate the Dirac equation to complete separation of variables. Exact solutions are obtained for a class of solvable potentials along with their relativistic spinor wavefunctions. Particular attention is paid to the situation where the potentials are confined to a quantum dot region and are of scalar, vector and p…
The Dirac equation with a scalar and an electromagnetic potentials is considered. In the time-harmonic case and when all the involved functions depend only on two spatial variables it reduces to a pair of decoupled bicomplex Vekua-type equations [8]. Using the technique developed for complex Vekua equations a system of exact solutions for the bicomplex equation is conctructed under additional conditions, in particular when the electromagnetic potential is absent and the scalar potential is a function of one Cartesian variable. Introducing a transmutation operator relating the involved bicomple…
