We study the Cuntz semigroup for non-simple $\text{C}^*$-algebras in this paper. In particular, we use the extended Elliott invariant to characterize the Cuntz comparison for $\text{C}^*$-algebras with the projection property which have only one ideal.
We show that any faithful quasi-free actions of a finite group on the Cuntz algebra $\mathcal{O}_\infty$ are mutually conjugate, and that they are asymptotically representable.
The article discusses the interrelation between relative Cuntz-Pimsner algebras and partial isometric crossed products, and presents a procedure that reduces any given Hilbert bimodule to the "smallest" Hilbert bimodule yielding the same relative Cuntz-Pimsner algebra as the initial one. In the context of crossed products this reduction procedure corresponds to reduction of C*-dynamical systems.
We introduce a bivariant version of the Cuntz semigroup as equivalence classes of order zero maps generalizing the ordinary Cuntz semigroup. The theory has many properties formally analogous to KK-theory including a composition product. We establish basic properties, like additivity, stability and continuity, and study categorical aspects in the setting of local C*-algebras. We determine the bivariant Cuntz semigroup for numerous examples such as when the second algebra is a Kirchberg algebra, and Cuntz homology for compact Hausdorff spaces which provides a complete invariant. Moreover, we est…
Noncommutative topological entropy estimates are obtained for polynomial gauge invariant endomorphisms of Cuntz algebras, generalising known results for the canonical shift endomorphisms. Exact values for the entropy are computed for a class of permutative endomorphisms related to branching function systems introduced and studied by Bratteli, Jorgensen and Kawamura.
We study the $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal{T}/\mathcal{K}$ where $\mathcal{T}$ is the $C^*$-algebra generated by $d$ weighted shifts on the Fock space of $\mathbb{C}^d$, $\mathcal{F}(\mathbb{C}^d)$, ( where the weights are given by a sequence $\{Z_k\}$ of matrices $Z_k\in M_{d^k}(\mathbb{C})$) and $\mathcal{K}$ is the algebra of compact operators on the Fock space. If $Z_k=I$ for every $k$, $\mathcal{T}/\mathcal{K}$ is the Cuntz algebra $\mathcal{O}_d$. We show that $\mathcal{T}/\mathcal{K}$ is isomorphic to a Cuntz-Pimsner algebra and use it to find conditions for the algebra to be simple. We prese…
To every $C^*$ correspondence over a $C^*$-algebra one can associate a Cuntz-Pimsner algebra generalizing crossed product constructions, graph $C^*$-algebras, and a host of other classes of operator algebras. Cuntz-Pimsner algebras come equipped with a `gauge action' by the circle group and its finite subgroups. For unital Cuntz-Pimsner algebras, we derive necessary and sufficient conditions for the gauge actions (by either the circle or its closed subgroups) to be free.
To a representation of $Ø_N$ (the Cuntz algebra with $N$ generators) we associate a projection valued measure and we study the case when this measure has atoms. The main technical tool are the spaces invariant for all the operators $S_i^*$. We classify the purely atomic representations and find when such representations are permutative. Applications include: wavelet representations, representations generated by finitely correlated states, representation associated to Hadamard triples (or fractal spectral measures) and representations associated to generalized Walsh bases.
We continue our investigation, from \cite{dh}, of the ring-theoretic infiniteness properties of ultrapowers of Banach algebras, studying in this paper the notion of being purely infinite. It is well known that a $C^*$-algebra is purely infinite if and only if any of its ultrapowers are. We find examples of Banach algebras, as algebras of operators on Banach spaces, which do have purely infinite ultrapowers. Our main contribution is the construction of a "Cuntz-like" Banach $*$-algebra which is purely infinite, but whose ultrapowers are not even simple, and hence not purely infinite. This algeb…
We prove that the automorphism group of a Cuntz algebra of finite order acts transitively on the set of pure states which are invariant under some gauge actions (which may depend on the states). The question of whether any pure state is invariant under some gauge action is left open, but for the senigroups of unital endomorphisms stronger transitivity properties can be established witout knowing the answer of this question.
If phantom Cuntz-Krieger algebras do not exist, then real rank zero Cuntz-Krieger algebras can be characterized by outer properties. In this survey paper, a summary of the known results on non-existence of phantom Cuntz-Krieger algebras is given.
We examine the ranks of operators in semi-finite C*-algebras as measured by their densely defined lower semicontinuous traces. We first prove that a unital simple C*-algebra whose extreme tracial boundary is nonempty and finite contains positive operators of every possible rank, independent of the property of strict comparison. We then turn to nonunital simple algebras and establish criteria that imply that the Cuntz semigroup is recovered functorially from the Murray-von Neumann semigroup and the space of densely defined lower semicontinuous traces. Finally, we prove that these criteria are s…
We define the relative Cuntz-Krieger algebras associated to finitely aligned higher-rank graphs. We prove versions of the gauge-invariant uniqueness theorem and the Cuntz-Krieger uniqueness theorem for relative Cuntz-Krieger algebras.
We show that if $A$ is a unital $C^*$-algebra and $B$ is a Cuntz-Krieger algebra for which $A\otimes\mathbb{K} \cong B\otimes\mathbb{K}$, then $A$ is a Cuntz-Krieger algebra. Consequently, corners of Cuntz-Krieger algebras are Cuntz-Krieger algebras.
We give a local characterization for the Cuntz semigroup of AI-algebras building upon Shen's characterization of dimension groups. Using this result, we provide an abstract characterization for the Cuntz semigroup of AI-algebras.
The Cuntz-Toeplitz algebra $E_{n+1}$ for $n\geq1$ is the universal C*-algebra generated by $n+1$ isometries with mutually orthogonal ranges. In this paper, we investigate the automorphism groups of the Cuntz-Toeplitz algebras and determine their homotopy groups.
Given a contractive tuple of Hilbert space operators satisfying certain $A$-relations we show that there exists a unique minimal dilation to generators of Cuntz-Krieger algebras or its extension by compact operators. This Cuntz-Krieger dilation can be obtained from the classical minimal isometric dilation as a certain maximal $A$-relation piece. We define a maximal piece more generally for a finite set of polynomials in $n$ noncommuting variables. We classify all representations of Cuntz-Krieger algebras ${\mathcal O}_A$ obtained from dilations of commuting tuples satisfying $A$-relations. The…
We provide an abstract characterization for the Cuntz semigroup of unital commutative AI-algebras, as well as a characterization for abstract Cuntz semigroups of the form $\text{Lsc} (X,\overline{\mathbb{N}})$ for some $T_1$-space $X$. In our investigations, we also uncover new properties that the Cuntz semigroup of all AI-algebras satisfies.
We investigate how a correspondence coaction gives rise to a coaction on the associated Cuntz-Pimsner algebra. We apply this to recover a recent result of Hao and Ng concerning Cuntz-Pimsner algebras of crossed products of correspondences by actions of amenable groups.
Higher rank semigraph algebras are introduced by mixing concepts of ultragraph algebras and higher rank graph algebras. This yields a kind of higher rank generalisation of ultragraph algebras. We prove Cuntz--Krieger uniqueness theorems for cancelling semigraph algebras and aperiodic full semigraph algebras.
Given a correspondence X over a C*-algebra A, we construct a C*-algebra and a Hilbert C*-bimodule over it whose crossed product is isomorphic to the augmented Cuntz-Pimsner C*-algebra of X. This construction enables us to establish a condition for two augmented Cuntz-Pimsner C*-algebras to be Morita equivalent.
We show that a C*-algebra "looking like" a Cuntz-Krieger algebra is a Cuntz-Krieger algebra. This implies that, in an appropriate sense, the class of Cuntz-Krieger algebras is closed under extensions of real rank zero.
In this article, we present a new method to study relative Cuntz-Krieger algebras for higher-rank graphs. We only work with edges rather than paths of arbitrary degrees. We then use this method to simplify the existing results about relative Cuntz-Krieger algebras. We also give applications to study ideals and quotients of Toeplitz algebras.
Given two correspondences X and Y, we show that (under mild hypotheses) the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra of the tensor product of X and Y embeds as a certain subalgebra of the tensor product of the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra of X and the Cuntz=Pimsner algebra of Y. Furthermore, this subalgebra can be described in a natural way in terms of the gauge actions on the Cuntz-Pimsner algebras. We explore implications for graph algebras, crossed products by the integers, and crossed products by completely positive maps. We also give a new proof of a result of Kaliszewski and Quigg related to coactions on correspo…
We show that a number of naturally occurring comparison relations on positive elements in a C*-algebra are equivalent to natural comparison properties of their corresponding open projections in the bidual of the C*-algebra. In particular we show that Cuntz comparison of positive elements corresponds to a comparison relation on open projections, that we call Cuntz comparison, and which is defined in terms of-and is weaker than-a comparison notion defined by Peligrad and Zsidó. The latter corresponds to a well-known comparison relation on positive elements defined by Blackadar. We show that Murr…
We give a simple and complete picture on the classification of relative Cuntz--Pimsner algebras (and so also of gauge-equivariant representations) using their intuitive parametrisation by kernel--covariance pairs.
We interpret the construction of relative Cuntz-Pimsner algebras of correspondences in terms of the correspondence bicategory, as a reflector into a certain sub-bicategory. This generalises a previous characterisation of absolute Cuntz-Pimsner algebras of proper correspondences as colimits in the correspondence bicategory.
We extend the definition of an extension of a right Hilbert module to the setting of Hilbert bimodules and show that an extension of Hilbert bimodules induces an extension of Cuntz-Pimsner algebras. We also study the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra associated to the multiplier bimodule and show that an extension can be realised as a restricted direct-sum bimodule.
We introduce a nonsymmetric, associative tensor product among representations of Cuntz algebras by using embeddings. We show the decomposition formulae of tensor products for permutative representations explicitly We apply decomposition formulae to determine properties of endomorphisms.
This paper argues that the unitary Cuntz semigroup, introduced in [10] and termed Cu$_1$, contains crucial information regarding the classification of non-simple C$^*$-algebras. We exhibit two (non-simple) C$^*$-algebras that agree on their Cuntz semigroups, termed Cu, and their K$_1$-groups and yet disagree at level of their unitary Cuntz semigroups. In the process, we establish that the unitary Cuntz semigroup contains rigorously more information about non-simple C$^*$-algebras than Cu and K$_1$ alone.
We investigate $C^*$-algebras associated with row-finite topological higher-rank graphs with no source, which are based on product system $C^*$-algebras. We prove the Cuntz-Krieger uniqueness theorem, and provide the condition of simplicity and purely infiniteness of our algebras. We give examples of non-discrete topological higher-rank graphs whose $C^*$-algebras contain Cuntz's $ax+b$-semigroup $C^*$-algebra over $\mathbb{N}$.
We calculate the Cuntz semigroup of the tensor product A with A. We restrict our attention to C*-algebras A which are unital, simple, nuclear, stably finite, have stable rank one, absorbs the Jiang-Su algebra tensorially and satisfy the UCT.
The (abstract) Cuntz algebra is generated by non-unitary isometries and has therefore no intrinsic finiteness properties. To approximate the elements of the Cuntz algebra by finite-dimensional objects, we thus consider a spatial discretization of this algebra by the finite sections method. For we represent the Cuntz algebra as a (concrete) algebra of operators on a Hilbert space and associate with each operator in this algebra the sequence of its finite sections. The goal of this paper is to examine the structure of the $C^*$-algebra which is generated by all sequences of this form. Our main r…
It is shown that Voiculescu's toplogical entropy for the canonical endomorphism of a simple Cuntz-Krieger algebra O_A equals the logarithm of the spectral radius of A.
It is shown that certain quasi-free flows on the Cuntz algebra $O_\infty$ have the Rohlin property and therefore are cocycle-conjugate with each other. This, in particular, shows that any unital separable nuclear purely infinite simple C*-algebra has a Rohlin flow.
The note presents a further study of the class of Cuntz--Krieger type algebras. A necessary and sufficient condition is identified that ensures that the algebra is purely infinite, the ideal structure is studied, % and applied to semigraph algebras, and nuclearity is proved by presenting the algebra as a crossed product of an AF-algebra by an abelian group. The results are applied to examples of Cuntz--Krieger type algebras, such as higher rank semigraph $C^*$-algebras and higher rank Exel-Laca algebras.
We consider a product system over the multiplicative semigroup N^x of Hilbert bimodules which is implicit in work of S. Yamashita and of the second named author. We prove directly, using universal properties, that the associated Nica-Toeplitz algebra is an extension of the C^*-algebra Q_N introduced recently by Cuntz.
Given a finitely aligned $k$-graph $Λ$, we let $Λ^i$ denote the $(k-1)$-graph formed by removing all edges of degree $e_i$ from $Λ$. We show that the Toeplitz-Cuntz-Krieger algebra of $Λ$, denoted by $\mathcal{T}C^*(Λ)$, may be realised as the Toeplitz algebra of a Hilbert $\mathcal{T}C^*(Λ^i)$-bimodule. When $Λ$ is locally-convex, we show that the Cuntz-Krieger algebra of $Λ$, which we denote by $C^*(Λ)$, may be realised as the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra of a Hilbert $C^*(Λ^i)$-bimodule. Consequently, $\mathcal{T}C^*(Λ)$ and $C^*(Λ)$ may be viewed as iterated Toeplitz and iterated Cuntz-Pimsner al…
We investigate crossed products of Cuntz algebras by quasi-free actions of abelian groups. We prove that our algebras are AF-embeddable when actions satisfy a certain condition. We also give a necessary and sufficient condition that our algebras become simple and purely infinite, and consequently our algebras are either purely infinite or AF-embeddable when they are simple.
We investigate the structures of crossed products of the Cuntz algebra ${\mathcal O}_\infty$ by quasi-free actions of abelian groups. We completely determine their ideal structures and compute the strong Connes spectra and K-groups.
We show that the dimension of the Cuntz semigroup of a C*-algebra is determined by the dimensions of the Cuntz semigroups of its separable sub-C*-algebras. This allows us to remove separability assumptions from previous results on the dimension of Cuntz semigroups. To obtain these results, we introduce a notion of approximation for abstract Cuntz semigroups that is compatible with the approximation of a C*-algebra by sub-C*-algebras. We show that many properties for Cuntz semigroups are preserved by approximation and satisfy a Löwenheim-Skolem condition.
For a row-finite higher-rank graph Λ, we construct a higher-rank graph TΛ such that the Toeplitz algebra of Λ is isomorphic to the Cuntz-Krieger algebra of TΛ. We then prove that the higher-rank graph TΛ is always aperiodic and use this fact to give another proof of a uniqueness theorem for the Toeplitz algebras of higher-rank graphs.
Let H be a full Hilbert bimodule over a C*-algebra A. We show that the Cuntz-Pimsner C*-algebra associated to H is exact if and only if A is exact. Using this result, we give alternative proofs for exactness of reduced amalgamated free products of exact C*-algebras. In the case that A is a finite dimensional C*-algebra, we also show that the Brown-Voiculescu topological entropy of Bogljubov automorphisms of the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra associated to an A,A Hilbert bimodule is zero.
In this paper we generalize the notion of Cuntz-Pimsner algebras of $C^*$-correspondences to the setting of subproduct systems. The construction is justified in several ways, including the Morita equivalence of the operator algebras under suitable conditions, and examples are provided to illustrate its naturality. We also demonstrate why some features of the Cuntz-Pimsner algebras of $C^*$-correspondences fail to generalize to our setting, and discuss what we have instead.
We investigate subalgebras $A$ of the Cuntz algebra ${\mathcal O}_n$ that arise as finite direct sums of corners of the UHF-subalgebra ${\mathcal F}_n$. For such an $A$, we completely determine its normalizer group inside ${\mathcal O}_n$.
We introduce and analyse the structure of C*-algebras arising from ideals in right tensor C*-precategories, which naturally generalize both relative Cuntz-Pimsner and Doplicher-Roberts algebras. We establish an explicit intrinsic construction of the considered algebras and a number of key results such as structure theorem, gauge-invariant uniqueness theorem or description of the gauge-invariant ideal structure. In particular, these statements give a new insight into the corresponding results for relative Cuntz-Pimsner algebras and are applied to Doplicher-Roberts associated to C*-correspondenc…
We construct a functor that maps $C^*$-correspondences to their Cuntz-Pimsner algebras. The objects in our domain category are $C^*$-correspondences, and the morphisms are the isomorphism classes of $C^*$-correspondences satisfying certain conditions. As an application, we recover a well-known result of Muhly and Solel. In fact, we show that functoriality leads us to a more generalized result: strongly Morita equivalent $C^*$-correspondences have Morita equivalent Cuntz-Pimsner algebras.
Motivated by the harmonic analysis of self-affine measures, we introduce a class of representations of the Cuntz algebra associated to random walks on graphs. The representations are constructed using the dilation theory of row coisometries. We study these representations, their commutant and the intertwining operators.
In this paper, we show that for unital, separable $C^*$-algebras of stable rank one and real rank zero, the unitary Cuntz semigroup functor and the functor ${\rm K}_*$ are naturallly equivalent. Then we introduce a refinement of the unitary Cuntz semigroup, say the total Cuntz semigroup, which is a new invariant for separable $C^*$-algebras of stable rank one, is a well-defined continuous functor from the category of $C^*$-algebras of stable rank one to the category ${\rm\underline{ Cu}}$. We prove that this new functor and the functor ${\rm \underline{K}}$ are naturallly equivalent for unital…
This paper contains computations of the Cuntz semigroup of separable C*-algebras of the form C_0(X,A), where A is a unital, simple, Z-stable ASH algebra. The computations describe the Cuntz semigroup in terms of Murray-von Neumann semigroups of C(K,A) for compact subsets K of X. In particular, the computation shows that the Elliott invariant is functorially equivalent to the invariant given by the Cuntz semigroup of C(T,A). These results are a contribution towards the goal of using the Cuntz semigroup in the classification of well-behaved non-simple C*-algebras.
Cuntz and Li have defined a C*-algebra associated to any integral domain, using generators and relations, and proved that it is simple and purely infinite and that it is stably isomorphic to a crossed product of a commutative C*-algebra. We give an approach to a class of C*-algebras containing those studied by Cuntz and Li, using the general theory of C*-dynamical systems associated to certain semidirect product groups. Even for the special case of the Cuntz-Li algebras, our development is new.
