Let $M=I$ or $M=\mathbb{S}^1$ and let $k\geq 1$. We exhibit a new infinite class of Polish groups by showing that each group $\mathop{\rm Diff}_+^{k+AC}(M)$, consisting of those $C^k$ diffeomorphisms whose $k$-th derivative is absolutely continuous, admits a natural Polish group topology which refines the subspace topology inherited from $\mathop{\rm Diff}_+^k(M)$. By contrast, the group $\mathop{\rm Diff}_+^{1+BV}(M)$, consisting of $C^1$ diffeomorphisms whose derivative has bounded variation, admits no Polish group topology whatsoever.
We show that the group $PSL(2,R)$ is a spherical subgroup in the group of $C^3$-diffeomorphisms of the circle. Also, the group of automorphisms of a Bruhat--Tits tree is a spherical subgroup in the group of hierarchomorphisms of the tree.
We initiate a study of distortion elements in the Polish groups $\mbox{Diff}_+^k(\mathbb{S}^1)$ ($1\leq k<\infty$), as well as $\mbox{Diff}_+^{1+AC}(\mathbb{S}^1)$, in terms of maximal metrics on these groups. We classify distortion in the $k=1$ case: a $C^1$ circle diffeomorphism is $C^1$-undistorted if and only if it has a hyperbolic periodic point. On the other hand, answering a question of Navas, we exhibit analytic circle diffeomorphisms with only non-hyperbolic fixed points which are $C^{1+AC}$-undistorted, and hence $C^k$-undistorted for all $k\geq 2$. In the appendix, we exhibit a maxi…
We study the projective derivative as a cocycle of Möbius transformations over groups of circle diffeomorphisms. By computing precise expressions for this cocycle, we obtain several results about reducibility and almost reducibility to a cocycle of rotations. We also introduce an extension of this cocycle to the diagonal action on the 3-torus for which we generalize the previous results.
We show that loop groups and the universal cover of $\mathrm{Diff}_+(S^1)$ can be expressed as colimits of groups of loops/diffeomorphisms supported in subintervals of $S^1$. Analogous results hold for based loop groups and for the based diffeomorphism group of $S^1$. These results continue to hold for the corresponding centrally extended groups. We use the above results to construct a comparison functor from the representations of a loop group conformal net to the representations of the corresponding affine Lie algebra. We also establish an equivalence of categories between solitonic represen…
We construct a finitely presented, infinite, simple group that acts by homeomorphisms on the circle, but does not admit a non-trivial action by $C^1$-diffeomorphisms on the circle. The group emerges as a group of piecewise projective homeomorphisms of $S^1=\mathbf{R}\cup \{\infty\}$. However, we show that it does not admit a non-trivial action by piecewise linear homeomorphisms of the circle. Another interesting and new feature of this example is that it produces a non amenable orbit equivalence relation with respect to the Lebesgue measure.
We show how to approximate diffeomorphisms of the closed interval and the circle by elements of Thompson's groups $F$ and $T$, respectively. This is relevant in the context of Jones' continuum limit of discrete multipartite systems and its dynamics.
What kind of dynamics do we observe in general on the circle? It depends somehow on the interpretation of "in general". Everything is quite well understood in the topological (Baire) setting, but what about the probabilistic sense? The main problem is that on an infinite dimensional group there is no analogue of the Lebesgue measure, in a strict sense. There are however some analogues, quite natural and easy to define: the Malliavin-Shavgulidze measures provide an example and constitute the main character of this text. The first results show that there is no actual disagreement of general feat…
We determine the bounded cohomology of the group of homeomorphisms of certain low-dimensional manifolds. In particular, for the group of orientation-preserving homeomorphisms of the circle and of the closed 2-disc, it is isomorphic to the polynomial ring generated by the bounded Euler class. These seem to be the first examples of groups for which the entire bounded cohomology can be described without being trivial. We further prove that, contrary to ordinary cohomology, the diffeomorphisms groups of the circle and of the closed 2-disc have the same bounded cohomology as their homeomorphism gro…
We show that no finite index subgroup of a sufficiently complicated mapping class group or braid group can act faithfully by $C^{1+\mathrm{bv}}$ diffeomorphisms on the circle, which generalizes a result of Farb-Franks, and which parallels a result of Ghys and Burger-Monod concerning differentiable actions of higher rank lattices on the circle. This answers a question of Farb, which has its roots in the work of Nielsen. We prove this result by showing that if a right-angled Artin group acts faithfully by $C^{1+\mathrm{bv}}$ diffeomorphisms on a compact one-manifold, then its defining graph has …
This article takes the inspiration from two milestones in the study of non minimal actions of groups on the circle: Duminy's theorem about the number of ends of semi-exceptional leaves and Ghys' freeness result in analytic regularity. Our first result concerns groups of analytic diffeomorphisms with infinitely many ends: if the action is non expanding, then the group is virtually free. The second result is a Duminy's theorem for minimal codimension one foliations: either non expandable leaves have infinitely many ends, or the holonomy pseudogroup preserves a projective structure.
We provide a smoothening criterion for group actions on manifolds by singular diffeomorphisms. We prove that if a countable group $Γ$ has the fixed point property FW for walls (e.g. if it has property (T)), every aperiodic action of $Γ$ by diffeomorphisms that are of class $C^r$ with countably many singularities is conjugate to an action by true diffeomorphisms of class $C^r$ on a homeomorphic (possibly non-diffeomorphic) manifold. As applications, we show that Navas's result for actions of Kazhdan groups on the circle, as well as the recent solutions to Zimmer's conjecture, generalise to aper…
