Abelian Extensions of the Group of Diffeomorphisms of a Torus

In this paper we construct abelian extensions of the group of diffeomorphisms of a torus. We consider the jacobian map, which is a crossed homomorphism from the group of diffeomorphisms into a toroidal gauge group. A pull-back under this map of a central 2-cocycle on a gauge group turns out to be an abelian cocycle on the group of diffeomorphisms. We show that in the case of a circle, the Virasoro-Bott cocycle is a pull-back of the Heisenberg cocycle. We also give an abelian generalization of the Virasoro-Bott cocycle to the case of a manifold with a volume form.

On the autonomous norm on the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of the torus

We prove that the autonomous norm on the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of the two-dimensional torus is unbounded. We provide explicit examples of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms with arbitrarily large autonomous norm. For the proofs we construct quasimorphisms on $Ham(T^2)$ and some of them are Calabi.

Global Rigidity of Some Abelian-by-Cyclic group actions on $\T^2$

For groups of diffeomorphisms of $\T^2$ containing an Anosov diffeomorphism, we give a complete classification for polycyclic Abelian-by-Cyclic group actions on $\T^2$ up to both topological conjugacy and smooth conjugacy under mild assumptions. Along the way, we also prove a Tits alternative type theorem for some groups of diffeomorphisms of $\T^2$.

Quasi-Isometric Embeddings into Diffeomorphism Groups

Let M be a smooth compact connected oriented manifold of dimension at least two endowed with a volume form. Assuming certain conditions on the fundamental group $π_1(M)$ we construct quasi-isometric embeddings of either free Abelian or direct products of non-Abelian free groups into the group of volume preserving diffeomorphisms of M equipped with the L^p metric induced by a Riemannian metric on M.

Diffeomorphism Groups of Compact 4-manifolds are not always Jordan

We show that if $M$ is a compact smooth manifold diffeomorphic to the total space of an orientable $S^2$ bundle over the torus $T^2$, then its diffeomorphism group does not have the Jordan property, i.e., Diff$(M)$ contains a finite subgroup $G_n$ for any natural number $n$ such that every abelian subgroup of $G_n$ has index at leat $n$. This gives a counterexample to an old conjecture of Ghys.

Groups of smooth diffeomorphisms of Cantor sets embedded in a line

Let K be a Cantor set embedded in the real line R. Following Funar and Neretin, we define the diffeomorphism group of K as the group of homeomorphisms of K which locally look like a diffeomorphism between two intervals of R. Higman-Thompson's groups Vn appear as subgroups of such groups. In this article, we prove some properties of this group. First, we study the Burnside problem in this group and we prove that any finitely generated subgroup consisting of finite order elements is finite. On the projective derivative cocycle for circle diffeomorphisms

We study the projective derivative as a cocycle of Möbius transformations over groups of circle diffeomorphisms. By computing precise expressions for this cocycle, we obtain several results about reducibility and almost reducibility to a cocycle of rotations. We also introduce an extension of this cocycle to the diagonal action on the 3-torus for which we generalize the previous results.

On the bordism group for group actions on the torus

In this short note, we study the bordism problem for group actions on the torus and give examples of groups acting on the torus by diffeomorphisms isotopic to the identity that cannot be extended to an action on a bounding 3-manifold. This solves a question raised in the previous work of the authors.

Representations of the quantum torus and applications to finitely presented groups

A structure theorem is proved for strongly holonomic modules over a quantum torus (a crossed product of a field with a free abelian group in which the field is central). This can be applied to give a structure theorem for finitely presented abelian-by-nilpotent groups.

Non Jordan groups of diffeomorphisms and actions of compact Lie groups on manifolds

A recent preprint of Csikós, Pyber and Szabó (arXiv:1411.7524) proves that the diffeomorphism group of $T^2\times S^2$ is not Jordan. The purpose of this paper is to generalize the arguments of Csikós, Pyber and Szabó in order to obtain many other examples of compact manifolds whose diffeomorphism group fails to be Jordan. In particular we prove that for any $ε>0$ there exist manifolds admitting effective actions of arbitrarily large $p$-groups $Γ$ all of whose abelian subgroups have at most $|Γ|^ε$ elements.
