By tuning the magnetic flux, the two ends of a 1D topological superconductor weakly coupled to a normal metal as a ring-shaped junction can host split Majorana zero modes (MZMs). When this ring geometry becomes Coulomb blockaded, and the two leads come into contact with the two wire ends, the current moves through the superconductor or the normal metal as an interferometer. The two-terminal interference conductance can be experimentally measured as a function of gate voltage and magnetic flux through the ring. However, a $4π$ periodicity in the conductance-phase relation (often considered the hallmark of MZMs), which can arise both in a topological superconductor and in a trivial metal, cannot establish the existence of MZMs. We show that the trivial metal phase can be ruled out in favor of a topological superconductor by studying persistent conductance distribution patterns. In particular, in the presence of MZMs, the conductance peak spacings of the Coulomb blockaded junction would manifest line crossings as the magnetic flux varies. The locations of the line crossings can distinguish line crossings stemming from the trivial metal.
We study coherent electronic transport through a Coulomb blockaded superconducting Rashba wire in the co-tunneling regime between conductance resonances. By varying an external Zeeman field the wire can be tuned into a topological regime, where non-local transport through Majorana zero modes is the dominant mechanism. We model coherent transport in the co-tunneling regime by using a scattering matrix formalism, and find that the transmission amplitude has a maximum as a function of Zeeman field, whose height is proportional to the wire length. We relate the transmission amplitude to the Majora…
We present a study of the transmission of electrons through a semiconductor quantum wire with strong spin-orbit coupling in proximity to an s-wave superconductor, which is Coulomb-blockaded. Such a system supports Majorana zero modes in the presence of an external magnetic field. Without superconductivity, phase lapses are expected to occur in the transmission phase, and we find that they disappear when a topological superconducting phase is stabilized. We express tunneling through the nanowire with the help of effective matrix elements, which depend on both the fermion parity of the wire and …
Recent tunneling spectroscopy experiments in semiconducting nanowires with proximity-induced superconductivity have reported robust zero-bias conductance peaks. Such a feature can be compatible with the existence of topological Majorana bound states (MBSs) and with a trivial Andreev bound state (ABS) near zero energy. Here, we argue that additional information, that can distinguish between the two cases, can be extracted from Coulomb-blockade experiments of Majorana islands. The key is the ratio of peak heights of consecutive conductance peaks give information about the electron and hole compo…
Coulomb blockaded transport of topological superconducting nanowires provides an opportunity to probe the localization of states at both ends of the system in a two-terminal geometry. In addition, it provides a way for checking for subgap states away from the leads. At the same time, Coulomb blockade transport is difficult to analyze because of the interacting nature of the problem arising from the nonperturbative Coulomb interaction inherent in the phenomenon. Here we show that the Coulomb blockade transport can be modeled at the same level of complexity as quantum point contact tunneling tha…
In the presence of an applied magnetic field introducing Zeeman spin splitting, a superconducting (SC) proximitized one-dimensional (1D) nanowire with spin-orbit coupling can pass through a topological quantum phase transition developing zero-energy topological Majorana bound states (MBSs) on the wire ends. One of the promising experimental platforms in this context is a Coulomb blockaded island, where by measuring the two-terminal conductance one can in principle investigate the MBS properties. We theoretically study the tunneling transport of a single electron across the superconducting Coul…
We consider statistical correlations between the heights of conductance peaks corresponding to two different levels in a Coulomb-blockaded quantum dot. Correlations exist for two peaks at the same magnetic field if the field does not fully break time-reversal symmetry as well as for peaks at different values of a magnetic field that fully breaks time-reversal symmetry. Our results are also relevant to Coulomb-blockade conductance peak height statistics in the presence of weak spin-orbit coupling in a chaotic quantum dot.
Subgap states are responsible for the low-bias transport features of hybrid superconducting--semiconducting devices. Here, we analyze the local and nonlocal differential conductance of Coulomb-blockaded multiterminal superconducting islands that host subgap states with different spatial structures. The emerging patterns of their transport spectroscopy are used to characterize the possible topological nature of these devices and offer the possibility of controlling their transport properties. We develop a next-to-leading order master equation to describe the multiterminal transport in supercond…
We report measurements of mesoscopic fluctuations of elastic cotunneling in Coulomb blockaded quantum dots. Unlike resonant tunneling on Coulomb peaks, cotunneling in the valleys is sensitive to charging effects. We observe a larger magnetic field scale for the cotunneling (valley) fluctuations compared to the peaks, as well as an absence of "weak localization" (reduced conductance at B = 0) in valleys. Cotunneling fluctuations remain correlated over several valleys while peak conductance correlations decreases quickly.
We investigate the two-terminal nonlinear conductance of a Coulomb-blockaded quantum dot attached to chiral edge states. Reversal of the applied magnetic field inverts the system chirality and leads to a different polarization charge. As a result, the current--voltage characteristic is not an even function of the magnetic field. We show that the corresponding magnetic-field asymmetry arises from single-charge effects and vanishes in the limit of high temperature.
We consider quantum transport and tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) through an interacting quantum dot in the Coulomb blockade regime, attached to ferromagnetic leads. We show that there exist two kinds of anomalies of TMR, which have different origin. One type, associated with TMR sign change and appearing at conductance resonances, is of single particle origin. The second type, inducing a pronounced increase of TMR value far beyond 100%, is caused by electron correlations. It is manifested in-between Coulomb blockade conductance peaks. Both types of anomalies are discussed for zero and finit…
We have investigated the influence of shot noise on the IV-curves of a single mesoscopic Josephson junction. We observe a linear enhancement of zero-bias conductance of the Josephson junction with increasing shot noise power. Moreover, the IV-curves become increasingly asymmetric. Our analysis on the asymmetry shows that the Coulomb blockade of Cooper pairs is strongly influenced by the non-Gaussian character of the shot noise.
We have investigated how the Coulomb blockade of a mesoscopic Josephson junction in a high-impedance environment is suppressed by shot noise from an adjacent junction. The presented theoretical analysis is an extension of the phase correlation theory for the case of a non-Gaussian noise. Asymmetry of the non-Gaussian noise should result in the shift of the conductance minimum from zero voltage and the ratchet effect (nonzero current at zero voltage), which have been experimentally observed. The analysis demonstrates that a Coulomb blockaded tunnel junction in a high impedance environment can b…
Experimental evidence for Majorana bound states largely relies on measurements of the tunneling conductance. While the conductance into a Majorana state is in principle quantized to $2e^2/h$, observation of this quantization has been elusive, presumably due to temperature broadening in the normal-metal lead. Here, we propose to use a superconducting lead instead, whose gap strongly suppresses thermal excitations. For a wide range of tunneling strengths and temperatures, a Majorana state is then signaled by symmetric conductance peaks at $eV=\pmΔ$ with quantized height $G=(4-π)2e^2/h$. For a su…
The successful test of non-Abelian statistics not only serves as a milestone in fundamental physics but also provides a quantum gate operation in topological quantum computation. An accurate and efficient readout scheme of a topological qubit is an essential step toward the experimental confirmation of non-Abelian statistics. In the current work, we propose a protocol to read out the quantum state of a Majorana vortex qubit on a topological superconductor island. The protocol consists of four Majorana zero modes trapped in spatially well-separated vortex cores on the two-dimensional surface of…
We investigate the dynamics of a charge qubit consisting of two Coulomb-blockaded islands hosting Majorana zero modes. The frequency of the qubit is determined by coherent single-electron tunneling between two islands originating from the hybridization of two Majorana zero modes localized at the junction. We calculate the sequential tunneling current $I$ through the double-island device coupled to normal metal leads. We demonstrate that the $I\!-\!V$ characteristics in the large-bias regime can be used as a measurement of the coherent Majorana coupling $E_M$. We propose dc and ac transport exp…
Chiral $p$-wave superconductor is the primary example of topological systems hosting chiral Majorana edge states. Although candidate materials exist, the conclusive signature of chiral Majorana edge states has not yet been observed in experiments. Here we propose a smoking-gun experiment to detect the chiral Majorana edge states on the basis of theoretical results for the nonlocal conductance in a device consisting of a chiral $p$-wave superconductor and two ferromagnetic leads. The chiral nature of Majorana edge states causes an anomalously long-range and chirality-sensitive nonlocal transpor…
Quantum dots and single-molecule transistors may exhibit level crossings induced by tuning external parameters such as magnetic field or gate voltage. For Coulomb blockaded devices, this shows up as an inelastic cotunneling threshold in the differential conductance, which can be tuned to zero at the crossing. Here we show that, in addition, level crossings can give rise to a nearly vertical step-edge, ridge or even a Fano-like ridge-valley feature in the differential conductance inside the relevant Coulomb diamond. We study a gate-tunable quasidegeneracy between singlet and triplet ground stat…
We analyze the heat current flowing across interacting quantum dots within the Coulomb blockade regime. Power can be generated by either voltage or temperature biases. In the former case, we find nonlinear contributions to the Peltier effect that are dominated by conventional Joule heating for sufficiently high voltages. In the latter case, the differential thermal conductance shows maxima or minima depending on the energy level position. Furthermore, we discuss departures from the Kelvin-Onsager reciprocity relation beyond linear response.
A one-dimensional semiconductor nanowire proximitized by a nearby superconductor may become a topological superconductor hosting localized Majorana zero modes at the two wire ends in the presence of spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman spin splitting (arising from an external magnetic field). The hallmark of the presence of such Majorana zero modes is the appearance of a zero-temperature quantized zero-bias conductance peak in the tunneling spectroscopy of the Majorana nanowire. We theoretically study the temperature and the tunnel coupling dependence of the tunneling conductance in such nanowires t…
Quantum thermodynamics is a promising route to unambiguous detections of Majorana bound states. Being fundamentally different from quantum transport, this approach reveals unique Majorana thermodynamic behavior and deepens our insight into Majorana quantum transport itself. Here we demonstrate that a nanoscopic system with topological superconductors produces a remarkable accumulation of Majorana thermodynamic states in wide ranges of Majorana tunneling phases by means of increasing its temperature $T$. Revealing this physical behavior is twofold beneficial. First, it significantly reduces the…
Universal fractionalization of quantum transport characteristics in Majorana quantum dot devices is expected to emerge for well separated Majorana bound states. We show that the Majorana universality of the differential shot noise $\partial S^>/\partial V$ and conductance $\partial I/\partial V$ at low bias voltages $V$ arises only in ideal setups with only one Majorana mode entangled with the quantum dot. In realistic devices, where both Majorana modes are entangled with the quantum dot, $\partial S^>/\partial V$ and $\partial I/\partial V$ become very sensitive to tunneling phases and their …
We report an experimental study of the scaling of zero-bias conductance peaks compatible with Majorana zero modes as a function of magnetic field, tunnel coupling, and temperature in one-dimensional structures fabricated from an epitaxial semiconductor-superconductor heterostructure. Results are consistent with theory, including a peak conductance that is proportional to tunnel coupling, saturates at $2e^2/h$, decreases as expected with field-dependent gap, and collapses onto a simple scaling function in the dimensionless ratio of temperature and tunnel coupling.
Conductance at zero source-drain voltage bias in InSb nanowire/NbTiN superconductor devices exhibits peaks that are close to a quantized value of $2e^2/h$. The nearly quantized resonances evolve in the tunnel barrier strength, magnetic field and magnetic field orientation in a way consistent with Majorana zero modes. Our devices feature two tunnel probes on both ends of the nanowire separated by a 400 nm nanowire segment covered by the superconductor. We only find nearly quantized zero bias peaks localized to one end of the nanowire, while conductance dips are observed for the same parameters …
Experimental evidence for Majorana bound states (MBSs) is so far mainly based on the robustness of a zero-bias conductance peak. However, similar features can also arise due to Andreev bound states (ABSs) localized at the end of an island. We show that these two scenarios can be distinguished by an interferometry experiment based on embedding a Coulomb-blockaded island into an Aharonov-Bohm ring. For two ABSs, when the ground state is nearly degenerate, cotunneling can change the state of the island and interference is suppressed. By contrast, for two MBSs the ground state is nondegenerate and…
We study transport through a Coulomb blockaded topologically nontrivial superconducting wire (with Majorana end states) contacted by metallic leads. An exact formula for the current through this interacting Majorana single-charge transistor is derived in terms of wire spectral functions. A comprehensive picture follows from three different approaches. We find Coulomb oscillations with universal halving of the finite-temperature peak conductance under strong blockade conditions, where the valley conductance mainly comes from elastic cotunneling. The nonlinear conductance exhibits finite-voltage…
We show that a topologically trivial zero bias conductance peak (of height 4e^2/h) is produced in semiconductor-superconductor hybrid nanowires due to a suppressed pair potential and/or an excess Zeeman field at the ends of the heterostructure, both of which can occur in experiments. The zero bias peak (ZBP) (a) appears above a threshold parallel bulk Zeeman field, (b) is stable for a range of bulk field before splitting, (c) disappears with rotation of the bulk Zeeman field, and, (d) is robust to weak disorder fluctuations. The ZBPs from the nanowire ends are also expected to produce splittin…
We consider theoretically tunneling characteristic of a junction between a normal metal and a chain of coupled Majorana bound states generated at crossings between topological and non-topological superconducting sections, as a result of, for example, disorder in nanowires. While an isolated Majorana state supports a resonant Andreev process, yielding a zero bias differential conductance peak of height 2e^2/h, the situation with more coupled Majorana states is distinctively different with both zeros and 2e^2/h peaks in the differential conductance. We derive a general expression for the current…
We propose an experimental setup for detecting a Majorana zero mode consisting of a spinless quantum dot coupled to the end of a p-wave superconducting nanowire. The Majorana bound state at the end of the wire strongly influences the conductance through the quantum dot: Driving the wire through the topological phase transition causes a sharp jump in the conductance by a factor of 1/2. In the topological phase, the zero temperature peak value of the dot conductance (i.e. when the dot is on resonance and symmetrically coupled to the leads) is e^2/2h. In contrast, if the wire is in its trivial ph…
We study the conductance afforded by a normal-metal probe which is directly contacting the helical edge modes of a quantum spin Hall insulator (QSHI). We show a $2e^2/h$ conductance peak at zero temperature in QSHI-based superconductor--ferromagnet hybrids due to the formation of a single Majorana bound state (MBS). In a corresponding Josephson junction hosting a pair of MBSs, a $4e^2/h$ conductance peak is found at zero temperature. The conductance quantization is robust to changes of the relevant system parameters and, remarkably, remains unaltered with increasing the distance between probe …
Helical superconductors form a two dimensional, time-reversal invariant topological phase characterized by a Kramers pair of Majorana edge modes (helical Majorana modes). Existing detection schemes to identify this phase rely either on spin transport properties, which are quite difficult to measure, or on local charge transport, which allows only a partial identification. Here we show that the presence of helical Majorana modes can be unambiguously revealed by measuring the nonlocal charge conductance. Focusing on a superconducting ring, we suggest two experiments that provide unique and robus…
A semiconducting nanowire with strong Rashba coupling and in proximity of a superconductor hosts Majorana edge modes. An array of such nanowires with inter-wire coupling gives an approximate description of a two-dimensional topological superconductor, where depending on the strength of the magnetic field and the chemical potential, a rich phase diagram hosting trivial and different types of non-trivial phases can be achieved. Here, we theoretically consider such a two-dimensional assembly of spin-orbit coupled superconducting nanowires and calculate the collective tunneling conductance between…
We investigate persistent currents in metallic rings interrupted by a Coulomb blockaded topological superconducting segment. We show that the presence of Majorana bound states in the superconductor is reflected in the emergence of an h/e harmonics in the persistent current, whose sign is determined by the fermion parity of the superconductor. The Majorana bound states further render the current finite at zero flux, nevertheless the resulting peculiar symmetry of the persistent current is compatible with a free energy that is even in time-reversal symmetry breaking fields. These unique features…
Motivated by a recent experimental report[1] claiming the likely observation of the Majorana mode in a semiconductor-superconductor hybrid structure[2,3,4,5], we study theoretically the dependence of the zero bias conductance peak associated with the zero-energy Majorana mode in the topological superconducting phase as a function of temperature, tunnel barrier potential, and a magnetic field tilted from the direction of the wire for realistic wires of finite lengths. We find that higher temperatures and tunnel barriers as well as a large magnetic field in the direction transverse to the wire l…
The Majorana search is caught up in an extensive debate about the false-positive signals from non-topological Andreev bound states (ABSs). We introduce a remedy using the dissipative probe to generate electron-boson interaction. We theoretically show that the interaction-induced renormalization leads to significantly distinct universal zero-bias conductance behaviors, i.e. distinct characteristic power-law in temperature, for different types of Andreev reflections, which shows a sharp contrast to that of a Majorana zero mode. Various specific cases have been studied, including the cases that t…
We consider a mesoscopic superconducting island hosting multiple pairs of Majorana zero-energy modes. The Majorana island consists of multiple p-wave wires connected together by a trivial (s-wave) superconducting backbone and is characterized by an overall charging energy $E_C$; the wires are coupled to normal-metal leads via tunnel junctions. We calculate the average charge on the island as well as non-local conductance matrix as a function of a p-wave pairing gap $Δ_P$, charging energy $E_C$ and dimensionless junction conductances $g_i$. We find that the presence of a topological ground-stat…
We propose a universal gate set acting on a qubit formed by the degenerate ground states of a Coulomb-blockaded time-reversal invariant topological superconductor island with spatially separated Majorana Kramers pairs: the "Majorana Kramers Qubit". All gate operations are implemented by coupling the Majorana Kramers pairs to conventional superconducting leads. Interestingly, in such an all-superconducting device, the energy gap of the leads provides another layer of protection from quasiparticle poisoning independent of the island charging energy. Moreover, the absence of strong magnetic field…
One of the simplest proposed experimental probes of a Majorana bound-state is a quantized (2e^2/h) value of zero-bias tunneling conductance. When temperature is somewhat larger than the intrinsic width of the Majorana peak, conductance is no longer quantized, but a zero-bias peak can remain. Such a non-quantized zero-bias peak has been recently reported for semiconducting nanowires with proximity induced superconductivity. In this paper we analyze the relation of the zero-bias peak to the presence of Majorana end-states, by simulating the tunneling conductance for multi-band wires with realist…
Despite recent experimental progress towards observing large zero-bias conductance peaks (ZBCPs) as signatures of Majorana modes, confusion remains about whether Majorana modes have been observed. This is in part due to the theoretical prediction of fine-tuned trivial (i.e., non-topological) zero-bias peaks that occur because of uncontrolled quantum dots or disorder potentials. While many aspects of the topological phase can be somewhat fine-tuned because the topological phase space is often small, the quantized height of the ZBCP associated with a Majorana mode is known to be robust at suffic…
Majorana zero modes can appear at the wire ends of a 1D topological superconductor and manifest themselves as a quantized zero-bias conductance peak in the tunneling spectroscopy of normal-superconductor junctions. However, in superconductor-semiconductor hybrid nanowires, zero-bias conductance peaks may arise owing to topologically trivial mechanisms as well, mimicking the Majorana-induced topological peak in many aspects. In this work, we systematically investigate the characteristics of zero-bias conductance peaks for topological Majorana bound states, trivial quasi-Majorana bound states an…
We study a topological superconductor island with spatially separated Majorana modes coupled to multiple normal metal leads by single electron tunneling in the Coulomb blockade regime. We show that low-temperature transport in such Majorana island is carried by an emergent charge-$e$ boson composed of a Majorana mode and an electron from the leads. This transmutation from Fermi to Bose statistics has remarkable consequences. For noninteracting leads, the system flows to a non-Fermi liquid fixed point, which is stable against tunnel couplings anisotropy or detuning away from the charge-degenera…
We address the question about the origin of the $\frac12 \frac{e^2}{h}$ conductance plateau observed in a recent experiment on an integer quantum Hall (IQH) film covered by a superconducting (SC) film. Since 1-dimensional (1D) chiral Majorana fermions on the edge of the above device can give rise to the half quantized plateau, such a plateau was regarded as a smoking-gun evidence for the chiral Majorana fermions. However, in this paper we give another mechanism for the $\frac12 \frac{e^2}{h}$ conductance plateau. We find the $\frac12 \frac{e^2}{h}$ conductance plateau to be a general feature o…
Rashba spin-orbit coupled semiconductor-superconductor hybrid structures in the presence of Zeeman splitting have emerged as the first experimentally realizable topological superconductor supporting zero-energy Majorana bound states. However, recent experimental studies in these hybrid structures are not in complete agreement with the theoretical predictions, for example, the observed height of the zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP) associated with the Majorana bound states is less than 10% of the predicted quantized value 2e^2/h. We try to understand the sources of various discrepancies betwee…
Fracton topological phases host fractionalized topological quasiparticles with restricted mobility, with promising applications to fault-tolerant quantum computation. While a variety of exactly solvable fracton models have been proposed, there is a need for platforms to realize them experimentally. We show that a rich set of fracton phases emerges in interacting Majorana band models whose building blocks are within experimental reach. Specifically, our Majorana constructions overcome a principal obstacle, namely the implementation of the complicated spin cluster interactions underlying fracton…
We investigate the conductance of an Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interferometer coupled to a quantum dot and two Majorana bound states on the edge of the topological superconductor with finite length. When the tunnel couplings between the Majorana bound states and the Aharonov-Bohm interferometer are fixed to the specific phase, the differential conductance becomes zero irrespective of all the parameters as long as the hoppings to the two Majorana fermions on the opposite side are equal. The conductance at the zero bias voltage does not change with the magnetic flux penetrating the ring for all cases. …
We propose a conductance measurement to detect the backscattering of chiral Majorana edge states. Because normal and Andreev processes have equal probability for backscattering of a single chiral Majorana edge state, there is qualitative difference from backscattering of a chiral Dirac edge state, giving rise to half-integer Hall conductivity and decoupling of fluctuation in incoming and outgoing modes. The latter can be detected through thermal noise measurement. These experimental signatures of Majorana fermions are robust at finite temperature and do not require the size of the backscatteri…
Majorana zero-modes hold great promise for topological quantum computing. Tunnelling spectroscopy in electrical transport is the primary tool to identify the presence of Majorana zero-modes, for instance as a zero-bias peak (ZBP) in differential-conductance. The Majorana ZBP-height is predicted to be quantized at the universal conductance value of 2e2/h at zero temperature. Interestingly, this quantization is a direct consequence of the famous Majorana symmetry, 'particle equals antiparticle'. The Majorana symmetry protects the quantization against disorder, interactions, and variations in the…
Superconducting devices subject to strong charging energy interactions and Coulomb blockade are one of the key elements for the development of nanoelectronics and constitute common building blocks of quantum computation platforms and topological superconducting setups. The study of their transport properties is non-trivial and some of their non-perturbative aspects are hard to capture with the most ordinary techniques. Here we present a matrix product state approach to simulate the real-time dynamics of these systems. We propose a study of their transport based on the analysis of the currents …
We consider a quantum dot coupled to a topological superconductor and two normal leads and study transport properties of the system. Using Keldysh path-integral approach, we study current fluctuations (shot noise) within the low-energy effective theory. We argue that the combination of the tunneling conductance and the shot noise through a quantum dot allows one to distinguish between the topological (Majorana) and non-topological (e.g., Kondo) origin of the zero-bias conduction peak. Specifically, we show that, while the tunneling conductance might exhibit zero-bias anomaly due to Majorana or…
We calculate the linear conductance of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG)-based junction between a normal semiconductor section and a hybrid semiconductor-superconductor section, under perpendicular magnetic field. We consider two important terms often neglected in the literature, the magneto-orbital and transverse Rashba spin-orbit. The strong orbital effect due to the magnetic field yields topological phase transitions to nontrivial phases hosting Majorana modes in the hybrid section. The presence of a potential barrier at the junction interface reveals the Majorana phases as quantized pl…
Theoretical research suggests a emergence of the Majorana bound states at the ends of the nanowires. Experimental verifications of said concept has already been executed, e.g., in superconductor/semiconductor nanowire devices where interplay between superconducting gap, spin-orbit coupling and external magnetic field allows for creation of zero-energy bound states. Recent experiments propose a topological phase diagram by local modification of the effective chemical potential. We discuss this possibility, using a model of experimental system in form of semi-infinite S/N junction. We calculate …
We predict conductance oscillations in a quantum-anomalous Hall 2d strip having a superconducting region of length $L_x$ with a chiral Majorana mode. These oscillations require a finite transverse extension of the strip $L_y$ of a few microns or less. Measuring the conductance periodicity with $L_x$ and a fixed bias, or with bias and a fixed $L_x$, yields the speed of the chiral Majorana mode. The physical mechanism behind the oscillations is the interference between backscattered chiral modes from second to first interface of the NSN double junction. The interferometer effect is enhanced by t…
We theoretically consider transport properties of a normal metal (N)- superconducting semiconductor nanowire (S)-normal metal (N) structure (NSN) in the context of the possible existence of Majorana bound states in disordered semiconductor-superconductor hybrid systems in the presence of spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman splitting induced by an external magnetic field. We study in details the transport signatures of the topological quantum phase transition as well as the existence of the Majorana bound states in the electrical transport properties of the NSN structure. Our theory includes the rea…
We study charge transport in a single-electron transistor implemented as an interferometer such that the Coulomb blockaded middle island contains a circular chiral Majorana or Dirac edge mode. We concentrate on the regime of small conductance and provide an asymptotic solution in the limit of high transport voltage exceeding the charging energy. The solution is achieved using an instanton-like technique. The distinctions between Majorana and Dirac cases appears when the tunnel junctions are unequal. The main difference is in the offset current at high voltages which can be higher up to $50\%$ …
The Floquet topological superconducting state is a nonequilibrium time-periodic state hosting Majorana fermions. We study its transport properties by using the Kitaev model with time-periodic incommensurate potentials, which experiences phase transition from the Floquet topological superconducting phase to the Anderson localized phase with increasing driving strength. We study both the real time dynamics of the current and the non-analytic behavior of the tunneling conductance at the transition. Especially, we find that the tunneling conductance changes continuously at the transition, being a …
We report on several low temperature experiments supporting the presence of Majorana fermions in superconducting lead nanowires fabricated with a scanning tunneling microscope. These nanowires are the connecting bridges between the STM tip and the sample resulting from indentation processes. We show here that by a controlled tuning of the geometry of the nanowire region, in which superconductivity is confined by applied magnetic fields, the conductance curves obtained in these situations are indicative of topological superconductivity and Majorana fermions. The most prominent feature of this b…
Superconducting wires with broken time-reversal and spin-rotational symmetries can exhibit two distinct topological gapped phases and host bound Majorana states at the phase boundaries. When the wire is tuned to the transition between these two phases and the gap is closed, Majorana states become delocalized leading to a peculiar critical state of the system. We study transport properties of this critical state as a function of the length $L$ of a disordered multichannel wire. Applying a non-linear supersymmetric sigma model of symmetry class D with two replicas, we identify the average conduc…
Two-terminal conductance spectroscopy of superconducting devices is a common tool for probing Andreev and Majorana bound states. Here, we study theoretically a three-terminal setup, with two normal leads coupled to a grounded superconducting terminal. Using a single-electron scattering matrix, we derive the subgap conductance matrix for the normal leads and discuss its symmetries. In particular, we show that the local and the nonlocal elements of the conductance matrix have pairwise identical antisymmetric components. Moreover, we find that the nonlocal elements are directly related to the loc…
