Helical superconductors form a two dimensional, time-reversal invariant topological phase characterized by a Kramers pair of Majorana edge modes (helical Majorana modes). Existing detection schemes to identify this phase rely either on spin transport properties, which are quite difficult to measure, or on local charge transport, which allows only a partial identification. Here we show that the presence of helical Majorana modes can be unambiguously revealed by measuring the nonlocal charge conductance. Focusing on a superconducting ring, we suggest two experiments that provide unique and robust signatures to detect the helical superconductor phase.
We experimentally investigate electron transport through the interface between a superconductor and the edge of a two-dimensional electron system with band inversion. The interface is realized as a tunnel NbN side contact to a narrow 8~nm HgTe quantum well. It demonstrates a typical Andreev behavior with finite conductance within the superconducting gap. Surprisingly, the conductance is modulated by a number of equally-spaced oscillations. The oscillations are present only within the superconducting gap and at lowest, below 1~K, temperatures. The oscillations disappear completely in magnetic f…
Nonlocal currents, in devices where two normal metal terminals are contacted to a superconductor, are determined using the circuit theory of mesoscopic superconductivity. We calculate the conductance associated with crossed Andreev reflection and electron transfer between the two normal metal terminals, in addition to the conductance from direct Andreev reflection and quasiparticle tunneling. Dephasing and proximity effect are taken into account.
Helical edge states exist in the mixed spin-singlet and -triplet phase of a noncentrosymmetric superconductor (NCSS) when the pair amplitude (PA) in the negative helicity band, $Δ_-$, is smaller than the PA in the positive helicity band, $Δ_+$, i.e., when the PA in the triplet component is more than the same in the singlet component. We numerically determine energies of these edge states as a function of $γ= Δ_-/Δ_+$. The presence of these edge states is reflected in the tunneling process from a normal metal to an NCSS across a bias energy $eV$: (i) Angle resolved spin conductance (SC) obeying…
Two-terminal conductance spectroscopy of superconducting devices is a common tool for probing Andreev and Majorana bound states. Here, we study theoretically a three-terminal setup, with two normal leads coupled to a grounded superconducting terminal. Using a single-electron scattering matrix, we derive the subgap conductance matrix for the normal leads and discuss its symmetries. In particular, we show that the local and the nonlocal elements of the conductance matrix have pairwise identical antisymmetric components. Moreover, we find that the nonlocal elements are directly related to the loc…
Helical edge states exist in the mixed spin-singlet and spin-triplet phase of a noncentrosymmetric (NCS) superconductor. In this article we have considered a planar ferromagnetic metal/NCS superconductor tunnel junction and have studied the effect of these helical edge states which manifests itself through the charge and spin tunneling conductance across the junction. We have shown the behavior of conductances for the entire range of variation of $γ= Δ_-/Δ_+$ where $Δ_\pm$ are the order parameters in the positive and negative helicity bands of the NCS superconductor. There exists a competition …
Chiral $p$-wave superconductor is the primary example of topological systems hosting chiral Majorana edge states. Although candidate materials exist, the conclusive signature of chiral Majorana edge states has not yet been observed in experiments. Here we propose a smoking-gun experiment to detect the chiral Majorana edge states on the basis of theoretical results for the nonlocal conductance in a device consisting of a chiral $p$-wave superconductor and two ferromagnetic leads. The chiral nature of Majorana edge states causes an anomalously long-range and chirality-sensitive nonlocal transpor…
The charge character of Andreev bound states (ABSs) in a three-terminal semiconductor-superconductor hybrid nanowire was measured using local and nonlocal tunneling spectroscopy. The device is fabricated using an epitaxial InAs/Al two-dimensional heterostructure with several gate-defined side probes. ABSs are found to oscillate around zero as a function of gate voltage, with modifications of their charge consistent with theoretical expectations for the total Bardeen-Cooper- Schrieffer (BCS) charge of ABSs.
Nonlocal quasiparticle transport in normal-superconductor-normal (NSN) hybrid structures probes sub-gap states in the proximity region and is especially attractive in the context of Majorana research. Conductance measurement provides only partial information about nonlocal response composed from both electron-like and hole-like quasiparticle excitations. In this work, we show how a nonlocal shot noise measurement delivers a missing puzzle piece in NSN InAs nanowire-based devices. We demonstrate that in a trivial superconducting phase quasiparticle response is practically charge-neutral, domina…
We discuss electric transport through a point contact which bridges Majorana fermion modes appearing at edges of two helical superconductors. The contents focus on effects of interference and interaction unique to the Majorana fermions and role of spin-orbit interaction (SOI). Besides the Josephson current, the quasi-particle conductance depends sensitively on phase difference and relative helicity between the two superconductors. The interaction among the Majorana fermions causes the power-law temperature dependences of conductance for various tunneling channels. Especially, in the presence o…
A two-dimensional time-reversal symmetric topological superconductor is a fully gapped system possessing a helical Majorana mode on the edges. This helical Majorana edge mode (HMEM), which is a Kramer's pair of two chiral Majorana edge modes in the opposite propagating directions, is robust under time-reversal symmetry protection. We propose a feasible setup and accessible measurement to provide the preliminary step of the HMEM realization by studying superconducting antiferromagnetic quantum spin Hall insulators. Since this antiferromagnetic topological insulator hosts a helical electron edge…
In our previous work, high-temperature superconductivity (HTSC) was probed for the first time by using electrical differential conductance Gdiff(V) = dI/dV data as obtained from current-voltage V(I) measurements on a hydrogenated graphitic fiber [1]. While our nonlocal method for finding the superconducting (SC) gap was recently applied to a conventional SC (Pb [2]), the nonlocal Gdiff method was first proposed in [1]. Herein, we are bringing forth an update on the topic.
We report on an experimental and theoretical study of nonlocal transport in superconductor hybrid structures, where two normal-metal leads are attached to a central superconducting wire. As a function of voltage bias applied to both normal-metal electrodes, we find surprisingly large nonlocal conductance signals, almost of the same magnitude as the local conductance. We demonstrate that these signals are the result of strong heating of the superconducting wire, and that under symmetric bias conditions, heating mimics the effect of Cooper pair splitting.
In a setup where two ferromagnetic electrodes are attached to a superconductor, Andreev bound states are induced at both ferromagnet/superconductor (FM/SC) interfaces. We study how these states propagate through the SC and interact with each other. As a result of this interaction, the energetic positions of the Andreev states are not anymore determined solely by the magnetic properties of a single interface, but also depend on the interface distance and the relative magnetization orientation of the FM contacts. We discuss how these bound states show up as distinct peaks in the nonlocal conduct…
By calculating the differential tunneling conductance spectra from the two ends of a Majorana nanowire with a quantum dot embedded at one end, we establish that a careful examination of the nonlocal correlations of the zero bias conductance peaks, as measured separately from the two ends of the wire, can distinguish between topological Majorana bound states and trivial Andreev bound states. In particular, there will be identical correlated zero bias peaks from both ends for Majorana bound states, and thus the presence of correlated zero bias conductance from the two wire ends could imply the p…
Motivated by recent experiments on nonlocal transport through multiterminal superconducting hybrid structures, we present self-consistent calculations based on quasiclassical Green's functions for the order parameter, currents and voltages in a system consisting of a diffusive superconductor connected to two normal and one superconducting electrodes. We investigate non-equilibrium effects for different biasing conditions corresponding to measurements of the nonlocal conductance and of the nonlocal resistance. It is shown that while the nonlocal conductance does not change its sign, this change…
Each end of a Kitaev chain in topological phase hosts a Majorana fermion. Zero bias conductance peak is an evidence of Majorana fermion when the two Majorana fermions are decoupled. These two Majorana fermions are separated in space and this nonlocal aspect can be probed when the two are coupled. Crossed Andreev reflection is the evidence of the nonlocality of Majorana fermions. Nonlocality of Majorana fermions has been proposed to be probed by noise measurements since simple conductance measurements cannot probe it due to the almost cancellation of currents from electron tunneling and crossed…
Experimental evidence of novel phenomena in hydrogenated graphite fibers is found. An indirect excitonic mechanism is likely leading to a SC state below the temperature Tc = 50 K, where the gap is divergent. Analysis of the gap within the framework provided by the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory of superconductivity shows that this is a multigap system. The energy gap data can be better explained within the framework of topologically protected flat bands applied to systems in which superconductivity occurs on the surface or at the internal interfaces of the samples. The temperature depe…
The Andreev conductance across 2d normal metal (N)/superconductor (SC) junctions with relativistic Dirac spectrum is investigated theoretically in the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk formalism. It is shown that for relativistic materials, due to the Klein tunneling instead of impurity potentials, the local strain in the junction is the key factor that determines the transparency of the junction. The local strain is shown to generate an effective Dirac $δ$-gauge field. A remarkable suppression of the conductance are observed as the strength of the gauge field increases. The behaviors of the conductanc…
An SNN-junction in which the superconducting potential is a mixture between s-wave and p-wave potentials is investigated using the Usadel equation equipped with Tanaka-Nazarov boundary conditions. The article provides several ways to distinguish between s + chiral and s + helical p-wave superconductors and a way to determine whether a superconductor has a mixed pair potential. Thus, it is of great importance in the determination of the pair potential of superconductors. It is shown that the different spin sectors satisfy independent equations and can thus be calculated separately even if the d…
It is shown that the spin-orbit and Zeeman interactions result in phase shifts of Andreev-reflected holes in disordered topological insulator, or normal Rashba spin-orbit-coupled wires, which are in a contact with an s-wave superconductor. Due to interference of the holes reflected through different paths in Andreev interferometer the electric current through the contact varies depending on the strength and direction of the Zeeman field. It also depends on mutual orientations of Zeeman fields in different shoulders of the interferometer. Such a nonlocal effect is a result of the long-range coh…
We explore the tunneling transport properties of a quantum dot embedded in an optical microcavity and coupled to a semiconductor-superconductor one-dimensional nanowire (Majorana nanowire) hosting Majorana zero modes (MZMs) at their edges. Conductance profiles reveal that strong light-matter coupling can be employed to distinguish between the cases of highly nonlocal MZMs, overlapped MZMs and MZMs with less degree of nonlocal feature. Moreover, we show that it is possible to access the degree of Majorana nonlocality (topological quality factor) by changing the dot spectrum through photon-induc…
We study the conductance afforded by a normal-metal probe which is directly contacting the helical edge modes of a quantum spin Hall insulator (QSHI). We show a $2e^2/h$ conductance peak at zero temperature in QSHI-based superconductor--ferromagnet hybrids due to the formation of a single Majorana bound state (MBS). In a corresponding Josephson junction hosting a pair of MBSs, a $4e^2/h$ conductance peak is found at zero temperature. The conductance quantization is robust to changes of the relevant system parameters and, remarkably, remains unaltered with increasing the distance between probe …
Non-centrosymmetric superconductors exhibit the magnetoelectric effect which manifests itself in the appearance of the magnetic spin polarization in response to a dissipationless electric current (supercurrent). While much attention has been dedicated to the thermodynamic version of this phenomenon (Edelstein effect), non-equilibrium transport magnetoelectric effects have not been explored yet. We propose the magnetoelectric Andreev effect (MAE) which consists in the generation of spin-polarized triplet Andreev conductance by an electric supercurrent. The MAE stems from the spin polarization o…
Motivated by recent proposals to realize Majorana bound states in chains and arrays of magnetic atoms deposited on top of a superconductor, we study the topological properties of various chain structures, ladders and two-dimensional arrangements exhibiting magnetic helices. We show that magnetic domain walls where the chirality of a magnetic helix is inverted support two protected Majorana states giving rise to a tunneling conductance peak twice the height of a single Majorana state. The topological properties of coupled chains exhibit nontrivial behaviour as a function of the number of chains…
Unlike the more common local conductance spectroscopy, nonlocal conductance can differentiate between nontopological zero-energy modes localized around inhomogeneities, and true Majorana edge modes in the topological phase. In particular, negative nonlocal conductance is dominated by the crossed Andreev reflection. In graphene, the Andreev reflection and the inter-band Klein tunneling couple electron-like and hole-like states through the action of either a superconducting (SC) pair potential or an electrostatic potential. We are here probing quantum phenomena in modified graphitic samples. Fou…
The thermoelectric performance of a topological Josephson nonlocal heat engine is thoroughly investigated. The nonlocal response is obtained by using a normal metal probe coupled with only one of the proximized helical edges in the middle of the junction. In this configuration, we investigate how the flux bias and the phase bias trigger the nonlocal thermoelectric effects under the application of a thermal difference between the superconducting terminals. Possible experimental nonidealities such as asymmetric proximized superconducting gaps are considered showing how the nonlocal response can …
We study discrete symmetries satisfied by helical $p$-wave superconductors with d-vectors $k_{x}\hat{x}\pm k_{y}\hat{y}$ or $k_{y}\hat{x}\pm k_{x}\hat{y}$ and transformations brought by the symmetry operations to ferromagnet and spin-singlet superconductors, which show intimate associations with transport properties in heterojunctions including helical superconductor. Especially, the partial symmetries of the Hamiltonian under the spin-rotation and gauge-rotation operations are responsible for novel invariances of the conductance in tunnel junctions and new selection rules of the lowest curren…
Surface states of topological noncentrosymmetric superconductors exhibit intricate helical spin textures, i.e., the spin orientation of the surface quasiparticles is coupled to their momentum. Using quasiclassical theory, we study the spin polarization of the surface states as a function of the spin-orbit interaction and superconducting pairing symmetry. We focus on two- and three-dimensional fully gapped and nodal noncentrosymmetric superconductors. For the case of nodal systems, we show that the spin polarization of the topological flat bands is controlled by the spin polarization of the bul…
We develop a theory of the tunneling spectroscopy for superconducting topological insulators (STIs), where the surface Andreev bound states (SABSs) appear as helical Majorana fermions. Based on the symmetry and topological nature of parent topological insulators, we find that the SABSs in the STIs have a profound structural transition in the energy dispersions. The transition results in a variety of Majorana fermions, by tuning the chemical potential and the effective mass of the energy band. We clarify that Majorana fermions in the vicinity of the transitions give rise to robust zero bias pea…
Tunneling spectroscopy at surfaces of unconventional superconductors has proven an invaluable tool for obtaining information about the pairing symmetry. It is known that mid gap Andreev bound states manifest itself as a zero bias conductance peak in tunneling spectroscopy. The zero bias conductance peak is a signature for a non-trivial pair potential that exhibits different signs on different regions of the Fermi surface. Here, we review recent theoretical results on the spectrum of Andreev bound states near interfaces and surfaces in non-centrosymmetric superconductors. We introduce a theoret…
Despite much effort for over the two decades, the paring symmetry of a Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ superconductor has been still unclear. In this Rapid Communication, motivated by the recent rapid progress in fabrication techniques for Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ thin-films, we propose a promising strategy for identifying the spin-triplet superconductivity in the thin-film geometry by employing an antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling potential and a Zeeman potential due to an external magnetic field. We demonstrate that a spin-triplet superconducting thin-film undergoes a phase transition from a helical state to a chiral st…
Topological superconductors give rise to unconventional superconductivity, which is mainly characterized by the symmetry of the superconducting pairing amplitude. However, since the symmetry of the superconducting pairing amplitude is not directly observable, its experimental identification is rather difficult. In our work, we propose a system, composed of a quantum point contact and proximity induced s-wave superconductivity at the helical edge of a two dimensional topological insulator, for which we demonstrate the presence of odd-frequency pairing and its intimate connection to unambiguous …
