We study the asymptotics of the natural $L^2$ metric on the Hitchin moduli space with group $G = \mathrm{SU}(2)$. Our main result, which addresses a detailed conjectural picture made by Gaiotto, Neitzke and Moore \cite{gmn13}, is that on the regular part of the Hitchin system, this metric is well-approximated by the semiflat metric from \cite{gmn13}. We prove that the asymptotic rate of convergence for gauged tangent vectors to the moduli space has a precise polynomial expansion, and hence that the the difference between the two sets of metric coefficients in a certain natural coordinate system also has polynomial decay. Very recent work by Dumas and Neitzke indicates that the convergence rate for the metric is exponential, at least in certain directions.
We survey some recent developments in the asymptotic geometry of the Hitchin moduli space, starting with an introduction to the Hitchin moduli space and hyperkähler geometry.
We consider Hitchin's hyperkähler metric $g_{L^2}$ on the $SU(n)$-Hitchin moduli space moduli space over a compact Riemann surface. We prove that the difference between the metric $g_{L^2}$ and a simpler "semiflat" hyperkähler metric $g_{\mathrm{sf}}$ is exponentially-decaying along generic rays in the Hitchin moduli space, as conjectured by Gaiotto-Moore-Neitzke.
We consider Hitchin's hyperkähler metric $g$ on the moduli space $\mathcal{M}$ of degree zero $\mathrm{SL}(2)$-Higgs bundles over a compact Riemann surface. It has been conjectured that, when one goes to infinity along a generic ray in $\mathcal{M}$, $g$ converges to an explicit "semiflat" metric $g^{\mathrm{sf}}$, with an exponential rate of convergence. We show that this is indeed the case for the restriction of $g$ to the tangent bundle of the Hitchin section $\mathcal{B} \subset \mathcal{M}$.
We explore extensions to $\operatorname{SL}(n,\mathbb{C})$-Chern-Simons theory of some results obtained for $\operatorname{SU}(n)$-Chern-Simons theory via the asymptotic properties of the Hitchin connection and its relation to Toeplitz operators developed previously by the first named author. We define a formal Hitchin-Witten connection for the imaginary part $s$ of the quantum parameter $t = k+is$ and investigate the existence of a formal trivialisation. After reducing the problem to a recursive system of differential equations, we identify a cohomological obstruction to the existence of a so…
We investigate the special Kähler geometry of the base of the Hitchin integrable system in terms of spectral curves and topological recursion. The Taylor expansion of the special Kähler metric about any point in the base may be computed by integrating the $g = 0$ Eynard-Orantin invariants of the corresponding spectral curve over cycles. In particular, we show that the Donagi-Markman cubic is computed by the invariant $W^{(0)}_3$. We use topological recursion to go one step beyond this and compute the symmetric quartic of second derivatives of the period matrix.
In this article, we investigate the geometry of $4$-dimensional compact gradient Ricci solitons. We prove that, under an upper bound condition on the range of the potential function, a $4$-dimensional compact gradient Ricci soliton must satisfy the classical Hitchin-Thorpe inequality. In addition, some volume estimates are also obtained.
Let $X$ be a compact Riemann surface. Let $(E,θ)$ be a stable Higgs bundle of degree $0$ on $X$. Let $h_{\det(E)}$ denote a flat metric of the determinant bundle $\det(E)$. For any $t>0$, there exists a unique harmonic metric $h_t$ of $(E,θ)$ such that $\det(h_t)=h_{\det(E)}$. We prove that if the Higgs bundle is induced by a line bundle on the normalization of the spectral curve, then the sequence $h_t$ is convergent to the naturally defined decoupled harmonic metric at the speed of the exponential order. We also obtain a uniform convergence for such a family of Higgs bundles.
We obtain $D_k$ ALF gravitational instantons by a gluing construction which captures, in a precise and explicit fashion, their interpretation as non-linear superpositions of the moduli space of centred $SU(2)$ monopoles, equipped with the Atiyah-Hitchin metric, and $k$ copies of the Taub-NUT manifold. The construction proceeds from a finite set of points in euclidean space, reflection symmetric about the origin, and depends on an adiabatic parameter which is incorporated into the geometry as a fifth dimension. Using a formulation in terms of hyperKähler triples on manifolds with boundaries, we…
In this note, we study submanifold geometry of the Atiyah-Hitchin manifold, the double cover of the $2$-monopole moduli space. When the manifold is naturally identified as the total space of a line bundle over $S^2$, the zero section is a distinguished minimal $2$-sphere of considerable interest. In particular, there has been a conjecture by Micallef and Wolfson [Math. Ann. 295 (1993), Remark on p.262] about the uniqueness of this minimal $2$-sphere among all closed minimal $2$-surfaces. We show that this minimal $2$-sphere satisfies the "strong stability condition" proposed in our earlier wor…
We introduce para-complex and pseudo-Riemannian geometric methods for the study of representations of surface groups in $\mathrm{SL}(2m+1,\mathbb{R})$. For $m=1$ our techniques allow to recover several known results for Hitchin representations without any reference to convex projective geometry or hyperbolic affine spheres. In particular, we describe analytically the Guichard-Wienhard domain of discontinuity in the flag variety and the corresponding concave foliated flag structure of Nolte-Riestenberg. In higher rank, we obtain a one-to-one correspondence between stable cyclic $\mathrm{SL}(2m+…
Given a generic ray of Higgs bundles $(\overline{\partial}_E, tφ)$, we describe the corresponding family of hermitian metrics $h_t$ solving Hitchin's equations via gluing methods. In the process, we construct a family of approximate solutions $h_t^{\mathrm{app}}$ which differ from the actual harmonic metrics $h_t$ by error terms of size $\mathrm{e}^{-δt}$. Such families of explicit approximate solutions have already proved useful for answering finer questions about the asymptotic geometry of the Hitchin moduli space.

We describe the geometry of generic heterotic backgrounds preserving minimal supersymmetry in four dimensions using the language of generalised geometry. They are characterised by an $SU(3)\times Spin(6+n)$ structure within $O(6,6+n)\times\mathbb{R}^+$ generalised geometry. Supersymmetry of the background is encoded in the existence of an involutive subbundle of the generalised tangent bundle and the vanishing of a moment map for the action of diffeomorphisms and gauge symmetries. We give both the superpotential and the Kähler potential for a generic background, showing that the latter defines…
We give a characterisation of Atiyah's and Hitchin's transverse Hilbert schemes of points on a symplectic surface in terms of bi-Poisson structures. Furthermore, we describe the geometry of hyperkähler manifolds arising from the transverse Hilbert scheme construction, with particular attention paid to the monopole moduli spaces.
Motivated by generalized geometry (à la Hitchin), we discuss the integrability conditions for four natural almost complex structures on the product bundle ${\mathcal Z}\times {\mathcal Z}\to M$, where ${\mathcal Z}$ is the twistor space of a Riemannian 4-manifold $M$ endowed with a metric connection $D$ with skew-symmetric torsion. These structures are defined by means of the connection $D$ and four (Kähler) complex structures on the fibres of this bundle. Their integrability conditions are interpreted in terms of Weyl geometry and this is used to supply examples satisfying the conditions.
Let $(E,\overline{\partial}_E,θ)$ be a stable Higgs bundle of degree $0$ on a compact connected Riemann surface. Once we fix the flat metric $h_{\det(E)}$ on the determinant of $E$, we have the harmonic metrics $h_t$ $(t>0)$ for the stable Higgs bundles $(E,\overline{\partial}_E,tθ)$ such that $\det(h_t)=h_{\det(E)}$. We study the behaviour of $h_t$ when $t$ goes to $\infty$. First, we show that the Hitchin equation is asymptotically decoupled under the assumption that the Higgs field is generically regular semisimple. We apply it to the study of the so called Hitchin WKB-problem. Second, we s…
Let $X$ be a compact connected Riemann surface and $D$ an effective divisor on $X$. Let ${\mathcal N}_H(r,d)$ denote the moduli space of $D$-twisted stable Higgs bundles (a special class of Hitchin pairs) on $X$ of rank $r$ and degree $d$. It is known that ${\mathcal N}_H(r,d)$ has a natural holomorphic Poisson structure which is in fact symplectic if and only if $D$ is the zero divisor. We prove that ${\mathcal N}_H(r,d)$ admits a natural enhancement to a holomorphic symplectic manifold which is called here ${\mathcal M}_H(r,d)$. This ${\mathcal M}_H(r,d)$ is constructed by trivializing, over…
We analyse the geometry of generic Minkowski $\mathcal{N}=1$, $D=4$ flux compactifications in string theory, the default backgrounds for string model building. In M-theory they are the natural string theoretic extensions of $\mathrm{G}_2$ holonomy manifolds. In type II theories, they extend the notion of Calabi--Yau geometry and include the class of flux backgrounds based on generalised complex structures first considered by Graña et al. (GMPT). Using $\mathrm{E}_{7(7)}\times\mathbb{R}^+$ generalised geometry we show that these compactifications are characterised by an $\mathrm{SU}(7)\subset\m…
Mid-dimensional $(A,B,A)$ and $(B,B,B)$-branes in the moduli space of flat $G_{\mathbb C}$-connections appearing from finite group actions on compact Riemann surfaces are studied. The geometry and topology of these spaces is then described via the corresponding Higgs bundles and Hitchin fibrations.
The twistor construction for Riemannian manifolds is extended to the case of manifolds endowed with generalized metrics (in the sense of generalized geometry à la Hitchin). The generalized twistor space associated to such a manifold is defined as the bundle of generalized complex structures on the tangent spaces of the manifold compatible with the given generalized metric. This space admits natural generalized almost complex structures whose integrability conditions are found in the paper. An interesting feature of the generalized twistor spaces discussed in it is the existence of intrinsic is…
