We consider the ferromagnetic Ising model on the Cayley tree and we investigate the decomposition of the free state into extremal states below the spin glass temperature. We show that this decomposition has uncountably many components. The tail observable showing that the free state is not extremal is related to the Edwards-Anderson parameter, measuring the variance of the (random) magnetization obtained from drawing boundary conditions from the free state.
Using Monte Carlo simulations we show that the three-dimensional Ising model with four-spin (plaquette) interactions has some characteristic glassy features. The model dynamically generates diverging energy barriers, which give rise to slow dynamics at low temperature. Moreover, in a certain temperature range the model possesses a metastable (supercooled liquid) phase, which is presumably supported by certain entropy barriers. Although extremely strong, metastability in our model is only a finite-size effect and sufficiently large droplets of stable phase divert evolution of the system toward …
Recent numerical simulations indicate that several different equilibrium glass transitions may be characterized by diverging correlation lengths, and that these divergences are described by a non-mean-field, Ising-like, critical exponent. I argue here that a minimal model of polydisperse, hard-core particles can be reformulated in terms of Ising spins. The two spin states correspond, at high pressure, to two compact, local topologies -- "solidlike" and "liquidlike" -- whose average volumes per particle are nearly identical for strongly frustrated, glass forming systems. The critical correlatio…
We consider the random field Ising model and show rigorously that the spin glass susceptibility at equilibrium is always bounded by the ferromagnetic susceptibility, and therefore that no spin glass phase can be present at equilibrium out of the ferromagnet critical line. When the magnetization is, however, fixed to values smaller than the equilibrium one, a glassy phase can exist, as we show explicitly on the Bethe lattice.
The field-cooled magnetization (FCM) processes of Ising spin glasses under relatively small fields are investigated by experiment on Fe_{0.55}Mn_{0.45}TiO_3 and by numerical simulation on the three-dimensional Edwards-Anderson model. Both results are explained in a unified manner by means of the droplet picture. In particular, the cusp-like behavior of the FCM is interpreted as evidence, not for an equilibrium phase transition under a finite magnetic field, but for a dynamical (`blocking') transition frequently observed in glassy systems.
The emergence of glassy behavior of the random field Ising model (RFIM) is investigated using an extended mean-field theory approach. Using this formulation, systematic corrections to the standard Bragg-Williams theory can be incorporated, leading to the appearance of a glassy phase, in agreement with the results of the self-consistent screening theory of Mezard and Young. Our approach makes it also possible to obtain information about the low temperature behavior of this glassy phase. We present results showing that within our mean-field framework, the hysteresis and avalanche behavior of the…
Here is the first part of the summary of my work on random Ising model using real-space renormalization group (RSRG), also known as a Migdal-Kadanoff one. This approximate renormalization scheme was applied to the analysis thermodynamic properties of the model, and of probabilistic properties of a pair correlator, which is a fluctuating object in disordered systems. We investigate the zero-temperature glassy transitions in the square-lattice +- J Ising model, with bond distribution $P(J_{xy}) = p δ(J_{xy} - J) + (1-p) δ(J_{xy} + J)$; p=1 and p=1/2 correspond to the pure Ising model and to the Ising spin glass with symmetric bimodal distribution, respectively. We present finite-temperature Monte Carlo simulations at p=4/5, which is close to the low-temperature paramagnetic-ferromagnetic transition line located at p=0.89, and at p=1/2. Their comparison provides a strong evidence that the glassy critical behavior that occurs for $1-p_0<p<p_0$, $p_0=0.897$, i…
We investigate the ferromagnetic-glassy transitions which separate the low-temperature ferromagnetic and spin-glass phases in the temperature-disorder phase diagram of three-dimensional Ising spin-glass models. For this purpose, we consider the cubic-lattice +-J (Edwards-Anderson) Ising model with bond distribution $P(J) = p δ(J - 1) + (1-p) δ(J + 1)$, and present a numerical Monte Carlo study of the critical behavior along the line that marks the onset of ferromagnetism. The finite-size scaling analysis of the Monte Carlo data shows that the ferromagnetic-glassy transition line is slightly re…
The field-cooled (FC) process on an Ising spin-glass model is investigated by a standard Monte Calro (MC) method on one hand, and the equilibrium magnetization of the same system is evaluated by the exchang MC method on the other hand. The two types of simulation reveal intriguing glassy (nonequilibrium) dynamic properties of the FC magnetization (FCM) of the system. Particularly, the FCM decrease is observed when the FC process is halted at a low temperater, although its value is smaller than the corresponding equilibrium value. We present a comprehensive interpretation of such peculiar pheno…
We consider the critical properties of points of continuous glass transition as one can find in liquids in presence of constraints or in liquids in porous media. Through a one loop analysis we show that the critical Replica Field Theory describing these points can be mapped in the $ϕ^4$-Random Field Ising Model. We confirm our analysis studying the finite size scaling of the $p$-spin model defined on sparse random graph, where a fraction of variables is frozen such that the phase transition is of a continuous kind.
A method is presented for measuring the integrated response in Ising spin system without applying any perturbing field. Large-scale simulations are performed in order to show how the method works. Very precise measurements of the fluctuation-dissipation ratio are presented for 3 different Ising models: the 2-dimensional ferromagnetic model, the mean-field diluted 3-spin model, and the 3-dimensional Edwards-Anderson model.
We investigate the replica symmetry broken (RSB) phase of spin glass (SG) models in a random field defined on Bethe lattices at zero temperature. From the properties of the RSB solution we deduce a closed equation for the extreme values of the cavity fields. This equation turns out not to depend on the parameters defining the RSB, and it predicts that the spontaneous RSB does not take place homogeneously on the whole system. Indeed, there exist spins having the same effective local field in all local ground states, exactly as in the replica symmetric (RS) phase, while the spontaneous RSB manif…
The ferromagnetic Ising spins are modeled on a recursive lattice constructed from random-angled rhombus units with stochastic configurations, to study the magnetic properties of the bulk Fe-based metallic glass. The integration of spins on the structural glass model well represents the magnetic moments in the glassy metal. The model is exactly solved by the recursive calculation technique. The magnetization of the amorphous Ising spins, i.e. the glassy metallic magnet is investigated by our modeling and calculation on a theoretical base. The results show that the glassy metallic magnets has a …
We present exact results for the critical behavior of the RFIM on complete graphs and trees, both at equilibrium and away from equilibrium, i.e., models for hysteresis and Barkhausen noise. We show that for stretched exponential and power law distributions of random fields the behavior on complete graphs is non-universal, while the behavior on Cayley trees is universal even in the limit of large co-ordination.
We consider the ferromagnetic Ising model with spatially dependent external fields on a Cayley tree, and we investigate the conditions for the existence of the phase transition for a class of external fields, asymptotically approaching a homogeneous critical external field. Our results extend earlier results by Rozikov and Ganikhodjaev.
It is found that the zero field susceptibility chi of the Ising model on the Cayley tree exhibits unusually weak divergence at the critical point Tc. The susceptibility amplitude is found to diverge at Tc proportionally to the tree generation level n, while the behavior of chi is otherwise analytic in the vicinity of Tc, with the critical exponent gamma=0.
Motivated by a recent use of Glauber dynamics for Monte-Carlo simulations of path integral representation of quantum spin models [Krzakala, Rosso, Semerjian, and Zamponi, Phys. Rev. B (2008)], we analyse a natural Glauber dynamics for the quantum Ising model with a transverse field on a finite graph $G$. We establish strict monotonicity properties of the equilibrium distribution and we extend (and improve) the censoring inequality of Peres and Winkler to the quantum setting. Then we consider the case when $G$ is a regular $b$-ary tree and prove the same fast mixing results established in [Mart…
In this present paper, the recurrence equations of an Ising model with three coupling constants on a third-order Cayley tree are obtained. Paramagnetic and ferromagnetic phases associated with the Ising model are characterized. Types of phases and partition functions corresponding to the model are rigorously studied. Exact solutions of the mentioned model are compared with the numerical results given in Ganikhodjaev et al. [J. Concr. Appl. Math., 2011, 9, No. 1, 26-34].
In this paper we analytically study the recurrence equations of an Ising model with three competing interactions on a Cayley tree of order three. We exactly describe paramagnetic and ferromagnetic phases of the Ising model. We obtain some rigorous results: critical temperatures and curves, number of phases, partition function. Ganikhodjaev et al. [J. Concrete and Applicable Mathematics, 9 (1), 26-34 (2011)] have numerically studied the Ising model on a second-order Cayley tree. We compare the numerical results to exact solutions of mentioned model.
We provide strong evidence that the effective spin-spin interaction in a multimodal confocal optical cavity gives rise to a self-induced glassy phase, which emerges exclusively from the peculiar euclidean correlations and is not related to the presence of disorder as in standard spin glasses. As recently shown, this spin-spin effective interaction is both non-local and non-translational invariant, and randomness in the atoms positions produces a spin glass phase. Here we consider the simplest feasible disorder-free setting where atoms form a one-dimensional regular chain and we study the therm…
While the Ising model on the Cayley tree has no spontaneous magnetization at nonzero temperatures in the thermodynamic limit, we show that finite systems of astronomical sizes remain magnetically ordered in a wide temperature range, if the symmetry is broken by fixing an arbitrary single (bulk or surface) spin. We compare the behavior of the finite size magnetization of this model with that of the Ising model on both the Sierpinski Gasket, and the one-dimensional linear chain. This comparison reveals the analogy of the behavior of the present model with the Sierpinski Gasket case.
An exact analytical derivation is presented, showing that the Ising model on the Cayley tree exhibits a line of third order phase transition points, between temperatures $T_2=2k_B^{-1}J\ln ({\sqrt 2}+1) $ and $T_{BP}=k_B^{-1}J\ln (3)$, and a line of fourth order phase transitions between $T_{BP}$ and $\infty$, where $k_B$ is the Boltzmann constant, and $J$ is the nearest-neighbor interaction parameter.
We study the critical behavior of the ferromagnetic Ising model on random trees as well as so-called locally tree-like random graphs. We pay special attention to trees and graphs with a power-law offspring or degree distribution whose tail behavior is characterized by its power-law exponent $τ>2$. We show that the critical temperature of the Ising model equals the inverse hyperbolic tangent of the inverse of the mean offspring or mean forward degree distribution. In particular, the inverse critical temperature equals zero when $τ\in(2,3]$ where this mean equals infinity. We further study the c…
We consider ferromagnetic Ising models on graphs that converge locally to trees. Examples include random regular graphs with bounded degree and uniformly random graphs with bounded average degree. We prove that the "cavity" prediction for the limiting free energy per spin is correct for any positive temperature and external field. Further, local marginals can be approximated by iterating a set of mean field (cavity) equations. Both results are achieved by proving the local convergence of the Boltzmann distribution on the original graph to the Boltzmann distribution on the appropriate infinite …
We analyze the ferromagnetic Ising model on a scale-free tree; the growing random network model with the linear attachment kernel $A_k=k+α$ introduced by [Krapivsky et al.: Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 85} (2000) 4629-4632]. We derive an estimate of the divergent temperature $T_s$ below which the zero-field susceptibility of the system diverges. Our result shows that $T_s$ is related to $α$ as $\tanh(J/T_s)=α/[2(α+1)]$, where $J$ is the ferromagnetic interaction. An analysis of exactly solvable limit for the model and numerical calculation support the validity of this estimate.
We give a generalization to an infinite tree geometry of Vidal's infinite time-evolving block decimation (iTEBD) algorithm for simulating an infinite line of quantum spins. We numerically investigate the quantum Ising model in a transverse field on the Bethe lattice using the Matrix Product State ansatz. We observe a second order phase transition, with certain key differences from the transverse field Ising model on an infinite spin chain. We also investigate a transverse field Ising model with a specific longitudinal field. When the transverse field is turned off, this model has a highly dege…
Some results on the two-point function and on the analytic structure of the momenta of the effective fugacity at the origin for a class of diluted ferromagnetic Ising models on the Cayley tree are presented.
In the present paper, the Ising model with mixed spin-(1,1/2) is considered on the second order Cayley tree. A construction of splitting Gibbs measures corresponding the model is given which allows to establish the existence of the phase transition (non-uniqueness of Gibbs measures). We point out that, in the phase transition region, the considered model has three translation-invariant Gibbs measures in the ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic regimes, while the classical Ising model does not possesses such Gibbs measures in the anti-ferromagnetic regime. It turns out that the considered model…
The Ising model on an infinite generic tree is defined as a thermodynamic limit of finite systems. A detailed description of the corresponding distribution of infinite spin configurations is given. As an application we study the magnetization properties of such systems and prove that they exhibit no spontaneous magnetization. Furthermore, the values of the Hausdorff and spectral dimensions of the underlying trees are calculated and found to be, respectively, $\bar{d}_h=2$ and $\bar{d}_s=4/3$.
An important problem in statistical physics concerns the fascinating connections between partition functions of lattice models studied in equilibrium statistical mechanics on the one hand and graph theoretical enumeration problems on the other hand. We investigate the nature of the relationship between the number of spanning trees and the partition function of the Ising model on the square lattice. The spanning tree generating function $T(z)$ gives the spanning tree constant when evaluated at $z=1$, while giving he lattice green function when differentiated. It is known that for the infinite s…
We introduce Eulerian maps with blocked edges as a general way to implement statistical matter models on random maps by a modification of intrinsic distances. We show how to code these dressed maps by means of mobiles, i.e. decorated trees with labeled vertices, leading to a closed system of recursion relations for their generating functions. We discuss particular solvable cases in detail, as well as various applications of our method to several statistical systems such as spanning trees on quadrangulations, mutually excluding particles on Eulerian triangulations or the Ising model on quadrang…
In this paper and in the companion one we address the problem of identifying the effective theory that describes the statistics of the fluctuations of what is thought to be the relevant order parameter for glassy systems---the overlap field with an equilibrium reference configuration---close to the putative thermodynamic glass transition. Our starting point is the mean-field theory of glass formation which relies on the existence of a complex free-energy landscape with a multitude of metastable states. In this paper, we focus on archetypal mean-field models possessing this type of free-energy …
We study three kinetic models with constraint, namely the Symmetrically Constrained Ising Chain, the Asymmetrically Constrained Ising Chain, and the Backgammon Model. All these models show glassy behavior and coarsening. We apply to them the Stillinger and Weber decomposition, and find that they share the same configurational entropy, despite of their different nonequilibrium dynamics. We conclude therefore that the Stillinger and Weber decomposition is not relevant for this type of models.
A hyperbolic plane can be modeled by a structure called the enhanced binary tree. We study the ferromagnetic Ising model on top of the enhanced binary tree using the renormalization-group analysis in combination with transfer-matrix calculations. We find a reasonable agreement with Monte Carlo calculations on the transition point, and the resulting critical exponents suggest the mean-field surface critical behavior.
Generalized Ising models, also known as cluster expansions, are an important tool in many areas of condensed-matter physics and materials science, as they are often used in the study of lattice thermodynamics, solid-solid phase transitions, magnetic and thermal properties of solids, and fluid mechanics. However, the problem of finding the global ground state of generalized Ising model has remained unresolved, with only a limited number of results for simple systems known. We propose a method to efficiently find the periodic ground state of a generalized Ising model of arbitrary complexity by a…
The main aim of the present paper is to prove the existence of a phase transition in quantum Markov chain (QMC) scheme for the Ising type models on a Cayley tree. Note that this kind of models do not have one-dimensional analogous, i.e. the considered model persists only on trees. In this paper, we provide a more general construction of forward QMC. In that construction, a QMC is defined as a weak limit of finite volume states with boundary conditions, i.e. QMC depends on the boundary conditions. Our main result states the existence of a phase transition for the Ising model with competing inte…
We consider an Ising competitive model defined over a triangular Husimi tree where loops, responsible for an explicit frustration, are even allowed. After a critical analysis of the phase diagram, in which a ``gas of non interacting dimers (or spin liquid) - ferro or antiferromagnetic ordered state'' transition is recognized in the frustrated regions, we introduce the disorder for studying the spin glass version of the model: the triangular +/- J model. We find out that, for any finite value of the averaged couplings, the model exhibits always a phase transition, even in the frustrated regions…
The Ising model is an equilibrium stochastic process used as a model in several branches of science including magnetic materials, geophysics, neuroscience, sociology and finance. Real systems of interest have finite size and a fixed coupling matrix exhibiting quenched disorder. Exact methods for the Ising model, however, employ infinite size limits, translational symmetries of lattices and the Cayley tree, or annealed structures as ensembles of networks. Here we show how the Ising partition function can be evaluated exactly by exploiting small tree-width. This structural property is exhibited …
In this paper, we consider Vannimenus model with competing nearest-neighbors and prolonged next-nearest-neighbors interactions on a Cayley tree. For this model we define Markov random fields with memory of length 2. By using a new approach, we obtain new sets of Gibbs measures of Ising-Vannimenus model on Cayley tree of order 2. We construct the recurrence equations corresponding Ising-Vannimenus model. We prove the Kolmogorov consistency condition. We investigate the translation-invariant and periodic non transition-invariant Gibbs measures for the model. We find new sets of Gibbs measures di…

Many iterative and non-iterative methods have been developed for inverse problems associated with Ising models. Aiming to derive an accurate non-iterative method for the inverse problems, we employ the tree-reweighted approximation. Using the tree-reweighted approximation, we can optimize the rigorous lower bound of the objective function. By solving the moment-matching and self-consistency conditions analytically, we can derive the interaction matrix as a function of the given data statistics. With this solution, we can obtain the optimal interaction matrix without iterative computation. To e…
The main purpose of this review paper is to give systematically all the known results on phase diagrams corresponding to lattice models (Ising and Potts) on Cayley tree (or Bethe lattice) and chandelier networks. A detailed survey of various modelling applications of lattice models is reported. By using Vannimenus's approach, the recursive equations of Ising and Potts models associated to a given Hamiltonian on the Cayley tree are presented and analyzed. The corresponding phase diagrams with programming codes in different programming languages are plotted. To detect the phase transitions in th…
We apply the Bethe-Peierls approximation to the problem of the inverse Ising model and show how the linear response relation leads to a simple method to reconstruct couplings and fields of the Ising model. This reconstruction is exact on tree graphs, yet its computational expense is comparable to other mean-field methods. We compare the performance of this method to the independent-pair, naive mean- field, Thouless-Anderson-Palmer approximations, the Sessak-Monasson expansion, and susceptibility propagation in the Cayley tree, SK-model and random graph with fixed connectivity. At low temperatu…
The Ising spin - S model on recursive p - polygonal structures in the external magnetic field is considered and the general form of the free energy and magnetization for arbitrary spin is derived. The exact relation between the free energies on infinite entire tree and on its infinite "interior" is obtained.
