We develop an extension of the fast method of angles for hyperbolicity verification in chaotic systems with an arbitrary number of time-delay feedback loops. The adopted method is based on the theory of covariant Lyapunov vectors and provides an efficient algorithm applicable for systems with high-dimensional phase space. Three particular examples of time-delay systems are analyzed and in all cases the expected hyperbolicity is confirmed.
We develop a numerical test of hyperbolicity of chaotic dynamics in time-delay systems. The test is based on the angle criterion and includes computation of angle distributions between expanding, contracting and neutral manifolds of trajectories on the attractor. Three examples are tested. For two of them previously predicted hyperbolicity is confirmed. The third one provides an example of a time-delay system with nonhyperbolic chaos.
We consider a chain of oscillators with hyperbolic chaos coupled via diffusion. When the coupling is strong the chain is synchronized and demonstrates hyperbolic chaos so that there is one positive Lyapunov exponent. With the decay of the coupling the second and the third Lyapunov exponents approach zero simultaneously. The second one becomes positive, while the third one remains close to zero. Its finite-time numerical approximation fluctuates changing the sign within a wide range of the coupling parameter. These fluctuations arise due to the unstable dimension variability which is known to b…
We apply to bidimensional chaotic maps the numerical method proposed by Ginelli et al. to approximate the associated Oseledets splitting, i.e. the set of linear subspaces spanned by the so called covariant Lyapunov vectors (CLV) and corresponding to the Lyapunov spectrum. These subspaces are the analog of linearized invariant manifolds for non-periodic points, so the angles between them can be used to quantify the degree of hyperbolicity of generic orbits; however, being such splitting non invariant under smooth transformations of phase space, it is interesting to investigate the properties of…
The dynamics of many important high-dimensional dynamical systems are both chaotic and complex, meaning that strong reducing hypotheses are required to understand the dynamics. The highly influential chaotic hypothesis of Gallavotti and Cohen states that the large-scale dynamics of high-dimensional systems are effectively uniformly hyperbolic, which implies many felicitous statistical properties. We obtain direct and reliable numerical evidence, contrary to the chaotic hypothesis, of the existence of non-hyperbolic large-scale dynamical structures in a mean-field coupled system. To do this we …
The scaling behavior of the maximal Lyapunov exponent in chaotic systems with time-delayed feedback is investigated. For large delay times it has been shown that the delay-dependence of the exponent allows a distinction between strong and weak chaos, which are the analogy to strong and weak instability of periodic orbits in a delay system. We find significant differences between scaling of exponents in periodic or chaotic systems. We show that chaotic scaling is related to fluctuations in the linearized equations of motion. A linear delay system including multiplicative noise shows the same pr…
Two identical chaotic oscillators that are mutually coupled via time delayed signals show very complex patterns of completely synchronized dynamics including stationary states and periodic as well as chaotic oscillations. We have experimentally observed these synchronized states in delay-coupled electronic circuits and have analyzed their stability by numerical simulations and analytical calculations. We found that the conditions for longitudinal and transversal stability largely exclude each other and prevent e.g. the synchronization of Pyragas-controlled orbits. Most striking is the observat…
Networks of nonlinear units with time-delayed couplings can synchronize to a common chaotic trajectory. Although the delay time may be very large, the units can synchronize completely without time shift. For networks of coupled Bernoulli maps, analytic results are derived for the stability of the chaotic synchronization manifold. For a single delay time, chaos synchronization is related to the spectral gap of the coupling matrix. For networks with multiple delay times, analytic results are obtained from the theory of polynomials. Finally, the analytic results are compared with networks of iter…
We study the effect of coupling delay in a regular network with a ring topology and in a more complex network with an all-to-all (global) topology in the presence of impurities (disorder). We find that the coupling delay is capable of inducing phase-coherent chaotic oscillations in both types of networks, thereby enhancing the spatiotemporal complexity even in the presence of 50% of symmetric disorders of both fixed and random types. Furthermore, the coupling delay increases the robustness of the networks up to 70% of disorders, thereby preventing the network from acquiring periodic oscillatio…
A novel time delayed chaotic oscillator exhibiting mono- and double scroll complex chaotic attractors is designed. This circuit consists of only a few operational amplifiers and diodes and employs a threshold controller for flexibility. It efficiently implements a piecewise linear function. The control of piecewise linear function facilitates controlling the shape of the attractors. This is demonstrated by constructing the phase portraits of the attractors through numerical simulations and hardware experiments. Based on these studies, we find that this circuit can produce multi-scroll chaotic …
We study chaotic systems with multiple time delays that range over several orders of magnitude. We show that the spectrum of Lyapunov exponents (LE) in such systems possesses a hierarchical structure, with different parts scaling with the different delays. This leads to different types of chaos, depending on the scaling of the maximal LE. Our results are relevant, in particular, for the synchronization properties of hierarchical networks (networks of networks) where the nodes of subnetworks are coupled with shorter delays and couplings between different subnetworks are realized with longer del…
We compute Lyapunov vectors (LVs) corresponding to the largest Lyapunov exponents in delay-differential equations with large time delay. We find that characteristic LVs, and backward (Gram-Schmidt) LVs, exhibit long-range correlations, identical to those already observed in dissipative extended systems. In addition we give numerical and theoretical support to the hypothesis that the main LV belongs, under a suitable transformation, to the universality class of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation. These facts indicate that in the large delay limit (an important class of) delayed equations behave e…
We report the first experimental demonstration of chaotic phase synchronization (CPS) in unidirectionally coupled time-delay systems using electronic circuits. We have also implemented experimentally an efficient methodology for characterizing CPS, namely the localized sets. Snapshots of the evolution of coupled systems and the sets as observed from the oscilloscope confirming CPS are shown experimentally. Numerical results from different approaches, namely phase differences, localized sets, changes in the largest Lyapunov exponents and the correlation of probability of recurrence ($C_{CPR}$),…
We present the first report of the synchronization regimes in both unidirectionally and bidirectionally-coupled multiple time delay chaotic laser diodes subject to incoherent optical feedbacks and incoherent optical injection. We derive the existence conditions and numerically study the stability for lag, complete, and anticipating synchronization regimes and cascaded synchronization. We also study in detail the effect of parameter mismatches and noise on the synchronization quality. It is emphasized that sensitivity of the synchronization quality to parameter mismatches can lead to a high lev…
We consider a typical class of systems with delayed nonlinearity, which we show to exhibit chaotic diffusion. It is demonstrated that a periodic modulation of the time-lag can lead to an enhancement of the diffusion constant by several orders of magnitude. This effect is the largest if the circle map defined by the modulation shows mode locking and more specifically, fulfills the conditions for laminar chaos. Thus we establish for the first time a connection between Arnold tongue structures in parameter space and diffusive properties of a delay system. Counterintuitively, the enhancement of di…
The attractor dimension at the transition to complete synchronization in a network of chaotic units with time-delayed couplings is investigated. In particular, we determine the Kaplan-Yorke dimension from the spectrum of Lyapunov exponents for iterated maps and for two coupled semiconductor lasers. We argue that the Kaplan-Yorke dimension must be discontinuous at the transition and compare it to the correlation dimension. For a system of Bernoulli maps we indeed find a jump in the correlation dimension. The magnitude of the discontinuity in the Kaplan-Yorke dimension is calculated for networks…
Lag synchronization is a basic phenomenon in mismatched coupled systems, delay coupled systems and time-delayed systems. It is characterized by a lag configuration that establishes a unique time shift between all the state variables of the coupled systems. In this report, an attempt is made how to induce multiple lag configurations in coupled systems when different pairs of state variables attain different time shift. A design of coupling is presented to realize this multiple lag synchronization. Numerical illustration is given using examples of the Rössler system and the slow-fast Hindmarsh-R…
We report a design of delay coupling for lag synchronization in two unidirectionally coupled chaotic oscillators. A delay term is introduced in the definition of the coupling to target any desired lag between the driver and the response. The stability of the lag synchronization is ensured by using the Hurwitz matrix stability. We are able to scale up or down the size of a driver attractor at a response system in presence of a lag. This allows compensating the attenuation of the amplitude of a signal during transmission through a delay line. The delay coupling is illustrated with numerical exam…
We present the interplay between synchronization of unidirectional coupled chaotic nodes with heterogeneous delays and the greatest common divisor (GCD) of loops composing the oriented graph. In the weak chaos region and for GCD=1 the network is in chaotic zero-lag synchronization, whereas for GCD=m>1 synchronization of m-sublattices emerges. Complete synchronization can be achieved when all chaotic nodes are influenced by an identical set of delays and in particular for the limiting case of homogeneous delays. Results are supported by simulations of chaotic systems, self-consistent and mixing…
A computationally quick and conceptually simple method to recover time delay of the chaotic system from scalar time series is developed in this paper. We show that the orbits in the incomplete two-dimensional reconstructed phase-space will show local clustering phenomenon after the component permutation procedure proposed in this work. We find that information captured by the incomplete two-dimensional reconstructed phase-space, is related to the time delay ${τ_0}$ present in the system, and will be transferred to the permutation component by the procedure of component permutation. We then pro…
The effective numerical method is developed performing the test of the hyperbolicity of chaotic dynamics. The method employs ideas of algorithms for covariant Lyapunov vectors but avoids their explicit computation. The outcome is a distribution of a characteristic value which is bounded within the unit interval and whose zero indicate the presence of tangency between expanding and contracting subspaces. To perform the test one needs to solve several copies of equations for infinitesimal perturbations whose amount is equal to the sum of numbers of positive and zero Lyapunov exponents. Since for…
Topologies of two, three and four time-delay-coupled chaotic semiconductor lasers are experimentally and theoretically found to show new types of synchronization. Shifted zero-lag synchronization is observed for two lasers separated by long distances even when their self-feedback delays are not equal. Shifted sub-lattice synchronization is observed for quadrilateral geometries while the equilateral triangle is zero-lag synchronized. Generalized zero-lag synchronization, without the limitation of precisely matched delays, opens possibilities for advanced multi-user communication protocols.
We study chaotic synchronization in networks with time-delayed coupling. We introduce the notion of strong and weak chaos, distinguished by the scaling properties of the maximum Lyapunov exponent within the synchronization manifold for large delay times, and relate this to the condition for stable or unstable chaotic synchronization, respectively. In simulations of laser models and experiments with electronic circuits, we identify transitions from weak to strong and back to weak chaos upon monotonically increasing the coupling strength.
We show that the output of systems with time-varying delay can exhibit a new kind of chaotic behavior characterized by laminar phases, which are periodically interrupted by irregular bursts. Within each laminar phase the output intensity remains almost constant, but its level varies chaotically from phase to phase. In scalar systems the periodic dynamics of the lengths and the chaotic dynamics of the intensity levels can be understood and also tuned via two one-dimensional maps, which can be deduced from the nonlinearity of the delay equation and from the delay variation, respectively.
We study the constructive role of noises in a Lorenz system with functional delay. The effect of delay can change the dynamics of the system to a chaotic one from its steady state. Induced synchronization with white and colored (red and green) noises are observed between two identical uncoupled systems and enhancement of synchrony is also observed with unidirectional coupling. We investigate both the phenomena in a globally coupled network in the presence of white and color noises.
In a chain of mutually coupled oscillators, the coupling threshold for synchronization between the outermost identical oscillators decreases when a type of impurity (in terms of parameter mismatch) is introduced in the inner oscillator(s). The outer oscillators interact indirectly via dynamic relaying, mediated by the inner oscillator(s). We confirm this enhancing of critical coupling in the chaotic regimes of Rössler system in absence of coupling delay and in Mackey-Glass system with delay coupling. The enhancing effect is experimentally verified in electronic circuit of Rössler oscillators.
We investigate the chaotic spin-down behavior seen from some pulsars in terms of the nonlinear superfluid dynamics. To this end, we numerically solve the set of equations for the superfluid-normal matter system whose coupling is mediated by creep of the vortex lines. We show that glitch perturbations which introduce a time-delay to the steady-state dynamics leave behind a remnant in the third time derivative of the rotational phase. This time-delay induces a hyper-chaotic spin-down for pulsars. We find that glitch-induced changes in the rotational parameters lead to non-closing cyclic patterns…
We experimentally study a semiconductor laser subject to two optical feedbacks in a free space setup. We show that the time delay signature, manifesting itself in the chaotic output intensity, can be better suppressed than in a laser with single feedback. We demonstrate that the control of the feedback phase is essential to suppress the time delay signature, in contrast to the one-delay case, and that the feedback phase also impacts the chaotic bandwidth. By optimizing the feedback phase the time delay signature can be reduced by a factor of 2 while maintaining a large chaotic bandwidth.
We study two identical FitzHugh-Nagumo oscillators which are coupled with one or two different time delays. If only a single delay coupling is used, the length of the delay determines whether the synchronization manifold is transversally stable or unstable, exhibiting mixed mode or chaotic oscillations in which the small amplitude oscillations are always in-phase but the large amplitude oscillations are in-phase or out-of-phase respectively. For two delays we find an intricate dynamics which comprises an irregular alteration of small amplitude oscillations, in-phase and out-of-phase large ampl…
We consider a self-oscillator whose excitation parameter is varied. Frequency of the variation is much smaller then the natural frequency of the oscillator so that oscillations in the system are periodically excited and decay. Also a time delay as added such that when the oscillations start to grow at a new excitation stage they are influenced via the delay line by the oscillations at the penultimate excitation stage. Due to a nonlinearity the seeding from the past arrives with a doubled phase so that oscillation phase changes from stage to stage according to chaotic Bernoulli-type map. As a r…
We propose an example of smooth autonomous system governed by differential delay equation manifesting chaotic dynamics apparently associated with hyperbolic attractor of Smale - Williams type. The general idea is to depart from a system generating successive pulses of oscillations, each of which gives rise to the next one with transformation of the phase in accordance with chaotic Bernoulli map. From mathematical point of view, it is an infinite-dimensional system due to presence of the time delay. Nevertheless, the material we present gives a foundation to assert that the model delivers an ex…
The time needed to exchange information in the physical world induces a delay term when the respective system is modeled by differential equations. Time delays are hence ubiquitous, being furthermore likely to induce instabilities and with it various kinds of chaotic phases. Which are then the possible types of time delays, induced chaotic states, and methods suitable to characterize the resulting dynamics? This review presents an overview of the field that includes an in-depth discussion of the most important results, of the standard numerical approaches and of several novel tests for identif…
Parametric Correlations of Phase Shifts and Statistics of Time Delays in Quantum Chaotic Scattering: Crossover between Unitary and Orthogonal Symmetries
In this computational paper, we perform sensitivity analysis of long-time (or ensemble) averages in the chaotic regime using the shadowing algorithm. We introduce automatic differentiation to eliminate the tangent/adjoint equation solvers used in the shadowing algorithm. In a gradient-based optimization, we use the computed shadowing sensitivity to minimize different long-time averaged functionals of a chaotic time-delayed system by optimal parameter selection. In combined state and parameter estimation for data assimilation, we use the computed sensitivity to predict the optimal trajectory gi…
We consider an autonomous system constructed as modification of the logistic differential equation with delay that generates successive trains of oscillations with phases evolving according to chaotic maps. The system contains two feedback loops characterized by two generally distinct retarding time parameters. In the case of their equality, chaotic dynamics is associated with the Smale-Williams attractor that corresponds to the double-expanding circle map for the phases of the carrier of the oscillatory trains. Alternatively, at appropriately chosen two different delays attractor is close to …
We present the first report on inverse chaos synchronization where a driven modulated multiple time-delay chaotic system synchronizes to the inverse state of the driver system. Numerical simulations fully support the analytical approach.
