The effective numerical method is developed performing the test of the hyperbolicity of chaotic dynamics. The method employs ideas of algorithms for covariant Lyapunov vectors but avoids their explicit computation. The outcome is a distribution of a characteristic value which is bounded within the unit interval and whose zero indicate the presence of tangency between expanding and contracting subspaces. To perform the test one needs to solve several copies of equations for infinitesimal perturbations whose amount is equal to the sum of numbers of positive and zero Lyapunov exponents. Since for high-dimensional system this amount is normally much less then the full phase space dimension, this method provide the fast and memory saving way for numerical hyperbolicity test of such systems.
We consider a chain of oscillators with hyperbolic chaos coupled via diffusion. When the coupling is strong the chain is synchronized and demonstrates hyperbolic chaos so that there is one positive Lyapunov exponent. With the decay of the coupling the second and the third Lyapunov exponents approach zero simultaneously. The second one becomes positive, while the third one remains close to zero. Its finite-time numerical approximation fluctuates changing the sign within a wide range of the coupling parameter. These fluctuations arise due to the unstable dimension variability which is known to b…
We develop a numerical test of hyperbolicity of chaotic dynamics in time-delay systems. The test is based on the angle criterion and includes computation of angle distributions between expanding, contracting and neutral manifolds of trajectories on the attractor. Three examples are tested. For two of them previously predicted hyperbolicity is confirmed. The third one provides an example of a time-delay system with nonhyperbolic chaos.
We study an ensemble of identical noisy phase oscillators with a blinking mean-field coupling, where one-cluster and two-cluster synchronous states alternate. In the thermodynamic limit the population is described by a nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation. We show that the dynamics of the order parameters demonstrates hyperbolic chaos. The chaoticity manifests itself in phases of the complex mean field, which obey a strongly chaotic Bernoulli map. Hyperbolicity is confirmed by numerical tests based on the calculations of relevant invariant Lyapunov vectors and Lyapunov exponents. We show how the c…
We develop an extension of the fast method of angles for hyperbolicity verification in chaotic systems with an arbitrary number of time-delay feedback loops. The adopted method is based on the theory of covariant Lyapunov vectors and provides an efficient algorithm applicable for systems with high-dimensional phase space. Three particular examples of time-delay systems are analyzed and in all cases the expected hyperbolicity is confirmed.
We investigate a possibility of realization of structurally stable chaotic dynamics in neural systems. The considered model of interacting neurons consists of a pair of coupled FitzHugh-Nagumo systems, with the parameters being periodically modulated in antiphase, so that the neurons undergo alternate excitation with a successive transmission of the phase of oscillations from one neuron to another. It is shown that 4D map arising in a stroboscopic Poincare section of the model flow system possesses a hyperbolic strange attractor of the Smale-Williams type. The dynamical regime observed in the …
New chaos-based communication schemes for transmission of analog and digital information are suggested. The carrier signal is produced by chaotic generator having well-defined oscillation phases at least on short time intervals. For data extraction, a special procedure of phase detection for chaotic signals is developed. An efficiency of the scheme is demonstrated by examples of coupled generators of structurally stable (robust) chaos with hyperbolic attractors of Smale-Williams and Arnold's "cat map" types. Robustness of the transmitter and the receiver makes it possible to transmit informati…
We consider several electronic circuits, which represent dynamical systems with hyperbolic chaotic attractors of Smale-Williams type, and demonstrate results of their simulation using the software package NI Multisim 10. The developed approach is useful as an intermediate step of constructing real electronic devices manifesting structurally stable hyperbolic chaos applicable e.g. in systems of secure communication, noise radar, for cryptographic systems and random number generators. This is also of methodological interest for training students who specialize in radio-physics and nonlinear dyna…
We show that the threshold of complete synchronization in a lattice of coupled non-smooth chaotic maps is determined by linear stability along the directions transversal to the synchronization subspace. As a result, the numerically determined synchronization threshold agree with the analytical results previously obtained [C. Anteneodo et al., Phys. Rev. E 68, 045202(R) (2003)] for this class of systems. We present both careful numerical experiments and a rigorous mathematical explanation confirming this fact, allowing for a generalization involving hyperbolic coupled map lattices.
Dynamical equations are formulated and a numerical study is provided for self-oscillatory model systems based on the triple linkage hinge mechanism of Thurston -- Weeks -- Hunt -- MacKay. We consider systems with holonomic mechanical constraint of three rotators as well as systems, where three rotators interact by potential forces. We present and discuss some quantitative characteristics of the chaotic regimes (Lyapunov exponents, power spectrum). Chaotic dynamics of the models we consider are associated with hyperbolic attractors, at least, at relatively small supercriticality of the self-osc…
A generalized version of standard map is quantized as a model of quantum chaos. It is shown that, in hyperbolic chaotic regime, second moment of quantum level velocity is $\sim 1/\hbar$ as predicted by the random matrix theory.
Starting from Anosov chaotic dynamics of geodesic flow on a surface of negative curvature, we develop and consider a number of self-oscillatory systems including those with hinged mechanical coupling of three rotators and a system of rotators interacting through a potential function. These results are used to design an electronic circuit for generation of rough (structurally stable) chaos. Results of numerical integration of the model equations of different degree of accuracy are presented and discussed. Also, circuit simulation of the electronic generator is provided using the NI Multisim env…
We consider time evolution of Turing patterns in an extended system governed by an equation of the Swift-Hohenberg type, where due to an external periodic parameter modulation long-wave and short-wave patterns with length scales related as 1:3 emerge in succession. We show theoretically and demonstrate numerically that the spatial phases of the patterns, being observed stroboscopically, are governed by an expanding circle map, so that the corresponding chaos of Turing patterns is hyperbolic, associated with a strange attractor of the Smale-Williams solenoid type. This chaos is shown to be robu…
Departing from a system of two non-autonomous amplitude equations, demonstrating hyperbolic chaotic dynamics, we construct a 1D medium as ensemble of such local elements introducing spatial coupling via diffusion. When the length of the medium is small, all spatial cells oscillate synchronously, reproducing the local hyperbolic dynamics. This regime is characterized by a single positive Lyapunov exponent. The hyperbolicity survives when the system gets larger in length so that the second Lyapunov exponent passes zero, and the oscillations become inhomogeneous in space. However, at a point wher…
We apply to bidimensional chaotic maps the numerical method proposed by Ginelli et al. to approximate the associated Oseledets splitting, i.e. the set of linear subspaces spanned by the so called covariant Lyapunov vectors (CLV) and corresponding to the Lyapunov spectrum. These subspaces are the analog of linearized invariant manifolds for non-periodic points, so the angles between them can be used to quantify the degree of hyperbolicity of generic orbits; however, being such splitting non invariant under smooth transformations of phase space, it is interesting to investigate the properties of…
Prequantum dynamics has been introduced in the 70' by Kostant-Souriau-Kirillov as an intermediate between classical and quantum dynamics. In common with the classical dynamics, prequantum dynamics transports functions on phase space, but add some phases which are important in quantum interference effects. In the case of hyperbolic dynamical systems, it is believed that the study of the prequantum dynamics will give a better understanding of the quantum interference effects for large time, and of their statistical properties. We consider a linear hyperbolic map M in SL(2,Z) which generates a ch…
The dynamics of many important high-dimensional dynamical systems are both chaotic and complex, meaning that strong reducing hypotheses are required to understand the dynamics. The highly influential chaotic hypothesis of Gallavotti and Cohen states that the large-scale dynamics of high-dimensional systems are effectively uniformly hyperbolic, which implies many felicitous statistical properties. We obtain direct and reliable numerical evidence, contrary to the chaotic hypothesis, of the existence of non-hyperbolic large-scale dynamical structures in a mean-field coupled system. To do this we …
We introduce a novel approach for controlling fast chaos in time-delay dynamical systems and use it to control a chaotic photonic device with a characteristic time scale of ~12 ns. Our approach is a prescription for how to implement existing chaos control algorithms in a way that exploits the system's inherent time-delay and allows control even in the presence of substantial control-loop latency (the finite time it takes signals to propagate through the components in the controller). This research paves the way for applications exploiting fast control of chaos, such as chaos-based communicatio…
A system of $N$ rotators is investigated with a constraint given by a condition of vanishing sum of the cosines of the rotation angles. Equations of the dynamics are formulated and results of numerical simulation for the cases $N$=3, 4, and 5 are presented relating to the geodesic flows on a two-dimensional, three-dimensional, and four-dimensional manifold, respectively, in a compact region (due to the periodicity of the configuration space in angular variables). It is shown that a system of three rotators demonstrates chaos, characterized by one positive Lyapunov exponent, and for systems of …
It is proved that the motion of a charge particle on a hyperbolic oriented two-dimensional surface in a magnetic field given by the volume form of the hyperbolic metric is completely integrable on the energy levels E < 1/2 in terms of real-analytic integrals. However it was known that on the level E=1/2 every trajectory is transitive and the restrictions of this flow onto the levels E>1/2 are Anosov flows
By using chaos synchronization between non-identical multiple time delay semiconductor lasers with optoelectronic feedbacks, we demonstrate numerically how fast dynamic logic gates can be constructed. The results may be helpful to obtain a computational hardware with reconfigurable properties.
Chaotic multiscale dynamical systems are common in many areas of science, one of the examples being the interaction of the low-frequency dynamics in the atmosphere with the fast turbulent weather dynamics. One of the key questions about chaotic multiscale systems is how the fast dynamics affects chaos at the slow variables, and, therefore, impacts uncertainty and predictability of the slow dynamics. Here we demonstrate that the linear slow-fast coupling with the total energy conservation property promotes the suppression of chaos at the slow variables through the rapid mixing at the fast varia…
Coupled dynamical systems with one slow element and many fast elements are analyzed. By averaging over the dynamics of the fast variables, the adiabatic kinetic branch is introduced for the dynamics of the slow variable in the adiabatic limit. The dynamics without the limit are found to be represented by stochastic switching over these branches mediated by the collective chaos of the fast elements, while the switching frequency shows a complicated dependence on the ratio of the two timescales with some resonance structure. The ubiquity of the phenomena in the slow--fast dynamics is also discus…
We show, using covariant Lyapunov vectors, that the chaotic solutions of spatially extended dissipative systems evolve within a manifold spanned by a finite number of physical modes hyperbolically isolated from a set of residual degrees of freedom, themselves individually isolated from each other. In the context of dissipative partial differential equations, our results imply that a faithful numerical integration needs to incorporate at least all physical modes and that increasing the resolution merely increases the number of isolated modes.
In previous work, the $k$-logistic map [Machicao and Bruno, Chaos, vol. 27, 053116 (2017)] was introduced as a transformation operating in the $k$ less significant digits of the Logistic map. It exploited the map's pseudo-randomness character that is present in its less significant digits. In this work, we comprehensively analyze the dynamical and ergodic aspects of this transformation, show its applicability to generic chaotic maps or sets, and its potential impact on enabling the creation of a cryptosystem that is fast, light and reliable.
We study the coupling induced destabilization in an array of identical oscillators coupled in a ring structure where the number of oscillators in the ring is large. The coupling structure includes different types of interactions with several next neighbors. We derive an amplitude equation of Ginzburg-Landau type, which describes the destabilization of a uniform stationary state in a ring with a large number of nodes. Applying these results to unidirectionally coupled Duffing oscillators, we explain the phenomenon of a fast transition to chaos, which has been numerically observed in such system…
It is shown that a paradigm of classical statistical mechanics --- the thermalization of a Brownian particle --- has a low-dimensional, deterministic analogue: when a heavy, slow system is coupled to fast deterministic chaos, the resultant forces drive the slow degrees of freedom toward a state of statistical equilibrium with the fast degrees. This illustrates how concepts useful in statistical mechanics may apply in situations where low-dimensional chaos exists.
