We study an ensemble of identical noisy phase oscillators with a blinking mean-field coupling, where one-cluster and two-cluster synchronous states alternate. In the thermodynamic limit the population is described by a nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation. We show that the dynamics of the order parameters demonstrates hyperbolic chaos. The chaoticity manifests itself in phases of the complex mean field, which obey a strongly chaotic Bernoulli map. Hyperbolicity is confirmed by numerical tests based on the calculations of relevant invariant Lyapunov vectors and Lyapunov exponents. We show how the chaotic dynamics of the phases is slightly smeared by finite-size fluctuations.
In globally coupled ensembles of identical oscillators so-called chimera states can be observed. The chimera state is a symmetry-broken regime, where a subset of oscillators forms a cluster, a synchronized population, while the rest of the system remains a collection of non-synchronized, scattered units. We describe here a blinking chimera regime in an ensemble of seven globally coupled rotators (Kuramoto oscillators with inertia). It is characterized by a death-birth process, where a long-term stable cluster of four oscillators suddenly dissolves and is very quickly reborn with a new, reshuff…
This paper presents the result of the investigation of chaotic oscillator synchronization. A new approach for detecting of synchronized behaviour of chaotic oscillators has been proposed. This approach is based on the analysis of different time scales in the time series generated by the coupled chaotic oscillators. This approach has been applied for the coupled Rossler and Lorenz systems.
We present a methodology for synchronization of chaotic oscillators with linear feedback control. The proposed method is based on analyzing the chaotic oscillator as a multi-mode linear system and deriving sufficient conditions for asymptotic stability. The oscillators are synchronized in a master-slave configuration, wherein a subset of the state variables for implementing the feedback control, enabling applications in cryptography for message encryption using the unused chaotic state variables. Controller stability is ensured through conventional root-locus technique for designing appropriat…
Spatiotemporal chaos in the form of defect-mediated turbulence is known for oscillators coupled by diffusion. Here we explore the same conditions that produce defect turbulence, in an array of oscillators that are coupled through the activator to a regular oscillator. We find that for very small coupling the oscillators behave independent of each other and then there is a transition to complete synchronization. On further increasing the coupling strength, there is period doubling and a transition to chaotic behavior of each driven unit. However the global behavior shows some ordering, and the …
An analysis of a recently proposed cryptosystem based on chaotic oscillators and feedback inversion is presented. It is shown how the cryptosystem can be broken when Duffing's oscillator is considered. Some implementation problems of the system are also discussed.
Amplitude death can occur in chaotic dynamical systems with time-delay coupling, similar to the case of coupled limit cycles. The coupling leads to stabilization of fixed points of the subsystems. This phenomenon is quite general, and occurs for identical as well as nonidentical coupled chaotic systems. Using the Lorenz and Rössler chaotic oscillators to construct representative systems, various possible transitions from chaotic dynamics to fixed points are discussed.
The behaviors of coupled chaotic oscillators before complete synchronization were investigated. We report three phenomena: (1) The emergence of long-time residence of trajectories besides one of the saddle foci; (2) The tendency that orbits of the two oscillators get close becomes faster with increasing the coupling strength; (3) The diffusion of two oscillator's phase difference is first enhanced and then suppressed. There are exact correspondences among these phenomena. The mechanism of these correspondences is explored. These phenomena uncover the route to synchronization of coupled chaotic…
We have found a synchronization behavior between two identical chaotic systems^M when their delay times are modulated by a common irregular signal. ^M This phenomenon is demonstrated both in two identical chaotic maps whose delay times are driven by a common^M chaotic or random signal and in two identical chaotic oscillators whose delay times are driven by^M a signal of another chaotic oscillator. We analyze the phenomenon by using^M the Lyapunov exponents and discuss it in relation with generalized synchronization.^M
We investigate the synchronization behavior of a system of globally coupled, continuous-time oscillators possessing robust chaos. The local dynamics corresponds to the Shimizu-Morioka model where the occurrence of robust chaos in a region of its parameter space has been recently discovered. We show that the global coupling can drive the oscillators to synchronization into a fixed point created by the coupling, resulting in amplitude death in the system. The existence of robust chaos allows to introduce heterogeneity in the local parameters, while guaranteeing the functioning of all the oscilla…
We observe chaotic dynamics in a damped linear oscillator, which is driven only at certain regions of phase space. Both deterministic and random drives are studied. The dynamics is characterized using standard techniques of nonlinear dynamics. Interchanging roles of determinism and stochasticity is also considered.
Chaotic dynamics of a nonlinear oscillator is considered in the semiclassical approximation. The Loschmidt echo is calculated for a time scale which is of the power law in semiclassical parameter. It is shown that an exponential decay of the Loschmidt echo is due to a Lyapunov exponent and it has a pure classical nature.
We consider a network of four non-identical chaotic Rossler oscillators. The possibility is shown of appearance of two-, three- and four-frequency invariant tori resulting from secondary quasi-periodic Hopf bifurcations and saddle-node homoclinic bifurcations of tori.
We examine the Melnikov criterion for transition to chaos in case of a single degree of freedom nonlinear oscillator with the Ueda well potential and an external periodic excitation term. Using effective Hamiltonian we have examined homoclinic orbits and cross-sections of stable and unstable manifolds which gave the condition of transition to chaos through a homoclinic bifurcation.
Using the method of adiabatic invariants and the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, we have successfully got the excited-state wave functions for a pair of coupled oscillators in the so-called \textit{semiquantum chaos}. Some interesting characteristics in the \textit{Fourier spectra} of the wave functions and its \textit{Correlation Functions} in the regular and chaos states have been found, which offers a new way to distinguish the regular and chaotic states in quantum system.
We examine the Mielnikov criterion for transition to chaos in case of one degree of freedom nonlinear oscillator with non symmetric potential. This system subjected to an external periodic force shows homoclinic transition from regular vibrations to chaos just before escape from the potential well. Especially we study the effect of a second resonant excitation with different phase on the system transition to chaos and propose a way of its control.
In a chain of mutually coupled oscillators, the coupling threshold for synchronization between the outermost identical oscillators decreases when a type of impurity (in terms of parameter mismatch) is introduced in the inner oscillator(s). The outer oscillators interact indirectly via dynamic relaying, mediated by the inner oscillator(s). We confirm this enhancing of critical coupling in the chaotic regimes of Rössler system in absence of coupling delay and in Mackey-Glass system with delay coupling. The enhancing effect is experimentally verified in electronic circuit of Rössler oscillators.
We consider an infinite network of globally-coupled phase oscillators in which the natural frequencies of the oscillators are drawn from a symmetric bimodal distribution. We demonstrate that macroscopic chaos can occur in this system when the coupling strength varies periodically in time. We identify period-doubling cascades to chaos, attractor crises, and horseshoe dynamics for the macroscopic mean field. Based on recent work that clarified the bifurcation structure of the static bimodal Kuramoto system, we qualitatively describe the mechanism for the generation of such complicated behavior i…
This paper presents a phase description of chaotic dynamics for the study of chaotic phase synchronization. A prominent feature of the proposed description is that it systematically incorporates the dynamics of the non-phase variables inherent in the system. Taking these non-phase dynamics into account is essential for capturing the complicated nature of chaotic phase synchronization, even in a qualitative manner. We numerically verified the validity of the proposed description in application to the Rössler and Lorenz oscillators, and we found that our method provides an accurate description o…
This paper deals with two types of synchronous behavior of chaotic oscillators -- generalized synchronization and noise--induced synchronization. It has been shown that both these types of synchronization are caused by similar mechanisms and should be considered as the same type of the chaotic oscillator behavior. The mechanisms resulting in the generalized synchronization are mostly similar to ones taking place in the case of the noise-induced synchronization with biased noise.
We explore the behaviour of chaotic oscillators in hierarchical networks coupled to an external chaotic system whose intrinsic dynamics is dissimilar to the other oscillators in the network. Specifically, each oscillator couples to the mean-field of the oscillators below it in the hierarchy, and couples diffusively to the oscillator above it in the hierarchy. We find that coupling to one dissimilar external system manages to suppress the chaotic dynamics of all the oscillators in the network at sufficiently high coupling strength. This holds true irrespective of whether the connection to the e…
Periodic forcing of nonlinear oscillators generates a rich and complex variety of behaviors, ranging from regular to chaotic behavior. In this work we seek to control, i.e., either suppress or generate, the chaotic behavior of a classical reference example in books or introductory articles, the Duffing oscillator. For this purpose, we propose an elegant strategy consisting of simply adjusting the shape of the time-dependent forcing. The efficiency of the proposed strategy is shown analytically, numerically and experimentally. In addition due to its simplicity and low cost such a work could eas…
We study an opto-electronic time-delay oscillator that displays high-speed chaotic behavior with a flat, broad power spectrum. The chaotic state coexists with a linearly-stable fixed point, which, when subjected to a finite-amplitude perturbation, loses stability initially via a periodic train of ultrafast pulses. We derive an approximate map that does an excellent job of capturing the observed instability. The oscillator provides a simple device for fundamental studies of time-delay dynamical systems and can be used as a building block for ultra-wide-band sensor networks.
We investigate phase synchronization between two identical or detuned response oscillators coupled to a slightly different drive oscillator. Our result is that phase synchronization can occur between response oscillators when they are driven by correlated (but not identical) inputs from the drive oscillator. We call this phenomenon Generalized Phase Synchronization (GPS) and clarify its characteristics using Lyapunov exponents and phase difference plots.
We introduce an optimal phase description of chaotic oscillations by generalizing the concept of isochrones. On chaotic attractors possessing a general phase description, we define the optimal isophases as Poincaré surfaces showing return times as constant as possible. The dynamics of the resultant optimal phase is maximally decoupled of the amplitude dynamics, and provides a proper description of phase resetting of chaotic oscillations. The method is illustrated with the Rössler and Lorenz systems.
We investigate the collective behavior of a system of chaotic Rossler oscillators indirectly coupled through a common environment that possesses its own dynamics and which in turn is modulated by the interaction with the oscillators. By varying the parameter representing the coupling strength between the oscillators and the environment, we find two collective states previously not reported in systems with environmental coupling: (i) nontrivial collective behavior, characterized by a periodic evolution of macroscopic variables coexisting with the local chaotic dynamics; and (ii) dynamical clus…
This paper addresses the problem of finite-time synchronization of tunnel diode based chaotic oscillators. After a brief investigation of its chaotic dynamics, we propose an active adaptive feedback coupling which accomplishes the synchronization of tunnel diode based chaotic systems with and without the presence of delay(s), basing ourselves on Lyapunov and on Krasovskii-Lyapunov stability theories. This feedback coupling could be applied to many other chaotic systems. A finite horizon can be arbitrarily established by ensuring that chaos synchronization is achieved at a pre-established time.…
In this paper we study both experimentally and numerically the intermittent behavior taking place near the boundary of the synchronous time scales of chaotic oscillators being in the regime of time scale synchronization. We have shown that the observed type of the intermittent behavior should be classified as the ring intermittency.
We study the manner in which the effect of an external drive is transmitted through mutually coupled response systems by examining the phase synchrony between the drive and the response. Two different coupling schemes are used. Homogeneous couplings are via the same variables, while heterogeneous couplings are through different variables. With the latter scenario, synchronization regimes are truncated with increasing number of mutually coupled oscillators, in contrast to homogeneous coupling schemes. Our results are illustrated for systems of coupled chaotic Rössler oscillators.
The effect of impurities in a two-dimensional lattice of coupled nonlinear chaotic oscillators and their ability to control the dynamical behavior of the system are studied. We show that a single impurity can produce synchronized spatio-temporal patterns, even though all oscillators and the impurity are chaotic when uncoupled. When a small number of impurities is arranged in a way, that the lattice is divided into two disjoint parts, synchronization is enforced even for small coupling. The synchronization is not affected as the size of the lattice increases, although the impurity concentration…
We report experimental control of chaos in an electronic circuit at 43.9 MHz, which is the fastest chaos control reported in the literature to date. Limiter control is used to stabilize a periodic orbit in a tuned collector transistor oscillator modified to exhibit simply folded band chaos. The limiter is implemented using a transistor to enable monitoring the relative magnitude of the control perturbation. A plot of the relative control magnitude vs. limiter level shows a local minimum at period-1 control, thereby providing strong evidence that the controlled state is an unstable periodic orb…
We study the dynamics of a two-degrees-of-freedom (two DOF) nonlinear oscillator representing a quartercar model excited by a road roughness profile. Modelling the road profile by means of a harmonic function we derive the Melnikov criterion for a system transition to chaos or escape. The analytically obtained estimations are confirmed by numerical simulations. To analyze the transient vibrations we used recurrences.
Formation of chaos in the parametric dependent system of interacting oscillators for the both classical and quantum cases has been investigated. Domain in which classical motion is chaotic is defined. It has been shown that for certain values of the parameters from this domain, form of the classical power spectrum is in a good agreement with the quantum band profile. Local density of states is calculated. The range in which application of perturbation theory is correct has been defined.
We experimentally demonstrate and numerically simulate a new adaptive method to maintain synchronization between coupled nonlinear chaotic oscillators, when the coupling between the systems is unknown and time-varying (e.g., due to environmental parameter drift). The technique is applied to optoelectronic feedback loops exhibiting high dimensional chaotic dynamics. In addition to keeping the two systems isochronally synchronized in the presence of a priori unknown time-varying coupling strength, the technique provides an estimate of the time-varying coupling.
We discuss Hamiltonian model of oscillator lattice with local coupling. Model describes spatial modes of nonlinear Schrödinger equation with periodic tilted potential. The Hamiltonian system manifests reversibility of Topaj - Pikovsky phase oscillator lattice. Furthermore, the Hamiltonian system has invariant manifolds with dynamics exactly equivalent to the Topaj - Pikovsky model. We demonstrate the complexity of dynamics with results of numerical simulations. We also propose two dissipative models close to Topaj - Pikovsky system.
A general stability analysis is presented for the determination of the transition from incoherent to coherent behavior in an ensemble of globally coupled, heterogeneous, continuous-time dynamical systems. The formalism allows for the simultaneous presence of ensemble members exhibiting chaotic and periodic behavior, and, in a special case, yields the Kuramoto model for globally coupled periodic oscillators described by a phase. Numerical experiments using different types of ensembles of Lorenz equations with a distribution of parameters are presented.
Two identical chaotic oscillators that are mutually coupled via time delayed signals show very complex patterns of completely synchronized dynamics including stationary states and periodic as well as chaotic oscillations. We have experimentally observed these synchronized states in delay-coupled electronic circuits and have analyzed their stability by numerical simulations and analytical calculations. We found that the conditions for longitudinal and transversal stability largely exclude each other and prevent e.g. the synchronization of Pyragas-controlled orbits. Most striking is the observat…
The Hopf oscillator has been shown to capture many phenomena of the auditory and vestibular systems. These systems exhibit remarkable temporal resolution and sensitivity to weak signals, as they are able to detect sounds that induce motion in the sub-nanometer regime. In the present work, we find the analytic response function of a nonisochronous Hopf oscillator to a step stimulus and show that the system is most sensitive in the regime where noise induces chaotic dynamics. We show that this regime also provides a faster response and enhanced temporal resolution. Thus, the system can detect a …
The chaotic nature of a storage-ring Free Electron Laser (FEL) is investigated. The derivation of a low embedding dimension for the dynamics allows the low-dimensionality of this complex system to be observed, whereas its unpredictability is demonstrated, in some ranges of parameters, by a positive Lyapounov exponent. The route to chaos is then explored by tuning a single control parameter, and a period-doubling cascade is evidenced, as well as intermittence.
The effect of the shape of six different periodic forces and second periodic forces on the onset of horseshoe chaos are studied both analytically and numerically in a Duffing oscillator. The external periodic forces considered are sine wave, square wave, symmetric saw-tooth wave, asymmetric saw-tooth wave, rectified sine wave, and modulus of sine wave. An analytical threshold condition for the onset of horseshoe chaos is obtained in the Duffing oscillator driven by various periodic forces using the Melnikov method. Melnikov threshold curve is drawn in a parameter space. For all the forces exce…
The regular and chaotic behavior of modified Rayleigh-Duffing oscillator is studied. We consider in this paper the dynamics of Modified Rayleigh Duffing oscillator. The harmonic balance method are used to find the amplitudes of the oscillatory states, and analyze. The influence of system parameters are clearly found on the bifurcations in the response of this system is investigated. It is found also hysteresis and jump phenomenon are appered or desappered when certain parameters incrases or descrases. Various bifurcation structures, the variation of the Lyapunov exponent are obtained, using nu…
The conditions for synchronization in unidirectionally coupled chaotic oscillators are revisited. We demonstrate with typical examples that the conditional Lyapunov exponents (CLEs) play an important role in distinguishing between intermittent and permanent synchronizations, when the analytic conditions for chaos synchronization are not uniformly obeyed. We show that intermittent synchronization can occur when CLEs are very small positive or negative values close to zero while permanent synchronization occurs when CLEs take sufficiently large negative values. There is also strong evidence for …
Discrete fractional order chaotic systems extends the memory capability to capture the discrete nature of physical systems. In this research, the memristive discrete fractional order chaotic system is introduced. The dynamics of the system was studied using bifurcation diagrams and phase space construction. The system was found chaotic with fractional order $0.465<n<0.562$. The dynamics of the system under different values makes it useful as a switch. Controllers were developed for the tracking control of the two systems to different trajectories. The effectiveness of the designed controllers …
We present and experimentally demonstrate a technique for achieving and maintaining a global state of identical synchrony of an arbitrary network of chaotic oscillators even when the coupling strengths are unknown and time-varying. At each node an adaptive synchronization algorithm dynamically estimates the current strength of the net coupling signal to that node. We experimentally demonstrate this scheme in a network of three bidirectionally coupled chaotic optoelectronic feedback loops and we present numerical simulations showing its application in larger networks. The stability of the synch…
In this paper, we study dynamical systems in which a large number $N$ of identical Landau-Stuart oscillators are globally coupled via a mean-field. Previously, it has been observed that this type of system can exhibit a variety of different dynamical behaviors including clumped states in which each oscillator is in one of a small number of groups for which all oscillators in each group have the same state which is different from group to group, as well as situations in which all oscillators have different states and the macroscopic dynamics of the mean field is chaotic. We argue that this seco…
We investigate the characteristics of temporal phase locking states observed in the route to phase synchronization. It is found that before phase synchronization there is a periodic phase synchronization state characterized by periodic appearance of temporal phase locking state and that the state leads to local negativeness in one of the vanishing Lyapunov exponents. By taking a statistical measure, we present the evidences of the phenomenon in unidirectionally and mutually coupled chaotic oscillators, respectively. And it is qualitatively discussed that the phenomenon is described by a nonuni…
A new type of intermittent behavior is described to occur near the boundary of phase synchronization regime of coupled chaotic oscillators. This mechanism, called ring intermittency, arises for sufficiently high initial mismatches in the frequencies of the two coupled systems. The laws for both the distribution and the mean length of the laminar phases versus the coupling strength are analytically deduced. A very good agreement between the theoretical results and the numerically calculated data is shown. We discuss how this mechanism is expected to take place in other relevant physical circums…
We study chaotic behavior of order parameters in two coupled ensembles of self-sustained oscillators. Coupling within each of these ensembles is switched on and off alternately, while the mutual interaction between these two subsystems is arranged through quadratic nonlinear coupling. We show numerically that in the course of alternating Kuramoto transitions to synchrony and back to asynchrony, the exchange of excitations between two subpopulations proceeds in such a way that their collective phases are governed by an expanding circle map similar to the Bernoulli map. We perform the Lyapunov a…
The chaotic behavior of the modified Rayleigh-Duffing oscillator with $ ϕ^6$ potential and external excitation which modeles ship rolling motions are investigated both analytically and numerically. Melnikov method is applied and the conditions for the existence of homoclinic and heteroclinic chaos are obtained. The effects of nonlinear damping on roll motion of ships are analyzed in detail. As it is known, nonlinear roll damping is a very important parameter in estimating ship reponses. The predictions are tested numerical simulations based on the basin of attraction. We conclude that certains…
Two types of phase synchronization (accordingly, two scenarios of breaking phase synchronization) between coupled stochastic oscillators are shown to exist depending on the discrepancy between the control parameters of interacting oscillators, as in the case of classical synchronization of periodic oscillators. If interacting stochastic oscillators are weakly detuned, the phase coherency of the attractors persists when phase synchronization breaks. Conversely, if the control parameters differ considerably, the chaotic attractor becomes phase-incoherent under the conditions of phase synchroniza…
We experimentally demonstrate group synchrony in a network of four nonlinear optoelectronic oscillators with time-delayed coupling. We divide the nodes into two groups of two each, by giving each group different parameters and by enabling only inter-group coupling. When coupled in this fashion, the two groups display different dynamics, with no isochronal synchrony between them, but the nodes in a single group are isochronally synchronized, even though there is no intra-group coupling. We compare experimental behavior with theoretical and numerical results.
We study the energy flow between a one dimensional oscillator and a chaotic system with two degrees of freedom in the weak coupling limit. The oscillator's observables are averaged over an initially microcanonical ensemble of trajectories of the chaotic system, which plays the role of an environment for the oscillator. We show numerically that the oscillator's average energy exhibits irreversible dynamics and `thermal' equilibrium at long times. We use linear response theory to describe the dynamics at short times and we derive a condition for the absorption or dissipation of energy by the osc…
We show that chimera states, where differentiated subsets of synchronized and desynchronized dynamical elements coexist, can emerge in networks of hyperbolic chaotic oscillators subject to global interactions. As local dynamics we employ Lozi maps which possess hyperbolic chaotic attractors. We consider a globally coupled system of these maps and use two statistical quantities to describe its collective behavior: the average fraction of elements belonging to clusters and the average standard deviation of state variables. Chimera states, clusters, complete synchronization, and incoherence are t…
We explore the behaviour of an ensemble of chaotic oscillators coupled only to an external chaotic system, whose intrinsic dynamics may be similar or dissimilar to the group. Counter-intuitively, we find that a dissimilar external system manages to suppress the intrinsic chaos of the oscillators to fixed point dynamics, at sufficiently high coupling strengths. So, while synchronization is induced readily by coupling to an identical external system, control to fixed states is achieved only if the external system is dissimilar. We quantify the efficacy of control by estimating the fraction of ra…
Two types of spatiotemporal chaos exhibited by ensembles of coupled nonlinear oscillators are analyzed using independent component analysis (ICA). For diffusively coupled complex Ginzburg-Landau oscillators that exhibit smooth amplitude patterns, ICA extracts localized one-humped basis vectors that reflect the characteristic hole structures of the system, and for nonlocally coupled complex Ginzburg-Landau oscillators with fractal amplitude patterns, ICA extracts localized basis vectors with characteristic gap structures. Statistics of the decomposed signals also provide insight into the comple…
We investigate the origin of the transition inside the desynchronization state via phase jumps in coupled chaotic oscillators. We claim that the transition is governed by type-I intermittency in the presence of noise whose characteristic relation is $<l > \propto \exp(α|ε_t -ε|^{3/2})$ for $ε_t -ε<0$ and $<l > \propto (ε_t -ε)^{-1/2}$ for $ε_t -ε>0$, where $<l>$ is the average length of the phase locking state and $ε$ is the coupling strength. To justify our claim we obtain analytically the tangent point, the bifurcation point, and the return map which agree well with those of the numerical si…
We characterize the synchronization of an array of coupled chaotic elements as a phase transition where order parameters related to the joint probability at two sites obey power laws versus the mutual coupling strength; the phase transition corresponds to a change in the exponent of the power law. Since these studies are motivated by the behaviour of the cortical neurons in cognitive tasks, we account for the short time available to any brain decision by studying how the mutual coupling affects the transient behaviour of a synchronization transition over a fixed time interval. We present a nov…
An effective white-noise Langevin equation is derived that describes long-time phase dynamics of a limit-cycle oscillator subjected to weak stationary colored noise. Effective drift and diffusion coefficients are given in terms of the phase sensitivity of the oscillator and the correlation function of the noise, and are explicitly calculated for oscillators with sinusoidal phase sensitivity functions driven by two typical colored Gaussian processes. The results are verified by numerical simulations using several types of stochastic or chaotic noise. The drift and diffusion coefficients of osci…
