Using the generalized symmetry method we finish a classification, started in the article [R.N. Garifullin, R.I. Yamilov and D. Levi, Classification of five-point differential-difference equations, J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 50 (2017) 125201 (27pp)], of integrable autonomous five-point differential-difference equations. The resulting list, up to autonomous point transformations, contains 14 equations some of which seem to be new. We have found non-autonomous or non-point transformations relating most of the obtained equations among themselves as well as their generalized symmetries.
Using the generalized symmetry method, we carry out, up to autonomous point transformations, the classification of integrable equations of a subclass of the autonomous five-point differential-difference equations. This subclass includes such well-known examples as the Itoh-Narita-Bogoyavlensky and the discrete Sawada-Kotera equations. The resulting list contains 17 equations some of which seem to be new. We have found non-point transformations relating most of the resulting equations among themselves and their generalized symmetries.
Non-point invertible transformations are completely described for difference equations on the quad-graph and for their differential-difference analogues. As an illustration, these transformations are used to construct new examples of integrable equations and autotransformations of the Hietarinta equation.
By introducing suitable non-isospectral flows we construct two sets of symmetries for the isospectral differential-difference Kadomstev-Petviashvili hierarchy. The symmetries form an infinite dimensional Lie algebra.
A multi-linear variable separation approach is developed to solve a differential-difference Toda equation. The semi-discrete form of the continuous universal formula is found for a suitable potential of the differential-difference Toda system. Abundant semi-discrete localized coherent structures of the potential can be found by appropriately selecting the arbitrary functions of the semi-discrete form of the universal formula.
We present a Lax pair for the sixth Painlevé equation arising as a continuous isomonodromic deformation of a system of linear difference equations with an additional symmetry structure. We call this a symmetric difference-differential Lax pair. We show how the discrete isomonodromic deformations of the associated linear problem gives us a discrete version of the fifth Painlevé equation. By considering degenerations we obtain symmetric difference-differential Lax pairs for the fifth Painlevé equation and the various degenerate versions of the third Painlevé equation.
We compute the algebraic entropy of a class of integrable Volterra-like five-point differential-difference equations recently classified using the generalised symmetry method. We show that, when applicable, the results of the algebraic entropy agrees with the result of the generalised symmetry method, as all the equations in this class have vanishing entropy.
A new method named rational expansion method of exponent function is presented to find exact traveling wave solutions of differential-difference equations. This method generalizes the so-called tanh-method and other similar methods. Some examples are dealt with and their abundant exact solutions which include solitary solutions and periodic solutions are obtained. Among them, many solutions are new.
We address the problem of classification of integrable differential-difference equations in 2+1 dimensions with one/two discrete variables. Our approach is based on the method of hydrodynamic reductions and its generalisation to dispersive equations. We obtain a number of classification results of scalar integrable equations including that of the intermediate long wave and Toda type.
Two integrable differential-difference equations are derived from a (2+1)-dimensional modified Heisenberg ferromagnetic equation and a resonant nonlinear Schröinger equation respectively. Multi-soliton solutions of the resulted semi-discrete systems are given through Hirota's bilinear method. Elastic and inelastic interaction behavior between two solitons are studied through the asymptotic analysis. Dynamics of two-soliton solutions are shown with graphs.
A new algorithm is presented to find exact traveling wave solutions of differential-difference equations in terms of tanh functions. For systems with parameters, the algorithm determines the conditions on the parameters so that the equations might admit polynomial solutions in tanh. Examples illustrate the key steps of the algorithm. Parallels are drawn through discussion and example to the tanh-method for partial differential equations. The new algorithm is implemented in Mathematica. The package DDESpecialSolutions.m can be used to automatically compute traveling wave solutions of nonlinear …
The article investigates systems of differential-difference equations of hyperbolic type, integrable in sense of Darboux. The concept of a complete set of independent characteristic integrals underlying Darboux integrability is discussed. A close connection is found between integrals and characteristic Lie-Rinehart algebras of the system. It is proved that a system of equations is Darboux integrable if and only if its characteristic algebras in both directions are finite-dimensional.
In this paper we construct the autonomous quad-equations which admit as symmetries the five-point differential-difference equations belonging to known lists found by Garifullin, Yamilov and Levi. The obtained equations are classified up to autonomous point transformations and some simple non-autonomous transformations. We discuss our results in the framework of the known literature. There are among them a few new examples of both sine-Gordon and Liouville type equations.
Algorithms for the symbolic computation of conserved densities, fluxes, generalized symmetries, and recursion operators for systems of nonlinear differential-difference equations are presented. In the algorithms we use discrete versions of the Frechet and variational derivatives, as well as discrete Euler and homotopy operators. The algorithms are illustrated for prototypical nonlinear lattices, including the Kac-van Moerbeke (Volterra) and Toda lattices. Results are shown for the modified Volterra and Ablowitz-Ladik lattices.
In this paper we review two concepts directly related to the Lax representations: Darboux transformations and Recursion operators for integrable systems. We then present an extensive list of integrable differential-difference equations together with their Hamiltonian structures, recursion operators, nontrivial generalised symmetries and Darboux-Lax representations. The new results include multi-Hamiltonian structures and recursion operators for integrable Volterra type equations, integrable discretization of derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equations such as the Kaup-Newell lattice, the Chen-L…
The paper reveals clear links between the differential-difference Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchy and the (continuous) Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchy, together with their symmetries, Hamiltonian structures and conserved quantities. They are connected through a uniform continuum limit. For the differential-difference Kadomtsev-Petviashvili system, we introduce Lax triads to generate isospectral and non-isospectral flows. This approach provides an integrable master symmetry and simple zero curvature representations of flows. The obtained flows are then proved to generate a Lie algebra w.r.t. …
In this paper we introduce preHamiltonian pairs of difference operators and study their connections with Nijenhuis operators and the existence of weakly non-local inverse recursion operators for differential-difference equations. We begin with a rigorous setup of the problem in terms of the skew field $Q$ of rational (pseudo--difference) operators over a difference field $F$ with a zero characteristic subfield of constants $k\subset F$ and the principal ideal ring $M_n(Q)$ of matrix rational (pseudo-difference) operators. In particular, we give a criteria for a rational operator to be weakly n…
The purpose of this article is to develop an algebraic approach to the problem of integrable classification of differential-difference equations with one continuous and two discrete variables. As a classification criterion, we put forward the following hypothesis. Any integrable equation of the type under consideration admits an infinite sequence of finite-field Darboux-integrable reductions. The property of Darboux integrability of a finite-field system is formalized as finite-dimensionality condition of its characteristic Lie-Rinehart algebras. That allows one to derive effective integrabili…
A sequence of canonical conservation laws for all the Adler-Bobenko-Suris equations is derived and is employed in the construction of a hierarchy of master symmetries for equations H1-H3, Q1-Q3. For the discrete potential and Schwarzian KdV equations it is shown that their local generalized symmetries and non-local master symmetries in each lattice direction form centerless Virasoro type algebras. In particular, for the discrete potential KdV, the structure of its symmetry algebra is explicitly given. Interpreting the hierarchies of symmetries of equations H1-H3, Q1-Q3 as differential-differen…
This note is designed to show some classes of differential-difference equations admitting Lax representation which generalize evolutionary equations known in the literature.

A new method for the computation of conserved densities of nonlinear differential-difference equations is applied to Toda lattices and discretizations of the Korteweg-de Vries and nonlinear Schrodinger equations. The algorithm, which can be implemented in computer algebra languages such as Mathematica, can be used as an indicator of integrability.
We first obtain the master symmetry of the differential-difference KP equation. Then we show how this master symmetry, through sl(2;C)-representation of the equation, can construct generators of time dependent symmetries.
Matrix Riccati equations and other nonlinear ordinary differential equations with superposition formulas are, in the case of constant coefficients, shown to have the same exact solutions as their group theoretical discretizations. Explicit solutions of certain classes of scalar and matrix Riccati equations are presented as an illustration of the general results.
We develop the notions of multiplicative Lie conformal and Poisson vertex algebras, local and non-local, and their connections to the theory of integrable differential-difference Hamiltonian equations. We establish relations of these notions to $q$-deformed $W$-algebras and lattice Poisson algebras. We introduce the notion of Adler type pseudodifference operators and apply them to integrability of differential-difference Hamiltonian equations.
We propose a systematic method for constructing integrable delay-difference and delay-differential analogues of known soliton equations such as the Lotka-Volterra, Toda lattice, and sine-Gordon equations and their multi-soliton solutions. It is carried out by applying a reduction and delay-differential limit to the discrete KP or discrete two-dimensional Toda lattice equations. Each of the delay-difference and delay-differential equations has the N-soliton solution, which depends on the delay parameter and converges to an N-soliton solution of a known soliton equation as the delay parameter ap…
In this note we present some ideas on when Lie symmetries, both point and generalized, can depend on arbitrary functions. We show on a few examples, both in partial differential and partial difference equations when this happens. Moreover we show that the infinitesimal generators of generalized symmetries depending on arbitrary functions, both for continuous and discrete equations, effectively play the role of master symmetries.
Delay-difference and delay-differential analogues of the KdV and Boussinesq (BSQ) equations are presented. Each of them has the N-soliton solution and reduces to an already known soliton equation as the delay parameter approaches 0. In addition, a delay-differential analogue of the KP equation is proposed. We discuss its N-soliton solution and the limit as the delay parameter approaches 0. Finally, the relationship between the delay-differential analogues of the KdV, BSQ, and KP equations is clarified. Namely, reductions of the delay KP equation yield the delay KdV and delay BSQ equations.
We present an algorithm for determining the Lie point symmetries of differential equations on fixed non transforming lattices, i.e. equations involving both continuous and discrete independent variables. The symmetries of a specific integrable discretization of the Krichever-Novikov equation, the Toda lattice and Toda field theory are presented as examples of the general method.
We study integrable hierarchies associated with spectral problems of the form $Pψ=λQψ$ where $P,Q$ are difference operators. The corresponding nonlinear differential-difference equations can be viewed as inhomogeneous generalizations of the Bogoyavlensky type lattices. While the latter turn into the Korteweg--de Vries equation under the continuous limit, the lattices under consideration provide discrete analogs of the Sawada--Kotera and Kaup--Kupershmidt equations. The $r$-matrix formulation and several simplest explicit solutions are presented.
We propose a new method for solution of the integrability problem for evolutionary differential-difference equations of arbitrary order. It enables us to produce necessary integrability conditions, to determine whether a given equation is integrable or not, and to advance in classification of integrable equations. In this paper we define and develop symbolic representation for the difference polynomial ring, difference operators and formal series. In order to formulate necessary integrability conditions, we introduce a novel quasi-local extension of the difference ring. It enables us to progre…
We discuss aspects of the theory of non-invertible transformations which enter in the problem of classification of diffe\-ren\-tial-difference equations and, in particular, the notion of Miura type transformation. We introduce the concept of non--Miura type linearizable transformation and we present techniques which allow one to construct simple linearizable transformations and help us to solve the classification problem. This theory is illustrated by the example of a new integrable differential--difference equation depending on 5 lattice points, interesting from the viewpoint of the non-inver…
We present a novel differential-difference system in (2+1)-dimensional space-time (one discrete, two continuum), arisen from the Bogoyavlensky's (2+1)-dimensional KdV hierarchy. Our method is based on the bilinear identity of the hierarchy, which is related to the vertex operator representation of the toroidal Lie algebra $\sl_2^{tor}$.
The Hamiltonian representation for the hierarchy of Lax-type flows on a dual space to the Lie algebra of shift operators coupled with suitable eigenfunctions and adjoint eigenfunctions evolutions of associated spectral problems is found by means of a specially constructed Backlund transformation. The Hamiltonian description for the corresponding set of squared eigenfunction symmetry hierarchies is represented. The relation of these hierarchies with Lax integrable (2+1)-dimensional differential-difference systems and their triple Lax-type linearizations is analysed. The existence problem of a H…
This article complements recent results of the papers [J. Math. Phys. 41 (2000), 480; 45 (2004), 336] on the symmetry classification of second-order ordinary difference equations and meshes, as well as the Lagrangian formalism and Noether-type integration technique. It turned out that there exist nonlinear superposition principles for solutions of special second-order ordinary difference equations which possess Lie group symmetries. This superposition springs from the linearization of second-order ordinary difference equations by means of non-point transformations which act simultaneously on e…
The symmetry algebra of the differential--difference equation $$\dot u_n = [P(u_n)u_{n+1}u_{n-1} + Q(u_n)(u_{n+1}+u_{n-1})+ R(u_n)]/(u_{n+1}-u_{n-1}),$$ where $P$, $Q$ and $R$ are arbitrary analytic functions is shown to have the dimension $1 \le \mbox{dim}L \le 5$. When $P$, $Q$ and $R$ are specific second order polynomials in $u_n$ (depending on 6 constants) this is the integrable discretization of the Krichever--Novikov equation. We find 3 cases when the arbitrary functions are not polynomials and the symmetry algebra satisfies $\mbox{dim}L=2$. These cases are shown not to be integrable. Th…
Based on the direct linearisation framework of the discrete Kadomtsev-Petviashvili-type equations presented in [Proc. R. Soc. A, 473 (2017) 20160915], six novel nonautonomous differential-difference equations are established, including three in the AKP class, two in the BKP class and one in the CKP class. In particular, one in the BKP class and the one in the CKP class are both in (2+2)-dimensional form. All the six models are integrable in the sense of having the same linear integral equation representations as those of their associated discrete Kadomtsev-Petviashvili-type equations, which gu…
Algorithms for the symbolic computation of polynomial conservation laws, generalized symmetries, and recursion operators for systems of nonlinear differential-difference equations (DDEs) are presented. The algorithms can be used to test the complete integrability of nonlinear DDEs. The ubiquitous Toda lattice illustrates the steps of the algorithms, which have been implemented in {\em Mathematica}. The codes {\sc InvariantsSymmetries.m} and {\sc DDERecursionOperator.m} can aid researchers interested in properties of nonlinear DDEs.
In this article we discuss a series of models introduced by Barashenkov, Oxtoby and Pelinovsky to describe some discrete approximations to the ϕ^4 theory which preserve travelling kink solutions. We show, by applying the multiple scale test that they have some integrability properties as they pass the A_1 and A_2 conditions. However they are not integrable as they fail the A_3 conditions.
An algorithm for the symbolic computation of recursion operators for systems of nonlinear differential-difference equations (DDEs) is presented. Recursion operators allow one to generate an infinite sequence of generalized symmetries. The existence of a recursion operator therefore guarantees the complete integrability of the DDE. The algo-rithm is based in part on the concept of dilation invariance and uses our earlier algorithms for the symbolic computation of conservation laws and generalized symmetries. The algorithm has been applied to a number of well-known DDEs, including the Kac-van Mo…
