We consider the representation of primes as a sum of a prime and twice a triangular number. We prove that a subset of the primes having density 1 is expressible in this form. We conjecture that every odd prime number is expressible as a sum of a twin prime and twice a triangular number. We show that this conjecture implies the existence of infinitely many twin primes.
We show that a positive proportion of all gaps between consecutive primes are small gaps. We provide several quantitative results, some unconditional and some conditional, in this flavour.
We prove that the density of ramified primes in semisimple p-adic representations of Galois groups of number fields is 0. Ravi Ramakrishna has produced examples of such representations that are infinitely ramified.
A prime p is called Sophie Germain prime if 2p+1 is also prime. A formula for the density of such primes is given in a more general setting using a new approach. This method uses the Ramanujan-Fourier series for a modified von Mangoldt function. The proof remains heuristic as interchange of certain limits has not been justified. Experimental evidence using computer calculations is provided for the plausibility of the result.
The set of integers which can be written as the sum of four prime cubes has lower density at least $0.009664$. This improves earlier bounds of $0.003125$ by Ren and $0.005776$ by Liu.
In 1922 Hardy and Littlewood proposed a conjecture on the asymptotic density of admissible prime k-tuples. In 2011 Wolf computed the "Skewes number" for twin primes, i.e., the first prime at which a reversal of the Hardy-Littlewood inequality occurs. In this paper, we find "Skewes numbers" for 8 more prime k-tuples and provide numerical data in support of the Hardy-Littlewood conjecture. Moreover, we present several algorithms to compute such numbers.
For a given elliptic curve $E$ defined over the rationals, we study the density of primes $p$ satisfying $\mathrm{gcd}(\#E(\mathbb{F}_p),p-1)=1$ and give a conjectural value for this density with strong heuristic evidence for most elliptic curves, in an appropriate sense.
We prove that if A is a subset of the primes, and the lower density of A in the primes is larger than 5/8, then all sufficiently large odd positive integers can be written as the sum of three primes in A. The constant 5/8 in this statement is the best possible.
We prove that suitable asymptotic formulae in short intervals hold for the problems of representing an integer as a sum of a prime square and a square, or a prime square. Such results are obtained both assuming the Riemann Hypothesis and in the unconditional case.

Let a,f and g be integers, with a and f coprime. Under the generalized Riemann hypothesis it follows from work of Hooley and Lenstra that the set of primes p such that p=a(mod f) and g is primitive root mod p has a natural density. In this note we explicitly evaluate this density and give some applications of this result.
We estimate the asymptotic density of the set $\bar{A}$ of primes $p$ satisfying the constraint that $p+1$ and $p-1$ have only one prime divisor larger than $3$. We also estimate the density of a maximal subset $\bar{B} \subset \bar{A}$ such that for $p_1, p_2 \in \bar{B}$ no common prime divisor of $p_1(p_1 + 1)(p_1 - 1)$ and $p_2 (p_2 + 1)(p_2 - 1)$ is larger than $3$. Assuming a generalized Hardy--Littlewood conjecture, we prove that for both $\bar{A}$ and $\bar{B}$ the number of elements lesser than $x$ is asymptotically equal to a constant times $ x / (\log x)^3$.
Let $d \ge 3$ be an integer and let $P \in \mathbb{Z}[x]$ be a polynomial of degree $d$ whose Galois group is $S_d$. Let $(a_n)$ be a linearly recuresive sequence of integers which has $P$ as its characteristic polynomial. We prove, under the generalized Riemann hypothesis, that the lower density of the set of primes which divide at least one element of the sequence $(a_n)$ is positive.
Let P denote the set of all primes. Suppose that P_1, P_2, P_3 are three subsets of P with the sum of their lower densities relative to P is greater than 2. We prove that for sufficiently large odd integer n, there exist p_i\in P_i such that n=p_1+p_2+p_3.
Let F in S_k(Sp(2g, Z)) be a cuspidal Siegel eigenform of genus g with normalized Hecke eigenvalues mu_F(n). Suppose that the associated automorphic representation pi_F is locally tempered everywhere. For each c>0 we consider the set of primes p for which |mu_F(p)| >= c and we provide an explicit upper bound on the density of this set. In the case g=2, we also provide an explicit upper bound on the density of the set of primes p for which mu_F(p) >= c.
In this paper, we study the one level density of low-lying zeros of a family of quadratic Hecke $L$-functions to prime moduli over the Gaussian field under the generalized Riemann hypothesis (GRH) and the ratios conjecture. As a corollary, we deduce that at least $75 \%$ of the members of this family do not vanish at the central point under GRH.
Let $K/\mathbb{Q}$ be a number field. Let $π$ and $π^\prime$ be cuspidal automorphic representations of $\mathrm{GL}_d(\mathbb{A}_K)$ and $\mathrm{GL}_{d^\prime}(\mathbb{A}_K)$, and suppose that either both $d$ and $d'$ are at most 2 or at least one of $π$ and $π^\prime$ is self-dual. When $d=d^\prime=2$, we prove an unconditional and effective log-free zero density estimate for the Rankin-Selberg $L$-function $L(s,π\otimesπ^\prime,K)$. For other choices of $d$ and $d^\prime$, we obtain similar results assuming that either $π$ or $π^\prime$ satisfies the generalized Ramanujan conjecture. With …
Let $L$ be a finite Galois extension of the number field $K$. We unconditionally bound the least prime ideal of $K$ occurring in the Chebotarev Density Theorem as a power of the discriminant of $L$ with an explicit exponent. We also establish a quantitative Deuring-Heilbronn phenomenon for the Dedekind zeta function.
Let $F \in \mathbb{Z}[x_1, \ldots, x_n]$ be a homogeneous form of degree $d \geq 2$, and let $V_F^*$ denote the singular locus of the affine variety $V(F) = \{ \mathbf{z} \in {\mathbb{C}}^n: F(\mathbf{z}) = 0 \}$. In this paper, we prove the existence of integer solutions with prime coordinates to the equation $F(x_1, \ldots, x_n) = 0$ provided $F$ satisfies suitable local conditions and $n - \dim V_F^* \geq 2^8 3^4 5^2 d^3 (2d-1)^2 4^{d}$. Our result improves on what was known previously due to Cook and Magyar (B. Cook and A. Magyar, `Diophantine equations in the primes'. Invent. Math. 198 (2…
In this article, we prove a new bound for the least prime ideal in the Chebotarev density theorem, which improves the main theorem of Zaman [Funct. Approx. Comment. Math. 57 (2017), no.1, 115-142] by a factor of $5/2$. Our main improvement comes from a new version of Turán's power sum method. The key new idea is to use Harnack's inequality for harmonic functions to derive a superior lower bound for the generalised Fejér kernel.
The set of primes where a hypergeomeric series with rational parameters is $p$-adically bounded is known by [10] to have a Dirichlet density. We establish a formula for this Dirichlet density and conjecture that it is rare for the density to be large. We prove this conjecture for hypergeometric series whose parameters have denominators equal to a prime of the form $p = 2q^r + 1$, where $q$ is an odd prime, by establishing an upper bound on the density of bounded primes in this case. The general case remains open. This paper is the output of an undergraduate research course taught by the first …
Let $\mathcal{P}$ denote the set of all primes. $P_{1},P_{2},P_{3}$ are three subsets of $\mathcal{P}$. Let $\underlineδ(P_{i})$ $(i=1,2,3)$ denote the lower density of $P_{i}$ in $\mathcal{P}$, respectively. It is proved that if $\underlineδ(P_{1})>5/8$, $\underlineδ(P_{2})\geq5/8$, and $\underlineδ(P_{3})\geq5/8$, then for every sufficiently large odd integer n, there exist $p_{i} \in P_{i}$ such that $n=p_{1}+p_{2}+p_{3}$. The condition is the best possible.
A classical result in number theory is Dirichlet's theorem on the density of primes in an arithmetic progression. We prove a similar result for numbers with exactly k prime factors for k>1. Building upon a proof by E.M. Wright in 1954, we compute the natural density of such numbers where each prime satisfies a congruence condition. As an application, we obtain the density of squarefree n not greater than x with k prime factors such that a fixed quadratic equation has exactly 2^k solutions modulo n.
In this paper we show that if $A$ is a subset of Chen primes with positive relative density $α$, then $A+A$ must have positive upper density at least $cαe^{-c^\prime\log(1/α)^{2/3}(\log\log(1/α))^{1/3}}$ in the natural numbers.
In order to consider j-wise relative r-primality conditions that do not necessarily require all j-tuples of elements in a Dedekind domain to be relatively r-prime, we define the notion of j-wise relative r-primality with respect to a fixed j-uniform hypergraph H. This allows us to provide further generalisations to several results on natural densities not only for a ring of algebraic integers, but also for the ring F_q[x].
Let $P$ and $T$ be disjoint sets of prime numbers with $T$ finite. A simple formula is given for the natural density of the set of square-free numbers which are divisible by all of the primes in $T$ and by none of the primes in $P$. If $P$ is the set of primes congruent to $r$ modulo $m$ (where $m$ and $r$ are relatively prime numbers), then this natural density is shown to be $0$.
The Somos-5 sequence is defined by $a_{0} = a_{1} = a_{2} = a_{3} = a_{4} = 1$ and $a_{m} = \frac{a_{m-1} a_{m-4} + a_{m-2} a_{m-3}}{a_{m-5}}$ for $m \geq 5$. We relate the arithmetic of the Somos-5 sequence to the elliptic curve $E : y^{2} + xy = x^{3} + x^{2} - 2x$ and use properties of Galois representations attached to $E$ to prove the density of primes $p$ dividing some term in the Somos-5 sequence is equal to $\frac{5087}{10752}$.
We give an estimation of the existence density for the $2d$ different primes by using a new and simple algorithm for getting the $2d$ different primes. The algorithm is a kind of the sieve method, but the remainders are the central numbers between the $2d$ different primes. We may conclude that there exist infinitely many $2d$ different primes including the twin primes in case of $d=1$ because we can give the lower bounds of the existence density for the $2d$ different primes in this algorithm. We also discuss the Hardy-Littlewood conjecture and the Sophie Germain primes.
Let $K$ be a cyclic totally real number field of odd degree over $\mathbb{Q}$ with odd class number, such that every totally positive unit is the square of a unit, and such that $2$ is inert in $K/\mathbb{Q}$. We define a family of number fields $\{K(p)\}_p$, depending on $K$ and indexed by the rational primes $p$ that split completely in $K/\mathbb{Q}$, such that $p$ is always ramified in $K(p)$ of degree $2$. Conditional on a standard conjecture on short character sums, the density of such rational primes $p$ that exhibit one of two possible ramified factorizations in $K(p)/\mathbb{Q}$ is st…
We prove an explicit version of Weiss' bound on the least norm of a prime ideal in the Chebotarev density theorem, which is itself a significant improvement on the work of Lagarias, Montgomery, and Odlyzko. In order to accomplish this, we prove an explicit log-free zero density estimate and an explicit version of the zero-repulsion phenomenon for Hecke $L$-functions. As an application, we prove the first explicit nontrivial upper bound for the least prime represented by a positive-definite primitive binary quadratic form. We also present applications to the group of $\mathbb{F}_p$-rational poi…
We compute the density of the set of ordinary primes of an abelian surface over a number field in terms of the l-adic monodromy group. Using the classification of l-adic monodromy groups of abelian surfaces by Fite, Kedlaya, Rotger, and Sutherland, we show the density is 1, 1/2, or 1/4.
For K a cyclic cubic number field with odd class number containing a unit w such that Norm(w)=Norm(1-w)=-1, we prove that the density of rational primes p that satisfy the given spin relation is equal to 1/2. Furthermore, we prove that this density restricted to rational primes that are 1 mod 4 is 1/4 and this density restricted to rational primes that are -1 mod 4 is 3/4.
Let $\mathcal{A}$ denote a finite set of arithmetic progressions of positive integers and let $s \geq 2$ be an integer. If the cardinality of $\mathcal{A}$ is at least 2 and $U$ is the union formed by taking certain arithmetic progressions of length $s$ from each element of $\mathcal{A}$, we calculate the asymptotic density of the set of all prime numbers $p$ such that $U$ is a set of quadratic residues (respectively, quadratic non-residues) of $p$.
For integer a let us consider the sequence X_a={x_0,x_1,x_2,...} defined by x_0=a, x_1=1 and, for n>=1, x_{n+1}=x_n+x_{n-1}. We say that a prime p divides X_a if p divides at least one term of the sequence. It is easy to see that every prime p divides X_1, the sequence of Fibonacci numbers. Lagarias, using a technique involving the computation of degrees of various Kummerian extensions first employed by Hasse, showed in 1985 that X_2, the set of primes dividing some Lucas number has natural density 2/3 and posed as a challenge finding the density of prime divisors of X_3. In this paper we reso…
Let $L(s, π\timesπ^\prime)$ be the Rankin--Selberg $L$-function attached to automorphic representations $π$ and $π^\prime$. Let $\tildeπ$ and $\tildeπ^\prime$ denote the contragredient representations associated to $π$ and $π^\prime$. Under the assumption of certain upper bounds for coefficients of the logarithmic derivatives of $L(s, π\times\tildeπ)$ and $L(s, π^\prime\times\tildeπ^\prime)$, we prove a log-free zero-density estimate for $L(s, π\timesπ^\prime)$ which generalises a result due to Fogels in the context of Dirichlet $L$-functions. We then employ this log-free estimate in studying …
A monogenic polynomial $f$ is a monic irreducible polynomial with integer coefficients which produces a monogenic number field. For a given prime $q$, using the Chebotarev density theorem, we will show the density of primes $p$, such that $t^q-p$ is monogenic, is bigger or equal than $(q-1)/q$. We will also prove that, when $q=3$, the density of primes $p$, which $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt[3]{p})$ is non-monogenic, is at least 1/9.
We consider integer recurrences of the form a_n = f(a_{n-1}), where f is a quadratic polynomial with integer coefficients. We show, for four infinite families of f, that the set of primes dividing at least one term of such a sequence must have density zero, regardless of choice of a_0. The proof relies on tools from group theory and probability theory to develop a zero-density criterion in terms of arithmetic properties of the forward orbit of the critical point of f. This provides an analogy to results in real and complex dynamics, where analytic properties of the forward orbit of the critica…
Rubinstein and Sarnak have shown, conditional on the Riemann hypothesis (RH) and the linear independence hypothesis (LI) on the non-real zeros of $ζ(s)$, that the set of real numbers $x\ge2$ for which $π(x)>$ li$(x)$ has a logarithmic density, which they computed to be about $2.6\times10^{-7}$. A natural problem is to examine the actual primes in this race. We prove, assuming RH and LI, that the logarithmic density of the set of primes $p$ for which $π(p)>$ li$(p)$ relative to the prime numbers exists and is the same as the Rubinstein-Sarnak density. We also extend such results to a broad clas…
We establish an explicit bound for the least prime occurring in the Chebotarev density theorem without any restriction. Let $L/K$ be any Galois extension of number fields such that $L\not=\mathbb{Q}$, and let $C$ be a conjugacy class in the Galois group of $L/K$. We show that there exists an unramified prime $\mathfrak{p}$ of $K$ such that $σ_{\mathfrak{p}}=C$ and $N \mathfrak{p} \le d_{L}^{B}$ with $B= 310$. This improves the value $B=12\,577$ as proven by Ahn and Kwon. In comparison to previous works on the subject, we modify the weights to detect the least prime, and we use a new version of…
Lagarias, Montgomery, and Odlyzko proved that there exists an effectively computable absolute constant $A_1$ such that for every finite extension $K$ of ${\mathbb{Q}}$, every finite Galois extension $L$ of $K$ with Galois group $G$ and every conjugacy class $C$ of $G$, there exists a prime ideal $\mathfrak{p}$ of $K$ which is unramified in $L$, for which $\left[\frac{L/K}{\mathfrak{p}}\right]=C$, for which $N_{K/{\mathbb Q}}\,\mathfrak{p}$ is a rational prime, and which satisfies $N_{K/{\mathbb Q}}\,{\mathfrak{p}} \leq 2 {d_L}^{A_1}$. In this paper we show without any restriction that $N_{K/{\…
We use Vaughan's variation on Vinogradov's three-primes theorem to prove Zariski-density of prime points in several infinite families of hypersurfaces, including level sets of some quadratic forms, the Permanent polynomial, and the defining polynomials of some pre-homogeneous vector spaces. Three of these families are instances of a conjecture by Bourgain, Gamburd and Sarnak regarding prime points in orbits of simple algebraic groups. Our approach is based on the formulation of a general condition on the defining polynomial of a hypersurface, which suffices to guarantee that Zariski-density of…
We establish a lower bound of 2/p(p-1) for the asymptotic density of the Motzkin numbers divisible by a general prime number p > 3. We provide a criteria for when this asymptotic density is actually 1. We also provide a partial characterisation of those Motzkin numbers which are divisible by a prime p > 3. All results are obtained using the automata method of Rowland and Yassawi.
Let $(u_n)_{n \geq 0}$ be a nondegenerate linear recurrence of integers, and let $\mathcal{A}$ be the set of positive integers $n$ such that $u_n$ and $n$ are relatively prime. We prove that $\mathcal{A}$ has an asymptotic density, and that this density is positive unless $(u_n / n)_{n \geq 1}$ is a linear recurrence.
