The thermal metal to thermal insulator transition due to random disorder is studied in the context of the symmetries of the Bogoliubov de Gennes Hamiltonian. We focus on a three dimensional system with gapless s-wave pairing that possesses time reversal and spin rotational symmetry. The quasiparticle excitations (bogolons) undergo a metal insulator transition as the disorder increases. We determine the critical disorder strength and correlation exponent first by the transfer matrix method (TMM). We then apply a multifractal finite sized scaling (MFSS) of the bogolon wavefunction obtained from large scale diagonalization of the Hamiltonian and obtain the critical disorder strength and exponent, in agreement with those found by TMM.
The disordered XXZ model is a prototype model of the many-body localization transition (MBL). Despite numerous studies of this model, the available numerical evidence of multifractality of its eigenstates is not very conclusive due severe finite size effects. Moreover it is not clear if similarly to the case of single-particle physics, multifractal properties of the many-body eigenstates are related to anomalous transport, which is observed in this model. In this work, using a state-of-the-art, massively parallel, numerically exact method, we study systems of up to 24 spins and show that a lar…
Mesoscopic fluctuations of the local density of states encode multifractal correlations in disorderedelectron systems. We study fluctuations of the local density of states in a superconducting state of weakly disordered films. We perform numerical computations in the framework of the disordered attractive Hubbard model on two-dimensional square lattices. Our numerical results are explained by an analytical theory. The numerical data and the theory together form a coherent picture of multifractal correlations of local density of states in weakly disordered superconducting films.
We consider Dirac fermions interacting with a disordered non-Abelian vector potential. The exact solution is obtained through a special type of conformal field theory including logarithmic correlators, without resorting to the replica or supersymmetry approaches. It is shown that the proper treatment of the conformal theory leads to a different multifractal scaling behaviour than initially expected. Moreover, the previous replica solution is found to be incorrect at the level of higher correlation functions.
Using the well-known "algebra of multifractality", we derive the functional equation for anomalous dimensions Δ_q, whose solution Δ_q=aq(q-1) corresponds to strict parabolicity of the multifractal spectrum. This result demonstrates clearly that a correspondence of σ-models with the initial disordered systems is not exact.
An analysis of the electron localization properties in doped graphene is performed by doing a numerical multifractal analysis. By obtaining the singularity spectrum of a tight-binding model, it is found that the electron wave functions present a multifractal behavior. Such multifractality is preserved even for second neighbor interaction, which needs to be taken into account if a comparison is desired with experimental results. States close to the Dirac point have a wider multifractal character than those far from this point as the impurity concentration is increased. The analysis of the resul…
We present a nonperturbative calculation of all multifractal scaling exponents at strong disorder for critical wavefunctions of Dirac fermions interacting with a non-Abelian random vector potential in two dimensions. The results, valid for an arbitrary number of fermionic flavours, are obtained by deriving from Conformal Field Theory an effective Gaussian model for the wavefunction amplitudes and mapping to the thermodynamics of a single particle in a random potential. Our spectrum confirms that the wavefunctions remain delocalized in the presence of strong disorder.
Random multifractals occur in particular at critical points of disordered systems. For Anderson localization transitions, Mirlin and Evers [PRB 62,7920 (2000)] have proposed the following scenario (a) the Inverse Participation Ratios (I.P.R.) $Y_q(L)$ display the following fluctuations between the disordered samples of linear size $L$ : with respect to the typical value $Y^{typ}_q(L) = e^{\bar{\ln Y_q(L)}} \sim L^{- τ_{typ}(q)} $ that involve the typical multifractal spectrum $τ_{typ}(q)$, the rescaled variable $y=Y_q(L)/Y^{typ}_q(L) $ is distributed with a scale-invariant distribution present…
The wavefunctions of a disordered two-dimensional electron gas at the quantum-critical Anderson transition are predicted to exhibit multifractal scaling in their real space amplitude. We experimentally investigate the appearance of these characteristics in the spatially resolved local density of states of a two-dimensional mixed surface alloy Bi_xPb_{1-x}/Ag(111), by combining high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy with spin and angle-resolved inverse-photoemission experiments. Our detailed knowledge of the surface alloy electronic band structure, the exact lattice structure and the ato…
We report the results of the numerical study of the non-dissipative quantum Josephson junction chain with the focus on the statistics of many-body wave functions and local energy spectra. The disorder in this chain is due to the random offset charges. This chain is one of the simplest physical systems to study many-body localization. We show that the system may exhibit three distinct regimes: insulating, characterized by the full localization of many-body wavefunctions, fully delocalized (metallic) one characterized by the wavefunctions that take all the available phase volume and the intermed…
We report a transfer matrix study of the random bond $q-$state Potts model in the vicinity of the Ising model $q=2$. We draw attention to a precise determination of magnetic scaling dimensions in order to compare with perturbative results. Universality is checked by the computation of the spin-spin correlation function decay exponent obtained with different types of probability distributions of the coupling strengths. Our numerical data, compared to perturbative results for the second moment of the correlation function, obtained with both replica symmetry and replica symmetry breaking schemes,…
Off-diagonal disorder with random hopping between the sublattices of a bipartite lattice is described by a Hamiltonian which has chiral (sub-lattice) symmetry. The energy spectrum is symmetric around E=0 and for odd total number of lattice sites an isolated zero mode always exists, which coincides with the mobility edge of an Anderson transition in two dimensions(2D). In the chiral orthogonal symmetry class BDI we compute the fractal dimension $D_{2}$ of the zero mode for graphene samples with edges. In the absence of disorder $D_{2}=1$, which corresponds to a one-dimensional edge states, whil…
We review the time evolution of wavepackets at the metal-insulator transition in two- and three-dimensional disordered systems. The importance of scale invariance and multifractal eigenfunction fluctuations is stressed. The implications of the frequency- and wavevector-dependence of the diffusion coefficient are compared with the results of numerical simulations. We argue that network models are particularly suited for the investigation of the dynamics of disordered systems.
The field-driven magnetisation reversal processes in disordered systems exhibit a collective behaviour that is manifested in the scale-invariance of avalanches, closely related to underlying dynamical mechanisms. Using the multifractal time series analysis, we study the structure of fluctuations at different scales in the accompanying Barkhausen noise. The stochastic signal represents the magnetisation discontinuities along the hysteresis loop of a 3-dimensional random field Ising model simulated for varied disorder strength and driving rates. The analysis of the spectrum of the generalised Hu…
In contrast to finite dimensions where disordered systems display multifractal statistics only at criticality, the tree geometry induces multifractal statistics for disordered systems also off criticality. For the Anderson tight-binding localization model defined on a tree of branching ratio K=2 with $N$ generations, we consider the Miller-Derrida scattering geometry [J. Stat. Phys. 75, 357 (1994)], where an incoming wire is attached to the root of the tree, and where $K^{N}$ outcoming wires are attached to the leaves of the tree. In terms of the $K^{N}$ transmission amplitudes $t_j$, the tota…
The universality of the metal-insulator transition in three-dimensional disordered system is confirmed by numerical analysis of the scaling properties of the electronic wave functions. We prove that the critical exponent $ν$ and the multifractal dimensions $d_q$ are independent on the microscopic definition of the disorder and universal along the critical line which separates the metallic and the insulating regime.
Multifractal properties of wave functions in a disordered system can be derived from self-consistent theory of localization by Vollhardt and Woelfle. A diagrammatic interpretation of results allows to obtain all scaling relations used in numerical experiments. The arguments are given that the one-loop Wegner result for a space dimension d=2+εmay appear to be exact, so the multifractal spectrum is strictly parabolical. The σ-models are shown to be deficient at the four-loop level and the possible reasons of that are discussed. The extremely slow convergence to the thermodynamic limit is demonst…
We study generalized multifractality characterizing fluctuations and correlations of eigenstates in disordered systems of symmetry classes AII, D, and DIII. Both metallic phases and Andersonlocalization transitions are considered. By using the non-linear sigma-model approach, we construct pure-scaling eigenfunction observables. The construction is verified by numerical simulations of appropriate microscopic models, which also yield numerical values of the corresponding exponents. In the metallic phases, the numerically obtained exponents satisfy Weyl symmetry relations as well as generalized p…
It is well-known that disordered quantum magnets usually host localized elementary excitations in gapped phases. Here we show that long-range magnetodipolar interaction can lead to quasiparticles delocalization in the three-dimensional case, similarly to the phenomenon previously described for localized vibrational modes in disordered solids. Employing renormalization group-like ideas, the average eigenmode occupation number is found to scale with the system size, which also leads to sub-diffusive dynamical properties of the system.
We investigate the field-induced insulator-to-superfluid transition of bosonic quasiparticles in $S=1/2$ weakly-coupled dimer antiferromagnets. In presence of realistic disorder due to site dilution of the magnetic lattice, we show that the system displays an extended Bose-glass phase characterized by the localization of the hard-core quasiparticles.
We demonstrate that by considering disordered single-particle Hamiltonians (or their random matrix versions) on ultrametric spaces one can generate an interesting class of models exhibiting Anderson metal-insulator transition. We use the weak disorder virial expansion to determine the critical value of the parameters and to calculate the values of the multifractal exponents for inverse participation ratios. Direct numerical simulations agree favourably with the analytical predictions.
For Anderson Localization models with multifractal eigenvectors on disordered samples containing $N$ sites, we analyze in a unified framework the consequences for the statistical properties of the Green function. We focus in particular on the imaginary part of the Green function at coinciding points $G^I_{xx}(E-i η)$ and study the scaling with the size $N$ of the moments of arbitrary indices $q$ when the broadening follows the scaling $η=\frac{c}{N^δ}$. For the standard scaling regime $δ=1$, we find in the two limits $c \ll 1$ and $c \gg 1$ that the moments are governed by the anomalous expone…
The diagrammatic approach is applied to study quasiparticle transport properties in two-dimensional d-wave superconductors with dilute nonmagnetic impurities both in Born and in unitary limits. It is found that a novel quantum interference process gives rise to a weak-antilocalization correction to the spin conductivity, indicating the existence of extended low-energy quasiparticle states. With comimg close to unitarity and the nesting, this correction is suppressed and eventually vanishes due to the global particle-hole symmetry.
We study the quasiparticle transport coefficients in disordered d-wave superconductors. We find that spin and charge excitations are generally localized unless magnetic impurities are present. If the system is close to a nesting point in the impurity-scattering unitary limit, the tendency towards localization is reduced while the quasiparticle density of states gets enhanced by disorder. We also show that the residual repulsive interaction among quasiparticles has a delocalizing effect and increases the density of states.
The single-parameter scaling hypothesis predicts the absence of delocalized states for noninteracting quasiparticles in low-dimensional disordered systems. We show analytically and numerically that extended states may occur in the one- and two-dimensional Anderson model with a nonrandom hopping falling off as some power of the distance between sites. The different size scaling of the bare level spacing and the renormalized magnitude of the disorder seen by the quasiparticles finally results in the delocalization of states at one of the band edges of the quasiparticle energy spectrum. The deloc…
There is growing evidence, from experiments and numerical simulations, that a key feature of sufficiently disordered superconductors is the spatial inhomogeneity of the order parameter. However not much is known analytically about the details of its spatial distribution or the associated global critical temperature that signals the breaking of long-range order. Here we address this problem for disordered systems around an Anderson transition characterized by multifractal one-body eigenstates. In the limit of weak multifractality and for weakly coupled superconductors we compute the superconduc…
We show that quantum wavepackets exhibit a sharp macroscopic peak as they spread in the vicinity of the critical point of the Anderson transition. The peak gives a direct access to the mutifractal properties of the wavefunctions and specifically to the multifractal dimension $d\_2$. Our analysis is based on an experimentally realizable setup, the quantum kicked rotor with quasi-periodic temporal driving, an effectively 3-dimensional disordered system recently exploited to explore the physics of the Anderson transition with cold atoms.
A Weyl semimetal is a three dimensional topological gapless phase. In the presence of strong enough disorder it undergoes a quantum transition towards a diffusive metal phase whose universality class depends on the range of disorder correlations. Similar to other quantum transitions driven by disorder, the critical wave functions at the semimetal-diffusive metal transition exhibit multifractality. Using renormalization group methods we study the corresponding multifractal spectrum as a function of the range of disorder correlations for generic disorder including random scalar and vector potent…
We uncover field-theoretic underpinnings of symmetry relations for multifractal spectra at Anderson transitions and at critical points of other disordered systems. We show that such relations follow from the conformal invariance of the critical theory, which implies their general character. We also demonstrate that for the Anderson localization problem the entire probability distribution for the local density of states possesses a symmetry arising from the invariance of correlation functions of the underlying non-linear $σ$-model with respect to the Weyl group of the target space of the model.
For short-ranged disordered quantum models in one dimension, the Many-Body-Localization is analyzed via the adaptation to the Many-Body context [M. Serbyn, Z. Papic and D.A. Abanin, PRX 5, 041047 (2015)] of the Thouless point of view on the Anderson transition : the question is whether a local interaction between two long chains is able to reshuffle completely the eigenstates (Delocalized phase with a volume-law entanglement) or whether the hybridization between tensor states remains limited (Many-Body-Localized Phase with an area-law entanglement). The central object is thus the level of Hybr…
We investigate boundary multifractality of critical wave functions at the Anderson metal-insulator transition in two-dimensional disordered non-interacting electron systems with spin-orbit scattering. We show numerically that multifractal exponents at a corner with an opening angle θ=3π/2 are directly related to those near a straight boundary in the way dictated by conformal symmetry. This result extends our previous numerical results on corner multifractality obtained for θ< πto θ> π, and gives further supporting evidence for conformal invariance at criticality. We also propose a refinement o…
Random critical points are generically characterized by multifractal properties. In the field of Anderson localization, Mirlin, Fyodorov, Mildenberger and Evers [Phys. Rev. Lett 97, 046803 (2006)] have proposed that the singularity spectrum $f(α)$ of eigenfunctions satisfies the exact symmetry $f(2d-α)=f(α)+d-α$ at any Anderson transition. In the present paper, we analyse the physical origin of this symmetry in relation with the Gallavotti-Cohen fluctuation relations of large deviation functions that are well-known in the field of non-equilibrium dynamics: the multifractal spectrum of the diso…
An extensive numerical study is reported on disorder effect in two-dimensional d-wave superconductors with random impurities in the unitary limit. It is found that a sharp resonant peak shows up in the density of states at zero energy and correspondingly the finite-size spin conductance is strongly enhanced which results in a non-universal feature in one-parameter scaling. However, all quasiparticle states remain localized, indicating that the resonant density peak alone is not sufficient to induce delocalization. In the weak disorder limit, the localization length is so long that the spin con…
The system size dependence of the multifractal spectrum $f(α)$ and its singularity strength $α$ is investigated numerically. We focus on one-dimensional (1D) and 2D disordered systems with long-range random hopping amplitudes in both the strong and the weak disorder regime. At the macroscopic limit, it is shown that $f(α)$ is parabolic in the weak disorder regime. In the case of strong disorder, on the other hand, $f(α)$ strongly deviates from parabolicity. Within our numerical uncertainties it has been found that all corrections to the parabolic form vanish at some finite value of the couplin…
We consider critical eigenstates in a two dimensional quasicrystal and their evolution as a function of disorder. By exact diagonalization of finite size systems we show that the evolution of properties of a typical wave-function is non-monotonic. That is, disorder leads to states delocalizing, until a certain crossover disorder strength is attained, after which they start to localize. Although this non-monotonic behavior is only present in finite-size systems and vanishes in the thermodynamic limit, the crossover disorder strength decreases logarithmically slowly with system size, and is quit…
We propose to use the method introduced by Volchkov et al., based on state dependent disordered ultracold bosons, to address the critical state at the mobility edge of the Anderson localization transition, and to observe its intriguing multifractal structure. An optimally designed external radio frequency pulse can be applied to generate transitions to eigenstates in a narrow energy window close to the mobility edge, where critical scaling and multifractality emerge. Two-photon laser scanning microscopy will be used to address individual localized states even close to the transition. The proje…
A perturbation theory and a diagram technique for a disordered metal are proposed when scattering of quasiparticles by nonmagnetic impurities is caused with a retarded interaction. The perturbation theory generalizes a case of the elastic scattering in a disordered metal. Eliashberg equations for s-wave superconductivity are generalized for such a disordered superconductor. Anderson's theorem is found to be violated in the sense that embedding of the impurities into a s-wave superconductor increases its critical temperature. We showed the amplification of superconducting properties is a result…
Periodically driven, or Floquet, disordered quantum systems have generated many unexpected discoveries of late, such as the anomalous Floquet Anderson insulator and the discrete time crystal. Here, we report the emergence of an entire band of multifractal wavefunctions in a periodically driven chain of non-interacting particles subject to spatially quasiperiodic disorder. Remarkably, this multifractality is robust in that it does not require any fine-tuning of the model parameters, which sets it apart from the known multifractality of $critical$ wavefunctions. The multifractality arises as the…
The standard one-parameter scaling theory predicts that all eigenstates in two-dimensional random lattices are weakly localized. We show that this claim fails in two-dimensional dipolar Frenkel exciton systems. The linear energy dispersion at the top of the exciton band, originating from the long-range inter-site coupling of dipolar nature, yields the same size-scaling law for the level spacing and the effective disorder seen by the exciton. This finally results in the delocalization of those eigenstates in the thermodynamic limit. Large scale numerical simulations allow us to perform a detail…
We investigate numerically the quasiparticle density of states $\varrho(E)$ for a two-dimensional, disordered superconductor in which both time-reversal and spin-rotation symmetry are broken. As a generic single-particle description of this class of systems (symmetry class D), we use the Cho-Fisher version of the network model. This has three phases: a thermal insulator, a thermal metal, and a quantized thermal Hall conductor. In the thermal metal we find a logarithmic divergence in $\varrho(E)$ as $E\to 0$, as predicted from sigma model calculations. Finite size effects lead to superimposed o…
Disordered systems present multifractal properties at criticality. In particular, as discovered by Ludwig (A.W.W. Ludwig, Nucl. Phys. B 330, 639 (1990)) on the case of diluted two-dimensional Potts model, the moments $\bar{ρ^q(r)}$ of the local order parameter $ρ(r)$ scale with a set $x(q)$ of non-trivial exponents $x(q) \neq q x(1)$. In this paper, we revisit these ideas to incorporate more recent findings: (i) whenever a multifractal measure $w(r)$ normalized over space $ \sum_r w(r)=1$ occurs in a random system, it is crucial to distinguish between the typical values and the disorder averag…
We investigate the wave-packet dynamics of the power-law bond disordered one-dimensional Anderson model with hopping amplitudes decreasing as $H_{nm}\propto |n-m|^{-α}$. We consider the critical case ($α=1$). Using an exact diagonalization scheme on finite chains, we compute the participation moments of all stationary energy eigenstates as well as the spreading of an initially localized wave-packet. The eigenstates multifractality is characterized by the set of fractal dimensions of the participation moments. The wave-packet shows a diffusive-like spread developing a power-law tail and achieve…
Systems with the power-law quasiparticle dispersion $ε_{\bf k}\propto k^α$ exhibit non-Anderson disorder-driven transitions in dimensions $d>2α$, as exemplified by Weyl semimetals, 1D and 2D arrays of ultracold ions with long-range interactions, quantum kicked rotors and semiconductor models in high dimensions. We study the wavefunction structure in such systems and demonstrate that at these transitions they exhibit fractal behaviour with an infinite set of multifractal exponents. The multifractality persists even when the wavefunction localisation is forbidden by symmetry or topology and occu…
Quantum multifractality is a fundamental property of systems such as non-interacting disordered systems at an Anderson transition and many-body systems in Hilbert space. Here we discuss the origin of the presence or absence of a fundamental symmetry related to this property. The anomalous multifractal dimension $Δ_q$ is used to characterize the structure of quantum states in such systems. Although the multifractal symmetry relation \mbox{$Δ_q=Δ_{1-q}$} is universally fulfilled in many known systems, recently some important examples have emerged where it does not hold. We show that this is the …
Finite-size effects have been a major and justifiable source of concern for studies of many-body localization, and several works have been dedicated to the subject. In this paper, however, we discuss yet another crucial problem that has received much less attention, that of the lack of self-averaging and the consequent danger of reducing the number of random realizations as the system size increases. By taking this into account and considering ensembles with a large number of samples for all system sizes analyzed, we find that the generalized dimensions of the eigenstates of the disordered Hei…
We study the interaction driven localization transition, which a recent experiment in Ga_{1-x}Mn_xAs As has shown to come along with multifractal behavior of the local density of states (LDoS) and the intriguing persistence of critical correlations close to the Fermi level. We show that the bulk of these phenomena can be understood within a Hartree-Fock treatment of disordered, Coulomb-interacting spinless fermions. A scaling analysis of the LDoS correlation demonstrates multifractality with correlation dimension d_2=1.57, which is significantly larger than at a non-interacting Anderson transi…
We investigate a disordered two-dimensional lattice model for noninteracting electrons with long-range power-law transfer terms and apply the method of level statistics for the calculation of the critical properties. The eigenvalues used are obtained numerically by direct diagonalization. We find a metal-insulator transition for a system with orthogonal symmetry. The exponent governing the divergence of the correlation length at the transition is extracted from a finite size scaling analysis and found to be $ν=2.6\pm 0.15$. The critical eigenstates are also analyzed and the distribution of the…
We numerically investigate critically delocalized wavefunctions in models of 2D Dirac fermions, subject to vector potential disorder. These describe the surface states of 3D topological superconductors, and can also be realized through long-range correlated bond randomness in artificial materials like molecular graphene. A frozen regime can occur for strong disorder in these systems, wherein a single wavefunction presents a few localized peaks separated by macroscopic distances. Despite this rarefied spatial structure, we find robust correlations between eigenstates at different energies, at b…
Thermal and many-body localized phases are separated by a dynamical phase transition of a new kind. We analyze the distribution of off-diagonal matrix elements of local operators across the many-body localization transition (MBLT) in a disordered spin chain, and use it to characterize the breakdown of the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis and to extract the many-body Thouless energy. We find a wide critical region around the MBLT, where Thouless energy becomes smaller than the level spacing, while matrix elements show critical dependence on the energy difference. In the same region, matrix …
The disordered Bose-Hubbard model in two dimensions at non-integer filling admits a superfluid to Bose-glass transition at weak disorder. Less understood are the properties of this system at strong disorder and energy densities corresponding to excited states. In this work we study the Bose-glass transition of the ground state and the related finite energy localization transition, the mobility edge of the quasiparticle spectrum, a critical energy separating extended from localized quasiparticle excitations. To study these the fluctuation operator expansion is used. The level spacing statistics…
We consider disordered tight-binding models which Green's functions obey the self-consistent cavity equations . Based on these equations and the replica representation, we derive an analytical expression for the fractal dimension D_{1} that distinguishes between the extended ergodic, D_{1}=1, and extended non-ergodic (multifractal), 0<D_{1}<1 states. The latter corresponds to the solution with broken replica symmetry, while the former corresponds to the replica-symmetric solution. We prove the existence of the extended non-ergodic phase in a broad range of disorder strength and energy as well …
We show that arbitrarily weak interparticle interactions destabilize the surface states of 3D topological superconductors with spin SU(2) invariance (symmetry class CI), in the presence of non-magnetic disorder. The conduit for the instability is disorder-induced wavefunction multifractality. We argue that time-reversal symmetry breaks spontaneously at the surface, so that topologically-protected states do not exist for this class. The interaction-stabilized surface phase is expected to exhibit ferromagnetic order, or to reside in an insulating plateau of the spin quantum Hall effect.
Describing the critical behavior of the Anderson transition in infinite dimension by random-matrix ensembles: logarithmic multifractality and critical localization
