We are concerned with the inverse scattering problem of extracting the geometric structures of an unknown/inaccessible inhomogeneous medium by using the corresponding acoustic far-field measurement. Using the intrinsic geometric properties of the so-called interior transmission eigenfunctions, we develop a novel inverse scattering scheme. The proposed method can efficiently capture the cusp singularities of the support of the inhomogeneous medium. If further a priori information is available on the support of the medium, say, it is a convex polyhedron, then one can actually recover its shape. Both theoretical analysis and numerical experiments are provided. Our reconstruction method is new to the literature and opens up a new direction in the study of inverse scattering problems.
We study the discretization of a Dirichlet form on the Koch snowflake domain and its boundary with the property that both the interior and the boundary can support positive energy. We compute eigenvalues and eigenfunctions, and demonstrate the localization of high energy eigenfunctions on the boundary via a modification of an argument of Filoche and Mayboroda. Hölder continuity and uniform approximation of eigenfunctions are also discussed.
We investigate the geometric properties of Steklov eigenfunctions in smooth manifolds. We derive the refined doubling estimates and Bernstein's inequalities. For the real analytic manifolds, we are able to obtain the sharp upper bound for the measure of interior nodal sets.
This paper is devoted to interior, i.e. away from the boundary, estimates for eigenfunctions of the fractional Laplacian in an Euclidean domain of $\mathbb R^d$.
Let $ Ω\subset R^2$ be a bounded piecewise smooth domain and $ϕ_λ$ be a Neumann (or Dirichlet) eigenfunction with eigenvalue $λ^2$ and nodal set ${ N}_{ϕ_λ} = {x \in Ω; ϕ_λ(x) = 0}.$ Let $H \subset Ω$ be an interior $C^ω$ curve. Consider the intersection number $$ n(λ,H):= \# (H \cap N_{ϕ_λ} ).$$ We first prove that for general piecewise-analytic domains, and under an appropriate "goodness" condition on $H$, $$ n(λ,H) = {\mathcal O}_H(λ) (*)$$ as $λ\rightarrow \infty.$ We then prove that the bound in $(*)$ is satisfied in the case of quantum ergodic (QE) sequences of interior eigenfunctions, p…
We study the interior nodal sets, $Z_λ$ of Steklov eigenfunctions in an $n$-dimensional relatively compact manifolds $M$ with boundary and show that one has the lower bounds $|Z_λ|\ge cλ^{\frac{2-n}2}$ for the size of its $(n-1)$-dimensional Hausdorff measure. The proof is based on a Dong-type identity and estimates for the gradient of Steklov eigenfunctions, similar to those in \cite{SZ1} and \cite{SZ2}, respectively.
We investigate the interior nodal sets $\mathcal{N}_λ$ of Steklov eigenfunctions on connected and compact surfaces with boundary. The optimal vanishing order of Steklov eigenfunctions is shown be $Cλ$. The singular sets $\mathcal{S}_λ$ are finite points on the nodal sets. We are able to prove that the Hausdorff measure $H^0(\mathcal{S}_λ)\leq Cλ^2$. Furthermore, we obtain an upper bound for the measure of interior nodal sets $H^1(\mathcal{N}_λ)\leq Cλ^{\frac{3}{2}}$. Here those positive constants $C$ depend only on the surfaces.
In this paper, we consider the transmission eigenvalue problem associated with a general conductive transmission condition and study the geometric structures of the transmission eigenfunctions. We prove that under a mild regularity condition in terms of the Herglotz approximations of one of the pair of the transmission eigenfunctions, the eigenfunctions must be vanishing around a corner on the boundary. The Herglotz approximation can be regarded as the Fourier transform of the transmission eigenfunction in terms of the plane waves, and the growth rate of the transformed function can be used to…
This paper is concerned with the intrinsic geometric structures of conductive transmission eigenfunctions. The geometric properties of interior transmission eigenfunctions were first studied in [9]. It is shown in two scenarios that the interior transmission eigenfunction must be locally vanishing near a corner of the domain with an interior angle less than $π$. We significantly extend and generalize those results in several aspects. First, we consider the conductive transmission eigenfunctions which include the interior transmission eigenfunctions as a special case. The geometric structures e…
We build a one-parameter family of S^{1}-invariant metrics on the unit disc with fixed total area for which the second eigenvalue of the Laplace operator in the case of both Neumann and Dirichlet boundary conditions is simple and has an eigenfunction with a closed nodal line. In the case of Neumann boundary conditions, we also prove that this eigenfunction attains its maximum at an interior point, and thus provide a counterexample to the hot spots conjecture on a simply connected surface. This is a consequence of the stronger result that within this family of metrics any given (finite) number …
We prove a quantum ergodic restriction theorem for the Cauchy data of a sequence of quantum ergodic eigenfunctions on a hypersurface $H$ of a Riemannian manifold $(M, g)$. The technique of proof is to use a Rellich type identity to relate quantum ergodicity of Cauchy data on $H$ to quantum ergodicity of eigenfunctions on the global manifold $M$. This has the interesting consequence that if the eigenfunctions are quantum unique ergodic on the global manifold $M$, then the Cauchy data is automatically quantum unique ergodic on $H$ with respect to operators whose symbols vanish to order one on th…
Consider the transmission eigenvalue problem for $u \in H^1(Ω)$ and $v\in H^1(Ω)$ associated with $(Ω; σ, \mathbf{n}^2)$, where $Ω$ is a ball in $\mathbb{R}^N$, $N=2,3$. If $σ$ and $\mathbf{n}$ are both radially symmetric, namely they are functions of the radial parameter $r$ only, we show that there exists a sequence of transmission eigenfunctions $\{u_m, v_m\}_{m\in\mathbb{N}}$ associated with $k_m\rightarrow+\infty$ as $m\rightarrow+\infty$ such that the $L^2$-energies of $v_m$'s are concentrated around $\partialΩ$. If $σ$ and $\mathbf{n}$ are both constant, we show the existence of transmi…
In this paper, we study an inverse problem of determining the cross section of an infinitely long cylindrical-like material structure from the transverse electromagnetic scattering measurement. We establish a sharp logarithmic stability result in determining a polygonal scatterer by a single far-field measurement. The argument in establishing the stability result is localized around a corner and can be as well used to produce two highly intriguing implications for invisibility and transmission resonance in the wave scattering theory. In fact, we show that if a generic medium scatterer possesse…
Transmission eigenfunctions are certain interior resonant modes that are of central importance to the wave scattering theory. In this paper, we present the discovery of novel global rigidity properties of the transmission eigenfunctions associated with the Maxwell system. It is shown that the transmission eigenfunctions carry the geometrical and topological information of the underlying domain. We present both analytical and numerical results of these intriguing rigidity properties. As an interesting application, we propose an illusion scheme of artificially generating a mirage image of any gi…
We present a comprehensive study of new discoveries on the spectral patterns of elastic transmission eigenfunctions, including boundary localisation, surface resonance, and stress concentration. In the case where the domain is radial and the underlying parameters are constant, we give rigorous justifications and derive a thorough understanding of those intriguing geometric and physical patterns. We also present numerical examples to verify that the same results hold in general geometric and parameter setups.
In this addendum, we relax a restrictive assumption in [1] needed for the interior transmission eigenfunctions to hold the intrinsic geometric vanishing property in a corner. In addition we present in more detail another assumption which can also guarantee the vanishing property, namely being locally $H^2$ near the corner. This was mentioned briefly in [1].
The (interior) transmission eigenvalue problems are a type of non-elliptic, non-selfadjoint and nonlinear spectral problems that arise in the theory of wave scattering. They connect to the direct and inverse scattering problems in many aspects in a delicate way. The properties of the transmission eigenvalues have been extensively and intensively studied over the years, whereas the intrinsic properties of the transmission eigenfunctions are much less studied. Recently, in a series of papers, several intriguing local and global geometric structures of the transmission eigenfunctions are discover…
In this note, we present some interesting observations on the Schiffer's conjecture, interior transmission eigenvalue problem and their connections to singular and nonsingular invisibility cloaking problems of acoustic waves.
Cakoni and Nguyen recently proposed very general conditions on the coefficients of Maxwell equations for which they established the discreteness of the set of eigenvalues of the transmission problem and studied their locations. In this paper, we establish the completeness of the generalized eigenfunctions and derive an optimal upper bound for the counting function under these conditions, assuming additionally that the coefficients are twice continuously differentiable. The approach is based on the spectral theory of Hilbert-Schmidt operators.
The paper contains lower bounds on the counting function of the positive eigenvalues of the interior transmission problem when the latter is elliptic. In particular, these bounds justify the existence of an infinite set of interior transmission eigenvalues and provide asymptotic estimates from above on the counting function for the large values of the wave number. They also lead to certain important upper estimates on the first few interior transmission eigenvalues. We consider the classical transmission problem as well as the case when the inhomogeneous medium contains an obstacle.
We construct a multiply connected domain in $\mathbb{R}^2$ for which the second eigenfunction of the Laplacian with Robin boundary conditions has an interior nodal line. In the process, we adapt a bound of Donnelly-Fefferman type to obtain a uniform estimate on the size of the nodal sets of a sequence of solutions to a certain class of elliptic equations in the interior of a sequence of domains, which does not depend directly on any boundary behaviour. This also gives a new proof of the nodal line property of the example in the Dirichlet case.
We study the high-frequency behavior of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map for an arbitrary compact Riemannian manifold with a non-empty smooth boundary. We show that far from the real axis it can be approximated by a simpler operator. We use this fact to get new results concerning the location of the transmission eigenvalues on the complex plane. In some cases we obtain optimal transmission eigenvalue-free regions.
This paper is concerned with the inverse electromagnetic scattering problem for anisotropic media. We use the interior resonant modes to develop an inverse scattering scheme for imaging the scatterer. The whole procedure consists of three phases. First, we determine the interior Maxwell transmission eigenvalues of the scatterer from a family of far-field data by the mechanism of the linear sampling method. Next, we determine the corresponding transmission eigenfunctions by solving a constrained optimization problem. Finally, based on both global and local geometric properties of the transmissi…
The transmission eigenvalue problem is a system of two second-order elliptic equations of two unknowns equipped with the Cauchy data on the boundary. In this work, we establish the Weyl law for the eigenvalues and the completeness of the generalized eigenfunctions for a system without complementing conditions, i.e., the two equations of the system have the same coefficients for the second order terms, and thus being degenerate. These coefficients are allowed to be anisotropic and are assumed to be of class $C^2$. One of the keys of the analysis is to establish the well-posedness and the regula…
We obtain parabolic transmission eigenvalue-free regions for both isotropic andanisotropic interior transmission problems with coefficients which are Lipschitznear the boundary
The transmission problem is a system of two second-order elliptic equations of two unknowns equipped with the Cauchy data on the boundary. After four decades of research motivated by scattering theory, the spectral properties of this problem are now known to depend on a type of contrast between coefficients near the boundary. Previously, we established the discreteness of eigenvalues for a large class of anisotropic coefficients which is related to the celebrated complementing conditions due to Agmon, Douglis, and Nirenberg. In this work, we establish the Weyl law for the eigenvalues and the c…
We consider the inverse source problem of a fixed wavenumber: study properties of an acoustic source based on a single far- or near-field measurement. We show that nonradiating sources having a convex or non-convex corner or edge on their boundary must vanish there. The same holds true for smooth enough transmission eigenfunctions. The proof is based on an energy identity from the enclosure method and the construction of a new type of planar complex geometrical optics solution whose logarithm is a branch of the square root. The latter allows us to deal with non-convex corners and edges.
The paper concerns the discreteness of the eigenvalues and the solvability of the interior transmission problem for anisotropic media. Conditions for the ellipticity of the problem are written explicitly, and it is shown that they do not guarantee the discreteness of the eigenvalues. Some simple sufficient conditions for the discreteness and solvability are found. They are expressed in terms of the values of the anisotropy matrix and the refraction index at the boundary of the domain. The discreteness of the eigenvalues and the solvability of the interior transmission problem are shown if a sm…
This paper contains a lower bound of the Weyl type on the counting function of the positive eigenvalues of the interior transmission eigenvalue problem which justifies the existence of an infinite set of positive interior transmission eigenvalues. We consider the classical transmission problem as well as the case where the inhomogeneous medium contains an obstacle. One of the essential components of the proof is an estimate for the D-t-N operator for the Helmholtz equation for positive $λ$ that replaces the standard parameter-elliptic estimate valid outside of the positive semi-axis.
We use probabilistic tools based on Brownian motion and Feynman-Kac formulae to investigate the heat profile for the ground state Dirichlet and second Neumann eigenfunctions. Among other topics, we comment on supremum norm bounds for ground state Dirichlet eigenfunctions and look at the corresponding Neumann problem, namely the comparison of maximum temperatures on the interior and the boundary, the latter being partially motivated by the hot spots problem. We also investigate the proximity/distance of level sets of ground state Dirichlet eigenfunctions, some with analogous statements for Neum…
Let $Ω$ be a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\geq 2$, and $V\in L^\infty(Ω)$ be a potential function. Consider the following transmission eigenvalue problem for nontrivial $v, w\in L^2(Ω)$ and $k\in\mathbb{R}_+$, \[(Δ+k^2)v= 0 \quad \text{in } Ω,\] \[(Δ+k^2(1+V))w= 0 \quad \text{in } Ω,\] \[w-v \in H^2_0(Ω), \quad \lVert v \rVert_{L^2(Ω)}=1. \] We show that the transmission eigenfunctions $v$ and $w$ carry the geometric information of $\mathrm{supp}(V)$. Indeed, it is proved that $v$ and $w$ vanish near a corner point on $\partial Ω$ in a generic situation where the corner possesses an int…
We study the localization of the interior transmission eigenvalues (ITEs) in the case when the domain is the unit ball $\{x \in {\mathbb R}^d:\: |x| \leq 1\}, \: d\geq 2,$ and the coefficients $c_j(x), \: j =1,2,$ and the indices of refraction $n_j(x), \: j =1,2,$ are constants near the boundary $|x| = 1$. We prove that in this case the eigenvalue-free region obtained in [16] for strictly concave domains can be significantly improved. In particular, if $c_j(x), n_j(x), j = 1,2$ are constants for $|x| \leq 1$, we show that all (ITEs) lie in a strip $\{ λ\in {\mathbb C}:\:|{\rm Im}\: λ| \leq C\}…
This paper is concerned with the invisibility cloaking in acoustic wave scattering from a new perspective. We are especially interested in achieving the invisibility cloaking by completely regular and isotropic mediums. It is shown that an interior transmission eigenvalue problem arises in our study, which is the one considered theoretically in \cite{CCH}. Based on such an observation, we propose a cloaking scheme that takes a three-layer structure including a cloaked region, a lossy layer and a cloaking shell. The target medium in the cloaked region can be arbitrary but regular, whereas the m…
Consider the nonlinear and completely continuous scattering map \[ \mathcal{S}\big((Ω; λ, μ, V), \mathbf{u}^i\big)=\mathbf{u}_t^\infty(\hat{\mathbf{x}}), \quad \hat{\mathbf{x}}\in\mathbb{S}^{n-1}, \] which sends an inhomogeneous elastic scatterer $(Ω; λ, μ, V)$ to its far-field pattern $\mathbf{u}_t^\infty$ due to an incident wave field $\mathbf{u}^i$ via the Lamé system. Here, $(λ, μ, V)$ signifies the medium configuration of an elastic scatterer that is compactly supported in $Ω$. In this paper, we are concerned with the intrinsic geometric structure of the kernel space of $\mathcal{S}$, whi…
We consider several intriguingly connected topics in the theory of wave propagation: geometrical characterizations of radiationless sources, non-radiating incident waves, interior transmission eigenfunctions, and their applications to inverse scattering. Our major novel discovery is a localization and geometrization property. We first show that a scatterer, which might be an active source or an inhomogeneous index of refraction, cannot be completely invisible if its support is small compared to the wavelength and scattering intensity. Next, we localize and geometrize the "smallness" results to…
In this paper we give results on the counting function associated with the interior transmission eigenvalues. For a complex refraction index we estimate of the counting function by Ctn. In the case where the refraction index is positive we give an equivalent of the counting function.
Consider the interior transmission problem arising in inverse boundary value problems for the diffusion equation with discontinuous diffusion coefficients. We prove the unique solvability of the interior transmission problem by constructing its Green function. First, we construct a local parametrix for the interior transmission problem near the boundary in the Laplace domain, by using the theory of pseudo-differential operators with a large parameter. Second, by carefully analyzing the analyticity of the local parametrix in the Laplace domain and estimating it there, a local parametrix for the…
In this paper, we investigate the interior transmission eigenvalue problem for an inhomogeneous media with conductive boundary conditions. We prove the discreteness and existence of the transmission eigenvalues. We also investigate the inverse spectral problem of gaining information about the material properties from the transmission eigenvalues. In particular, we prove that the first transmission eigenvalue is a monotonic function of the refractive index and boundary conductivity parameter eta, and obtain a uniqueness result for constant coefficients. We provide some numerical examples to dem…
For the complex interior transmission eigenvalues (ITE) we study for small $θ> 0$ the counting function $$N(θ, r) = #\{λ\in \C:\: λ\: {\rm is} \: {\rm (ITE)},\: |λ| \leq r, \: 0 \leq \arg λ\leq θ\}.$$ We obtain for fixed $θ> 0$ an upper bound $N(θ, r) \leq C r^{n/2}, \: r \geq r(θ).$
We consider the interior transmission eigenvalue (ITE) problem, which arises when scattering by inhomogeneous media is studied. The ITE problem is not self-adjoint. We show that positive ITEs are observable together with plus or minus signs that are defined by the direction of motion of the corresponding eigenvalues of the scattering matrix (when the latter approach {\bf$z=1$)}. We obtain a Weyl type formula for the counting function of positive ITEs, which are taken together with ascribed signs.
Given a set of transmission eigenvalues, we describe the connection of such a set to the indicator functions in entire function theory. The indicator functions control the asymptotic growth rate of the solution of the Sturm-Liouville problem which has an uniqueness in the inverse spectral theory. Henceforth, the set of transmission eigenvalues has an inverse spectral property.
The paper concerns the isotropic interior transmission eigenvalue (ITE) problem. This problem is not elliptic, but we show that, using the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map, it can be reduced to an elliptic one. This leads to the discreteness of the spectrum as well as to certain results on possible location of the transmission eigenvalues. If the index of refraction $\sqrt{n(x)}$ is real, we get a result on the existence of infinitely many positive ITEs and the Weyl type lower bound on its counting function. All the results are obtained under the assumption that $n(x)-1$ does not vanish at the boundar…
In this paper, we present a Spectral-Galerkin Method to approximate the zero-index transmission eigenvalues with a conductive boundary condition. This is a new eigenvalue problem derived from the scalar inverse scattering problem for an isotropic media with a conductive boundary condition. In our analysis, we will consider the equivalent fourth-order eigenvalue problem where we establish the convergence when the approximation space is the span of finitely many Dirichlet eigenfunctions for the Laplacian. We establish the convergence rate of the spectral approximation by appealing to Weyl's law.…
We study an inverse uniqueness with a knowledge of spectral data in the interior transmission problem defined by an index of refraction in a simple domain. We expand the solution in such a domain into a series of one dimensional problems. For each one dimensional problem, we apply a value distribution theory in complex analysis to describe the eigenvalues of the system. By the orthogonality of the one dimensional system, we consider the uniqueness on the perturbation along each given incident angle.
We construct a specific family of eigenfunctions for a Laplace operator with coefficients having a jump across an interface. These eigenfunctions have an exponential concentration arbitrarily close to the interface, and therefore could be considered as whispering gallery modes. The proof is based on an appropriate Agmon estimate. We deduce as a corollary that the quantitative unique continuation result for waves propagating in singular media proved by the author in [Fil22] is optimal.
We present the discovery of a novel and intriguing global geometric structure of the (interior) transmission eigenfunctions associated with the Helmholtz system. It is shown in generic scenarios that there always exists a sequence of transmission eigenfunctions with the corresponding eigenvalues going to infinity such that those eigenfunctions are localized around the boundary of the domain. We provide a comprehensive and rigorous justification in the case within the radial geometry, whereas for the non-radial case, we conduct extensive numerical experiments to quantitatively verify the locali…
Given a set of transmission eigenvalues, its density function inversely determines the form of the indicator function. This is one application of the Cartwright's theory in inverse problems. We use the indicator function inversely to determine the form of the functional determinant d(z). Such an asymptotic expansion is uniquely determined while considered in constant absorbing medium.
The spectrum of interior transmission problem is the zero set of certain entire functional determinant. It is classic that we deploy the series of exponential polynomials to approximate the distribution of the roots of the entire functions of exponential type. We construct an exponential system in the form of $\{e^{ik_jr}\}$ according to the set of interior transmission eigenvalues $\{k_{j}\}$. The eigenvalues are the zeros of a sine-type function. In particular, they are intersection points of two asymptotically periodic entire functions. The intersection set is asymptotically sine-like near …
Quantum ergodic restriction (QER) is the problem of finding conditions on a hypersurface $H$ so that restrictions $ϕ_j |_H$ to $H$ of $Δ$-eigenfunctions of Riemannian manifolds $(M, g)$ with ergodic geodesic flow are quantum ergodic on $H$. We prove two kinds of results: First (i) for any smooth hypersurface $H$, the Cauchy data $(ϕ_j|H, \partial ϕ_j|H)$ is quantum ergodic if the Dirichlet and Neumann data are weighted appropriately. Secondly (ii) we give conditions on $H$ so that the Dirichlet (or Neumann) data is individually quantum ergodic. The condition involves the almost nowhere equalit…
In this paper we consider the transmission eigenvalue problem for Maxwell's equations corresponding to non-magnetic inhomogeneities with contrast in electric permittivity that has fixed sign (only) in a neighborhood of the boundary. We study this problem in the framework of semiclassical analysis and relate the transmission eigenvalues to the spectrum of a Hilbert-Schmidt operator. Under the additional assumption that the contrast is constant in a neighborhood of the boundary, we prove that the set of transmission eigenvalues is discrete, infinite and without finite accumulation points. A noti…
In this paper we prove some results on interior transmission eigenvalues. First, under rea- sonable assumptions, we prove that the spectrum is a discrete countable set and the generalized eigenfunctions spanned a dense space in the range of resolvent. This is a consequence of spectral theory of Hilbert-Schmidt operators. The main ingredient is to prove a smoothing property of resolvent. This allows to prove that a power of the resolvent is Hilbert-Schmidt. We obtain an estimate of the number of eigenvalues, counting with multiplicities, with modulus less than t2 when t is large. We prove also …
We consider the interior transmission problem associated with the scattering by an inhomogeneous (possibly anisotropic) highly oscillating periodic media. We show that, under appropriate assumptions, the solution of the interior transmission problem converges to the solution of a homogenized problem as the period goes to zero. Furthermore, we prove that the associated real transmission eigenvalues converge to transmission eigenvalues of the homogenized problem. Finally we show how to use the first transmission eigenvalue of the period media, which is measurable from the scattering data, to obt…
