We investigate the structural and magnetic properties of Mn$_{2}$FeGa for different phases(cubic, hexagonal and tetragonal) reported experimentally using density functional theory. The relative structural stabilities, and the possible phase transformation mechanisms are discussed using results for total energy, electronic structure and elastic constants. We find that the phase transformation form hexagonal to ground state tetragonal structure would take place through a Heusler-like phase which has a pronounced electronic instability. The electronic structures, the elastic constants and the supplementary phonon dispersions indicate that the transition from the Heusler-like to the tetragonal phase is of pure Jahn-Teller origin. We also describe the ground state magentic structures in each phase by computations of the exchange interactions. For Heusler-like and tetragonal phases, the ferromagnetic exchange interactions associated with the Fe atoms balance the dominating antiferromagnetic interactions between the Mn atoms leading to collinear magnetic structures. In the hexagonal phase, the direction of atomic moment are completely in the planes with a collinear like structure, in stark contrast to the well known non-collinear magnetic structure in the hexagonal phase of Mn$_{3}$Ga, another material with similar structural properties. The overwhelmingly large exchange interactions of Fe with other magnetic atoms destroy the possibility of magnetic frustration in the hexagonal phase of Mn$_{2}$FeGa. This comprehensive study provides significant insights into the microscopic physics associated with the structural and magnetic orders in this compound.
First principles calculation supports the occurence of a phonon anomaly along [211] in Ni$_2$FeGa that was observed experimentally for the first time as structural modulations along [211] direction. Fermi surface scans have been performed in both austenite and martensite phase to observe the possible Fermi nesting features in the system. The magnitude of observed Fermi surface nesting vectors in (211) plane exactly match the phonon anomaly wavevectors along [211] direction. Electron-phonon calculations in the austenite phase shows that there is significant electron-phonon coupling in the syste…
We report the structural, transport, electronic, and magnetic properties of Co$_2$FeGa Heusler alloy nanoparticles. The Rietveld refinements of x-ray diffraction (XRD) data with the space group Fm$\bar {3}$m clearly demonstrates that the nanoparticles are of single phase. The particle size (D) decreases with increasing the SiO$_2$ concentration. The Bragg peak positions and the inter-planer spacing extracted from high-resolution transmission electron microscopy image and selected area electron diffraction are in well agreement with data obtained from XRD. The coercivity initially increases fro…
First-principles total energy calculations and experimental measurements were performed to study the surface reconstructions of the magnetostrictive Fe3Ga alloy. The magnetostrictive behavior was evaluated in the bulk by compressing and stretching its lattice parameter. Results demonstrate two thermodynamically stable surfaces, the 1x1 and 3x1 reconstructions. The 1x1 is an ideally FeGa terminated surface whereas the 3x1 is also FeGa terminated but it has a first-layer Fe atom substituted by a Ga atom every three unit-cells, forming stripe-like domain patterns. Tersoff-Hamann scanning tunnelin…
Recently a new group of two dimensional (2D) materials, originating from the group V elements (pnictogens), has gained global attention owing to their outstanding properties.
Using the density-functional-based tight-binding method we performed a systematic comparative study of stability, structural and electronic properties for 12 various types of graphene allotropes, which are likely candidates for engineering of novel graphene-like materials.
The structural stability of thermoelectric materials is a subject of growing importance for their energy harvesting applications. Here, we study the microscopic mechanisms governing the structural stability change of zinc antimony at its working temperature, using molecular dynamics combined with experimental measurements of the electrical and thermal conductivity. Our results show that the temperature-dependence of the thermal and electrical transport coefficients is strongly correlated with a structural transition. This is found to be associated with a relaxation process, in which a group of…
An organic-inorganic halide perovskite of CH3NH3SnI3 with significantly improved structural stability is obtained via pressure-induced amorphization and recrystallization. In situ high-pressure resistance measurements reveal an increased electrical conductivity by 300% in the pressure-treated perovskite. Photocurrent measurements also reveal a substantial enhancement in visible-light responsiveness. The mechanism underlying the enhanced properties is demonstrated to be associated with the improved structural stability.
We report a correlation between structural phase stability and magnetic properties of Co2FeO4 spinel oxide. We employed mechanical alloying and subsequent annealing to obtain the desired samples. The particle size of the samples changes from 25 nm to 45 nm. The structural phase separation of samples, except sample annealed at 9000C, into Co rich and Fe rich spinel phase has been examined from XRD spectrum, SEM picture, along with EDAX spectrum, and magnetic measurements. The present study indicated the ferrimagnetic character of Co2FeO4, irrespective of structural phase stability. The observat…
Density functional calculations of the electronic structure are used to elucidate the bonding of Li$_3$AlH$_6$. It is found that this material is best described as ionic, and in particular that the [AlH$_6$]$^{3-}$ units are not reasonably viewed as substantially covalent.
The properties of MXenes, a new group of quasi-two-dimensional d-metal carbide or nitride nanomaterials derived by chemical exfoliation from the MAX phases, can be very sensitive to the presence of surface functional groups. Herein, the MXenes Ti2C and Ti3C2 functionalized by methoxy groups are considered by means of the density functional theory tight-binding method. Their structural, electronic properties, and relative stability are discussed in comparison with related and experimentally fabricated hydroxy derivatives of MXenes.
The presence in the graphyne sheets of a variable amount of sp2/sp1 atoms, which can be transformed into sp3-like atoms by covalent binding with one or two fluorine atoms, respectively, allows one to assume the formation of fulorinated graphynes (fluorographynes) with variable F/C stoichiometry. Here, employing DFT band structure calculations, we examine a series of fluorographynes, and the trends in their stability, structural and electronic properties have been discussed as depending on their stoichiometry: from C2F3 (F/C= 1.5) to C4F7 (F/C= 1.75).
We resolve issues that have plagued reliable prediction of relative phase stability for solid-solutions and compounds. Due to its commercially important phase diagram, we showcase Al-Li system because historically density-functional theory (DFT) results show large scatter and limited success in predicting the structural properties and stability of solid-solutions relative to ordered compounds. Using recent advances in an optimal basis-set representation of the topology of electronic charge density (and, hence, atomic size), we present DFT results that agree reasonably well with all known exper…
In order to improve the hydrogen storage properties of calcium hydride (CaH2), we have tuned its thermodynamical properties through fluorination. Using ab-initio total energy calculations based on density functional theory, the structural stability, electronic structure and chemical bonding of CaH2-xFx systems are investigated. The phase transition of fluorinated systems from orthorhombic to cubic structure has been observed at 18% fluorine doped CaH2. The phase stability analysis shows that CaH2-xFx systems are highly stable and the stability is directly correlating with their ionicity. Densi…
We have investigated the structural properties and dynamical stability of C$_3$N$_2$ hosting hydrogen as a guest atom. The calculations were performed using the density functional theory (DFT) as implemented in Quantum espresso code. The generalized gradient approximation approach was used throughout the calculations presented here. We find that the guest atom leaves the lattice constant of the host almost unchanged. We, therefore, noted that C$_3$N$_2$ remains dynamically stable when a single guest atom is inserted into its cage-like structure. We also established that the guest vibrational m…
Off-stoichiometric Ni$_2$MnIn Heusler alloys have drawn recent attention due to their large magnetocaloric entropy change associated with the first-order magneto-structural transition. Here we present crystal structural, calorimetric and magnetic studies of three compositions. Temperature-dependent X-ray diffraction shows clear structural transition from a 6M modulated monoclinic to a L2$_1$ cubic. A significant enhancement of relative cooling power (RCP) was achieved by tuning the magnetic and structural stability through minor compositional changes, with the measured results quantitatively c…
The fcc-based structure of Yb2.75C60 is unique among metal-doped fullerene compounds, exhibiting long-range-ordered vacancies, significantly off-centered divalent Yb cations, and distorted, crystallographically inequivalent, orientationally ordered C60 anions. A simple electrostatic-energy analysis, which models the constituents using point charges, is shown to provide insight into how each of these features stabilizes this unusual crystal structure. The results have general implications for a variety of other intercalated metal fullerides.
This paper reviews and summarizes the recent first-principles theoretical studies of the structural stability, electronic structure, optical and magnetic properties of nonmetal-doped TiO$_2$. The first section presents a comparison study of the structural stability for X-anion and X-cation doped TiO$_2$ (X=B, C, Si, Ge, N, P, As, Sb, S, Se, Te, F, Cl, Br, and I), which reveals that the sites of nonmetal dopants (i.e., at O sites or at Ti sites) in TiO$_2$ are determined by the growth condition of doped TiO$_2$ and the dopants' electronegativities. The next section reviews the electronic struct…
In recent years, organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites have attracted wide attention due to their excellent optoelectronic properties in the application of optoelectronic devices. In the manufacturing process of perovskite solar cells, perovskite films inevitably have residual stress caused by non-stoichiometry components and the external load. However, their effects on the structural stability and photovoltaic performance of perovskite solar cells are still not clear. In this work, we investigated the effects of external strain on the structural stability and optoelectronic properties of tetra…
Accurate ab-initio pseudopotential calculations within density functional theory in the LDA approximation have been performed for structural properties and stability of ZnSe/GaAs(001) defected heterostructures. There is a strong experimental evidence that ZnSe/GaAs heterostructures with minimum stacking fault density are related to the presence of a substantial concentration of Ga vacancies at interface. In order to gain insights into the still unknown microscopic maechanism governing their formation and stability, we compared the relative stability of some simple selected interface configurat…
The electrical conduction properties of G4-DNA are investigated using a hybrid approach, which combines electronic structure calculations, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, and the formulation of an effective tight-binding model Hamiltonian. Charge transport is studied by computing transmission functions along the MD trajectories. Though G4-DNA is structurally more stable than double-stranded DNA (dsDNA), our results strongly suggest that the potential improvement of the electrical transport properties in the former is not necessarily related to an increased stability, but rather to the fac…
Structural phase transformations in (001)-oriented (1-x)Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3O3)-32%PbTiO3 (PMN-x%PT) crystals have been investigated by x-ray diffraction. A C->T->MC sequence was observed in both the field-cooled (FC) and zero-field-cooled (ZFC) conditions. Most interestingly, an anomalous increase in the C->T phase boundary with increasing field has been observed, which is seemingly a common characteristic of crystals whose compositions are in the vicinity of the MPB, irrespective of the width of the T and MC phase regions.
A density functional theory study of the structural and electronic properties and relative stability of fluorinated sp3 silicon nanotubes and their corresponding silicon nanowires built along various crystallographic orientations is presented. The structural stability is found to increase linearly with the fluorine surface coverage and for coverages exceeding 25% the tubular structures are predicted to be more stable than their wire-like counterparts. The bandgaps of the fully fluorinated systems are lower than those of their fully hydrogenated counterparts by up to 0.79 eV for systems having …
An accurate density-functional method is used to study systematically half-metallic ferromagnetism and stability of zincblende phases of 3d-transition-metal chalcogenides. The zincblende CrTe, CrSe, and VTe phases are found to be excellent half-metallic ferromagnets with large half-metallic gaps (up to 0.88 eV). They are mechanically stable and approximately 0.31-0.53 eV per formula unit higher in total energy than the corresponding nickel-arsenide ground-state phases, and therefore would be grown epitaxially in the form of films and layers thick enough for spintronic applications.
We investigate the structural stability and magnetic properties of cubic, tetragonal and hexagonal phases of Mn3Z (Z=Ga, Sn and Ge) Heusler compounds using first-principles density-functional theory. We propose that the cubic phase plays an important role as an intermediate state in the phase transition from the hexagonal to the tetragonal phases. Consequently, Mn3Ga and Mn3Ge behave differently from Mn3Sn, because the relative energies of the cubic and hexagonal phases are different. This result agrees with experimental observations from these three compounds. The weak ferromagnetism of the h…
We recently proposed a new structural model for the Si(331)-(12x1) surface reconstruction containing silicon pentamers as elementary structural building blocks. Using first-principles density-functional theory we here investigate the stability of a variety of adatom configurations and determine the lowest energy configuration. We also present a detailed comparison of the energetics between our model for Si(331)-(12x1) and the adatom-tetramer-interstitial model for Si(110)-(16x2), which shares the same structural building blocks.
Negative thermal expansion (NTE) describes the anomalous propensity of materials to shrink when heated. Since its discovery, the NTE effect has been found in a wide variety of materials with an array of magnetic, electronic and structural properties. In some cases, the NTE originates from phase competition arising from the electronic or magnetic degrees of freedom but we here focus on a particular class of NTE which originates from intrinsic dynamical origins related to the lattice degrees of freedom, a property we term \textit{structural} negative thermal expansion (SNTE). Here we review some…
First-principles DFT levels of calculations have been carried out in order to study the structural stability and electronic properties of hydrogen passivated graphene (H-graphene) clusters. Two different shaped clusters, rectangular and circular, consisting of 6 to 160 carbon atoms and hydrogen termination at the zigzag boundary edges have been studied. The relative stability of rectangular shaped cluster consisting 96 C-atoms found to be 1.5% greater than that of circular shape cluster consisting same number of C-atoms. In comparing circular and rectangular cluster containing same number of C…
We present a density-functional theory (DFT) study of the structural, electronic, and chemical bonding behaviour in germanium (Ge)-doped vanadium dioxide (VO$_2$). Our motivation is to explain the reported increase of the metal-insulator transition temperature under Ge doping and to understand how much of the fundamental physics and chemistry behind it can be captured at the conventional DFT level. We model doping using a supercell approach, with various concentrations and different spatial distributions of Ge atoms in VO$_2$. Our results suggest that the addition of Ge atoms strongly perturbs…
A theoretical study is carried out in the homometallic mixed valent ludwigite Co3O2BO3 using a modified tight binding methodology. The study focuses on the electronic properties of bulk, 1D and molecular units to describe differences between Co3O2BO3 and another homometallic ludwigite, Fe3O2BO3. The latter is known to present a structural instability which has not been found in Co3O2BO3. Our results show that bulk band structures present no significant differences. Differences are found in the calculation of 1D stripes formed by 3+ 2+ 3+ triads, owed to different 3d occupancy of Fe and Co cati…
The incompatibility between defect-tolerance and structural stability is a severe issue hindering the wide application of high-efficiency solar cells. Usually, covalent/polar semiconductors with prototype of Si/CdTe crystals exhibit great structural stability owing to their compactly composed tetrahedral building blocks, but present extremely poor defect-tolerance due to the similar electronegativity of component elements. On the contrary, ionic semiconductors, such as perovskite series, always exhibit benign electronic properties of intrinsic defects owing to the great disparity of electroneg…
Using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we explore the structural stability and mechanical integrity of phosphorene nanotubes (PNTs), where the intrinsic strain in the tubular PNT structure plays an important role. It is proposed that the atomic structure of larger-diameter armchair PNTs (armPNTs) can remain stable at higher temperature, but the high intrinsic strain in the hoop direction renders zigzag PNTs (zigPNTs) less favorable. The mechanical properties of PNTs, including the Young's modulus and fracture strength, are sensitive to the diameter, showing a size dependence. A simple mode…
We study the structural stability and dynamical properties of Ar(H2)2 under pressure using first-principles and ab initio molecular dynamics techniques. At low temperatures, Ar(H2)2 is found to stabilize in the cubic C15 Laves structure (MgCu2) and not in the hexagonal C14 Laves structure (MgZn2) as it has been assumed previously. Based on enthalpy energy and phonon calculations, we propose a temperature-induced MgCu2 -> MgZn2 phase transition that may rationalize the existing discrepancies between the sets of Raman and infrared vibron measurements. Our AIMD simulations suggest that the meltin…
The existence of two novel hybrid two-dimensional (2D) monolayers, 2D B3C2P3 and 2D B2C4P2, has been predicted based on the density functional theory calculations. It has been shown that these materials possess structural and thermodynamic stability. 2D B3C2P3 is a moderate band gap semiconductor, while 2D B2C4P2 is a zero band gap semiconductor. It has also been shown that 2D B3C2P3 has a highly tunable band gap under the effect of strain and substrate engineering. Moreover, 2D B3C2P3 produces low barriers for dissociation of water and hydrogen molecules on its surface, and shows fast recover…
In Lithium ion batteries (LIBs), proper design of cathode materials influences its intercalation behavior, overall cost, structural stability, and its impact on environment. At present, the most common type of cathode materials, NCA , has very high cobalt concentration. Since cobalt is toxic and expensive, the existing design of cathode materials is not cost-effective, and environmentally benign. However, these immensely important issues have not yet been properly addressed. Therefore, we have performed density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate three types of NCA cathode mate…
The nature of the bonding in Li$_3$AlH$_6$ has been re-examined with additional analyses using density-functional calculations. From partial density of states, charge density distribution, charge transfer, electron localization function, crystal orbital Hamilton population and Mulliken population analyses it is concluded that the interaction between Li and AlH$_6$ in Li$_3$AlH$_6$ is ionic as earlier advocated. Based on charge density distribution, electron localization function, and density of states analyses we earlier suggested that the interaction between Al and H is largely of the covalen…
Antiperovskite materials are well known for their high thermoelectric performance and gained huge research interest. Here, we report the structural stability and transport properties of Sr$_3$AsN from a precise first-principles study. The calculated equilibrium lattice parameters are in a good agreement with the available data. We find that Sr$_3$AsN is a mechanically, energetically and dynamically stable at ambient condition. Our calculated electronic structure indicates that it is a direct bandgap semiconductor, with a value ~1.2 eV. Sr-4d and N-2p orbitals mainly formulate the direct bandga…
Thermoelectric materials based on earth-abundant and non-toxic elements are very useful in cost-effective and eco-friendly waste heat management systems. The constituents of SrGaSnH are earth-abundant and non-toxic, thus we have chosen SrSnGaH to study its structural stability and thermoelectric properties by using DFT, DFPT, and semi-classical Boltzmann transport theory. Our elastic and phonons calculations show that the compound has good structural stability. The electronic structure calculation discloses that it is an indirect bandgap (0.63 eV by mBJ+SOC) semiconductor. Light band hole effe…
First-principles calculations through a FLAPW-GGA method for six possible polymorphs of ruthenium mononitride RuN with various atomic coordination numbers CNs: cubic zinc blende (ZB) and cooperite PtS-like structures with CNs = 4; cubic rock-salt (RS), hexagonal WC-like and NiAs-like structures with CNs = 6 and cubic CsCl-like structure with CN = 8 indicate that the most stable is ZB structure, which is much more preferable for RuN than the recently reported RS structure for synthesized RuN samples. The elastic and electronic properties of ZB-RuN were investigated and discussed in comparison w…
In the framework of density functional theory (DFT), the structural and magnetic properties of FeN mono nitride have been investigated using the all electrons augmented spherical wave method (ASW) with a generalized gradient GGA functional for treating the effects of exchange and correlation. Calculation of the energy versus volume in hypothetic rocksalt (RS), zinc-blende (ZB) and wurtzite (W) types structures shows that the RS-type structure is more stable than the others. Spin polarized calculation results at equilibrium volume indicate that the ground state of RS-FeN is ferromagnetic with a…
3D titanium carbonitrides TiCxNy possess excellent physical, chemical, and mechanical properties, attractive for various industrial applications. Most recently, the uncommon nano-sized layers of 2D-like titanium carbonitrides were fabricated from MAX phases. Herein, the structural, electronic properties and stability of these new compounds as well as their hydroxylated derivatives - so-called MXenes Ti3C2-xNx and Ti3C2-xNx(OH)2 are probed by means of SSC-DFTB calculations. The genesis of the properties is discussed in the sequence: binary MXenes Ti3C2 (Ti3N2) -> their hydroxylated forms Ti3C2(…
Stable oxide topological insulators (TIs) that could bring together the traditional oxide functionalities with the dissipationless surface states of TIs have been sought for years but none was found. Yet, heavier chalcogenides (selenides, tellurides) were readily found to be TIs. We clarify here the basic contradiction between TI-ness and stability which is maximal for oxides, and trace the basic design principles necessary to identify the window of opportunity of stable TIs. We first identify the electronic motif that can achieve topological band inversion ("topological gene") in ABO3 as bein…
Based on first-principles calculations, we have investigated the structural stability, electronic structures, and thermal properties of the monolayer XSi2N4 (X= Ti, Mo, W) and their lateral (LH) and vertical heterostructures (VH). We find that these heterostructures are energetically and dynamically stable due to high cohesive and binding energies, and no negative frequencies in the phonon spectra. The XSi2N4 (X= Ti, Mo, W) monolayers, the TiSi2N4/MoSi2N4-LH, MoSi2N4/WSi2N4-LH, and MoSi2N4/WSi2N4-VH possess a semiconducting nature with an indirect band gap ranging from 0.30 to 2.60 eV. At room…
Li2FeSiO4 is an important alternative cathode for next generation Li-ion batteries due to its high theoretical capacity (330 mA h/g). However, its development has faced significant challenges arising from structural complexity and poor ionic conductivity. In the present work, the relative stability, electronic structure, thermodynamics, and mechanical properties of potential cathode material Li2FeSiO4 and its polymorphs have been studied by state-of-the-art density-functional calculations. Among the 11 structural arrangements considered for the structural optimization calculations, the experim…
Lattice-matched heterovalent alloys and superlattices have some unique physical properties. For example, their band gap can change by a large amount without significant change in their lattice constants, thus they have great potential for optelectronic applications. Using first-principles total energy calculation and Monte Carlo simulation as well as lattice harmonic expansion, we systematically study the stability of the heterovalent superlattices. We show that the chemical trend of stability of lattice-matched heterovalent superlattices is significantly different from lattice-mismatched isov…

We report on the various types of Peierls like two dimensional structural modulations and relative phase stability of 2H and 1T poly-types in MoS2-ReS2 and WS2-ReS2 alloy system. Theoretical calculation predicts a polytype phase transition cross over at ~50 at.% of Mo and W in ReS2 in both monolayer and bulk form, respectively. Experimentally, two different types of structural modulations at 50% and a modulation corresponding to trimerization at 75% alloy composition is observed for MoS2-ReS2 and only one type of modulation is observed at 50% WS2-ReS2 alloy system. The 50% alloy system is foun…
Metal crystals with tetrahedral packing are known as Frank-Kasper phases with large unit cells with the number of atoms from hundreds to thousands. The main factors of the formation and stability of these phases are the atomic size ratio and the number of valence electrons per atom. The significance of the electronic energy contribution is analyzed within the Fermi sphere - Brillouin zone interactions model for several typical examples: Cu4Cd3, Mg2Al3 with over thousand atoms per cell, and for icosahedral quasicrystal approximants with 146 to 168 atoms per cell. Our analysis shows that to mini…
We report a facile `metric' for the identification of structurally and dynamically (positive definite phonon structure) stable inorganic compounds. The metric considers charge-imbalance within the local substructures in crystalline compounds calculated using first-principles density-functional theory. To exemplify, we chose carbon-based nitrides as it provides a large pool of structurally stable and unstable phases. We showcase how local structural information related to Wyckoff symmetry uniquely identifies four new carbon-nitride phases. The metric predicts three new structurally stable phase…
Cathode materials undergo various phase transitions during the charge/discharge process, and the structural transitions significantly affect the battery performance. Although phonon properties can provide a direct clue for structural stability and transitions, it has been less explored in sodium cathode materials. Here, using the first-principles calculations, we investigate phonon and electronic properties of various layered NaMnO$_2$ materials, especially focusing on the dependency of the Jahn-Teller distortion of Mn$^{3+}$. The phonon dispersion curves show that the O$'$3 and P$'$2 structur…
Boron carbide is a ceramic material with unique properties widely used in numerous, including armor, applications. Its mechanical properties, mechanism of compression, and limits of stability are of both scientific and practical value. Here, we report the behavior of the stoichiometric boron carbide B13C2 studied on single crystals up to 68 GPa. As revealed by synchrotron X-ray diffraction, B13C2 maintains its crystal structure and does not undergo phase transitions. Accurate measurements of the unit cell and B12 icosahedra volumes as a function of pressure led to conclusion that they reduce s…
Using a systematic search algorithm we identify several types of point defects in the boron fullerene with 80 atoms. All these point defect leave the cage structure intact. In addition the cage structure is also very stable with respect to elastic deformations and addition or removal of atoms.
The structure-thermodynamic stability relationship in vitreous silica is investigated using machine learning and a library of 24,157 inherent structures generated from melt-quenching and replica exchange molecular dynamics simulations. We find the thermodynamic stability, i.e., enthalpy of the inherent structure ($e_{\mathrm{IS}}$), can be accurately predicted by both linear and nonlinear machine learning models from numeric structural descriptors commonly used to characterize disordered structures. We find short-range features become less indicative of thermodynamic stability below the fragil…
Based on first-principles simulations, the structural stability and magnetic uniformity of Pt13 nanoparticles encapsulated in a NaY zeolite were investigated. Among 50 stable isomers in the gas phase, only 15 could be accommodated into a zeolite pore and severe structural rearrangements occured depending on whether the solid angle at the Pt vertex bound to the supercage was larger than 2 sr (i.e. icosahedron). When van der Waals forces were included, the global minimum was found to be a new L-shaped cubic wire that is unstable in the gas phase. The total magnetization of the encapsulated Pt13 …
A density functional theory study of the structural and electronic properties and relative stability of narrow SP3 silicon nanotubes of different growth orientations is presented. All nanotubes studied and their corresponding wire structures are found to be meta-stable with the wires being more energetically stable. Silicon nanotubes show a dramatic bandgap increase of up to 68% with respect to the corresponding wires. Furthermore, a direct relation between the bandgap of the system and the molar fraction of the passivating hydrogen contents is found. These results suggest that by careful cont…
We have investigated by means of high-pressure x-ray diffraction the structural stability of Pd2Mo3N, Ni2Mo3C0.52N0.48, Co3Mo3C0.62N0.38, and Fe3Mo3C. We have found that they remain stable in their ambient-pressure cubic phase at least up to 48 GPa. All of them have a bulk modulus larger than 330 GPa, being the least compressible material Fe3Mo3C, B0 = 374(3) GPa. In addition, apparently a reduction of compressibility is detected as the carbon content increased. The equation of state for each material is determined. A comparison with other refractory materials indicates that interstitial nitri…
