Using a systematic search algorithm we identify several types of point defects in the boron fullerene with 80 atoms. All these point defect leave the cage structure intact. In addition the cage structure is also very stable with respect to elastic deformations and addition or removal of atoms.
To explain recent experiment showing the role of odd fullerenes in formation of abundant fullerene isomers a reactive molecular dynamics (MD) study has been performed. Three types of bond rearrangement reactions are found by MD simulations at 3000 K in odd fullerenes which contain an extra sp atom among all other sp$^2$ atoms. The first type is sto-chastic sp-defect migration analogous to exchange mechanism of adatom migration on a surface. The second type cor-responds to changes in the ring configuration of the sp$^2$-structure assisted by the sp atom which can lead to annealing of seven-memb…
Magnetism in carbon nanostructures is of high scientific interest, which could lead to novel magnetic materials. The magnetic properties of symmetrical and asymmetrical sized small fullerene dimers have been investigated using spin polarized density functional theory. The interaction energies depict that small fullerene cages form stable dimer structures and symmetrical sized fullerene dimers are found more stable than asymmetrical sized dimers. The dimerization of fullerene cages in different modes leads to change in their magnetic properties. The non-magnetic fullerene cages become magnetic …

Addition Energies of Fullerenes and Nanotubes as Quantum Dots: The Role of Symmetry
[Phys. Rev. Lett. 91,116803(2003).]
Organic solar cells (OSCs) based on ADA-type (acceptor-donor-acceptor) non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) exhibit improved power conversion efficiency (PCE) compared to the conventional fullerene-based analogues. The optoelectronic properties of OSC active layer blends are correlated to their underlying structural dynamics and therefore influence the device performance. Using synergistically different neutron spectroscopy techniques, we studied the dynamics of binary and ternary blends made of the NFAs O-IDTBR and O-IDFBR and the regioregular donor polymer P3HT. Deuteration was considered for a co…

New monolayer 2D carbon structures, namely qHPC60 and qTPC60, were recently synthesized by covalently bonding C60 polymers. Here, we carried out Reactive (ReaxFF) molecular dynamics simulations to study the thermodynamic stability and fracture patterns of qHPC60 and qTPC60. Our results showed that these structures present similar thermal stability, with sublimation points of 3898K and 3965K, respectively. qHPC60 and qTPC60 undergo an abrupt structural transition becoming totally fractured after a critical strain threshold. The crack propagation is linear (non-linear) for qHPC60 (qTPC60). The e…
In this study, based on density functional theory (DFT), we propose a new branch of pseudo-fullerenes which contain triple bonds with sp hybridization. We should call these new nanostructures fullerynes, according to IUPAC. We present four samples with the chemical formula of C4nHn, and structures derived from fullerenes. We compare the structural and electronic properties of these structures with those of two common fullerene and fullerene systems. The calculated electron affinities of the sampled fullerynes are negative, and much smaller than those of fullerenes, so they should be chemically…
The newly synthesized two-dimensional polyaniline (C3N) is structurally similar to graphene, and has interesting electronic, magnetic, optical, and thermal properties. Motivated by the fact that point defects in graphene give rise to interesting features, like magnetization in an all carbon material, we perform density functional theory calculations to investigate vacancy and Stone-Wales type point defects in monolayer C3N. We compare and contrast the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of these defects with those in graphene. While monovacancies and Stone-Wales defects of C3N resul…

Non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) are excellent light harvesters, yet the origin of such high optical extinction is not well understood. In this work, we investigate the absorption strength of NFAs by building a database of time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations of ~500 pi-conjugated molecules. The calculations are first validated by comparison with experimental measurements on liquid and solid state using common fullerene and non-fullerene acceptors. We find that the molar extinction coefficient (ε_(d,max)) shows reasonable agreement between calculation in vacuum and exper…
Mechanical behaviors of bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) including heterogeneous and homogeneous deformation are interpreted by phenomenological shear transformation zones (STZs) model. Currently, information about STZs, i.e. size and density, is only extracted by fitting model equation to the data obtained from macroscopic mechanical tests. This is inadequate since structural features of STZs theory cannot be assessed. Here, we develop anisotropic pair distribution function (PDF) method for directly characterizing mechanical response of deformation defects. Our results reveal the physical picture…
Influences of defects generating random fields on modulated phases in materials with the order-disorder type of phase transition are studied. It is shown that under appropriate conditions third harmonics of the ground state modulation may be suppressed by these defects.
The synthesis conditions of SrTiO$_3$(Co) samples in which cobalt predominantly enters the $A$ or $B$ sites of the perovskite $AB$O$_3$ structure are found. EXAFS studies show that the Co impurity at the $A$ site is off-center and is displaced from the site by 1.0 Å. XANES studies reveal two predominant oxidation states of Co: Co$^{2+}$ at the $A$ site and Co$^{3+}$ at the $B$ site. First-principles calculations of a number of possible cobalt-containing structural defects reveal defects whose properties are compatible with the experimentally observed Co oxidation state, its local structure, ma…
Extended defects in crystals, such as dislocations, stacking faults and grain boundaries, play a crucial role in determining a wide variety of materials properties. Extended defects can also lead to novel electronic properties in two-dimensional materials, as demonstrated by recent discoveries of emergent electronic phenomena in twisted graphene bilayers. This paper describes several approaches to construct crystallographic models of two-dimensional extended defects in crystals for first-principles electronic structure calculations, including (i) crystallographic models to parameterize general…
The incompatibility between defect-tolerance and structural stability is a severe issue hindering the wide application of high-efficiency solar cells. Usually, covalent/polar semiconductors with prototype of Si/CdTe crystals exhibit great structural stability owing to their compactly composed tetrahedral building blocks, but present extremely poor defect-tolerance due to the similar electronegativity of component elements. On the contrary, ionic semiconductors, such as perovskite series, always exhibit benign electronic properties of intrinsic defects owing to the great disparity of electroneg…
The strain glassy phase is produced by doping a small percentage of impurity in a martensitic alloy. Its ground state is conceived to consist of martensitic nano domains spatially separated from each other by a defect phase. The present study, by probing the local structure around the Ni and Ti in martensitic and strain glassy compositions of Ni$_{50+x}$Ti$_{50-x}$, for the first time, identifies the defect phase that is responsible for inhibiting the long range ordering of the elastic strain vector leading to the formation of the strain glassy phase.
Localization due to disorder has been one of the most intriguing theoretical concepts evolved in condensed matter. Here, we expand the theory of localization by considering two types of disorder at the same time, namely the original Anderson's disorder and the structural defect disorder, which has been suggested to be a key component in recently discovered two-dimensional amorphous materials. While increasing the degree of both disorders could induce localization of wavefunction in real space, we find that a small degree of structural defect disorder can significantly enhance the localization.…
We report the density-functional calculations that systematically clarify the stable forms of carbon-related defects and their energy levels in amorphous SiO$_2$ using the melt-quench technique in molecular dynamics. Considering the position dependence of the O chemical potential near and far from the SiC/SiO$_2$ interface, we determine the most abundant forms of carbon-related defects: Far from the interface, the CO$_2$ or CO in the internal space in SiO$_2$ is abundant and they are electronically inactive; near the interface, the carbon clustering is likely and a particular mono-carbon defec…
Defect energy formation, lattice distortions and electronic structure of cubic In2O3 with Sn, Ga and O impurities were theoretically investigated using density functional theory. Different types of point defects, consisting of 1 to 4 atoms of Sn, Ga and O in both substitutional and interstitial (structural vacancy) positions, were examined. It was demonstrated, that formation of substitutional Ga and Sn defects are spontaneous, while formation of interstitial defects requires an activation energy. The donor-like behavior of interstitial Ga defects with splitting of conduction band into two sub…
Geometric optimization and electronic properties of Stone-Wales defective antimonene nanotubes are calculated by the method of first -principle calculations based on density functional theory. Various nanotubes are investigated according to the possible orientations of zigzag/armchair nanostructures when Stone-Wales defects are formed. The band structures, partial density of states and atomic orbitals are calculated to reveal the mechanism of influence of Stone-Wales defects on antimonene nanotubes. When the structure of antimonene changes from monolayer to tube, the indirect gap semiconductor…
Local and long range structure, optical and photoluminescence properties of sol-gel synthesized Ce1-xNixO2 nanostructures have been studied. The crystal structure, lattice strain and crystallite size have been analyzed. A decrease in lattice parameter may be attributed to substitution of Ce with smaller Ni ion. UV-Vis measurement is used for studying the effect of Ni substitution on bandgap and disorder. The bandgap decreases with Ni substitution and disorder increases. The PL spectra show five major peaks attributed to various defect states. The PL emission decreases with Ni substitution owin…
