We recently proposed a new structural model for the Si(331)-(12x1) surface reconstruction containing silicon pentamers as elementary structural building blocks. Using first-principles density-functional theory we here investigate the stability of a variety of adatom configurations and determine the lowest energy configuration. We also present a detailed comparison of the energetics between our model for Si(331)-(12x1) and the adatom-tetramer-interstitial model for Si(110)-(16x2), which shares the same structural building blocks.
Surfaces of rutile-like RuO2, especially the most stable (110) surface, are important for catalysis, sensing and charge storage applications. Structure, chemical composition, and properties of the surface depend on external conditions. Using the evolutionary prediction method USPEX, we found stable reconstructions of the (11) surface. Two stable reconstructions, RuO4-(2x1) and RuO2-(1x1), were found, and the surface phase diagram was determined. The new RuO4-(2x1) reconstruction is stable in a wide range of environmental conditions, its simulated STM image perfectly matches experimental data, …
At a given temperature, clean and adatom covered silicon surfaces usually exhibit well-defined reconstruction patterns. Our finite temperature ab-initio molecular dynamics calculations show that the tellurium covered Si(001) surface is an exception. Soft longitudinal modes of surface phonons due to the strongly anharmonic potential of the bridged tellurium atoms prevent the reconstruction structure from attaining any permanent, two dimensional periodic geometry. This explains why experiments attempting to find a definite model for the reconstruction have reached conflicting conclusions.
This work presents the surface reconstructions and transport properties of the topological insulator PtLuSb grown on Al0.1In0.9Sb/GaAs (001). Two stable surface reconstructions, (1x3) and c(2x2), were observed on PtLuSb (001) surfaces. Antimony-dimerization was determined to be the nature of the (1x3) surface reconstruction as evidenced by chemical binding energy shifts in the antimony 4d core-level for surface bonding components. The two surface reconstructions were studied as a function of Sb4 overpressure and substrate temperature to create a reconstruction phase diagram. From this reconstr…
The relative thermodynamic stability of surface reconstructions including vacancies, adatoms and additional layers on both CaO and MnO$_{2}$ terminations is calculated to predict the surface phase diagram of ($\sqrt{2}\times\sqrt{2}$)$\it{R}$45$^{\circ}$ CaMnO$_{3}$ (001) using $\it{ab}$ $\it{initio}$ thermodynamics. Stoichiometric and nonstoichiometric reconstructions are considered. A set of boundary conditions driven by the binary and ternary sub-phases from CaMnO$_{3}$ defines its bulk stability region, enclosing the stable surface reconstructions that can be in equilibrium with the bulk. …
Surface reconstructions on the polar ZnO(0001) surface are investigated using empirical potential models. Several possible reconstructions based around triangular motifs are investigated. The quenching of the dipole moment in the material dominates the energetics of the surface patterns so that no one particular size of surface triangular island or pit is strongly favoured. We employ Monte Carlo simulations to explore which patterns emerge from a high temperature quench and during deposition of additional ZnO monolayers. The simulations show that a range of triangular islands and pits evolve i…
Surface and ferroelectric properties of PbTiO$_3$ thin films are investigated using an interatomic potential approach with parameters computed from first-principles calculations. We show that a model developed for the bulk describes properly the surface properties of PbTiO$_3$. In particular, the antiferrodistortive surface reconstruction, recently observed from X-ray scattering, is correctly reproduced as a result of the change in the balance of long-range Coulombic and short-range interactions at the surface. The effects of the surface reconstruction on the ferroelectric properties of ultrat…
We report on a novel reconstruction of the alpha-boron (111) surface, discovered using an ab initio evolution structure search, and reveal that it has an unexpected neat structure and much lower surface energy than the recently proposed (111)-I_R,(a) surface. For this reconstruction, every single interstitial boron atom forms bridges with the unique polar-covalent bonds between neighboring B_12 icosahedra, which perfectly meet the electron counting rule and are responsible for the reconstruction-induced metal-semiconductor transition. The peculiar charge transfer between the interstitial atoms…
Surface adsorption of C$_{60}$ affects its chemical and electronic properties. Numerous studies have reported observation of bright and dark fullerenes on metal surfaces that suggest extensive surface reconstruction, however, the underpinning mechanism of the reconstruction remains under debate. Here we report tip-functionalised non-contact atomic force microscope (ncAFM) measurements which unambiguously reveal that C$_{60}$ fullerenes adsorb with three well-defined adsorption heights on the Cu(111) surface, consistent with theoretical reports of top-layer hollow site, single-atom vacancies, a…
We measure the electron conductivity of the surface states and the subsurface space charge layer originating from the Si(111)-4x1-In reconstruction as a function of temperature. The conductivity of the surface states drops sharply around 130 K with decreasing temperature, revealing a metal-insulator phase transition of the surface reconstruction. In contrast, the influence of the phase transition on the conductivity of the space charge layer is limited to temperatures above 60 K. This means that the surface Fermi level remains strongly pinned despite the phase transition, indicating the presen…
We report CO-induced lifting of the hexagonal surface reconstruction on Au (001). Using in-situ surface x-ray scattering, we determined a pressure-temperature phase diagram for the reconstruction and measured the dynamical evolution of the surface structure in real time. Our observations provide evidence that, under certain conditions, even macroscopic Au surfaces, much larger than catalytic Au nanoparticles [M. Haruta, Catal. Today 36, 153 (1997)], can exhibit some of the reactive properties and surface transitions observed in systems known to be catalytically active such as Pt (001).
The microscopic structure of the high-index Si$(331)-(12\times1)$ surface is investigated combining scanning tunneling microscopy with ab initio calculations. We present a structural model of the Si(331) surface, employing a reconstruction element composed of six pentagons integrated to the structure of the adjacent pentamer with an interstitial atom. We demonstrate that appropriately arranged additional pentagons significantly lower the surface energy of the high-index surface. The model predicts the existence of multiple Si(331) buckled configurations with similar energies.
Systematic ab initio structure prediction was applied for the first time to predict low energy surface reconstructions by employing the minima hopping method on the α-boron (111) surface. Novel reconstruction geometries were identified and carefully characterized in terms of structural and electronic properties. Our calculations predict the formation of a planar, mono-layer sheet at the surface, which is responsible for conductive surface states. Furthermore, the isolated boron sheet is shown to be the ground state 2D-structure in vacuum at a hole density of η=1/5 and is therefore a potential …
We present a specially designed evolutionary algorithm for the prediction of surface reconstructions. This new technique allows one to automatically explore all the low-energy configurations with variable surface atoms and variable surface unit cells through the whole chemical potential range. The power of evolutionary search is demonstrated by the efficient identification of diamond 2*1 (100) and 2*1 (111) surfaces with a fixed number of surface atom and a fixed cell size. With further variation of surface unit cells, we study the reconstructions of the polar surface MgO (111). Experiment has…
High-quality and impurity-free magnetite surfaces with (sqrt2xsqrt2)R45o reconstruction have been obtained for the Fe3O4(001) epitaxial films deposited on Fe(001). Based on atomically resolved STM images for both negative and positive sample polarity and Density Functional Theory calculations, a model of the magnetite (001) surface terminated with Fe ions forming dimers on the reconstructed (sqrt2xsqrt2)R45o octahedral iron layer is proposed.
The bonding pattern of a covalent semiconductor is disrupted when a surface is cut while keeping a rigid (truncated bulk) geometry. The covalent bonds are partly reformed (with a sizeable energy gain) when reconstruction is allowed. We show that the ``electron localization function'' (ELF)---applied within a first--principles pseudopotential framework---provides un unprecedented insight into the bonding mechanisms. In the unreconstructed surface one detects a partly metallic character, which disappears upon reconstruction. In the surface reformed bonds, the ELF sharply visualizes strongly pair…
Using a CO$_2$ laser to directly heat the crystals from the back side, SrTiO$_3$ substrates may be thermally prepared in situ for epitaxy without the need for ex-situ etching and annealing. We find that the formation of large terraces with straight steps at 900-1100 °C is independent from the formation of the ideal surface reconstruction for epitaxy, which requires temperatures in excess of 1200 °C to complete. The process may be universal, at least for perovskite oxide surfaces, as it also works, at different temperatures, for LaAlO$_3$ and NdGaO$_3$, two other widely used oxide substrate mat…
As progress is made on thin-film synthesis of Heusler compounds, a more complete understanding of the surface will be required to control their properties, especially as functional heterostructures are explored. Here, the surface reconstructions of semiconducting half-Heusler NiTiSn(001), and Ni1+xTiSn(001) (x=0.0-1.0) are explored as a way to optimize growth conditions during molecular beam epitaxy. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were carried out to guide the interpretation of the experimental results. For NiTiSn(001) a c(2x2) surface reconstruction was observed for Sn rich samp…
Understanding the structure of ZnO surface reconstructions and their resultant properties is crucial to the rational design of ZnO-containing devices ranging from optoelectronics to catalysts. Here, we are motivated by recent experimental work which showed a new surface reconstruction containing Zn vacancies ordered in a Zn(3x3) pattern in the subsurface of (0001)-O terminated ZnO. A reconstruction with Zn vacancies on (0001)-O is surprising and counterintuitive because Zn vacancies enhance the surface dipole rather than reduce it. In this work, we show using Density Functional Theory (DFT) th…
Strain can affect the morphology of a crystal surface, and cause modifications of its reconstruction even when weak, as in the case of mechanical bending. We carried out calculations of strain-dependent surface free energy and direct bending simulations demonstrating the change of incommensurate reconstruction in Au(111) under strain, in good agreement with recent data. Time-dependent strain should cause a sliding of the topmost layer over the second, suggesting an interesting case of nanofriction. Bending strain could also be used to fine tune the spacing of selectively absorbed nanoclusters.
Nickel and Rhodium (001) surfaces display a similar - as from STM images - clock reconstruction when half a monolayer of C/Ni, N/Ni or O/Rh is adsorbed; no reconstruction is observed instead for O/Ni. Adsorbate atoms sit at the center of the black squares of a chess-board, $c(2\times 2)$, pattern and two different reconstructions are actually compatible with the observed STM images - showing a $(2\times 2)p4g$ pattern - according to whether a rotation of the black or white squares occurs. We report on a first - principles study of the structure of X/Ni(001) and X/Rh(001) surfaces (X=C,N,O) at …
Controlling the surface structure on the atomic scale is a major difficulty for most transition metal oxides; this is especially true for the ternary perovskites. The influence of surface stoichiometry on the atomic structure of the SrTiO$_3$(001) surface was examined with scanning tunneling microscopy, low-energy electron diffraction, low-energy He$^+$ ion scattering (LEIS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Vapor deposition of 0.8 monolayer (ML) strontium and 0.3 ML titanium, with subsequent annealing to 850 °C in 4 $\times$ 10$^{-6}$ mbar O$_2$, reversibly switches the surface bet…
We perform molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the effect of polar surfaces on the quality (Q)-factors of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowire-based nanoresonators. We find that the Q-factors in ZnO nanoresonators with free polar (0001) surfaces is about one order of magnitude higher than in nanoresonators that have been stabilized with reduced charges on the polar (0001) surfaces. From normal mode analysis, we show that the higher Q-factor is due to a shell-like reconstruction that occurs for the free polar surfaces. This shell-like reconstruction suppresses twisting motion in the nanowires su…
We show that reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) can be used as a highly sensitive tool to track surface and resulting film stoichiometry in adsorption-limited molecular beam epitaxy of (001) SrTiO3 thin films. Even under growth conditions that yield films with a lattice parameter that is identical to that of stoichiometric bulk crystals within the detection limit of high-resolution x-ray diffraction (XRD), changes in surface reconstruction occur from (1x1) to (2x1) to c(4x4) as the equivalent beam pressure of the Ti metalorganic source is increased. These surface reconstructio…
The Mn-terminated (001) surface of the stable anti-ferromagnetic insulating phase of cubic perovskite CaMnO$_3$ is found to undergo a magnetic reconstruction consisting on a spin-flip process at surface: each Mn spin at the surface flips to pair with that of Mn in the subsurface layer. In spite of very little Mn-O charge transfer at surface, the surface behavior is driven by the $e_g$ states due to $d_{xy}$ $\to$ $d_{z^2}$ charge redistribution. These results, based on local spin density theory, give a double exchange like coupling that is driven by $e_g$ character, not additional charge, and …
We discuss a generalization of the surface reconstruction arguments for the structure of intermediate size Si clusters, which leads to model geometries for the sizes 33, 39 (two isomers), 45 (two isomers), 49 (two isomers), 57 and 61 (two isomers). The common feature in all these models is a structure that closely resembles the most stable reconstruction of Si surfaces, surrounding a core of bulk-like tetrahedrally bonded atoms. We investigate the energetics and the electronic structure of these models through first-principles density functional theory calculations. These models may be useful …
We determine the stability and properties of interfaces of low-index Au surfaces adhered to TiO2(110), using density functional theory energy density calculations. We consider Au(100) and Au(111) epitaxies on rutile TiO2(110) surface, as observed in experiments. For each epitaxy, we consider several different interfaces: Au(111)//TiO2(110) and Au(100)//TiO2(110), with and without bridging oxygen, Au(111) on 1x2 added-row TiO2(110) reconstruction, and Au(111) on a proposed 1x2 TiO reconstruction. The density functional theory energy density method computes the energy changes on each of the atom…
We perform molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to investigate the effect of polar surfaces on the thermal transport in zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires. We find that the thermal conductivity in nanowires with free polar (0001) surfaces is much higher than in nanowires that have been stabilized with reduced charges on the polar (0001) surfaces, and also hexagonal nanowires without any transverse polar surfaces. From normal mode analysis, we show that the higher thermal conductivity is due to a shell-like reconstruction that occurs for the free polar surfaces. This shell-like reconstruction suppresses…
The (001) surfaces of cubic SiC were investigated with ab-initio molecular dynamics simulations. We show that C-terminated surfaces can have different c(2x2) and p(2x1) reconstructions, depending on preparation conditions and thermal treatment, and we suggest experimental probes to identify the various reconstructed geometries. Furthermore we show that Si-terminated surfaces exhibit a p(2x1) reconstruction at T=0, whereas above room temperature they oscillate between a dimer row and an ideal geometry below 500 K, and sample several patterns including a c(4x2) above 500 K.
We present the results of ab-initio density functional theory based calculations of the stability and reconstruction of zigzag edges in triangular graphene quantum dots. We show that, while the reconstructed pentagon-heptagon zigzag edge structure is more stable in the absence of hydrogen, ideal zigzag edges are energetically favored by hydrogen passivation. Zero-energy band exists in both structures when passivated by hydrogen, however in case of pentagon-heptagon zigzag, this band is found to have stronger dispersion, leading to the loss of net magnetization.
The reconstructions of the InP(001) surface prepared by molecular beam epitaxy have been studied with in situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The growth chamber contains a highly accurate temperature measurement system and uses a solid-source, cracked phosphorus, valved effusion cell. Five InP(001) reconstructions are observed with RHEED by analyzing patterns in three principal directions. Under a fixed P2 flux, decreasing the substrate temperature gives the following reconstructions: c(2x8), (2x4), (2x1), (2x2), and c(4x4). In situ …
Inspired by experimental observations of Pt(111) surfaces reconstruction at the Pt/graphene (Gr) interfaces with ordered vacancy networks in the outermost Pt layer, the mechanism of the surface reconstruction is investigated by van-der-Waals-corrected density functional theory in combination with particle-swarm optimization algorithm and ab initio atomistic thermodynamics. Our global structural search finds a more stable reconstructed (Rec) structure than that was reported before. With correction for vacancy formation energy, we demonstrate that the experimental observed surface reconstruction…
The observed reactivity of MgO with water is in apparent conflict with theoretical calculations which show that molecular dissociation does not occur on a perfect (001) surface. We have performed ab-initio total energy calculations which show that a chemisorption reaction involving a reconstruction to form a (111) hydroxyl surface is strongly preferred with Delta E = -90.2kJ/mol. We conclude that protonation stabilizes the otherwise unstable (111) surface and that this, not the bare (001), is the most stable surface of MgO under ambient conditions.
Molecular dynamic simulations are used to study the heating of a gold nanorod of 2624 atoms. We show that roughening of surface {110} facets leads to a shape transformation and structural rearrangement of surface and bulk atoms in the rod, in order to reach a more stable configuration. Our results show that the stability of the nanorod is governed by the free energetics of the surface facets.
Using Brownian molecular dynamics simulation, we study the surface dynamics near the reconstruction transition of W(100) via a model Hamiltonian. Results for the softening and broadening of the surface phonon spectrum near the transition are compared with previous calculations and with He atom scattering data. From the critical behavior of the central peak in the dynamical structure factor, we also estimate the exponent of the power law anomaly for adatom diffusion near the transition temperature.
The reconstructions of the Ga polarity GaN(0 0 0 1) surface with and without trace amounts of arsenic and prepared by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) have been studied with in situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Various reconstructions are observed with RHEED by analyzing patterns while the substrate is exposed to a fixed NH3 flux or after depositing known amounts of Ga as a function of substrate temperature. In situ STM images reveal that only a few of these reconstructions yield long-range periodicity in real space. The controversial…
LEED experiments show that Li adsorbed at Cu(100) surfaces at room temperature induces a (2x1) missing row substrate reconstruction while adsorption at lower temperatures, T=180 K, results in an unreconstructed Cu(100)+c(2x2)--Li overlayer structure. Substrate reconstruction has not been observed for Na nor for K adsorption. In order to study the specific reconstruction behavior of the Li adsorbate ab initio DFT calculations have been performed on Cu(100)+Ad, Ad = Li, Na, K systems at coverages Theta_Ad=0.25-0.5 with and without reconstruction. The calculations show that the (2x1) MR reconstru…
