We report CO-induced lifting of the hexagonal surface reconstruction on Au (001). Using in-situ surface x-ray scattering, we determined a pressure-temperature phase diagram for the reconstruction and measured the dynamical evolution of the surface structure in real time. Our observations provide evidence that, under certain conditions, even macroscopic Au surfaces, much larger than catalytic Au nanoparticles [M. Haruta, Catal. Today 36, 153 (1997)], can exhibit some of the reactive properties and surface transitions observed in systems known to be catalytically active such as Pt (001).
The adsorption of CO on unreconstructed and reconstructed Ir{100} has been studied, using a combination of density functional theory and thermodynamics, to determine the relative stability of the two phases as a function of CO coverage, temperature and pressure. We obtain good agreement with experimentaldata. At zero temperature, the (1X5) reconstruction becomes less stable than the unreconstructed (1X1) surface when the CO coverage exceeds a critical value of 0.09 ML. The interaction between CO molecules is found to be repulsive on the reconstructed surface, but attractive on the unreconstruc…
The relativistic Landau levels in the layered organic material alpha-(BEDT-TTF)_2I_3 [BEDT-TTF=bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene] are sensitive to the tilt of the Dirac cones, which, as in the case of graphene, determine the low-energy electronic properties under appropriate pressure. We show that an applied inplane electric field, which happens to be in competition with the tilt of the cones, lifts the twofold valley degeneracy due to a different level spacing. The scenario may be tested in infrared transmission spectroscopy.
First principles calculations of the geometric and electronic structures have been performed for two coverages (0.25 ML and 0.5 ML) of C on Ni(001) to understand the mechanism of the Ni(001) reconstruction induced by carbon adsorption. The calculated structural behavior of the system is in a good agreement with experimental observations. The calculated path and energetics of the $c(2\times 2)$ -- $p4g$ reconstruction in C$_{0.5}$/Ni(001) is provided. A dramatic reduction of the local electronic charge on adsorbed carbon is found to occur upon the reconstruction that decreases the electron-elec…
A detailed structural model for the indium-induced Si(111)-(4x1) surface reconstruction has been determined by analyzing an extensive set of x-ray-diffraction data recorded with monochromatic ($\hbarω$ = 9.1 keV) synchrotron radiation. The reconstruction is quasi-one-dimensional. The main features in the structure are chains of silicon atoms alternating with zigzag chains of indium atoms on top of an essentially unperturbed silicon lattice. The indium coverage corresponds to one monolayer. The structural model consistently explains all previously published experimental data.
Kinetics of molecular oxygen / Au (001) surface interaction has been studied at high temperature and near atmospheric pressures of O2 gas with in situ x-ray scattering measurements. We find that the hexagonal reconstruction (hex) of Au (001) surface lifts to (1x1) in the presence of O2 gas, indicating that the (1x1) is more favored when some oxygen atoms present on the surface. The measured lifting rate constant vs. temperature is found to be highest at intermediate temperature exhibiting a 'volcano'-type behavior. At low temperature, the hex-to-(1x1) activation barrier (Eact = 1.3(3) eV) limi…
Atomically engineered oxide multilayers and superlattices display unique properties responsive to the electronic and atomic structures of the interfaces. We have followed the growth of ferroelectric BaTiO3 on SrRuO3 electrode with in situ atomic scale analysis of the surface structure at each stage. An oxygen-induced surface reconstruction of SrRuO3 leads to formation of SrO rows spaced at twice the bulk periodicity. This reconstruction modifies the structure of the first BaTiO3 layers grown subsequently, including intermixing observed with cross-section spectroscopy. These observations reveal…
We report the experimental realization of Dirac semimetal state in NdSb, a material with antiferromagnetic ground state. The occurrence of topological semimetal state has been well supported by our band structure calculations and the experimental observation of chiral anomaly induced negative magnetoresistance. A field-induced Fermi surface reconstruction is observed, in response to the change of spin polarization. The observation of topological semimetal state in a magnetic material provides an opportunity to investigate the magneto-topological phenomena.
We discuss a generalization of the surface reconstruction arguments for the structure of intermediate size Si clusters, which leads to model geometries for the sizes 33, 39 (two isomers), 45 (two isomers), 49 (two isomers), 57 and 61 (two isomers). The common feature in all these models is a structure that closely resembles the most stable reconstruction of Si surfaces, surrounding a core of bulk-like tetrahedrally bonded atoms. We investigate the energetics and the electronic structure of these models through first-principles density functional theory calculations. These models may be useful …
The control of magnetization via the application of an electric field, known as magnetoelectric coupling, is among the most fascinating and active research areas today. In addition to fundamental scientific interest, magnetoelectric effects may lead to new device concepts for data storage and processing. There are several known mechanisms for magnetoelectric coupling that include intrinsic effects in single-phase materials, strain induced coupling in two-phase composites, and electronically-driven effects at interfaces. Here we explore a different type of magnetoelectric effect at a ferromagne…
We report a de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillation study on IrTe2 single crystals showing complex dimer formations. By comparing the angle dependence of dHvA oscillations with band structure calculations, we show distinct Fermi surface reconstruction induced by a 1/5-type and a 1/8-type dimerizations. This verifies that an intriguing quasi-two-dimensional conducting plane across the layers is induced by dimerization in both cases. A phase transition to the 1/8 phase with higher dimer density reveals that local instabilities associated with intra- and interdimer couplings are the main driving fo…
We present a study of the rubidium adsorption on the Si(111)-(7x7) surface and the related Rb-induced reconstructions as a function of deposition temperature and Rb-coverage via scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and low-energy electron diffraction (LEED). Sample analysis via LEED allowed to observe for the first time a Rb/Si(111)-(6x1) reconstruction. The STM image analysis allowed to obtain the first real space characterization of the Rb/Si(111)-(3x1) surface. In addition, STM provided a direct and local information on the surface arrangement as well as further insights on the interaction b…
Superconductivity has recently been observed in Sr-doped NdNiO2 films grown on SrTiO3. Whether it is caused by or related to the interface remains an open question. To address this issue, we use density functional theory calculation and charge transfer self-consistent model to study the effects of polar discontinuity on the electronic and atomic reconstruction at the NdNiO2/SrTiO3 interface. We find that sharp interface with pure electronic reconstruction only is energetically unfavorable, and atomic reconstruction is unavoidable. We further propose a possible interface configuration that cont…
An atomic-scale study utilizing scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) is performed on large single crystalline graphene grains synthesized on Cu foil by a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. After thermal annealing, we observe the presence of periodic surface depressions (stripe patterns) that exhibit long-range order formed in the area of Cu covered by graphene. We suggest that the observed stripe pattern is a Cu surface reconstruction formed by partial dislocations (which appeared to be stair-rod-like) resulting from the strain induced by the graphene overlayer. I…
Using local density approximation (LDA) calculations we predict GdFeO$_3$-like rotation of TiO$_6$ octahedra at the $n$-type interface between LaAlO$_3$ and SrTiO$_3$. The narrowing of the Ti $d$ bandwidth which results means that for very modest values of $U$, LDA$+U$ calculations predict charge and spin ordering at the interface. Recent experimental evidence for magnetic interface ordering may be understood in terms of the close proximity of an antiferromagnetic insulating ground state to a ferromagnetic metallic excited state.
Inspired by experimental observations of Pt(111) surfaces reconstruction at the Pt/graphene (Gr) interfaces with ordered vacancy networks in the outermost Pt layer, the mechanism of the surface reconstruction is investigated by van-der-Waals-corrected density functional theory in combination with particle-swarm optimization algorithm and ab initio atomistic thermodynamics. Our global structural search finds a more stable reconstructed (Rec) structure than that was reported before. With correction for vacancy formation energy, we demonstrate that the experimental observed surface reconstruction…
LEED experiments show that Li adsorbed at Cu(100) surfaces at room temperature induces a (2x1) missing row substrate reconstruction while adsorption at lower temperatures, T=180 K, results in an unreconstructed Cu(100)+c(2x2)--Li overlayer structure. Substrate reconstruction has not been observed for Na nor for K adsorption. In order to study the specific reconstruction behavior of the Li adsorbate ab initio DFT calculations have been performed on Cu(100)+Ad, Ad = Li, Na, K systems at coverages Theta_Ad=0.25-0.5 with and without reconstruction. The calculations show that the (2x1) MR reconstru…

Pt deposited on a Ge(001) surface spontaneously forms nanowire arrays. These nanowires are thermodynamically stable and can be hundreds of atoms long. The nanowires only occur on a reconstructed Pt-Ge-surface where they fill the troughs between the dimer rows on the surface. This unique connection between the nanowires and the underlying substrate make a thorough understanding of the latter necessary for understanding the growth of the nanowires. In this paper we study possible surface reconstructions containing 0.25 and 0.5 of a monolayer of Pt. Comparison of calculated STM images to experime…
The physics of the electronic excitation in semiconductors induced by sub-GeV dark matter (DM) have been extensively discussed in literature, under the framework of the standard plane wave (PW) and pseudopotential calculation scheme. In this paper, we investigate the implication of the all-electron (AE) reconstruction on estimation of the DM-induced electronic transition event rates. As a benchmark study, we first calculate the wavefunctions in silicon and germanium bulk crystals based on both the AE and pseudo (PS) schemes within the projector augmented wave (PAW) framework, and then make com…
